On injection-locking of inhomogeneously pumped semiconductor lasers

The injection-locking of an inhomogeneously pumped two-section semiconductor laser enhances continuous wave (CW) operation. The injected signal can be used to change the mode of operation of the laser from pulsation to CW. In the pulsation regime, it causes an increase of the pulsation frequency. In the CW operation regime, the injected signal causes a reduction in the modulation characteristics peak.

Simple theory on the effect of photon-density longitudinal nonuniformity in a two-section semiconductor laser

A simple theory is presented to study the operation state of a two-section semiconductor laser by the consideration of the difference between the two photon densities in the two sections. It is shown that the ratio of the two photon densities in the two sections can be 1.6 or even larger and is a function of the reflectivity of the laser facets. This photon-density ratio affects the photon-density level of bistable or pulsation operation, as well as the width of the bistable-operation range of the laser. However, the threshold condition and the stable-operation criterion of the laser are not affected.

Cross-correlation measurement of the turn-on delay and pulsewidth of a Q-switched two-section semiconductor laser

Cross-correlation techniques were employed for direct optical measurement of output versus electrical bias for a Q-switched two-section semiconductor laser. Since the switching scheme is not limited by external connections to the device, the ultrafast dynamics of the diode laser can be investigated. In particular, a turn-on-delay as small as 70 ps was recorded with picosecond accuracy. The FWHM and peak power of the Q-switched pulse were also measured. Effect of the spatial gain and intensity variations on a two-section Fabry-Perot semiconductor laser: an analytical study

An analytical static model for two-section Fabry-Perot semiconductor lasers is presented. The spatial dependence of both the field and the gain is fully taken into account. The cases of either a loss or a gain segment coupled to a main gain section are both considered. The bistable and linear behaviors above threshold are analytically described. The validity of the model extends to any homogeneously broadened laser. >

Measurements and theory of correlation between terminal electric noise and optical noise in a two-section semiconductor laser

All-optical synchronization and multiplication of the frequency of mode-locked signals

The authors report all-optical synchronized multiplication by rational fractions of the modulation frequency of optical signals in self-pulsing two-section semiconductor laser diodes. The effect is based on the overlap of harmonics of the input signal with harmonics of the self-pulsation. Chirping compensation using a two-section semiconductor laser amplifier

Compensation of light source chirping and optical fiber dispersion using semiconductor laser amplifiers (SLAs) is investigated using a modeling equation that describes the opposite phase characteristics of light sources to SLAs with self phase modulation. A two-section SLA was fabricated in order to achieve an amplifier with both high gain and phase compensation properties. Preliminary experimental results are presented, confirming the theoretically derived phase compensation effect. >

Small-signal modulation of a two-section semiconductor laser amplifier: Pure PM response

A description is given of how a near-traveling-wave two-section semiconductor laser amplifier used as an external modulator can accomplish phase modulation (PM) without any accompanying amplitude modulation (AM). The analysis, performed by numerical small-signal simulation, shows that it is possible to obtain pure PM by adjustment of the ratio of the modulation currents of the two sections. An AM-suppressed PM response of 0.4 pi rad/mA with a 3-dB modulation bandwidth, of 1 GHz can be obtained.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">&gt;</ETX>

Theoretical study of a two-section single-cavity semiconductor laser for use as a wavelength-tunable source

This paper reports on a theoretical investigation of a novel scheme devised for a two-section single-cavity (TSSC) laser. The results of the investigation are used to demonstrate its potential as a frequency-tunable laser source. By the implementation of an appropriate electrical drive scheme the TSSC laser can be shown to exhibit a reduction in frequency chirping under direct modulation. Alternatively, by employing a different drive scheme, the device can be shown to behave as a wavelength-tunable laser. Control of the tuning range by antireflection (AR) coating of laser facets is also predicted.

Generation of single-longitudinal-mode subnanosecond light pulses by high-speed current modulation of monolithic two-section semiconductor lasers

The spectral behaviour of monolithic two-section GaInAsP/InP lasers is studied. Single-longitudinal-mode light pulses of less than 750 ps length are produced by driving the long section of the laser only or by prebiasing the long cavity and modulating the short section with a current pulse of 1 ns halfwidth. The wavelength of the output light can be changed by varying the operation temperature or the prebias level.
