Diabatic Hamiltonian matrix elements made simple

With a view to applying the Generator Coordinate Method to large configuration spaces, we propose a simple approximate formula to compute diabatic many-body matrix elements without having to evaluate two-body interaction matrix elements. The method is illustrated with two analytically solvable Hamiltonians based on the harmonic oscillator.

Finite-temperature linear response theory based on relativistic Hartree Bogoliubov model with point-coupling interaction

The finite-temperature linear response theory based on the finite-temperature relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (FT-RHB) model is developed in the charge-exchange channel to study the temperature evolution of spin-isospin excitations. Calculations are performed self-consistently with relativistic point-coupling interactions DD-PC1 and DD-PCX. In the charge-exchange channel, the pairing interaction can be split into isovector ($T = 1$) and isoscalar ($T = 0$) parts. For the isovector component, the same separable form of the Gogny D1S pairing interaction is used both for the ground-state calculation as well as for the residual interaction, while the strength of the isoscalar pairing in the residual interaction is determined by comparison with experimental data on Gamow-Teller resonance (GTR) and Isobaric analog resonance (IAR) centroid energy differences in even-even tin isotopes. The temperature effects are introduced by treating Bogoliubov quasiparticles within a grand-canonical ensemble. Thus, unlike the conventional formulation of the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) based on the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) basis, our model is formulated within the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) quasiparticle basis. Implementing a relativistic point-coupling interaction and a separable pairing force allows for the reduction of complicated two-body residual interaction matrix elements, which considerably decreases the dimension of the problem in the coordinate space. The main advantage of this method is to avoid the diagonalization of a large QRPA matrix, especially at finite temperature where the size of configuration space is significantly increased. The implementation of the linear response code is used to study the temperature evolution of IAR, GTR, and spin-dipole resonance (SDR) in even-even tin isotopes in the temperature range $T = 0 - 1.5$ MeV.

Engineering quantum Hall phases in a synthetic bilayer graphene system

Synthetic quantum Hall bilayer (SQHB), realized by optically driven monolayer graphene in the quantum Hall regime, provides a flexible platform for engineering quantum Hall phases as discussed in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 247403]. The coherent driving which couples two Landau levels mimicks an effective tunneling between synthetic layers. The tunneling strength, the effective Zeeman coupling, and two-body interaction matrix elements are tunable by varying the driving frequency and the driving strength. Using infinite density matrix renormalization group (iDMRG) techniques combined with exact diagonalization (ED), we show that the system exhibits a non-abelian bilayer Fibonacci phase at filling fraction $\nu = 2/3$. Moreover, at integer filling $\nu = 1$, the SQHB exhibits quantum Hall ferromagnetism. Using Hartree-Fock theory and exact diagonalization, we show that excitations of the quantum Hall ferromagnet are topological textures known as skyrmions.

Nuclear shell model and level density

The accurate knowledge of the nuclear level density is crucial for understanding the nuclear structure and for numerous applications including astrophysical reactions. In this review paper, we discuss the shell-model description of the nuclear level density, the use of the statistical moments method and underlying physics. The level density found with the moments method is shown to agree with the results of the exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian matrix. The statistical approach is also compared to other standard methods for deriving level densities. The role of specific interaction matrix elements is reviewed in connection to the behavior of the level densities as these evolve. Chaotization and thermalization processes, collective enhancement and phase transitions are discussed with changing strengths of specific groups of two-body interaction matrix elements. The popular phenomenological constant temperature model is compared to the moments method and the effective temperature parameter of the model for different isotopes is discussed.

Gogny-force-derived effective shell-model Hamiltonian

The density-dependent finite-range Gogny force has been used to derive the effective Hamiltonian for the shell-model calculations of nuclei. The density dependence simulates an equivalent three-body force, while the finite range gives a Gaussian distribution of the interaction in the momentum space and hence leads to an automatic smooth decoupling between low-momentum and high-momentum components of the interaction, which is important for finite-space shell-model calculations. Two-body interaction matrix elements, single-particle energies and the core energy of the shell model can be determined by the unified Gogny force. The analytical form of the Gogny force is advantageous to treat cross-shell cases, while it is difficult to determine the cross-shell matrix elements and single-particle energies using an empirical Hamiltonian by fitting experimental data with a large number of matrix elements. In this paper, we have applied the Gogny-force effective shell-model Hamiltonian to the ${\it p}$- and ${\it sd}$-shell nuclei. The results show good agreements with experimental data and other calculations using empirical Hamiltonians. The experimentally-known neutron drip line of oxygen isotopes and the ground states of typical nuclei $^{10}$B and $^{18}$N can be reproduced, in which the role of three-body force is non-negligible. The Gogny-force derived effective Hamiltonian has also been applied to the cross-shell calculations of the ${\it sd}$-${\it pf}$ shell.

Sum rules forspin−1/2quantum gases in states with well-defined spins. II. Spin-dependent two-body interactions

Sums of matrix elements of spin-dependent two-body momentum-independent interactions and sums of their products are calculated analytically in the basis of many-body states with given total spin --- the states built from spin and spatial wavefunctions belonging to multidimensional irreducible representations of the symmetric group, unless the total spin has the maximal allowed value. As in the first part of the series [V. A. Yurovsky, Phys. Rev. A 91, 053601 (2015)], the sum dependence on the many-body states is given by universal factors, which are independent of the Hamiltonians of non-interacting particles. The sum rules are applied to perturbative analysis of energy spectra and to calculation of two-body spin-dependent local correlations.

Recursive method for computing matrix elements for two-body interactions

A recursive method for the efficient computation of two-body matrix elements is presented. The method consists of a set of recursion relations for the computationally demanding radial integral and adds one more tool to the set of computational methods introduced by Horie and Sasaki [H. Horie and K. Sasaki, Prog. Theor. Phys. 25, 475 (1961)]. The neutrinoless double-$\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay will serve as the primary application and example, but the method is general and can be applied equally well to other kinds of nuclear structure calculations involving matrix elements of two-body interactions.

Simple regularization scheme for multireference density functional theories

Background: Extensions of single-reference (SR) energy-density-functionals (EDFs) to multi-reference (MR) applications involve using the generalized Wick theorem (GWT), which leads to singular energy kernels that cannot be properly integrated to restore symmetries, unless the EDFs are generated by true interactions. Purpose: We propose a new method to regularize the MR EDFs, which is based on using auxiliary quantities obtained by multiplying the kernels with appropriate powers of overlaps. Methods: Regularized matrix elements of two-body interactions are obtained by integrating the auxiliary quantities and then solving simple linear equations. Results: We implement the new regularization method within the self-consistent Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approach and we perform a proof-of-principle angular-momentum projection (AMP) of states in odd-odd nucleus 26Al. We show that for EDFs generated by true interactions, our regularization method gives results identical to those obtained within the standard AMP procedure. We also show that for EDFs that do not correspond to true interactions, it gives stable and converging results that are different than unstable and non-converging standard AMP values. Conclusions: The new regularization method proposed in this work may provide us with a relatively inexpensive and efficient tool to generalize SR EDFs to MR applications, thus allowing for symmetry restoration and configuration mixing performed for typical nuclear EDFs, which most often do not correspond to true interactions.

Low-Lying S-States of Two-Electron Systems

The energies of the low-lying bound S-states of some two-electron systems (treating them as three-body systems) like negatively charged hydrogen, neutral helium, positively charged-lithium, beryllium, carbon, oxygen, neon, argon and negatively charged muonium and exotic positronium ions have been calculated employing hyperspherical harmonics expansion method. The matrix elements of two-body interactions involve Raynal–Revai coefficients which are particularly essential for the numerical solution of three-body Schrődinger equation when the two-body potentials are other from Coulomb or harmonic. The technique has been applied for to two-electron ions 1H− (Z = 1) to 40Ar16+ (Z = 18), negatively charged-muonium Mu− and exotic positronium ion Ps−(e+e−e−) considering purely Coulomb interaction. The available computer facility restricted reliable calculations up to 28 partial waves (i.e. Km = 28) and energies for higher Km have been obtained by applying an extrapolation scheme suggested by Schneider.

Symmetries in theg9/2shell

We consider symmetries which arise when two-body interaction matrix elements with isopin T=0 are set equal to a constant in a single-j -shell calculation. The nucleus ^{96} Cd is used as an example.

Scrambling of Hartree-Fock levels as a universal Brownian-motion process

We study scrambling of the Hartree-Fock single-particle levels and wave functions as electrons are added to an almost-isolated diffusive or chaotic quantum dot with electron-electron interactions. We use the generic framework of the induced two-body ensembles, where the randomness of the two-body interaction matrix elements is induced by the randomness of the eigenfunctions of the chaotic or diffusive single-particle Hamiltonian. After an appropriate scaling of the number of added electrons, the scrambling behaviors of both the Hartree-Fock levels and wave functions are each described by a universal function. These functions can be derived from a parametric random-matrix process of the Brownian-motion type. An exception to this universality occurs when an empty level gets filled, in which case scrambling is delayed by one electron. An explanation of these results is given in terms of a generalized Koopmans' approach.

Unfolding the effects of theT=0andT=1parts of the two-body interaction on nuclear collectivity in thef-pshell

Calculations of the spectra of various even-even nuclei in the fp shell ({44}Ti, {46}Ti, {48}Ti, {48}Cr and {50}Cr) are performed with two sets of two-body interaction matrix elements. The first set consists of the matrix elements of the FPD6 interaction. The second set has the same T=1 two-body matrix elements as the FPD6 interaction, but all the T=0 two-body matrix elements are set equal to zero (T0FPD6). Surprisingly, the T0FPD6 interaction gives a semi-reasonable spectrum (or else this method would make no sense). A consistent feature for even-even nuclei, e.g. {44,46,48}Ti and {48,50}Cr, is that the reintroduction of T=0 matrix elements makes the spectrum look more rotational than when the T=0 matrix elements are set equal to zero. A common characteristic of the results is that, for high spin states, the excitation energies are too high for the full FPD6 interaction and too low for T0FPD6, as compared with experiment. The odd-even nucleus {43}Ti and the odd-odd nucleus {46}V are also discussed. For {43}Sc the T=0 matrix elements are responsible for staggering of the high spin states. In general, but not always, the inclusion of T=0 two-body matrix elements enhances the B(E2) rates.

Disordered mesoscopic systems with interactions: Induced two-body ensembles and the Hartree-Fock approach

We introduce a generic approach to study interaction effects in diffusive or chaotic quantum dots in the Coulomb blockade regime. The randomness of the single-particle wave functions induces randomness in the two-body interaction matrix elements. We classify the possible induced two-body ensembles, both in the presence and absence of spin degrees of freedom. The ensembles depend on the underlying space-time symmetries as well as on features of the two-body interaction. Confining ourselves to spinless electrons, we then use the Hartree-Fock (HF) approximation to calculate HF single-particle energies and HF wave functions for many realizations of the ensemble. We study the statistical properties of the resulting one-body HF ensemble for a fixed number of electrons. In particular, we determine the statistics of the interaction matrix elements in the HF basis, of the HF single-particle energies (including the HF gap between the last occupied and the first empty HF level), and of the HF single-particle wave functions. We also study the addition of electrons, and in particular the distribution of the distance between successive conductance peaks and of the conductance peak heights.

Nuclear muon capture as a powerful probe of double-beta decays in light nuclei

Ordinary muon-capture (OMC) transitions to the intermediate 1+ states in the two-neutrino double-beta (2νββ) decays of 36Ar, 46Ca, 48Ca and 50Cr have been studied in the framework of the nuclear shell model to probe the structure of these states. Well-established, fitted two-body interaction matrix elements have been used in the study. A significant dependence of these two nuclear processes on the structure of few low-lying intermediate states is found for the A = 36, A = 46 and A = 48 cases. This makes the OMC as a powerful probe of the bulk of the 2νββ nuclear matrix elements for the decays of 36Ar, 46Ca and 48Ca.

Wave function structure in two-body random matrix ensembles

We study the structure of eigenstates in two-body interaction random matrix ensembles and find significant deviations from random matrix theory expectations. The deviations are most prominent in the tails of the spectral density and indicate localization of the eigenstates in Fock space. Using ideas related to scar theory we derive an analytical formula that relates fluctuations in wave function intensities to fluctuations of the two-body interaction matrix elements. Numerical results for many-body fermion systems agree well with the theoretical predictions.

Study of Effective Interaction from Single Particle Transfer Reactions with f-p Shell Nuclei

The present study concentrates on the average effective two-body interaction matrix elements being extracted, using sum-rule techniques, from transfer reactions on target states having single orbital as well as two orbitaloccupancy. This investigation deals with transfer reactions on f-p shell nuclei involving (i) $1f_{7/2}$ and $2p_{3/2}$ transfer on target states using $^{40}$Ca as inert core, and (ii) $2p_{3/2}$ and$1f_{5/2}$ transfer on states using $^{56}$Ni as core.

Effective Two-Body Interactions in the s-d Shell Nuclei Using Sum Rule Equations in Transfer Reactions

Average effective two-body interaction matrix elements in the s-d shell have been extracted, from data on experimentally measured isospin centroids, by combining the recently derived new sum rules equations for pick-up reactions with similar known equations for stripping reactions performed on general multishell target states. Using this combination of stripping and pick-up equations, the average effective matrix elements for the shells, 1d^2_5/2, 2s^2_1/2 and 1d^2_3/2 respectively have been obtained. A new feature of the present work is that the restriction imposed in earlier works on target states, that it be populated only by active neutrons has now been abandoned.

Equations of collective motion coupled to a collision integral for the single-particle occupation probabilities are derived from the randomness of the two-body interaction matrix elements and from an additional time smoothing procedure. For a linear approximation to the time-dependence of the single-particle energies the collision term conserves energy all by itself, i.e. the time-smoothed time derivative of the correlation energy vanishes.

Shell-model relationships between negative-parity states of even-massA=30?40 nuclei

Simple relationships between the negative-parityenergy level structures of the even-mass nuclei pairsA=30 and 32, 34 and 40, 34 and 36, 34 and 38, 40 and 38 are established along lines similar to the well-known Pandya transformation between the particle-hole spectrum of40K and the particle-particle spectrum of38Cl. The relationships are generated within the framework of thejj-coupling shell model, using standard Racah algebra, and no assumption is made about the physical nature of the nuclear two-body interaction. Candidates for the 1f7/2 and 2p3/2 multiplets are selected on the basis of their measured spectroscopic strengths inl=3 or 1 single-particle transfer reactions with due allowance for member fragmentation and mixing between the two configurations in terms of the calculation of spectroscopic-strength weighted centroids. The calculated correlated energy spectra are discussed with reference to the results of previous interaction-dependent shell-model calculations, especially those employing the modified surface delta interaction. Consideration is also given to uncertain or ambiguous spin and parity assignments, deduced two-body interaction matrix elements, and the isospinT=0 and 1 and single-particle 1f7/2 and 2p3/2 splittings.
