Origin of Persisting Photoresponse of One-Year Aged Two-Dimensional Lead Halide Perovskites Stored in Air under Dark Conditions.

Two-dimensional halide perovskites are promising for advanced photonic, optoelectronic, and photovoltaic applications. However, their long-term stability is still a critical factor limiting their implementation into further commercial applications. Here, we present an environmental stability analysis of BA2(MA)n-1PbnI3n+1 (BA = C4H12N+, MA = CH6N+) two-dimensional perovskites with the lowest quantum well thicknesses of n = 1 and n = 2, after 1 year of aging under ambient humidity, oxygen content, and light conditions. We observed that both crystal phases (n = 1 and 2) degraded similarly, resulting in the removal of organic components and crystal decomposition into PbI2, Pb oxides, and Pb hydroxides. However, we have found a significant difference between their aging under ambient light and dark conditions, affecting their degraded morphology and photoactivity. Both crystal phases exposed to ambient light aged into a morphology characterized by the formation of several pinholes and voids, accompanied by photoluminescence degradation. Samples stored under dark conditions surprisingly preserved their photoluminescence activity, which morphologically aged into microrod structures. We conclude that the observed loss of photoactivity of 2D perovskites aged under ambient light is attributed to photoaccelerated degradation processes causing faster crystal surface photo-oxidation accompanied by a creation of multiple I vacancies and hydration of the inner crystal. The retainment of photoactivity in 2D perovskites aged under dark conditions is attributed to slower surface oxidation processes into Pb salts, as confirmed by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The formed surface layer even allows for a layer-by-layer degradation and acts as a protection barrier against further additional loss of I atoms and the consequent hydration of the inner part of samples. We demonstrate that light is the most critical external factor accelerating 2D perovskite degradation processes in ambient air and thus affecting their long-term stability. We conclude in this work that perovskite material structural engineering together with their surface passivation or encapsulation strategical techniques applied is an essential step for their further application into long-term stable commercial devices.

Linearly programmable two-dimensional halide perovskite memristor arrays for neuromorphic computing.

The exotic properties of three-dimensional halide perovskites, such as mixed ionic-electronic conductivity and feasible ion migration, have enabled them to challenge traditional memristive materials. However, the poor moisture stability and difficulty in controlling ion transport due to their polycrystalline nature have hindered their use as a neuromorphic hardware. Recently, two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites have emerged as promising artificial synapses owing to their phase versatility, microstructural anisotropy in electrical and optoelectronic properties, and excellent moisture resistance. However, their asymmetrical and nonlinear conductance changes still limit the efficiency of training and accuracy of inference. Here we achieve highly linear and symmetrical conductance changes in Dion-Jacobson 2D perovskites. We further build a 7 × 7 crossbar array based on analogue perovskite synapses, achieving a high device yield, low variation with synaptic weight storing capability, multi-level analogue states with long retention, and moisture stability over 7 months. We explore the potential of such devices in large-scale image inference via simulations and show an accuracy within 0.08% of the theoretical limit. The excellent device performance is attributed to the elimination of gaps between inorganic layers, allowing the halide vacancies to migrate homogeneously regardless of grain boundaries. This was confirmed by first-principles calculations and experimental analysis.

Moiré superlattices in twisted two-dimensional halide perovskites.

Moiré superlattices have emerged as a new platform for studying strongly correlated quantum phenomena, but these systems have been largely limited to van der Waals layer two-dimensional materials. Here we introduce moiré superlattices leveraging ultrathin, ligand-free halide perovskites, facilitated by ionic interactions. Square moiré superlattices with varying periodic lengths are clearly visualized through high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Twist-angle-dependent transient photoluminescence microscopy and electrical characterizations indicate the emergence of localized bright excitons and trapped charge carriers near a twist angle of ~10°. The localized excitons are accompanied by enhanced exciton emission, attributed to an increased oscillator strength by a theoretically predicted flat band. This research showcases the promise of two-dimensional perovskites as unique room-temperature moiré materials.

(Invited) Two-Dimensional Organic-Perovskite Hybrid Materials and Heterostructures

Epitaxial heterostructures based on oxide perovskites and III–V, II–VI and transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors form the foundation of modern electronics and optoelectronics. Halide perovskites—an emerging family of tunable semiconductors with desirable properties—are attractive for applications such as solution-processed solar cells, light-emitting diodes, detectors and lasers. Their inherently soft crystal lattice allows greater tolerance to lattice mismatch, making them promising for heterostructure formation and semiconductor integration. Atomically sharp epitaxial interfaces are necessary to improve performance and for device miniaturization. However, epitaxial growth of atomically sharp heterostructures of halide perovskites has not yet been achieved, owing to their high intrinsic ion mobility and their poor chemical stability. Therefore, understanding the origins of this instability and identifying effective approaches to suppress ion diffusion are of great importance. In this talk I will present an effective strategy to substantially inhibit in-plane ion diffusion in two-dimensional halide perovskites by incorporating rigid π-conjugated organic ligands. Highly stable and tunable lateral and vertical epitaxial heterostructures, multiheterostructures and superlattices will be demonstrated. Furthermore, using these 2D heterostructures as a new platform, I will present our recent efforts in 1) quantitatively understanding the anion inter-diffusions and migrations, and 2) controlling and manipulating exciton transport and light-emission in halide perovskites.

High-performance transistors based on monolayer all-inorganic two-dimensional halide perovskite Cs2PbI2Cl2 and its optoelectronic application

The two-dimensional (2D) Ruddlesden−Popper phase all-inorganic halide perovskite Cs2PbI2Cl2 has attracted tremendous attention because of its high carrier mobility, strong light-absorbing ability, and excellent environmental stability, possessing enormous potential for use as a high-performance optoelectronic device. Here, we present two transistor devices based on monolayer (ML) Cs2PbI2Cl2 and reveal their performance and current transport mechanisms through ab initio quantum transport calculations. The n-type 10 nm metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor shows a high on-state current Ion of 3160 μA/μm, and excellent performance regarding subthreshold swing, intrinsic delay time (τ), and power consumption, which completely match the International Roadmap for Device and Systems (2021 version) targets for high-performance devices and low-power devices in 2028. Moreover, phototransistors based on monolayer Cs2PbI2Cl2 also display a strong response to UV light, with a light-to-dark current ratio reaching a maximum of 104. Meanwhile, a high specific detectivity of 2.45 × 1011 Jones is obtained. The results of our study suggest that ML Cs2PbI2Cl2 is a promising candidate for high-performance transistors.

Tailoring a Two-Dimensional Halide Perovskite Composed of the Secondary Amine Cation for Anisotropic X-ray Responses.

Two-dimensional (2D) metal-halide perovskites have shown broad application prospects in the field of optoelectronic detection. The presence of the natural quantum-well structure results in strong anisotropy of physical properties, while studies on anisotropic X-ray responses remain insufficient. Here, we present an intriguing anisotropy of X-ray-responsive behaviors in a 2D halide perovskite, (t-ACH)2(DMA)Pb2Br7 (1, where t-ACH is trans-4-(aminomethyl)cyclohexanecarboxylate and DMA is dimethylamine), in which the secondary amine DMA+ cation with a large ionic radius locates inside the perovskite cage to form inorganic frameworks. The alternative alignment of inorganic slabs and organic bilayers creates a typical quantum-well architecture, which accounts for the generation of photoelectronic anisotropy. High-quality crystals of 1 exhibit notable semiconducting properties with a large μτ product (1.9 × 10-4 cm2 V-1). Intriguingly, 1 has better X-ray detection sensitivity (∼569.9 μC Gyair-1 cm-2) along the in-plane direction, which is attributed to its excellent charge carrier transport performance in this direction. Conversely, the higher resistance stemming from the organic barrier results in a lower detection limit along the out-of-plane direction (∼78.1 nGyair s-1), much lower than the medical diagnostic criteria (∼5.5 μGyair s-1). This work might open up new possibilities for the creative use of hybrid perovskites in direct X-ray detection.

Organic and inorganic sublattice coupling in two-dimensional lead halide perovskites

Two-dimensional layered organic-inorganic halide perovskites have successfully spread to diverse optoelectronic applications. Nevertheless, there remain gaps in our understanding of the interactions between organic and inorganic sublattices that form the foundation of their remarkable properties. Here, we examine these interactions using pump-probe spectroscopy and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Unlike off-resonant pumping, resonant excitation of the organic sublattice alters both the electronic and lattice degrees of freedom within the inorganic sublattice, indicating the existence of electronic coupling. Theoretical simulations verify that the reduced bandgap is likely due to the enhanced distortion index of the inorganic octahedra. Further evidence of the mechanical coupling between these two sublattices is revealed through the slow heat transfer process, where the resultant lattice tensile strain launches coherent longitudinal acoustic phonons. Our findings explicate the intimate electronic and mechanical couplings between the organic and inorganic sublattices, crucial for tailoring the optoelectronic properties of two-dimensional halide perovskites.

Structural and photophysical properties of two-dimensional lead bromide hybrid perovskite (C8H17NH3)2PbBr4

The structural versatility of organic compounds imparts manifold properties to hybrid organic−inorganic perovskites, where two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites are potential future platforms for light-emitting devices because of their unique quantum well configuration and dielectric confinement. Notwithstanding the numerous studies on the organic−inorganic perovskites carried out to date, precisely charactering the structure and photoluminescence mechanism remain considerable challenges. Herein, by applying Rietveld refinement, we have obtained crystal structure and atomic sites of 2D layered OA2PbBr4 perovskite, which undergoes a phase transition at 190 K with activation energies of 29.6 and 3.8 meV for the two phases, respectively. The theoretical analysis based on the crystal structure were performed to understand the nature of vibrations and band structure. Steady-state PL shows a narrow emission and a broad emission located at 409 and 487 nm, respectively. With temperature cooling down to 118 K, narrow emission gradually narrowed and enhanced. Meanwhile, intensity of broad emission first weakens and then increases. The turning point occurs near 198 K. By applying time-resolved PL (TRPL) and transient absorption (TA) spectra experiment, we observed a rapid carrier transfer from the FE to the STE state, and demonstrated the narrow and broad bands originate from free exciton and self-trapped exciton emission, respectively. And the self-trapping depth is proved to be 26.3 meV by low-temperature PL. Our findings indicate the synthesized 2D perovskite has potential applications in optoelectronic and display devices.

Magneto-chiral Nonlinear Optical Effect with Large Anisotropic Response in Two-Dimensional Halide Perovskite.

The chiral organic-inorganic halide perovskites (OIHPs) are vital candidates for superior nonlinear optical (NLO) effects associated with circularly polarized (CP) light. NLO in chiral materials often couples with magnetic dipole (MD) transition, as well as the conventional electric dipole (ED) transition. However, the importance of MD transition in NLO process of chiral OIHPs has not yet been well recognized. Here, the circular polarized probe analysis of second harmonic generation circular dichroism (SHG-CD) provides the direct evidence that the contribution of MD leads to a large anisotropic response to CP lights in chiral OIHPs, (R-/S-MBACl)2PbI4. The thin films exhibit great sensitivity to CP lights over a wide wavelength range, and the g-value reaches up to 1.57 at the wavelength where the contribution of MD is maximized. Furthermore, it is also effective as CP light generator, outputting CP-SHG with maximum g-factor of 1.76 upon the stimulation of linearly polarized light. This study deepens the understanding of relation between chirality and magneto-optical effect, and such an efficient discrimination and generation of CP light signal is highly applicable for chirality-based sensor and optical communication devices.

Exciton engineering of 2D Ruddlesden–Popper perovskites by synergistically tuning the intra and interlayer structures

Designing two-dimensional halide perovskites for high-performance optoelectronic applications requires deep understanding of the structure-property relationship that governs their excitonic behaviors. However, a design framework that considers both intra and interlayer structures modified by the A-site and spacer cations, respectively, has not been developed. Here, we use pressure to synergistically tune the intra and interlayer structures and uncover the structural modulations that result in improved optoelectronic performance. Under applied pressure, (BA)2(GA)Pb2I7 exhibits a 72-fold boost of photoluminescence and 10-fold increase of photoconductivity. Based on the observed structural change, we introduce a structural descriptor χ that describes both the intra and interlayer characteristics and establish a general quantitative relationship between χ and photoluminescence quantum yield: smaller χ correlates with minimized trapped excitons and more efficient emission from free excitons. Building on this principle, we design a perovskite (CMA)2(FA)Pb2I7 that exhibits a small χ and an impressive photoluminescence quantum yield of 59.3%.

Directed Assembly of Ordered Mixed-Spacer Quasi-2D Halide Perovskites through Homomeric Chains of Intermolecular Bonds.

Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites (HPs) are of significant interest to researchers because of their natural structural frameworks and intriguing optoelectronic properties. However, the direct fabrication of ordered mixed-spacer quasi-2D HPs remains challenging. Herein, a synthetic strategy inspired by the principle of supramolecular synthons is employed for the self-assembly of a series of ordered mixed-spacer bilayered HPs. The key innovation involves the introduction of intermolecular hydrogen bonds using a bifunctional 3-aminopropionitrile cation. Three homogeneous n = 2 structures are obtained, with a subtly ordered perovskite connected by two distinct types of organic cation layers, resulting in a recurrent ABAB' stacking sequence. These three compounds exhibit attractive semiconducting properties. Moderate bandgaps in the range of 2.70 to 2.76eV with an absorption wavelength range of 448-459nm exhibit excellent photoelectric response. Moreover, the ordered structures facilitate excellent polarization-sensitive photodetection, with an impressive on/off ratio of 103. The response speed ranged from 298 to 381 µs, and the out-of-plane polarization-related dichroism ratio is determined to be 1.19. Such ordered mixed-spacer bilayered perovskites have not been reported. These results enrich the HPs system and play a significant role in the direct assembly of novel perovskites with ordered structures.

Floquet Engineering of Excitons in Two-Dimensional Halide Perovskites via Biexciton States.

Layered two-dimensional halide perovskites (2DHPs) exhibit exciting non-equilibrium properties that allow the manipulation of energy levels through coherent light-matter interactions. Under the Floquet picture, novel quantum states manifest through the optical Stark effect (OSE) following intense subresonant photoexcitation. Nevertheless, a detailed understanding of the influence of strong many-body interactions between excitons on the OSE in 2DHPs remains unclear. Herein, we uncover the crucial role of biexcitons in photon-dressed states and demonstrate precise optical control of the excitonic states via the biexcitonic OSE in 2DHPs. With fine step tuning of the driven energy, we fully parametrize the evolution of exciton resonance modulation. The biexcitonic OSE enables Floquet engineering of the exciton resonance with either a blue-shift or a red-shift of the energy levels. Our findings shed new light on the intricate nature of coherent light-matter interactions in 2DHPs and extend the degree of freedom for ultrafast coherent optical control over excitonic states.

Solvent-Templated Methylammonium-Based Ruddlesden-Popper Perovskites with Short Interlayer Distances.

Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites are exquisite semiconductors with great structural tunability. They can incorporate a rich variety of organic species that not only template their layered structures but also add new functionalities to their optoelectronic characteristics. Here, we present a series of new methylammonium (CH3NH3+ or MA)-based 2D Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites templated by dimethyl carbonate (CH3OCOOCH3 or DMC) solvent molecules. We report the synthesis, detailed structural analysis, and characterization of four new compounds: MA2(DMC)PbI4 (n = 1), MA3(DMC)Pb2I7 (n = 2), MA4(DMC)Pb3I10 (n = 3), and MA3(DMC)Pb2Br7 (n = 2). Notably, these compounds represent unique structures with MA as the sole organic cation both within and between the perovskite sheets, while DMC molecules occupy a tight space between the MA cations in the interlayer. They form hydrogen-bonded [MA···DMC···MA]2+ complexes that act as spacers, preventing the perovskite sheets from condensing into each other. We report one of the shortest interlayer distances (∼5.7-5.9 Å) in solvent-incorporated 2D halide perovskites. Furthermore, the synthesized crystals exhibit similar optical characteristics to other 2D perovskite systems, including narrow photoluminescence (PL) signals. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm their direct-band-gap nature. Meanwhile, the phase stability of these systems was found to correlate with the H-bond distances and their strengths, decreasing in the order MA3(DMC)Pb2I7 > MA4(DMC)Pb3I10 > MA2(DMC)PbI4 ∼ MA3(DMC)Pb2Br7. The relatively loosely bound nature of DMC molecules enables us to design a thermochromic cell that can withstand 25 cycles of switching between two colored states. This work exemplifies the unconventional role of the noncharged solvent molecule in templating the 2D perovskite structure.

Electron-Phonon Coupling-Mediated Ultralong Carrier Lifetime in an All-Inorganic Two-Dimensional Cs2PbI2Cl2 Perovskite: Explanation for the High Antisite Defect Tolerance.

Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskite are appealing candidates for applications in optoelectronics and photovoltaics, but their energy conversion efficiency is severely limited by nonradiative electron-hole recombination. In most investigations, point defects with deep defect levels and deep charge-state transition levels in the band gap are treated as the carrier recombination centers. For the all-inorganic 2D Css 2PbI2Cl2, the IPb antisite defect is the most likely to form and cause nonradiative electron-hole recombination. By using density functional theory and ab initio nonradiative molecular dynamics calculations, we found that the IPb defect can introduce the deep acceptor and donor levels into the band gap. Because electron-phonon coupling gives rise to weak nonadiabatic coupling and rapid loss of electronic coherence, those levels lead to a reduction of the carrier loss and the prolongation of the excited-state carrier lifetime, thereby enhancing the photoelectric and defect tolerance properties of the Cs2PbI2Cl2 material. These results could deepen the understanding of the chemistry of defects and carrier dynamics in perovskite materials.

Characterization of Cl-doped two-dimensional (PEA)2PbBr4 perovskite single crystals for fast neutron and gamma ray detection.

In this paper, a high-quality Cl-doped two-dimensional halide perovskite (PEA)2Pb(Br0.95Cl0.05)4 crystal was prepared using a seed-induced volatile solvent method. On optimizing the Cl- doping concentration, we found that 5% Cl-doping results in (PEA)2PbBr4 with the highest optical and photon yield. Based on the Cl-doped (PEA)2PbBr4 single crystal, the response characterization of the (PEA)2Pb(Br0.95Cl0.05)4 crystal in the mixed field of neutrons and gamma rays (n/γ) has been verified. Using the time-of-flight method and the linear relationship between integral charge and neutron yield, it was proved that (PEA)2Pb(Br0.95Cl0.05)4 crystal can be used for n/γ screening. The time difference between the fast neutron released by a single nuclear reaction and the γ photon arriving at the detector was 130 ns, and the arrival time of the γ photon is earlier than that of the fast neutron. This work has a broad application prospect in the study of nuclear reaction kinetics, the monitoring of the neutron yield of fusion devices and the total energy released by nuclear reactions.

Dielectric Screening and Charge-Transfer in 2D Lead-Halide Perovskites for Reduced Exciton Binding Energies.

Layered lead-halide perovskites have shown tremendous success as an active material for optoelectronics. This is attributed to the electronic structure of the inorganic sublattice and large exciton binding energies due to quantum and dielectric confinement. Expanding functionalities for applications that depend on free-carrier generation requires new material design routes to decrease the binding energy. Here we use electronic structure methods with model Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) to examine the contributions of the dielectric screening and charge-transfer excited-states to the exciton binding energy of phenylethylammonium (PEA2PbBr4) and naphthlethylammonium (NEA2PbBr4) lead-bromide perovskites. Our model BSE calculations show that NEA introduces hole acceptor states which impose charge-transfer character on the exciton along with larger dielectric screening. This substantially decreases the exciton binding compared to PEA. This result suggests the use of organic cations with high dielectric screening and hole acceptor states as a viable strategy for reducing exciton binding energies in two-dimensional halide perovskites.

Occurrence of robust memristive behavior for low-power transient resistive switching and photo-responsive neuromorphic computing in low-dimensional perovskite

Recent progress on the memristive devices owing to the multi-functional approach have surged the exploration of new functional materials. Here, we have incorporated two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskite in memristive device. The Pb-free Cs3Bi2I9 perovskite active layer was fabricated to obtain the ITO/Cs3Bi2I9/Pt structure. The device shows typical bipolar resistance switching behavior with Off state resistance in TΩ scale. Due to the higher work function of the top Pt electrode, the barrier height at the Pt/Cs3Bi2I9 junction is higher and the observed device conductance is low in the Off state. Enhanced memory parameters such as endurance (>103 cycles) and retention (104 s) for multiple conductance states is observed. In the pulse modulated synaptic characterization, the device emulated essential post-synaptic plasticity, short-term and long-term potentiation with power consumption in femto Joule. The classical conditioning learning was mimicked by the device by electric and optical stimulation procuring basic associative training. The non-toxicity of the perovskite material has been successfully utilized for the transient memristor application. The robust in-memory photonic memristive property of the device along with water stimulated transient behavior demonstrates the significance of the proposed device in multi-dimensional field of electronic device.

Quantum confinement effect on the electronic and optical properties of two-dimensional halide perovskites

Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites have garnered significant attention due to their inherent stability, excellent optoelectronic properties, and versatile structural diversity, making them promising for solar cell applications. Here, by using the first-principles calculation based on density functional theory, the structural and optoelectronic properties of 2D halide perovskites are investigated. Results reveal a clear relationship in structural and optoelectronic properties. The band gaps of 2D halide perovskites decrease with the sheet of inorganic (or organic) layers increasing (or decreasing). Calculated charge density at the band edges and averaged electrostatic potential explain this structure-properties relationship comes from quantum confinement effect induced by the unique quantum-well-like structure. This theoretical work provides comprehensive understanding of the optoelectronic properties and a guideline for designing new 2D halide perovskite with desired optoelectronic properties.

Emerging Two-Dimensional Organic Semiconductor-Incorporated Perovskites─A Fascinating Family of Hybrid Electronic Materials.

Halide perovskites have attracted a great amount of attention owing to their unique materials chemistry, excellent electronic properties, and low-cost manufacturing. Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites, originating from three-dimensional (3D) perovskite structures, are structurally more diverse and therefore create functional possibilities beyond 3D perovskites. The much less restrictive size constraints on the organic component of these hybrid materials particularly provide an exciting platform for designing unprecedented materials and functionalities at the molecular level. In this Perspective, we discuss the concept and recent development of a sub-class of 2D perovskites, namely, organic semiconductor-incorporated perovskites (OSiPs). OSiPs combine the electronic functionality of organic semiconductors with the soft and dynamic halide perovskite lattice, offering opportunities for tailoring the energy landscape, lattice and carrier dynamics, and electron/ion transport properties for various fundamental studies, as well as device applications. Specifically, we summarize recent advances in the design, synthesis, and structural analysis of OSiPs with various organic conjugated moieties as well as the application of OSiPs in photovoltaics, light-emitting devices, and transistors. Lastly, challenges and further opportunities for OSiPs in molecular design, integration of novel functionality, film quality, and stability issues are addressed.

Spontaneous Polarization Induced Optical Responses in a Two-Dimensional Ferroelectric Halide Perovskite.

Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites exhibit unique structural and optical properties because large organic molecular cations distort the perovskite structure and the excitons confined in the 2D layers are stable. Here, we report the temperature dependences of the absorption spectra, second harmonic generation (SHG) intensity, and lattice constants of 2D perovskite (BA)2(EA)2Pb3I10 single crystals, where BA is n-butylammonium and EA is ethylammonium. We found that the Urbach tail of the absorption spectrum significantly changes at around 200 K and that the change is correlated with the SHG intensity and the in-plane lattice distortion. We concluded that a random distribution of spontaneous polarizations in the ferroelectric phase modifies the linewidth of the band-edge exciton transition and is the cause of the anomalous temperature dependence of the steepness parameter of the Urbach tail.
