Modulating Pore Wall Chemistry Empowers Sonodynamic Activity of Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Framework Heterojunctions for Pro-Oxidative Nanotherapy.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have garnered growing interest in the field of biomedicine; however, their application in sonodynamic therapy remains underexplored due to limited understanding of their intrinsic activity and structure-property relationships. Here, we present a pore wall chemistry modulation strategy for empowering sonodynamic activity to two-dimensional (2D) COF heterojunctions through in situ growth of COFs on bismuth oxycarbonate nanosheets (B NSs). Compared to the negligible sonodynamic effects observed in the pristine B NSs, the 2D heterojunction with vinyl-decorated COF pore walls demonstrates a 3.6-fold enhancement in sonocatalytic singlet oxygen generation. This performance also significantly outperforms that of isoreticular COFs functionalized with methoxy or non-substituted groups. Mechanistic studies reveal that the vinyl groups in the B@COF (BC) heterojunction facilitate the separation and transfer of charge carriers while also enhancing the adsorption of oxygen molecules. Furthermore, peroxymonosulfate (PMS) loading into the porous COFs boosts the therapeutic efficacy of antitumor nanotherapy via sonocatalytic dual oxidative species generation. These findings underscore the critical role of pore wall chemistry in modulating the sonocatalytic properties of COFs, and advance the development of COF-based sonosensitizers for pro-oxidative applications.

Two-dimensional heterojunction photocatalyst based dipyrenylmercapto perylenediimide for efficient breaking C-O bond of lignin models

Photocatalysis has attracted widespread attention for the depolymerization of biomass into high-value aromatic under mild conditions. However, inorganic photocatalysts have drawbacks, such as low light efficiency and easy carrier recombination. Herein, a novel organic semiconductor dipyrenylmercapto perylenediimide (DPPDI) is synthesized, possessing a large conjugated plane by introducing two pyrenyl groups into the bay sites of perylenediimide, which is conducive to self-assembly forming two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets. Then, 2D heterojunctions were prepared by integrating DPPDI and P25 TiO2 through ultrasonic, which cleaves α-O-4 bonds in the lignin model benzyl phenyl ether (BPE). The Pd@4 %DPPDI/TiO2 can convert BPE completely within 30 min, and the α-O-4 bond cleavage selectivity reached ∼100 %, twice that of Pd@TiO2. DPPDI/TiO2 heterojunction not only extended the light-absorption wavelength but also mitigated recombination of photogenerated carriers, which increased the efficiency of photocatalysis. This work shows the potential application of 2D organo-inorganic heterojunction-based perylenediimide derivates in the field of biomass depolymerization.

Enhanced spintronic and electronic properties in MTe2-GdCl2 (M=Mo, W) heterojunctions

Two-dimensional ferromagnetic heterojunctions with direct bandgaps and high Curie temperatures (TC) are promising candidates for applications in nanoelectronics and spintronics. Here, we design a Mo(W)Te₂-GdCl₂ heterojunction by integrating experimentally synthesized monolayer Mo(W)Te₂ with recently predicted ferromagnetic monolayer GdCl2. Our first-principles calculations reveal that these heterojunctions display a type-II (staggered) band alignment with a narrow direct bandgap ranging from 1.10 to 1.23 eV, using the HSE06 method. We have incorporated spin-orbit coupling and conducted Monte Carlo simulations to precisely estimate the magnetic ground states of these systems. We find that spin-orbit coupling plays a crucial role in the valence band splitting at the K-point in both heterojunctions. The magnetic anisotropy, TC, and optical performance of individual monolayers are enhanced within these heterojunctions. Under compressive strain, the TC of the heterojunctions increases significantly, reaching about 278 K at -7 % strain, due to strengthened super-exchange interactions between Gd-d and Cl-p orbitals and enhanced interlayer charge transfer. In addition, the band alignment shifts from type-II to type-I under -3 % compressive strain, while tensile strain maintains the type-II band alignment. Our findings offer a viable pathway for developing ferromagnetic semiconducting heterojunctions suitable for nanoelectronic and spintronic applications.

Electronic and Optical Properties of 2D Heterostructure Bilayers of Graphene, Borophene and 2D Boron Carbides from First Principles.

In the present work the atomic, electronic and optical properties of two-dimensional graphene, borophene, and boron carbide heterojunction bilayer systems (Graphene-BC3, Graphene-Borophene and Graphene-B4C3) as well as their constituent monolayers are investigated on the basis of first-principles calculations using the HSE06 hybrid functional. Our calculations show that while borophene is metallic, both monolayer BC3 and B4C3 are indirect semiconductors, with band-gaps of 1.822 eV and 2.381 eV as obtained using HSE06. The Graphene-BC3 and Graphene-B4C3 bilayer heterojunction systems maintain the Dirac point-like character of graphene at the K-point with the opening of a very small gap (20-50 meV) and are essentially semi-metals, while Graphene-Borophene is metallic. All bilayer heterostructure systems possess absorbance in the visible region where the resonance frequency and resonance absorption peak intensity vary between structures. Remarkably, all heterojunctions support plasmons within the range 16.5-18.5 eV, while Graphene-B4C3 and Graphene-Borophene exhibit a π-type plasmon within the region 4-6 eV, with the latter possessing an additional plasmon at the lower energy of 1.5-3 eV. The dielectric tensor for Graphene-B4C3 exhibits complex off-diagonal elements due to the lower P3 space group symmetry indicating it has anisotropic dielectric properties and could exhibit optically active (chiral) effects. Our study shows that the two-dimensional heterostructures have desirable optical properties broadening the potential applications of the constituent monolayers.

One-Selector-One-Resistor Integrated Memory Cells Based on Two-Dimensional Heterojunction Memory Selectors.

Selectors are critical components for reducing the sneak path leakage currents in emerging resistive random-access memory (RRAM) arrays. Two-dimensional (2D) materials provide a rich choice of materials with van der Waals stacking to form the heterostructure selectors with controllable energy barriers. Here, we experimentally demonstrate 2D-material-based heterostructure selectors with exponential current-voltage (I-V) relationships and integrate them with hafnium oxide (HfOx)-based RRAMs, forming one-selector-one-resistor (1S1R) cells. The multilayer graphene (MG)/tungsten disulfide (WS2)/platinum (Pt) selector contains two asymmetric heterojunctions with different Schottky barriers, which lead to highly nonlinear and asymmetric I-V characteristics. The 2D selectors in 1S1R cells can successfully drive RRAMs, reduce sneak path leakage current by more than 100 times, and provide the set compliance current. The 1S1R cells are further modeled and integrated into both planar and 3D memory arrays, with circuit-level simulations demonstrating that the presence of 2D selectors in large memory arrays can reduce the power consumption by up to 86%, improve the read/write margin by up to 31%, and avoid write failure. Such a platform holds high potential for constructing 3D high-density memories and performing in-memory computing.

Contributions of Edge and Internal Atoms to the Friction of Two-Dimensional Heterojunctions.

The weak interlayer interaction and strong intralayer bonding in Van der Waals (vdW) layered materials give rise to ultralow friction at incommensurate contact interfaces, a phenomenon known as structural superlubricity. This phenomenon is complicated by the interplay between atomic degrees of freedom, twist angle, and normal force. In this Letter, we exploit naturally occurring cracks in vdW crystals and microfabrication techniques to qualitatively separate the contributions of edge, complete moiré tile, and incomplete moiré rim regions. It is observed that friction from the incomplete moiré rim region, scaling linearly with the rim area, plays a dominant role in determining the twist angle dependence of friction. Interestingly, despite lower friction contributions from complete moirés, friction from a complete moiré tile is independent of moiré size; consequently, friction from the moiré tile scales linearly with the total number of moirés. By integrating the contributions from edge, moiré tile, and incomplete moiré rim, a friction law for vdW heterojunctions is proposed. Finally, friction changes from positively to negatively correlating with normal force, contingent on the suppression of moiré ridge and the dissipation from edge atoms.

Enhanced Performance of a Self-Powered Au/WSe2/Ta2NiS5/Au Heterojunction by the Interfacial Pyro-phototronic Effect.

The growing need for wearable electronics and self-powered electronic devices has driven the successful development of self-powered two-dimensional (2D) photodetectors using the photovoltaic effect of Schottky and p-n junctions. However, there is an urgent need to develop multifunctional photodetectors capable of harvesting energy from different sources to overcome their limitations in efficiency and cost. While the pyro-phototronic effect has been shown to effectively influence optoelectronic processes in heterojunctions, the number of reported two-dimensional heterojunctions exhibiting interfacial pyroelectricity is still limited, and the responsivity and detectivity based on such heterojunctions tend to be low. In this study, a photodetector based on an Au/WSe2/Ta2NiS5/Au heterojunction was designed and fabricated. By harnessing the interfacial pyro-phototronic effect arising from the built-in electric fields at the Au/WSe2 Schottky junction and WSe2/Ta2NiS5 heterojunction, the photodetector exhibits a broadband response range of 405-1064 nm, with approximately 12 times enhancement in output current compared to solely relying on the photovoltaic effect. Under 660 nm light irradiation, the self-powered photodetector exhibits a responsivity of 121 mA/W, an external quantum efficiency of 22.64%, and a specific detectivity of 2 × 1012 Jones. Notably, its pyroelectric coefficient exceeds 8 × 103 μC·m-2·K-1. These findings pave the way for effectively detecting weak light and temperature variation while presenting a new strategy for developing high-performance photodetectors utilizing the interfacial pyro-phototronic effect.

Construction of two-dimensional heterojunctions based on metal-free semiconductor materials and Covalent Organic Frameworks for exceptional solar energy catalysis

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are newly developed crystalline substances that are garnering growing interest because of their ultra-high porosity, crystalline nature, and easy modified architecture, showing promise in the field of photocatalysis. However, it is difficult for pure COFs materials to achieve excellent photocatalytic hydrogen production due to their severe carrier recombination problems. To mitigate this crucial issue, establishing heterojunction is deemed an effective approach. Nonetheless, many of the metal-containing materials that have been used to construct heterojunctions with COFs own a number of drawbacks, including small specific surface area and rare active sites (for inorganic semiconductor materials), wider bandgaps and higher preparation costs (for MOFs). Therefore, it is necessary to choose metal-free materials that are easy to prepare. Red phosphorus (RP), as a semiconductor material without metal components, with suitable bandgap, moderate redox potential, relatively minimal toxicity, is affordable and readily available. Herein, a range of RP/TpPa-1-COF (RP/TP1C) composites have been successfully prepared through solvothermal method. The two-dimensional structure of the two materials causes strong interactions between the materials, and the construction of heterojunctions effectively inhibits the recombination of photogenic charge carrier. As a consequence, the 9% RP/TP1C composite, with the optimal photocatalytic ability, achieves a photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of 6.93 mmol g−1 h−1, demonstrating a 10.19-fold increase compared to that of bare RP and a 4.08-fold improvement over that of pure TP1C. This article offers a novel and innovative method for the advancement of efficient COFs-based photocatalysts.

(Invited) Sub-Particle-Resolution Microscopy Reveals Inter-Facet Junction Effects on Particulate Photoelectrodes

This presentation will describe our recent work in using single-particle/single-molecule imaging approaches to study photoelectrocatalytic properties of particulate semiconductor photocatalysts, important for many solar energy conversion technologies. In anisotropically shaped photocatalyst particles, the different constituent facets differ in their electronic and thus photoelectrocatalytic properties, and between different facets they may form inter-facet junctions at their adjoining edges, analogous to lateral two-dimensional (2D) heterojunctions or pseudo-2D junctions made of few-layer 2D materials. Using subfacet-level multimodal functional imaging, we uncover inter-facet junction effects on anisotropically shaped bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) particles and identify the characteristics of near-edge transition zones on the particle surface, which underpin the whole-particle photoelectrochemistry. The imaging tools, the analytical framework and the inter-facet junction concept pave new avenues towards understanding, predicting and engineering (opto)electronic and photoelectrochemical properties of faceted semiconducting materials, with broad implications in energy science and semiconductor technology.

First-Principles Study of the Schottky Contact, Tunneling Probability, and Optical Properties of MX/TiB4 Heterojunctions (M = Ge, Sn; X = S, Se, Te): Strain Engineering Tunability.

Designing two-dimensional (2D) heterojunctions with rapid response and minimal energy consumption holds immense significance for the advancement of the next generation of electronic devices. Here, we construct a series of Schottky heterojunctions based on TiB4 monolayer and group-IV monochalcogenide monolayers MX (M = Ge, Sn; X = S, Se, Te). Using first-principles calculations, we investigate the structural stability, Schottky contact barrier, tunneling probability, and optical properties of MX/TiB4 heterojunctions. The calculated binding energies reveal that X-type MX/TiB4 heterojunctions exhibit more stable structures than M- and C-type stacking modes. Schottky barrier heights (SBHs) indicate that X-type GeSe/TiB4 and GeTe/TiB4 form n-type Schottky contacts with SBHs of 0.497 and 0.132 eV, respectively, while SnS/TiB4 and SnSe/TiB4 form p-type Schottky contacts with SBHs of 0.557 and 0.418 eV, respectively. Moreover, X-type MX/TiB4 heterojunctions exhibit high susceptibility to interlayer electron tunneling due to their large tunneling probability and strong interlayer interaction. Meanwhile, enhanced optical absorption capacity in MX/TiB4 heterojunctions is also observed compared with individual TiB4 and MX monolayers. By applying in-plane biaxial strain, the transformation of MX/TiB4 heterojunctions from a Schottky contact to an Ohmic contact can also be realized. Our findings could offer valuable candidate materials and guidance for the design of the next generation of nanodevices with high electronic and optical performances.

Construction of atom co-sharing Bi/Bi4O5Br2 nanosheet heterojunction for plasmonic-enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalytic antibacterial activity

The rapid advancement of photodynamic therapy (PDT) antibacterial materials has led to promising alternatives to antibiotics for treating bacterial infections. However, antibacterial drugs have poor light absorption and utilization rates, which limits their practical application. Constructing two-dimensional (2D) heterojunctions from materials with matching photophysical properties has emerged as a highly effective strategy for achieving high-efficiency photo-antibacterial performance. Here, we designed and prepared an atom co-sharing Bi/Bi4O5Br2 nanosheet heterojunction by a simple in situ reduction. This heterojunction material combines outstanding biocompatibility with excellent bactericidal efficiency, which exceeded 90 % against Escherichia coli (a Gram-negative bacterium) and Staphylococcus aureus (a Gram-positive bacterium) under visible light irradiation, around nine-fold higher than that with pure Bi4O5Br2 nanosheets. The results suggest that localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of shared Bi atoms on the Bi4O5Br2 nanosheets promotes light utilization and the separation and transfer of photo-generated charges, thus producing more abundant reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can partake in the PDT antibacterial effect. Our study underscores the potential utility of LSPR-enhanced Bi-based nanosheet heterojunctions for safe and efficient PDT to combat bacterial infections.

Highly-dispersed 2D NiFeP/CoP heterojunction trifunctional catalyst for efficient electrolysis of water and urea

The electrocatalytic production of “green hydrogen”, such as through the electrolysis of water or urea has been vigorously advocated to alleviate the energy crisis. However, their electrode reactions including oxygen evolution reaction (OER), urea oxidation reaction (UOR), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) all suffer from sluggish kinetics, which urgently need catalysts to accelerate the processes. Herein, we design and prepare an OER/UOR/HER trifunctional catalyst by transforming the homemade CoO nanorod into a two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin heterojunction nickel–iron-cobalt hybrid phosphides nanosheet (NiFeP/CoP) via a hydrothermal-phosphorization method. Consequently, a strong electronic interaction was found among the Ni2P/FeP4/CoP heterogeneous interfaces, which regulates the electronic structure. Besides the high mass transfer property of 2D nanosheet, Ni2P/FeP4/CoP displays improved OER/UOR/HER performance. At 10 mA cm−2, the OER overpotential reaches 274 mV in 1.0 M KOH, and the potential of UOR is only 1.389 V in 1.0 M KOH and 0.33 M urea. More strikingly, the two-electrode systems for electrolysis water and urea-assisted electrolysis water assembled by NiFeP/CoP could maintain long-term stability for 35 h and 12 h, respectively. This work may help to pave the way for upcoming research horizons of multifunctional electrocatalysts.

Charge transfer dynamics in C3N4 encapsulated Cs3Bi2Br9 nanocrystals heterojunction for photocatalytic application

Perovskite materials have shown great application prospects in the field of photocatalysis due to their excellent photoelectric properties. However, the toxicity of lead and material instability limit its application. In this work, the heterojunction based on C3N4 thin layer encapsulated lead-free Cs3Bi2Br9 nanocrystals was constructed by electrostatic self-assembly method. This combination way does not disrupt the electronic, crystalline and structural properties of C3N4 and Cs3Bi2Br9. Fluorescence quenching in C3N4/Cs3Bi2Br9 composite is ascribed to the charge transfer process, which could be directly observed by spatially and temporally resolved fluorescence mapping image. The synergistic effect between C3N4 and Cs3Bi2Br9 can significantly improve the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of RhB, 98 % at 1 h. The stability of the composite was enhanced due to the special encapsulation effect. This work will provide a guideline for the construction of two-dimensional materials and perovskite heterojunction systems in the field of photocatalysis.

Two-Dimensional Layered Heterojunctions for Photoelectrocatalysis.

Two-dimensional (2D) layered nanomaterial heterostructures, arising from the combination of 2D materials with other low-dimensional species, feature a large surface area to volume ratio, which provides a high density of active sites for catalytic applications and for (photo)electrocatalysis (PEC). Meanwhile, their electronic band structure and high electrical conductivity enable efficient charge transfer (CT) between the active material and the substrate, which is essential for catalytic activity. In recent years, researchers have demonstrated the potential of a range of 2D material interfaces, such as graphene, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), metal chalcogenides (MCs), and MXenes, for (photo)electrocatalytic applications. For instance, MCs such as MoS2 and WS2 have shown excellent catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution, while graphene and MXenes have been used for the reduction of carbon dioxide to higher value chemicals. However, despite their great potential, there are still major challenges that need to be addressed to fully realize the potential of 2D materials for PEC. For example, their stability under harsh reaction conditions, as well as their scalability for large-scale production are important factors to be considered. Generating heterojunctions (HJs) by combining 2D layered structures with other nanomaterials is a promising method to improve the photoelectrocatalytic properties of the former. In this review, we inspect thoroughly the recent literature, to demonstrate the significant potential that arises from utilizing 2D layered heterostructures in PEC processes across a broad spectrum of applications, from energy conversion and storage to environmental remediation. With the ongoing research and development, it is likely that the potential of these materials will be fully expressed in the near future.

Toward highly-robust MXene hybrid memristor by synergetic ionotronic modification and two-dimensional heterojunction

MXene is an emerging two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial composed of several atomic layers of transition metal carbide/nitride/carbonitride. Due to its metal-analogous conductivity and rich surface functional groups, the facile surface modification of MXene is promising for extending its functionality into semiconductors. However, the application of surface-modulated MXene in robust memristor devices remains rarely reported. Here, the organic dye of celestine blue with conjugated skeleton and ionic interaction is employed to modify MXene, which succeeds to serve as the switching element in memristor device with synergetic ionotronic (ionic–electronic) property. Moreover, the device affords highly-robust performance through rational 2D sandwich heterojunction design. The underlying mechanism is elaborately clarified by theoretical charge transport modelling and experimental scanning electron microscopy analysis. This study sheds light on the prospect of high-performance MXene-based memristors through ionotronic modification strategy and provides efficient guidelines for broadening the application of novel 2D nanomaterials in non-volatile memory.

Integrating Full-Color 2D Optical Waveguide and Heterojunction Engineering in Halide Microsheets for Multichannel Photonic Logical Gates.

Ensuring information security has emerged as a paramount concern in contemporary human society. Substantial advancements in this regard can be achieved by leveraging photonic signals as the primary information carriers, utilizing photonic logical gates capable of wavelength tunability across various time and spatial domains. However, the challenge remains in the rational design of materials possessing space-time-color multiple-resolution capabilities. In this work, a facile approach is proposed for crafting metal-organic halides (MOHs) that offer space-time-color resolution. These MOHs integrate time-resolved room temperature phosphorescence and color-resolved excitation wavelength dependencies with both space-resolved ex situ optical waveguides and in situ heterojunctions. Capitalizing on these multifaceted properties, MOHs-based two-dimensional (2D) optical waveguides and heterojunctions exhibit the ability to tune full-color emissions across the spectra from blue to red, operating within different spatial and temporal scales. Therefore, this work introduces an effective methodology for engineering space-time-color resolved MOH microstructures, holding significant promise for the development of high-density photonic logical devices.

Diammonium cation pre-intercalation into inorganic framework for efficient Dion-Jacobson perovskite solar cells

The two-dimensional and three-dimensional (2D/3D) perovskite heterojunction has garnered significant attention in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) owing to the superior stability, modified band alignment and suppressed defects. Here, a pre-intercalation strategy involving bulky cations into inorganic framework to construct a buried 2D/3D perovskite heterojunction is proposed. The incorporation of bulky cation into PbI2 not only leads to the formation of well-oriented 2D nanoplates, but also disrupts the compact inorganic structure. It results in substantially increased grain boundaries at the buried interface, facilitating the complete reaction with small cations. Additionally, the pre-intercalated bulky cation acts as a template for the oriented growth of perovskite layer, leading to significantly reduced defects, enlarged crystal size and enhanced orientation. Furthermore, the advanced formation of buried 2D phases constructs a bottom-up 2D/3D perovskite heterojunction, enhancing carrier extraction and reducing energy loss in the PSCs. The resulting PSC achieves a champion power conversion efficiency of 23.40 %, surpassing the control device of 20.64 %. Moreover, the PSC maintains 88 % of its initial efficiency after 1050 h continuous efficiency tracking and retains over 97 % of its performance for 2232 h under a low humidity condition. Therefore, the pre-intercalation strategy represents a promising approach for both efficiency and stability challenges in PSCs.

2D Lateral Heterojunction Arrays with Tailored Interface Band Bending.

Two-dimensional (2D) lateral heterojunction arrays, characterized by well-defined electronic interfaces, hold significant promise for advancing next-generation electronic devices. Despite this potential, the efficient synthesis of high-density lateral heterojunctions with tunable interfacial band alignment remains a challenging. Here, a novel strategy is reported for the fabrication of lateral heterojunction arrays between monolayer Si2Te2 grown on Sb2Te3 (ML-Si2Te2@Sb2Te3) and one-quintuple-layer Sb2Te3 grown on monolayer Si2Te2 (1QL-Sb2Te3@ML-Si2Te2) on a p-doped Sb2Te3 substrate. The site-specific formation of numerous periodically arranged 2D ML-Si2Te2@Sb2Te3/1QL-Sb2Te3@ML-Si2Te2 lateral heterojunctions is realized solely through three epitaxial growth steps of thick-Sb2Te3, ML-Si2Te2, and 1QL-Sb2Te3 films, sequentially. More importantly, the precisely engineering of the interfacial band alignment is realized, by manipulating the substrate's p-doping effect with lateral spatial dependency, on each ML-Si2Te2@Sb2Te3/1QL-Sb2Te3@ML-Si2Te2 junction. Atomically sharp interfaces of the junctions with continuous lattices are observed by scanning tunneling microscopy. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements directly reveal the tailored type-II band bending at the interface. This reported strategy opens avenues for advancing lateral epitaxy technology, facilitating practical applications of 2D in-plane heterojunctions.

Two-dimensional heterojunction layered graphene oxide/graphitic carbon nitride photocatalyst for removal of toxic environmental dye methylene blue

The direct thermal polymerization techniques were applied to prepare the graphene oxide (GO)-graphitic carbon nitride (gCN) hybrid structure. The prepared hybrid heterojunction GO-gCN nanosheets were utilized as a photocatalyst to remove model pollutants methylene blue (MB) dye. The basic physio-chemical properties of GO-gCN layered materials have been analyzed by various characterization techniques. In addition, the proposed materials have a higher photocatalytic ability toward the degradation of aqueous solution of MB dye under visible light irradiation within a short treatment time. This is because it's the synergistic effects of GO-gCN layer-by-layer structures produced by π─π stacking with charge-transfer interactions. The gCN with GO composite can able to enhance the charge transfer and light-harvesting properties. Under the influence of photocatalyst, the surface of Graphene oxide undergoes the separation and combination of carbonyl radicals, hydroxyl radicals, epoxy radicals, and electron-hole pairs. This enhances the absorption of visible light and improves the degradation of MB, when GO is incorporated into gCN. The removal efficiency of MB reached up to 82.311% within the short treatment time.

Strong polarization sensitivity in a two-dimensional MoS2/WSe2 heterojunction for self-powered photodetection

Polarization-sensitive photodetectors have received considerable attention for their exceptional optoelectronic properties that depend on polarization. It is an excellent method to reduce energy consumption, system's sizes, and cost by constructing self-powered heterojunctions using the two-dimensional materials with asymmetry structure. In this report, we present a self-powered MoS2/WSe2 heterojunction capable of polarized photodetection. The heterojunction exhibits both photovoltaic and pyroelectric effects, which are correlated with the polarized signals. Interestingly, there is a 90° polarization angle between the photovoltaic and pyroelectric effects due to the introduction of in-plane structural polarization. The photovoltaic effect achieves the highest specific detectivity (D*) of about 5 × 1012 Jones when the light polarization is parallel to the in-plane structural polarization. Conversely, the pyroelectric effect dominates and yields the highest D* of about 6 × 109 Jones when the light polarization is perpendicular to the in-plane structural polarization. These findings demonstrate that the specific detectivity of the heterojunction can vary based on the orientation of the light polarization relative to the in-plane structural polarization due to distinct physical mechanisms. Moreover, the self-powered MoS2/WSe2 heterojunction enables simultaneous detection of optical power density and its change rate for polarized light. This study highlights the potential application of two-dimensional heterojunctions for polarization-sensitive self-powered photodetection in the future.
