AN ANALYSIS OF CODE-SWITCHING USED BY ALUMNI OF THE INTERNATIONAL INDONESIAN SCHOOL OF JEDDAH (IISJ)

This study represents the types and reasons for code-switching used by Alumni of IISJ. It was conducted using descriptive research. IISJ’s Alumni use all types of code-switching; tag-switching (6), intersentential-switch (25), and intrasentential-switch (19). Additionally, 7 reasons for code-switching occured; filling the linguistic needs (17), continuing the last language used (7), specifying addressee (4), qualifying message (9 data), specifying speaker involvement (5), marking and emphasizing group identity (5), conveying confidentiality, anger, and annoyance (3).

Code Switching Found in “Maudy Ayunda Music” YouTube Channel

The use of two languages within a conversation has been known as code switching. This study analyzed the code switching phenomenon as found in Maudy Ayunda Music YouTube Channel. The goals are to analyze the types and functions of code switching. Poplack’s model (1980) is applied to identify the types of code switching; meanwhile, for the code switching function, it applied Appel & Muysken’s (1987) theory. The method of descriptive qualitative is used to identify the data. In collecting the data this study applied the observation method and note-taking techniques. Three chosen videos on Maudy Ayunda Music YouTube channel are used as the data source. Furthermore, the result of the study is presented in formal and informal method. All types of code switching were found; there were inter-sentential switching, tag switching and intra-sentential switching. And then, all functions of code switching also found; there were metalinguistic function, phatic function, directive function, poetic function, expressive function and referential function. Code Switching Found in Cinta Laura on Program Trans TV Youtube Channel

This study aimed (1) to find out the types of code switching found in Cinta Laura’s utterances on Deddy's corner program in Trans TV and (2) to analyse the reason of code switching found in Cinta Laura’s utterances on Deddy's corner program in Trans TV. The data were utterances spoken by Cinta Laura in four videos taken from Trans TV Youtube Channel. This study used qualitative method in analysing the data. The data were collected by observation method through watching, listening and transcribing the utterances. There were two basic theories used in this study. The first theory is taken from Poplack (1980) about types of code switching and the second theory is taken from Hoffman (1991) about reasons of code switching. The result of the study shows 23 utterances of code switching. Those are intra-Sentential switching with ten 10 utterances with percentage 43,5%, 9 data of extra-sentential switching or tag switching with percentage 39,13%, 4 data of inter-sentential switching with percentage 17,39%. The most dominant reason is interjection (inserting sentence filler and sentence connector), the second reason of being emphatic about something, the third is talking about particular topic, the lowest occurrence of the reason was repetition used for clarification and intention of clarifying speech content.

Reasons and The Types of Code Switching in The Novel “Biru Pada Januari”

The purpose of this study to analyse the types and the reasons of Code Switching in the novel Biru Pada Januari. In order to identify the utterances collected from the novel “Biru Pada Januari”, this study used the theory developed by Apel and Muysken (1987:117) that distinguishes into three types of code switching, namely tag switching, inter-sentential switching, and intra-sentential switching and also the theory proposed by Hoffman (1991) about sevent reasons of Code Switching, namely talking about particular topic, expressing feeling about something, expressing group identity, interjection, repetition used for clarification, quoting somebody else, and intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor. And from three types of code switching inter-sentential is the dominant in the novel Biru Pada Januari and the least dominant is tag switching. Whereas from the sevent reasons the dominant types is expressing felling about something and the least is expressing group identity and intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor.

Analysis of Code Switching and Code Mixing on the “Bajra” Film at the Darus Salam Modern Islamic Boarding School Gontor Ponorogo

Darus Salam Gontor Islamic boarding school students have designed a film entitled Bajra due to the student’s creativity. In the movie, the phenomenon of code-switching and code-mixing in communication between students in the boarding school environment is found. This study aims to discover the types of code-switching and code-mixing in the Bajra film and the causes of their occurrence in the movie. This type of research is qualitative descriptive. At the same time, the data collection method uses listening/listening techniques in the Bajra film and notes essential points about the types of code-switching and code-mixing as well as the causes of what happened in the movie. The results showed that there were 3 types of code-switching in Bajra film: Metaphorical code-switching, Conversational code-switching, and situational code-switching. Meanwhile, code-mixing occurs in words, phrases, and clauses. The causes of code-switching and code-mixing are of two types, namely internal and external causes.

Code Switching in Di Balik Pintu Vlog By Boy William

This research aims to identify the different kinds of code switching, the factors that cause code switching, and the function of code switching as it was employed in Boy William's Di Balik Pintu vlog. The researchers used descriptive qualititave research. The findings of this study demonstrated the use of tag switching, intersentential switching, and intrasentential switching as the three types of code switching in Di Balik Pintu vlog by Boy William. The researchers found 129 data, 24 intersentential switching data, 74 intrasentential switching data, and 31 tag switching data. The results of the factors that cause code switching were 75 data, there are 34 data of speakers, 28 data of interlocutors, 7 data of situation change from formal to informal, 5 data of change discussion topic, 1 data of attendance of the third person. While for the function of code switching, there were 129 data. The researchers found 19 quotation, 12 addressee specification, 25 interjections, 14 reiterations, 22 message qualification, and 37 personalization or objectification. This research can be used to increase knowledge about code switching and as reference for the next researcher.

Code-switching for non-native Korean lecturers in teaching Korean as a foreign language for basic and additional level

Although communication is a means of exchanging ideas between people, it can be challenging due to the abundance of synonyms and the evolution of language. The idea is that rather than code-switching, each person needs to have the aptitude and competence to comprehend different kinds of language. This study focuses on the use of code-switching by lecturers in the learning process. The purpose of this study was to find out what types of code-switching were used by lecturers during the learning process, what was the function of using code-switching, and how students perceived the use of code-switching by lecturers in learning activities. This research is based on the awareness that the ability of students to capture learning in the classroom varies. This research is expected to help Korean language learning effectively. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative, with one lecturer and 71 students as respondents. Data in the form of a transcription of the lecturer’s speeches were obtained from four learning video documentation and questionnaires. Three types of code-switching were found in the lecturer's speech at each meeting, namely the tag-switching type, the intra-sentential-switching, and the intersentential-switching. Then there were five functions realized at each meeting, namely referential functions, emotive functions, conative functions, fatigue functions, and metalinguistic functions. Students’ responses to the lecturer’s code-switching, as evidenced in the questionnaires, were generally positive, especially in terms of understanding the materials.

ENVISAGING CODE-MIXING AND CODE-SWITCHING IN ENGLISH CONVERSATION AMONG THAI STUDENTS: BREACHING THE MOTIVES FROM SOCIOLINGUISTIC PERSPECTIVES

People always communicate to make relationships with others. Some way they do this is to make the other understand what the speaker means. Therefore, the speaker uses code-mixing and code-switching to make the listener understand. The purpose of code-mixing and code-switching is to make the utterance more communicative, and more friendly to show the master can speak more than two languages. In this research, the subject is students from the English Department at Tidar University in Indonesia and the International Business China Program Faculty of International Studies at Prince of Songkla University in Thailand. This research used a descriptive qualitative method in which the researchers describe the form, the types, and the reason for code-mixing and code-switching in an educational conversation by students from the English Department Tidar University in Indonesia and International Business China Program Faculty of International Studies Prince of Songkla University in Thailand. All of the students in daily life use code-mixing and code-switching to communicate with others or their lecturers because they are from the English Department and International Program where all of the lectures are taught in English. The types of code mixing such as insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization based on Singh and Sachan (2017), while types of code-switching are intra-sentential, inter-sentential, and tag switching based on Ansar (2017). The researchers also found some factors related to Hudson (1980) such as social factors, cultural factors, and individual factors. In a nutshell, as stated from the data analysis, numerous code-mixing and code-switching used by these students in their daily life, it helps them to understand and simplify communication.

CODE SWITCHING FOUND IN RESEARCHERS’ WHATSAPP GROUP “SITADEWIKU”: HOW DOES CODE SWITCHING OCCUR?

This study focuses on the analysis of code-switching of Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar’s Synergy of Bird Conservation with Customary Village Community to Promote Demulih Bangli as a Green and Harmonious Virtual Educational Tourism or in Indonesian is Sinergi Konservasi Burung Bersama Desa Adat dalam Mempromosikan Bukit Demulih Bangli sebagai Kawasan Wisata Edukasi Virtual yang Hijau dan Berkicau (henceforth SITADEWIKU) researchers. This study aimed at identifying the types and the function of code-switching on the Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar’s researchers WhatsApp group. It was found that 15 text messages show code-switching. The descriptive qualitative method was applied in this research. The types of code switching were analyzed using Romaine's ( 1995))theory, and the function of code-switching was analyzed using the theory of there were three types of code-switching found by the researchers: tag-switching, inter-sentential, and the last one is intra-sentential. The results showed that from 15 data texts the majority of the data used by the members of the research was intra-sentential switching. In terms of function, based on the theory used there were six functions of code-switching from the data above, namely referential function, directive function, expressive function, phatic function, metalinguistic function, and poetic function. The expressive function is the most commonly used function of code-switching found.

Exploring Codeswitching Occurrences in an Online English Language Learning in a State College, Philippines

This study aimed to explore the code-switching in online English Language Learning (ELL) in Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges. The researchers formulated two main questions in this study: (1) What types of code-switching are used by students in Online English Language Learning (ELL)? (2) What are the effects of code-switching on language learning in an Online ELL setting? To answer the research questions, the researchers utilized a qualitative research design. The researchers observed and recorded the Zoom classes in the five sections of the Bachelor of Arts in English Language Studies of the said College for the data collection. Research ethics was properly observed in the process of data gathering. Additionally, the researchers interviewed students from each class to triangulate the study results. Moreover, the researchers used content and thematic analyses to analyze the collected data from the transcribed audio and interviews. Furthermore, the findings showed that among the three types of code-switching that Poplack (1980) has categorized. The most prevalent type of switching that English Language Studies students mostly use is tag switching; Second, intra-sentential code-switching; Then, the inter-sentential code-switching. The results also explained the various perceptions of English Language students about the employment of code-switching in their classes. The paper also presents code-switching's positive and negative effects on students' language learning.

Code-Switching on Tansi Language Spoken by People in Lembah Segar Sub-District

People usually choose different codes in different situation in every interaction. The phenomenon of code-switching is common in bilingualism and occurs in conversation. Code-switching occurs when conversation use two languages together to the extent that they change from one language to other in the course of a single utterance. By using qualitative method, this study was aimed to analyze the types and function of code-switching found in the utterance spoken by people in Lembah Segar sub-district. The researcher analyzed sixty three utterance of Minangkabaunese-Tansi language switched spoken by people in Lembah Segar sub-district. Romaine’s (1995) theory is applied in this research to find the types of code-switching. To finding the functions of code-switching the researcher used Gumperz’s (1982) theory. The result of this study shows that the intra-sentential switching was the most common type of code-switching. Also, Interjection was the most function of code-switching used by people in Lembah Segar sub-district. This research gives a contribution in sociolinguistics fields. It is because the result of this study shows the relation of language and society.

CODE-MIXING ANALYSIS IN THE NOVEL A VERY YUPPY WEDDING

This is sociolinguistic research that analyzes code-switching occurrences in the Indonesian novel entitled A Very Yuppy Wedding. The aims of this research are to discover the types of code-switching and the factors that influence code-switching in the studied novel. The researcher in conducting this research used a descriptive qualitative method which is done through library research. The results of this research show that the types of code-switching in the conversation contained in the novel are intasentential switching, inter-sentential switching, and emblematic switching. Meanwhile, the factors that influence code-switching in the novel conversation are participant roles and relationships, situational factors, message intrinsic factors, and language attitudes, dominance, and security. This research found that inter-sentential switching dominates the types of code-switching in the novel. The characters often switch their language mostly because of language attitude, dominance, and security. It means that code-switching is viewed positively so that people tend to code-switch in their daily communication, and the switching is smooth.

Code Switching In English Teaching Learning Process At Year Tenth Of State Islamic Senior High School 3 Jember

This study aims to explain the way of native teacher and non-native teachers do code switch during classroom interaction, to describe the types of code-switching, to explain the factors that cause the occurrence of code-switching, and to explain the functions of code-switching in English teaching learning process used by native teacher and non-native teacher. This study uses descriptive qualitative since this study is to analyze and find the social phenomena which are running naturally based on Hoffman theory to describe code-switching in English teaching learning process. There are three types of code-switching: inter-sentential, intra-sentential, and emblematic-switching. The result shows that all of the three types found in this study used by native teacher and non-native teacher. Furthermore, the most type used by native teacher and non-native teacher is intra-sentential code-switching. Besides, the most dominant factors that cause the occurrence of code-switching is talking about particular topic since to help the learners understand the meaning of the topic. Moreover, the most significant functions of code-switching to teachers is affective function since the teacher wanted to build intimate relations with the students and the most dominant function to students is conflict-control since the students used code-switching to avoid misunderstanding of teachers’ explanation.

Code-Switching Between Arabic and English as a Communicative Strategy Among Preschool Bilingual Saudi Children

This study was conducted on four Saudi preschool children enrolled in an international school in Saudi Arabia. It aims at investigating the social motivations for the occurrence of code-switching in the speech of the study sample. In order to investigate the presence of this phenomenon, both qualitative and quantitative research designs were applied. For the purpose of the study, two research tools were used: a parental questionnaire and a storytelling activity session. Furthermore, to identify the different types of code-switching that occurred in the participants’ speech, Poplack’s (1980) classification approach was used. Findings show that Saudi children use only two types of code switching, and inter-sentential code-switching is used more frequently than intra-sentential code-switching. The results also indicated three communicative functions of Arabic/English code-switching among Saudi preschool children, i.e., to decrease the social distance, ask for the equivalent word in another language, and express feelings and thoughts.

The Causes of Code Switching and Code Mixing by Low Level of EFL Learners

The objective of this study is to analysis the proses occurred the code switching and code mixing, to find out the types and the cause seventh grades at SMPN 1 KIBIN. This study was categorized into qualitative research design embracing particularly the content analysis. The data in this thesis were collected through observation, transcript conversation and documentation. In analysing the data the writer used triangulation data that consist of data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing/verification. The conclusion for this thesis is that in the conversation in seventh grades at SMPN 1 KIBIN occurred code switching and code mixing with the result of this thesis showed that each have three types of code switching and code mixing used in seventh grade at SMPN 1 KIBIN. (1) The calculation of the percentage code switching, the highest percentage results above are intra sentential switching (52%) because in this type of students are able to say words in English. The ssecond percentage is inter sentential switching (36%) not much different from the previous type, but in this type there are no explanatory sentences after or before. And the last smallest percentage is tag switching (12%) only one student does this type. (2) The calculation of the code mixing percentage, the highest percentage results above are alternation approaches (50.98%), students are able to speak explanatory sentences. The second in this percentage are insertions (word phrases) ( 33.33%) because in this type of students are able to say words in English. And the last, the smallest percentage is congruent lexicalization (dialect) (15.68%) only two students who do this type.

Code Switching Used by Agnes Monica on Deddy Corbuzier’s Podcast

Code-switching is important and widely used, someone feels they have to change the language used in order to communicate well and smoothly between each other. The research was conducted with the aim to analyses the types of Code-Switching used in Video Podcasts on the Deddy Corbuzier Channel with Agnes Monica. The data analysis technique used is descriptive qualitative with in-depth analysis techniques about the types of Code-Switching. Some methods in collecting data such as, searching the video, watch the video carefully and analyze the code-swtching. After analyzing, the researcher found the 40 data and the researcher got Inter-sentential switching 12(30%), Intra-sentential switching 8(20%), Tag-switching 3(8%) and Intra-word Switching 17 (42%) and the Intra-word Switching is dominant type of code switching used by Agnez Monica on podcast Deddy Corbuzier in YouTube. The data with persentage 36% from 9 data.

CODE-SWITCHING BY CINTA LAURA IN YOU-TUBE CHANNEL NGOBROL SORE SEMAUNYA

Language serves as a tool for expressing one's identity within a community or group in addition to serving as a means of communication. Some members of multilingual speech communities may be bilingual or speak more than two languages. An individual who speaks in two languages fluently is considered to code-switch when communicating with others. This study aims to find the type and function of code switching used by Cinta Laura based on YouTube video Ngobrol Sore Semaunya. This research is qualitative research and the theoretical frameworks applied in the study are Poplack’s (1980) three types of code-switching and Appel and Muysken’s (2006) six functions of code-switching. The result shows that there are three types of code switching found, namely inter-sentential code switching, tag switching, and intra-sentential code switching. In addition, there are several functions of code switching which performed by Cinta Laura, namely referential function, expressive function, phatic, metalinguistic, and the last is poetic function

SYNTACTIC ANALYSIS OF INTRA-SENTENTIAL ARABIC–ENGLISH CODE-SWITCHING WITHIN VERB PHRASE

The current study aims at analyzing the syntax of Arabic-English intra-sentential code-switching within verb phrase boundaries and finding out how this type of code-switching is performed. Particularly, this study investigates the speakers’ maintenance of their Arabic syntactic structure ant word order while inserting English constituents at verb phrase level. In addition, it examines the effect of the originated patterns on Arabic structural rules and examines the validity of equivalence constraint provided by Poplack in Arabic-English intra-sentential code-switching. To this end, a qualitative approach is operated to gather the research data; the qualitative data are collected from Facebook chats and comments between Jordanian university students while they are communicating on Facebook. Then, conversational analysis technique is used to analyze the syntactic aspects of VP patterns of intra-sentential Arabic-English code-switching. Furthermore, clarification of some grammatical differences between Arabic and English is provided along with analysis. The findings showed that there are thirteen patterns performed within VPs despite the grammatical differences between the two languages. These patterns sometimes violate the grammatical rules of English. Meanwhile, the grammatical rules of Arabic are not affected by intra-sentential code-switching performed within VPs. That means Jordanian Arabic–English code-mixing violates the universal constraint of 'equivalence' proposed by Poplack (1980). The study provides a potential theoretical implication for the Arabic Language Academies in the Arab World by encouraging them to cooperate to carefully ponder the implications of this code-mixing, and they should coin Arabic words for all new English terms, especially those related to the technological and scientific innovations.

Code-switching in EFL classrooms: factors influencing teachers to use code-switching and its types used in the classrooms

Among myriad prior studies on code-switching, little has been done on the factors influencing teachers to use code-switching and their classroom practices. The current research was aimed at investigating the motives of EFL teachers applying code-switching and the sorts of code-switching used by the EFL teachers in the classroom. This study used a qualitative case study as a research design by conducting in-depth interviews and observations as a data collection process. The obtained data were analyzed through coding, i.e., finding the similarities of the data and theming. The research participants were two EFL teachers at a private university in Yogyakarta Indonesia who have code-switching experience when teaching. The research found five reasons teachers used code-switching in EFL teaching and learning: discussing specific topics, making teaching and learning more practical, managing the classroom, building social relationship, and encouraging students' active participation. In addition, the observation found three code-switching types used by EFL teachers in their classrooms. The study implies that while code-switching offers some benefits, teachers should use code-switching at a minimum rate to keep students with maximum exposure to the English language.
