A Single-Shot Technique for Measuring Broadband Two-Photon Absorption Spectra in Solution.

Applications involving two-photon activation, including two-photon fluorescence imaging, photodynamic therapy, and 3D data storage, require precise knowledge of the two-photon absorption (2PA) spectra of target chromophores. Broadband pump-probe spectroscopy using femtosecond laser pulses provides wavelength-dependent 2PA spectra with absolute cross sections, but the measurements are sometimes complicated by cross-phase modulation effects and dispersion of the broadband probe. Here, we introduce a single-shot approach that eliminates artifacts from cross-phase modulation and enables more rapid measurements by avoiding the need to scan the time delay between the pump and the probe pulses. The approach uses counterpropagating beams to automatically integrate over the full interaction between the two pulses as they cross. We demonstrate this single-shot approach for a common 2PA reference, coumarin 153 (C153), in three different solvents using the output from a Yb:KGW laser. This approach provides accurate 2PA cross sections that are more reliable and easier to obtain compared with scanning pump-probe methods using copropagating laser beams. The single-shot method for broadband two-photon absorption (BB-2PA) spectroscopy also has significant advantages compared with single-wavelength measurements, such as z-scan and two-photon fluorescence.

Dispersion of two-photon absorption and nonlinear refraction in β -Ga2O3 from 350 to 515 nm

We report the wavelength dependencies of the two-photon absorption coefficients β as well as the nonlinear refractive index n2 of undoped β-Ga2O3 single crystal in the spectral range 350–515 nm (0.51 < Ephoto/Eg < 0.75). Femtosecond Z-scan measurements show that n2 decreases monotonically toward the shortwave side, while the maximum value of n2 is 5.0 × 10−19 m2/W near half of the bandgap, Eg. Interestingly, a second upward trend in β was observed when the incident photon energy is larger than 0.6Eg, indicating the impact of additional inter-band transitions with higher energy. A higher-energy band-to-band transition around 6.0 eV was determined by both femtosecond nondegenerate two-photon absorption spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. Our results could provide guidance for designing nonlinear β-Ga2O3 photonic devices in the UV-visible spectral range.

Non-Linear Optical Activity of Chiral Bipyrimidine-Based Thin Films.

An original series of bipyrimidine-based chromophores featuring alkoxystyryl donor groups bearing short chiral (S)-2-methylbutyl chains in positions 4, 3,4 and 3,5, connected to electron-accepting 2,2-bipyrimidine rings, has been developed. Their linear and non-linear optical properties were studied using a variety of techniques, including one- and two-photon absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence measurements, as well as Hyper-Rayleigh scattering to determine the first hyperpolarizabilities. Their electronic and geometrical properties were rationalized by TD-DFT calculations. The thermal properties of the compounds were also investigated by a combination of polarized light optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry measurements and small-angle X-ray scattering experiments. The derivatives were found not to have mesomorphic properties, but to exhibit melting temperatures or cold crystallization behavior that enabled the isolation of well-organized thin films. The nonlinear optical properties of amorphous or crystalline thin films were studied by wide-field second harmonic generation and multiphoton fluorescence imaging, confirming that non-centrosymmetric crystal organization enables strong second and third harmonic generation. This new series confirms that our strategy of functionalizing 3D organic octupoles with short chiral chains to generate non-centrosymmetric organized thin films enables the development of highly second order nonlinear optical active materials without the use of corona-poling or tedious deposition techniques.

Conjugation through Si-O-Si bonds, silsesquioxane (SQ) half cage copolymers, extended examples via SiO0.5/SiO1.5 units: multiple emissive states in violation of Kasha's rule.

We previously reported that phenyl- and vinyl-silsesquioxanes (SQs), [RSiO1.5]8,10,12 (R = Ph or vinyl) functionalized with three or more conjugated moieties show red-shifted absorption- and emission features suggesting 3-D conjugation via a cage centered LUMOs. Corner missing [PhSiO1.5]7(OSiMe3)3 and edge opened, end capped [PhSiO1.5]8(OSiMe2)2 (double decker, DD) analogs also offer red shifted spectra again indicating 3-D conjugation and a cage centered LUMO. Copolymerization of DD [PhSiO1.5]8(OSiMevinyl)2 with multiple R-Ar-Br gives copolymers with emission red-shifts that change with degree of polymerization (DP), exhibit charge transfer to F4TNCQ and terpolymer averaged red-shifts suggesting through chain conjugation even with two (O-Si-O) end caps possibly via a cage centered LUMO. Surprisingly, ladder (LL) SQ, (vinylMeSiO2)[PhSiO1.5]4(O2SiMevinyl) copolymers offer emission red-shifts even greater for analogous copolymers requiring a different explanation. Here we assess the photophysical behavior of copolymers of a more extreme SQ form: the half cage [PhSiO1.5]4(OSiMe2Vinyl)4, Vy4HC SQs. We again see small red-shifted absorptions coupled with significant red-shifted emissions, even with just a half cage, thus further supporting the existence of pπ-dπ and/or σ*-π* conjugation through Si-O-Si bonds and contrary to most traditional views of Si-O-Si linked polymers. These same copolymers donate an electron to F4TCNQ generating the radical anion, F4TCNQ-. as further proof of conjugation. Column chromatographic separation of short from longer chain oligomers reveals a direct correlation between DP and emission λmax red-shifts as another indication of conjugation. Further, one- and two-photon absorption and emission spectroscopy reveals multiple excited fluorescence-emitting states in a violation of Kasha's rule wherein emission occurs only from the lowest excited state. Traditional modeling studies again find HOMO LUMO energy levels residing only on the aromatic co-monomers rather than through Si-O-Si bonds as recently found in related polymers.

Broadband Two-Photon Absorption Spectroscopy with Stimulated Raman Scattering as an Internal Standard.

Two-photon absorption (2PA) spectroscopy provides valuable information about the nonlinear properties of molecules. In contrast with single-wavelength methods, broadband 2PA spectroscopy using a pump-probe approach gives a continuous 2PA spectrum across a wide range of transition energies without tuning the excitation laser. This contribution shows how stimulated Raman scattering from the solvent can be used as a convenient and robust internal standard for obtaining accurate absolute 2PA cross sections using the broadband approach. Stimulated Raman scattering has the same pump-probe overlap dependence as 2PA, thus eliminating the need to measure the intensity-dependent overlap of the pump and probe directly. Eliminating the overlap represents an important improvement because intensity profiles are typically the largest source of uncertainty in the measurement of absolute 2PA cross sections using any method. Raman scattering cross sections are a fundamental property of the solvent and therefore provide a universal standard that can be applied any time the 2PA and Raman signals are present within the same probe wavelength range. We demonstrate this approach using sample solutions of coumarin 153 in methanol, DMSO, and toluene, as well as fluorescein in water.

Witnessing entangled two-photon absorption via quantum interferometry

Recent investigations have suggested that the use of non-classical states of light, such as entangled photon pairs, may open new and exciting avenues in experimental two-photon absorption spectroscopy. Despite several experimental studies of entangled two-photon absorption (eTPA), there is still a heated debate on whether eTPA has truly been observed. This interesting debate has arisen mainly because it has recently been argued that single-photon-loss mechanisms, such as scattering or hot-band absorption, may mimic the expected entangled-photon linear absorption behavior. In this work, we focus on transmission measurements of eTPA and explore three different two-photon quantum interferometers in the context of assessing eTPA. We demonstrate that the so-called N00N-state configuration is the only one among those considered insensitive to linear (single-photon) losses. Remarkably, our results show that N00N states may become a potentially powerful tool for quantum spectroscopy, placing them as a strong candidate for the certification of eTPA in an arbitrary sample.

Two-Photon Absorption and Multiphoton Excited Fluorescence of Acetamide-Chalcone Derivatives: The Role of Dimethylamine Group on the Nonlinear Optical and Photophysical Properties.

This work studied the effect of different electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups on the linear and nonlinear optical properties of acetamide-chalcone derivatives. The results showed that the addition of the dimethylamine group led to a large fluorescence emission (71% of fluorescence quantum yield in DMSO solution) that can be triggered by two and three-photon excitations, which is essential for biological applications. Furthermore, dimethylamine also red-shifts the lower energy state by approximately 90 nm, increasing the two-photon absorption cross-section of the lower energy band by more than 100% compared with the other studied compounds. All compounds presented two-electronic states observed through one and two-photon absorption spectroscopy and confirmed by Quantum Chemistry Calculations (QCCs). QCC results were also used to model the experimental two-photon absorption cross-sectional spectrum by the Sum-Over-States (SOS) approach, revealing a dependence between the coupling of the ground state with the first excited state and the transition dipole moment between these states.

Degenerate and non-degenerate two-photon absorption of coumarin dyes.

Two-photon absorption (2PA) spectroscopy is a robust bioimaging tool that depends on the determined cross-sections (σ2PA). The absorption of both photons occurs simultaneously with equivalent (degenerate) or different (non-degenerate) photon energies, D-2PA and ND-2PA, respectively. The former has been investigated experimentally and computationally for many systems, while the latter remains relatively unexplored computationally and limited experimentally. In this study, response theory using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and the 2-state model (2SM) have been utilized to investigate σD-2PA and σND-2PA for the excitation to the lowest energy singlet state (S1) of coumarin, coumarin 6, coumarin 120, coumarin 307, and coumarin 343. Solvents involved were methanol (MeOH), chloroform (ClForm), and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), where the latter leads to the largest σ2PA. Values of σ2PA are largest for coumarin 6 and lowest for coumarin, which illustrates the effect of substituents. The 2SM clarifies how the largest cross-sections correspond to molecules with the largest transition dipole moments, μ01. In general, σD-2SM computations agree with σD-2PA. Moreover, σND-2SM are in qualitative agreement with σND-2PA with comparable enhancement relative to σD-2PA. Overall, σND-2PA are larger than σD-2PA where the increase is in the range of 22% to 49%, depending on the coumarin as well as the relative energies of the two photons. This work aids in future investigations into various fluorophores to understand their photophysical properties for ND-2PA.

Molecular Insight into Dye-Surfactant Interaction at Premicellar Concentrations: A Combined Two-Photon Absorption and Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study.

Both electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions play pivotal roles in ligand-surfactant binding interaction, especially for ionic surfactants. While much studies have been reported in the micellar region, less attention has been paid on such interactions at a low (premicellar) surfactant concentration. We here study the interaction between the cationic dye rhodamine 6G (R6G) with surfactants of different charge types: anionic SDS, cationic CTAB, and nonionic Tx 100 using absorption and emission spectroscopy. We identify that R6G forms dimeric aggregates at a premicellar concentration of SDS. Formation of aggregates is also confirmed from classical simulation measurements. CTAB and Tx 100 do not form any such aggregate, presumably owing to unfavorable electrostatic interactions. For a molecular-level understanding, we perform two-photon absorption (TPA) spectroscopy for the same systems. TPA allows us to calculate the two-photon absorption cross section and subsequently the change in the dipole moment (Δμ) between ground and excited states of the dye. We calculate the Δμ and observe that it passes through a maximum at a surfactant concentration half of the critical micelle concentration of SDS. This observation imparts support to earlier quantum mechanical calculation, which infers deviation from the parallel orientation of the dye during surfactant-induced aggregation. We extended our measurements and varied the carbon chain length of the anionic surfactant, and we found that all of them exhibit a maximum in Δμ, while their relative magnitude is dependent on the surfactant carbon chain length.

Rashba splitting in organic\u2013inorganic lead\u2013halide perovskites revealed through two-photon absorption spectroscopy

The Rashba splitting in hybrid organic–inorganic lead–halide perovskites (HOIP) is particularly promising and yet controversial, due to questions surrounding the presence or absence of inversion symmetry. Here we utilize two-photon absorption spectroscopy to study inversion symmetry breaking in different phases of these materials. This is an all-optical technique to observe and quantify the Rashba effect as it probes the bulk of the materials. In particular, we measure two-photon excitation spectra of the photoluminescence in 2D, 3D, and anionic mixed HOIP crystals, and show that an additional band above, but close to the optical gap is the signature of new two-photon transition channels that originate from the Rashba splitting. The inversion symmetry breaking is believed to arise from ionic impurities that induce local electric fields. The observation of the Rashba splitting in the bulk of HOIP has significant implications for the understanding of their spintronic and optoelectronic device properties.

Bright squeezed vacuum for two-photon spectroscopy: simultaneously high resolution in time and frequency, space and wavevector

Entangled photons offer two advantages for two-photon absorption spectroscopy. One of them, the linear scaling of two-photon absorption rate with the input photon flux, is valid only at very low photon fluxes and is therefore impractical. The other is the overcoming of the classical constraints for simultaneous resolution in time-frequency and in space-wavevector. Here we consider bright squeezed vacuum (BSV) as an alternative to entangled photons. The efficiency increase it offers in comparison with coherent light is modest, but it does not depend on the photon flux. Moreover, and this is what we show in this work, BSV also provides simultaneously high resolution in time and frequency, and in space and wavevector. In our experiment, we measure the widths of the second-order correlation functions in space, time, frequency, and angle and demonstrate the violation of the constraint given by the Fourier transformation, in the case of photon pairs, known as the Mancini criterion of entanglement.

Electronic Structure of Liquid Alkanes: A Representative Case of Liquid Hexanes and Cyclohexane Studied Using Polarization-Dependent Two-Photon Absorption Spectroscopy.

Two-photon absorption (2PA) spectra of liquid cyclohexane and hexanes are reported for the energy range 6.4-8.5 eV (177-145 nm), providing detailed information about their electronic structures in bulk liquid. Using a broadband pump-probe fashion, we measured the continuous 2PA spectra by simultaneous absorption of a 266 nm (4.6 eV) pump photon and one UV-vis probe photon from the white-light continuum (1.8-3.9 eV). Theoretical one-photon absorption (1PA) and 2PA cross sections of isolated gas phase molecules are computed by the equation of motion coupled-cluster method with single and double substitutions (EOM-CCSD) to substantiate the assignment of the experimental spectra, and the natural transition orbital (NTO) analysis provides visualization of the participating orbitals in a transition. Our analysis suggests that upon solvation transitions at the lowest excitation energy involving promotion of electron to the 3s Rydberg orbitals are blue-shifted (∼0.55 eV for cyclohexane and ∼0.18 eV for hexanes) to a greater extent as compared to those involving other Rydberg orbitals, which is similar to the behavior observed for water and alcohols. All other transitions experience negligible (cyclohexane) or minor red-shift by ∼0.15-0.2 eV (hexane) upon solvation. In both alkanes, the spectra are entirely dominated by Rydberg transitions: the most intense bands in 1PA and 2PA spectra are due to the excitation of electrons to the Rydberg "p" and "d" type orbitals, respectively, although one transition terminating in the 3s Rydberg has significant 2PA strength. This work demonstrates that the gas phase electronic transition properties in alkanes are not significantly altered upon solvation. In addition, electronic structure calculations using an isolated-molecule framework appear to provide a reasonable starting point for a semiquantitative picture for spectral assignment and also to analyze the solvatochromic shifts for liquid phase absorption spectra.

Experimental feasibility of molecular two-photon absorption with isolated time-frequency-entangled photon pairs

Entangled photon pairs have been promised to deliver a substantial quantum advantage for two-photon absorption spectroscopy. However, recent work has challenged the previously reported magnitude of quantum enhancement in two-photon absorption. Here, we present an experimental comparison of sum-frequency generation and molecular absorption, each driven by isolated photon pairs. We establish an upper bound on the enhancement for entangled-two-photon absorption in Rhodamine-6G, which lies well below previously reported values.

Entangled two-photon absorption spectroscopy with varying pump wavelengths

In entangled two-photon absorption (eTPA) spectroscopy, information about the energy-level structure of an arbitrary sample is retrieved by Fourier transforming sets of measured two-photon absorption probabilities of entangled photon pairs where the degree of entanglement and the delay time between the photons are varied. This works well for simple systems but quickly becomes rather difficult when many intermediate states are involved. We propose and discuss an extension of eTPA spectroscopy that solves this problem by means of repeated measurements at different pump wavelengths, thus reducing the experimental complexity of eTPA spectroscopy by removing the need to control the correlations of the entangled photons. Specifically, we demonstrate that our extension works well for a variety of realistic experimental setups.

Frequency stabilization of a quantum cascade laser by weak resonant feedback from a Fabry-Perot cavity.

Frequency-stabilized mid-infrared lasers are valuable tools for precision molecular spectroscopy. However, their implementation remains limited by complicated stabilization schemes. Here we achieve optical self-locking of a quantum cascade laser to the resonant leak-out field of a highly mode-matched two-mirror cavity. The result is a simple approach to achieving stable frequencies from high-powered mid-infrared lasers. For short time scales (<0.1ms), we report a linewidth reduction factor of 3×10-6 to a linewidth of 12 Hz. Furthermore, we demonstrate two-photon cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy of an N2O overtone transition near a wavelength of 4.53 µm.

Ultrafast Transfer and Transient Entrapment of Photoexcited Mg Electron in Mg@C_{60}.

Electron relaxation is studied in endofullerene Mg@C_{60} after an initial localized photoexcitation in Mg by nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations. Two approaches to the electronic structure of the excited electronic states are used: (i)an independent particle approximation based on a density-functional theory description of molecular orbitals and (ii)a configuration-interaction description of the many-body effects. Both methods exhibit similar relaxation times, leading to an ultrafast decay and charge transfer from Mg to C_{60} within tens of femtoseconds. Method (i)further elicits a transient trap of the transferred electron that can delay the electron-hole recombination. Results shall motivate experiments to probe these ultrafast processes by two-photon transient absorption or photoelectron spectroscopy in gas phase, in solution, or as thin films.

Photoinduced Intramolecular Electron Transfer in Phenylene Ethynylene Naphthalimide Oligomers.

This paper reports a photophysical investigation of a series of phenylene ethynylene oligomers (OPE) that are end-substituted with a 1,8-naphthalene imide (NI) acceptor. The NI acceptor is attached to the terminus of the OPEs via an ethynylene (-C≡C-) unit that is linked at the 4-position of the NI unit. A series of three oligomers is investigated, OPE1-NI, OPE3-NI, and OPE5-NI, which contain 1, 3, and 5 phenylene ethynylene repeat units, respectively. The properties of the OPEn-NI series are compared to a corresponding set of unsubstituted OPEs, OPE3 and OPE5, which contain 3 and 5 phenylene ethynylene repeats, respectively. The photophysics of all the compounds are interrogated using a variety of techniques including steady-state absorption, steady-state fluorescence, two-photon absorption, time-resolved fluorescence, and transient absorption spectroscopy on femtosecond-to-microsecond time scales. The effect of solvent polarity on the properties of the oligomers is examined. The results show that the NI-substituted oligomers feature a lowest charge transfer (CT) excited state, where the OPE segment acts as the donor and the NI moiety is the acceptor (OPEn•+-NI•-). The absorption spectra in one-photon and two-photon exhibit a clear manifold of absorption features that can be attributed to direct CT absorption. In moderately polar solvents, the emission is dominated by a broad, solvatochromic band that is due to radiative decay from the CT excited state. Ultrafast transient absorption provides evidence for initial population of a locally excited state (LE) which in moderately polar solvents rapidly (∼1 ps) evolves into the CT excited state. The structure, spectroscopy, and dynamics of the CT state are qualitatively similar for OPE3-NI and OPE5-NI, suggesting that delocalization in the OPE segment does not have much effect on the structure or energetics of the CT excited state.

Local Electric Field Controls Fluorescence Quantum Yield of Red and Far-Red Fluorescent Proteins.

Genetically encoded probes with red-shifted absorption and fluorescence are highly desirable for imaging applications because they can report from deeper tissue layers with lower background and because they provide additional colors for multicolor imaging. Unfortunately, red and especially far-red fluorescent proteins have very low quantum yields, which undermines their other advantages. Elucidating the mechanism of nonradiative relaxation in red fluorescent proteins (RFPs) could help developing ones with higher quantum yields. Here we consider two possible mechanisms of fast nonradiative relaxation of electronic excitation in RFPs. The first, known as the energy gap law, predicts a steep exponential drop of fluorescence quantum yield with a systematic red shift of fluorescence frequency. In this case the relaxation of excitation occurs in the chromophore without any significant changes of its geometry. The second mechanism is related to a twisted intramolecular charge transfer in the excited state, followed by an ultrafast internal conversion. The chromophore twisting can strongly depend on the local electric field because the field can affect the activation energy. We present a spectroscopic method of evaluating local electric fields experienced by the chromophore in the protein environment. The method is based on linear and two-photon absorption spectroscopy, as well as on quantum-mechanically calculated parameters of the isolated chromophore. Using this method, which is substantiated by our molecular dynamics simulations, we obtain the components of electric field in the chromophore plane for seven different RFPs with the same chromophore structure. We find that in five of these RFPs, the nonradiative relaxation rate increases with the strength of the field along the chromophore axis directed from the center of imidazolinone ring to the center of phenolate ring. Furthermore, this rate depends on the corresponding electrostatic energy change (calculated from the known fields and charge displacements), in quantitative agreement with the Marcus theory of charge transfer. This result supports the dominant role of the twisted intramolecular charge transfer mechanism over the energy gap law for most of the studied RFPs. It provides important guidelines of how to shift the absorption wavelength of an RFP to the red, while keeping its brightness reasonably high.
