Two-dimensional cellular automaton model of traffic flow with open boundaries.

A two-dimensional cellular automaton model of traffic flow with open boundaries are investigated by computer simulations. The outflow of cars from the system and the average velocity are investigated. The time sequences of the outflow and average velocity have flicker noises in a jamming phase. Flow of Cars Crossing with Unequal Velocities in a Two-Dimensional Cellular Automaton Model

Simulation has been performed for traffic flow in two-dimensional cellular automaton models including cars with unequal velocities: the northbound cars with a normal speed and the eastbound cars with a high speed. For the eastbound high speed cars, two models are considered. In the model I, the intrinsic velocity is defined for all eastbound cars. In the model II, the maximum velocity, acceleration and deceleration of the cars are taken into account. It has turned out that two new phases appear between the free-moving phase and the global jamming phase in both models. One is the one-sided blocking phase where the northbound cars block the high speed eastbound cars. Another is the mutual blocking phase where the cars on both roads are mutually blocked. The mean velocity of the cars and the size of the local jam are obtained.

A cellular-automaton model for cooperative effects in matter-radiation interaction: the semiconductor laser

A two-dimensional cellular-automaton (CA) model is proposed for a semiconductor laser system, showing qualitative behaviour in agreement with actual performances.The relevance of this approach to the description of the switching on of catastrophic optical damage in the active material and the subsequent dynamics is discussed. Promising aspects are underlined such as the possibility of describing complex-geometry cavities or laser cavities that are changing in time.

Effect of Reduced Randomness on Jam in a Two-Dimensional Traffic Model

Traffic flow is simulated in a two-dimensional cellular automaton model with an additional regularity on the initial placement of cars: the equal number of cars in rows and columns of the square lattice. Among the ultimate traffic states, the commensurate velocity states are found, where the mean velocity is constant. Reduction of the randomness shifts the critical density for the traffic jam to the higher densities.

A cellular automaton model of steady-state columnar-dendritic growth in binary alloys

A two-dimensional cellular automaton model has been developed to examine the evolution and coarsening behaviour of solid-solution dendrites during steady-state columnar freezing. Using an empirical rule to account for interface growth, realistic dendrite geometries were obtained for different assumed compositions and process conditions. Coarsening occurred by a coalescence mechanism associated with bridging of adjacent dendrite arms.

The jam phases in a two-dimensional cellular automata model of traffic flow are investigated by computer simulations. Two different types of the jam phases are found. The spatially diagonal long-range correlation obeys the power law at the low-density jam configurations. The diagonal correlation exponentially decays at the high-density jam. The exponent of the short-range correlation in the diagonal direction is introduced to define the transition between these two phases. We also discuss the stability of the jams.
