Theoretical analysis and predictions for the two-neutrino double electron capture of 124Xe

Abstract We provide a complete theoretical description of the two-neutrino electron capture in 124Xe improving both the nuclear and the atomic structure calculations. We improve the general formalism through the use of the Taylor expansion method, leading to higher order terms in the decay rate of the process. The nuclear part is treated with pn-QRPA and interacting shell model (ISM) methods. The nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) are calculated with the pn-QRPA method with isospin restoration by fixing the input parameters so that the experimental decay rate is reproduced, resulting in values significantly lower than in previous calculations. The validity of the pn-QRPA NMEs is tested by showing their values to be comparable with the ones for double-beta decay with emission of two electrons of 128,130Te, which have similar pairing features. Within the ISM, we reproduce the total experimental half-life within a factor of two and predict the capture fraction to the KK channel of about 74%. We also predict the capture fractions to other decay channels and show that for the cumulative decay to the KL1-KO1 channels, a capture fraction of about 24% could be observed experimentally. On the atomic side, calculations are improved by accounting for the Pauli blocking of the decay of innermost nucleon states and by considering all s-wave electrons available for capture, expanding beyond the K and L1 orbitals considered in previous studies. We also provide improved atomic relaxation energies of the final atomic states of 124Te, which may be used as input for background modeling in liquid Xenon experiments.

A Systematic Study of Two-Neutrino Double Electron Capture

In this paper, we update the phase-space factors for all two-neutrino double electron capture processes. The Dirac–Hartree–Fock–Slater self-consistent method is employed to describe the bound states of captured electrons, enabling a more realistic treatment of atomic screening and more precise binding energies of the captured electrons compared to previous investigations. Additionally, we consider all s-wave electrons available for capture, expanding beyond the K and L1 orbitals considered in prior studies. For light atoms, the increase associated with additional captures compensates for the decrease in decay rate caused by the more precise atomic screening. However, for medium and heavy atoms, an increase in the decay rate, up to 10% for the heaviest atoms, is observed due to the combination of these two effects. In the systematic analysis, we also include capture fractions for the first few dominant partial captures. Our precise model enables a close examination of low Q-value double electron capture in 152Gd, 164Er, and 242Cm, where partial KK captures are energetically forbidden. Finally, with the updated phase-space values, we recalculate the effective nuclear matrix elements and compare their spread with those associated with 2νβ−β− decay.

ZnO-based scintillating bolometers: new prospects to study double beta decay of 64Zn

The first detailed study on the performance of a ZnO-based cryogenic scintillating bolometer as a detector to search for rare processes in zinc isotopes was carried out. A 7.2 g ZnO low-temperature detector, containing more than 80% of zinc in its mass, exhibits good energy resolution of baseline noise 1.0–2.7 keV FWHM at various working temperatures resulting in a low-energy threshold for the experiment, 2.0–6.0 keV. The light yield for β/γ events was measured as 1.5(3) keV/MeV, while it varies for α particles in the range of 0.2–3.0 keV/MeV. The detector demonstrates an effective identification of β/γ events from α events using time-properties of only heat signals. The radiopurity of the ZnO crystal was evaluated using the Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, an ultra-low-background High Purity Ge γ-spectrometer, and bolometric measurements. Only limits were set at the level of 𝒪(1–100) mBq/kg on activities of 40K, 137Cs and daughter nuclides from the U/Th natural decay chains. The total internal α-activity was measured as 22(2) mBq/kg, with a major contribution caused by 6(1) mBq/kg of 232Th and 12(2) mBq/kg of 234U. Limits on double beta decay (DBD) processes in ^64Zn and 70Zn isotopes were set on the level of 𝒪(1017–1018) yr for various decay modes, profiting from 271 h of acquired background data in the above-ground lab. This study shows a good potential for ZnO-based scintillating bolometers to search for DBD processes of Zn isotopes, especially in 64Zn, with the most prominent spectral features at ∼ 10–20 keV, like the two-neutrino double electron capture. A 10 kg-scale experiment can reach the experimental sensitivity at the level of 𝒪(1024) yr.

Sensitivity of the NEXT experiment to Xe-124 double electron capture

Double electron capture by proton-rich nuclei is a second-order nuclear process analogous to double beta decay. Despite their similarities, the decay signature is quite different, potentially providing a new channel to measure the hypothesized neutrinoless mode of these decays. The Standard-Model-allowed two-neutrino double electron capture (2νEC EC) has been predicted for a number of isotopes, but only observed in 78Kr, 130Ba and, recently, 124Xe. The sensitivity to this decay establishes a benchmark for the ultimate experimental goal, namely the potential to discover also the lepton-number-violating neutrinoless version of this process, 0νEC EC. Here we report on the current sensitivity of the NEXT-White detector to 124Xe 2νEC EC and on the extrapolation to NEXT-100. Using simulated data for the 2νEC EC signal and real data from NEXT-White operated with 124Xe-depleted gas as background, we define an optimal event selection that maximizes the NEXT-White sensitivity. We estimate that, for NEXT-100 operated with xenon gas isotopically enriched with 1 kg of 124Xe and for a 5-year run, a sensitivity to the 2νEC EC half-life of 6 × 1022 y (at 90% confidence level) or better can be reached.

Precise Half-Life Values for Two-Neutrino Double-β Decay: 2020 Review

All existing positive results on two-neutrino double beta decay and two-neutrino double electron capture in different nuclei have been analyzed. Weighted average and recommended half-life values for 48Ca, 76Ge, 82Se, 96Zr, 100Mo, 100Mo - 100Ru (01+), 116Cd, 128Te, 130Te, 136Xe, 150Nd, 150Nd - 150Sm (01+), 238U, 78Kr, 124Xe and 130Ba have been obtained. Given the measured half-life values, effective nuclear matrix elements for all these transitions were calculated.

Search for two neutrino double electron capture of 124Xe and 126Xe in the full exposure of the LUX detector

Two-neutrino double electron capture is a process allowed in the standard model of particle physics. This rare decay has been observed in 78Kr, 130Ba and more recently in 124Xe. In this publication we report on the search for this process in 124Xe and 126Xe using the full exposure of the large underground xenon (LUX) experiment, in a total of 27769.5 kg-days. No evidence of a signal was observed, allowing us to set 90% C.L. lower limits for the half-lives of these decays of 2.0 × 1021 years for 124Xe and 1.9 × 1021 years for 126Xe.

Sensitive search for double electron capture on 124Xe in XMASS-I

Double electron capture is a rare nuclear decay process in which two orbital electrons are captured simultaneously in the same nucleus. We have conducted an improved search for two-neutrino double electron capture on 124Xe and 126Xe using 800.0 days of the XMASS-I data. As a result of fitting the observed energy spectra with the expected signal and background, no significant signal is found. Therefore, we set the most stringent lower limits on their half-lives at 2.1 × 1022 years for 124Xe and 1.9 × 1022 years for 126Xe at 90% confidence level. The limits get improved by a factor of 4.5 compared to the previous result.

Two-neutrino double electron capture on 124Xe based on an effective theory and the nuclear shell model

We study the two-neutrino double electron capture on 124Xe based on an effective theory (ET) and large-scale shell model calculations, two modern nuclear structure approaches that have been tested against Gamow-Teller and double-beta decay data. In the ET, the low-energy constants are fit to electron capture and β− transitions around xenon. For the nuclear shell model, we use an interaction in a large configuration space that reproduces the spectroscopy of nuclei in this mass region. For the dominant transition to the 124Te ground state, we find half-lives T1/22νECEC=(1.3−18)×1022y for the ET and T1/22νECEC=(0.43−2.9)×1022y for the shell model. The ET uncertainty leads to a half-life almost entirely consistent with present experimental limits and largely within the reach of ongoing experiments. The shell model half-life range overlaps with the ET, but extends less beyond current limits. Our findings thus suggest that the two-neutrino double electron capture on 124Xe has a good chance to be discovered by ongoing or future experiments. In addition, we present results for the two-neutrino double electron capture to excited states of 124Te.

Observation of two-neutrino double electron capture in 124Xe with XENON1T

Two-neutrino double electron capture (2νECEC) is a second-order weak-interaction process with a predicted half-life that surpasses the age of the Universe by many orders of magnitude1. Until now, indications of 2νECEC decays have only been seen for two isotopes2-5, 78Kr and 130Ba, and instruments with very low background levels are needed to detect them directly with high statistical significance6,7. The 2νECEC half-life is an important observable for nuclear structure models8-14 and its measurement represents a meaningful step in the search for neutrinoless double electron capture-the detection of which would establish the Majorana nature of the neutrino and would give access to the absolute neutrino mass15-17. Here we report the direct observation of 2νECEC in 124Xe with the XENON1T dark-matter detector. The significance of the signal is 4.4 standard deviations and the corresponding half-life of 1.8×1022years(statistical uncertainty, 0.5×1022years; systematic uncertainty, 0.1×1022years) is the longest measured directly so far. This study demonstrates that the low background and large target mass of xenon-based dark-matter detectors make them well suited for measuring rare processes and highlights the broad physics reach of larger next-generation experiments18-20.

Improved search for two-neutrino double electron capture on 124Xe and 126Xe using particle identification in XMASS-I

We conducted an improved search for the simultaneous capture of two $K$-shell electrons on the $^{124}$Xe and $^{126}$Xe nuclei with emission of two neutrinos using 800.0 days of data from the XMASS-I detector. A novel method to discriminate $\gamma$-ray/$X$-ray or double electron capture signals from $\beta$-ray background using scintillation time profiles was developed for this search. No significant signal was found when fitting the observed energy spectra with the expected signal and background. Therefore, we set the most stringent lower limits on the half-lives at $2.1 \times 10^{22}$ and $1.9 \times 10^{22}$ years for $^{124}$Xe and $^{126}$Xe, respectively, with 90% confidence level. These limits improve upon previously reported values by a factor of 4.5.

Search for double β-decays of 124Xe with XENON100 & XENON1T

The rare nuclear process of two-neutrino double electron capture, where two electrons are simultaneously captured from the atomic shell, has not yet been observed for 124Xe. A detection of this decay would provide a new reference for nuclear matrix element calculations. Moreover, if a neutrinoless mode were discovered, it would prove a Majorana nature of neutrinos and would shed light on the effective neutrino mass. The XENON dark matter project, with its dual-phase xenon time projection chambers XENON100 and XENON1T, is well suited for this rare event searches with signatures in the keV-region. The search with the XENON100 detector, containing 29 g of 124Xe, is explained as well as the outlook of its successor XENON1T, which contains 2 kg of the isotope in its active volume.

Search for two-neutrino double electron capture of Xe124 with XENON100

Two-neutrino double electron capture is a rare nuclear decay where two electrons are simultaneously captured from the atomic shell. For $^{124}$Xe this process has not yet been observed and its detection would provide a new reference for nuclear matrix element calculations. We have conducted a search for two-neutrino double electron capture from the K-shell of $^{124}$Xe using 7636 kg$\cdot$d of data from the XENON100 dark matter detector. Using a Bayesian analysis we observed no significant excess above background, leading to a lower 90 % credibility limit on the half-life $T_{1/2}>6.5\times10^{20}$ yr. We also evaluated the sensitivity of the XENON1T experiment, which is currently being commissioned, and find a sensitivity of $T_{1/2}>6.1\times10^{22}$ yr after an exposure of 2 t$\cdot$yr.

Search for two-neutrino double electron capture on 124Xe with the XMASS-I detector

Measurement of its two-neutrino mode would provide a new reference for the calculation of nuclear matrix elements whereas observation of its neutrinoless mode would demonstrate lepton number violation. A search for two-neutrino double electron capture on $^{124}$Xe is performed using 165.9 days of data collected with the XMASS-I liquid xenon detector. No significant excess above background was observed and we set a lower limit on the half-life as $4.7 \times 10^{21}$ years at 90% confidence level. The obtained limit has ruled out parts of some theoretical expectations. We obtain a lower limit on the $^{126}$Xe two-neutrino double electron capture half-life of $4.3 \times 10^{21}$ years at 90% confidence level as well.

Search for double electron capture on 124Xe with the XMASS-I detector

The XMASS project is a multi-purpose experiment using highly-purified liquid xenon scintillator located underground at the Kamioka Observatory in Japan. A search for two-neutrino double electron capture on 124Xe is performed using 165.9 days of data collected with the XMASS-I detector. No significant excess above background was observed and we set a lower limit on the half-life as 4.7 × 1021 years at 90% confidence level.

Experiment TGV II: results on double electron capture in 106Cd

The TGV II (Telescope Germanium Vertical) facility is a low background spectrometer operated in Modane Underground Laboratory. It aims at the study of double electron capture of 106Cd. The spectrometer is composed of 32 HPGe planar detectors interleaved with thin-foil samples made of 106Cd enriched to 75%.In 2006, the main run of phase I (1 year duration) was terminated yielding a new limit on half-life for two-neutrino double electron capture in 106Cd as 2.0x1020y. The new limit is significantly higher (by almost three orders of magnitude) than those already published.
