Micro/nanogroove-structured graphene-oxide-doped indium gallium yttrium oxide alignment layer with improved electrical characteristics

Graphene oxide (GO)-doped indium gallium yttrium oxide (InGaYO) alignment layers formed by a brush-based solution-coating process are reported in this study. The doping concentrations were adjusted to 0, 5, and 15 wt%. The alignment layers obtained thus showed anisotropic micro/nanogroove structures having induced by shear stress originating from the brush-hair movements. This structure enabled uniform and homogeneous liquid crystal (LC) alignment on the film surface with geometric constraints. The alignment state was verified by polarized optical microscopy and pretilt angle analysis. The GO-doped InGaYO alignment layer demonstrated enhanced 1.92 × 10−4 Jm−2 polar anchoring energy of the LCs and reduced hysteresis property, which aid in lower image-sticking effects. The LC device operation was verified with 1.7 V in a twisted-nematic LC system along with stable optical transmittance control. From these results, GO doping of the metal-oxide alignment layer shows the potential for functional LC device applications.

Modeling and optimization strategies for dye-doped super twisted nematic liquid crystal light valves

This study provides a comprehensive investigation of dye-doped super twisted nematic liquid crystal (DDSTNLC) with the aim of uncovering its potential applications. Using design of experiments (DoE) techniques, we elucidated the relationships between physical variables and constructed a transmission model. We then used Monte Carlo simulations to demonstrate the potential applications of DDSTNLC in various optical performances, including high light transmittance and contrast ratio. The investigation combining the modeling and DoE paves the way for advancing progress in the development of DDSTNLC-based light valves.

Quantum optical control experiment using Mach–Zehnder interferometer and twisted nematic liquid crystals

A Mach–Zehnder interferometer with an optical phase control by a twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal (LC) device was studied. In a typical TN LC device, a change in the optical rotation state of π/2 can be obtained by applying a voltage of about 5 V with a cell thickness of several-micron. The TN cell is inserted into one optical path in the Mach–Zehnder interferometer. We obtained a pattern change when voltage was applied to the LC cell due to the change of the optical interference state. As a result, a change in the number of photons under weak light conditions is observed.

Dual-Channel Switchable Metasurface Filters for Compact Spectral Imaging with Deep Compressive Reconstruction.

Spectral imaging technology, which aims to capture images across multiple spectral channels and create a spectral data cube, has been widely utilized in various fields. However, conventional spectral imaging systems face challenges, such as slow acquisition speed and large size. The rapid development of optical metasurfaces, capable of manipulating light fields versatilely and miniaturizing optical components into ultrathin planar devices, offers a promising solution for compact hyperspectral imaging (HSI). This study proposes a compact snapshot compressive spectral imaging (SCSI) system by leveraging the spectral modulations of metasurfaces with dual-channel switchable metasurface filters and employing a deep-learning-based reconstruction algorithm. To achieve compactness, the proposed system integrates dual-channel switchable metasurface filters using twisted nematic liquid crystals (TNLCs) and anisotropic titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanostructures. These thin metasurface filters are closely attached to the image sensor, resulting in a compact system. The TNLCs possess a broadband linear polarization conversion ability, enabling the rapid switching of the incidence polarization state between x-polarization and y-polarization by applying different voltages. This polarization conversion facilitates the generation of two groups of transmittance spectra for wavelength-encoding, providing richer information for spectral data cube reconstruction compared to that of other snapshot compressive spectral imaging techniques. In addition, instead of employing classic iterative compressive sensing (CS) algorithms, an end-to-end residual neural network (ResNet) is utilized to reconstruct the spectral data cube. This neural network leverages the 2-frame snapshot measurements of orthogonal polarization channels. The proposed hyperspectral imaging technology demonstrates superior reconstruction quality and speed compared to those of the traditional compressive hyperspectral image recovery methods. As a result, it is expected that this technology will have substantial implications in various domains, including but not limited to object detection, face recognition, food safety, biomedical imaging, agriculture surveillance, and so on.

Technological process optimization and measurement of image quality of the electrically bifocal metalens.

This Letter describes the design procedure and process optimization of the electrically bifocal metalens. In our design, horizontal and vertical polarization is manipulated by applying a suitable voltage to a twisted nematic liquid crystal (TN-LC) cell. Each nanostructure is designed to be a rectangular prism, making different polarizations of light experience various phase delays, thus causing bi-focus. We selected lithographical methods to fabricate our metalens because of the minimum physical size, which can be as small as 50 nm, and the maximum aspect ratio, which is as high as 15. Furthermore, to increase the tolerance and make the sidewall vertical and smooth, we coated different characteristics of photoresist sensitivity to the upper and lower layers. After the development, the mushroom-type photoresist makes Ni easier to strip while in the lift-off process, thus increasing the quality of the whole metalens. Our experiment shows that the focal lengths and focusing efficiencies corresponding to the two polarizations are similar to the simulation results. The proposed electrically modulated bifocal metalens can be utilized in different applications and combined with other optical components.

Ultra-broadband holography in visible and infrared regions with full-polarization nondispersive response.

Holography is promising to fully record and reconstruct the fundamental properties of light, while the limitations of working bandwidth, allowed polarization states, and dispersive response impede further advances in the integration level and functionality. Here, we propose an ultra-broadband holography based on twisted nematic liquid crystals (TNLCs), which can efficiently work in both the visible and infrared regions with a working spectrum of over 1000 nm. The underlying physics is that the electric field vector of light through TNLCs can be parallelly manipulated in the broad spectral range, thus enabling to build the ultra-broadband TNLC hologram by dynamic photopatterning. Furthermore, by introducing a simple nematic liquid crystal (NLC) element, the cascaded device allows for an excellent nondispersive polarization-maintaining performance that can adapt to full-polarization incidence. We expect our proposed methodology of holography may inspire new avenues for usages in polarization imaging, augmented/virtual reality display, and optical encryption.

Electrically switchable multicolored filter using plasmonic nanograting integrated with liquid crystal for optical storage and encryption.

This study proposed the synergistic merging of twisted-nematic liquid crystals (LCs) and nanograting embedded etalon structures for plasmonic structure color generation, realizing dynamic multifunctional metadevices. Metallic nanogratings and dielectric cavities were designed to provide color selectivity at visible wavelengths. Meanwhile, the polarization for the transmission of light could be actively manipulated by electrically modulating these integrated LCs. Moreover, manufacturing independent metadevices as single storage units with electrically controlled programmability and addressability facilitated secure information encoding and secretive transfer by dynamic high-contrast images. The approaches will pave the way for the development of customized optical storage devices and information encryption.

Electrically controllable liquid crystal paraxial Fresnel zone plate based on concentric zones patterned electrode

A twist nematic liquid crystal Fresnel zone plate (LCFZP) with controllable diffraction efficiency based on concentric zones patterned electrode is demonstrated. The alternating “transparent” and “opaque” state occurs when the LCFZP placed between two crossed polarizers. When the electric field was applied to the odd (even) zones, the odd (even) zones were dark, and the even (odd) zones were bright. The diffraction efficiency was varied with changing the voltage or by rotating the incident polarization direction. The maximum diffraction efficiency can reach 37.8% which is close to the theoretical limit of 40.5%, and the response time is reasonably fast. The proposed LCFZP with the advantages of easy fabrication, compact structures, low power consumption, and good stability, which has potential applications in many modern optical devices.

Tunable Polarization-Multiplexed Achromatic Dielectric Metalens.

Tunable metasurfaces provide a compact and efficient strategy for optical active wavefront shaping. Varifocal metalens is one of the most important applications. However, the existing tunable metalens rarely serves broadband wavelengths restricting their applications in broadband imaging and color display due to chromatic aberration. Herein, an electrically tunable polarization-multiplexed achromatic metalens integrated with twisted nematic liquid crystals (TNLCs) in the visible region is demonstrated. The phase profiles at different wavelengths under two orthogonal polarization channels are customized by the particle swarm optimization algorithm and matched with the dielectric metaunits database to achieve polarization-multiplexed achromatic performance. By combining the broadband linear polarization conversion ability of TNLC, the tunability of varifocal achromatic metalens is realized by applying different voltages. Further, the electrically tunable customized dispersion-manipulated metalens and switchable color metaholograms are demonstrated. The proposed devices will accelerate the application of metasurfaces in broadband zoom imaging, AR/VR displays and spectral detection.

Electrically tunable dual-layer twisted nematic liquid crystal THz phase shifters with intermediate composite polymer thin film

We demonstrate electrically tunable twisted nematic (TN) aligned liquid crystal (LC) terahertz phase shifters with a novel structure, in which a single LC composite polymer thin film is inserted in the middle of the LC cell. For designing such types of phase shifters, we have applied the Mauguin formalism used in LC-based switches for applications in the visible. Experimental results are in good agreement with those predicted by the theoretical model. Using this design, the phase shift has been increased by 14.3° at 1.2 THz in comparison to the conventional design (98.1°). The threshold voltage has been lowered from 0.81 VRMS to 0.48 VRMS while the driving voltage for quarter-wave (π/2) phase shift operation has been reduced from 8.4 VRMS to 6.3 VRMS at 1.2 THz. The dynamic response of devices also enhances significantly. Such design has also successfully been adopted to demonstrate a 2π phase shifter with similar improvement. Full-wave operation is achieved at a bias of 25 VRMS at 1.2 THz using a highly birefringent LC material. Order parameter calculations show that the polymer film improves significantly LC molecular alignment in the thick LC cell for THz applications. We have also compared the figure of merits (FOMs) of the present devices with previously reported THz π/2 and 2π phase shifters.

Electro-Optical Characteristics of Solution-Derived Zinc Oxide Film According to Number of Rubbing Iterations for Liquid Crystal Alignment

Zinc oxide (ZnO) films reportedly exhibit a rubbing effect for liquid crystal (LC) alignment. In this study, we investigated the LC alignment characteristics of solution-derived ZnO films according to the number of rubbing iterations. Uniform and homogeneous LC alignments were achieved on the rubbed ZnO films, regardless of the number of rubbing iterations. As the number of rubbing iterations increased, the surface energies of the rubbed ZnO films were similar to 42.20 mJ/m2, but the polar energy increased from 4.288 mJ/m2 to 6.470 mJ/m2. Additionally, the electro-optical characteristics of the twisted-nematic (TN) LC cells fabricated by rubbed ZnO films showed the best performance when the number of rubbing iterations was at five. By confirming that the ZnO film with improved physical, chemical, and electro-optical characteristics compared to the polyimide film achieved a perfect LC alignment through the conventional rubbing process, it indicates that the ZnO film can be an excellent substitute for the LC alignment film. In addition, it is expected that it can be applied to an LC-based virtual reality (VR)/augmented reality (AR) display system that requires a very fast response time through the excellent EO characteristics of the TN LC cell of the solution-derived ZnO film through the rubbing process.

Design of a three-phase amplitude macro-pixel full-color complex spatial light modulator with an in-cell geometric phase retardation layer.

Complex spatial light modulation, which can simultaneously control the amplitude and phase of light, is an essential optical technology for holographic display. We propose a twisted nematic liquid crystal (TNLC) mode with an in-cell type embedded geometric phase (GP) plate for full-color complex spatial light modulation. The proposed architecture provides an achromatic full-color complex light modulation capability in the far-field plane. The feasibility and working characteristics of the design are validated through numerical simulation.

Anisotropic Surface Formation Based on Brush-Coated Nickel-Doped Yttrium Oxide Film for Enhanced Electro-Optical Characteristics in Liquid Crystal Systems

This paper introduces anisotropic nickel yttrium oxide (NYO) film formed by the brush coating technique. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed well-formed NYO film after the curing process, and the morphology of the surface was investigated using atomic force microscopy. The shear stress driven from brush hair movements caused the nano/micro-grooved anisotropic surface structure of NYO. This anisotropic surface induced uniform liquid crystal (LC) alignment on the surface, which was confirmed by pre-tilt angle analysis and polarized optical microscopy. The contact angle measurements revealed an increase in hydrophilicity at higher temperature curing, which contributed to homogenous LC alignment. The NYO film achieved good optical transmittance and thermal stability as an LC alignment layer. In addition, the film demonstrated good electro-optical properties, stable switching, and significantly enhanced operating voltage performance in a twisted-nematic LC system. Therefore, we expect that this brush coating method can be applied to various inorganic materials to achieve an advanced LC alignment layer.

The Effect of Chemically Modified Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes on the Electro-Optical Properties of a Twisted Nematic Liquid Crystal Display Mode

In this study, we have chemically modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) with different side chains for better dispersion in liquid crystal solutions, and fabricated twisted nematic liquid crystal cells doped with such MWNT derivatives. The introduction of MWNT derivatives affects the alignment of LC molecules with or without external electric fields. Electro-optical property tests showed that the contrast ratio changed slightly with the sharp decrease in drive voltage, improving the drive ability of the twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD) mode.

Self-Aligned Liquid Crystals on Anisotropic Nano/Microstructured Lanthanum Yttrium Strontium Oxide Layer.

We propose an efficient alignment method for liquid crystals (LCs). A brush-coating method handles film deposition and LC alignment treatment simultaneously herein, meaning a reduction in the conventional alignment layer treatment process steps. A lanthanum yttrium strontium oxide (LaYSrO) film prepared by the sol–gel process was used for the alignment layer. Topographical details of the brush-coated LaYSrO films (compared with spin-coated films) were investigated by atomic force microscopy. Spin-coated LaYSrO meant that the film formation alone without orientation treatment represented an isotropic surface. On the other hand, the 270 °C-cured brush-coated LaYSrO showed nano/microstructure with directionality. It indicates that brush-hair sweeping induced shearing stress on the sol state of the LaYSrO, which results in surface anisotropy for LC alignment. The uniform LC alignment state was confirmed by polarized optical microscopy and pretilt analysis. The brush-coated LaYSrO shows fine optical transparency compared to plain and indium-tin-oxide coated glasses, and thermal stability up to 150 °C for LC alignment. Competitive electro-optical performances of the brush-coated LaYSrO were verified in a twisted-nematic LC system compared to those of the conventionally used polyimide layer. Consequently, we expect that the brush-coating process can be an innovative technology for LC alignment.

Achieving a wide color gamut based on polarization interference filters in a liquid crystal display.

We propose two polarization interference filters (PIF1 and PIF2) used in the backlight unit of a liquid crystal display (LCD) to achieve a wide color gamut. Both PIF1 and PIF2 consist of two polarizers and two 720° super twisted nematic liquid crystal polymer (LCP) layers, where two polarizers are crossed in PIF1, and two polarizers are parallel in PIF2. The PIFs can eliminate unwanted cyan and yellow parts in the output spectrum, which can improve the color gamut of LCD. In our calculation, when the PIF1 is employed in the LCD with normal color filter and QD-LED backlight, the color gamut increases from 107.3% NTSC to 124.6% NTSC, which is 13.7% NTSC larger than that of the LCD with high-performance color filter. When the PIF2 is employed in the LCD with normal color filter and QD-LED backlight, the color gamut of LCD with a normal color filter is improved by 6.8% NTSC larger than that of LCD with high-performance color film, and the transfer efficiency is close to that of the LCD with high-performance color film. We define the color gamut enhancement ratio (CGER) to compare the influence of PIFs and the high-performance color filter on the color gamut enhancement performance of LCD. Compared with the high-performance color filter, the two kinds of PIFs have a higher CGER. The PIFs have a great potential for achieving a wide color gamut.

Physics‐Aware Machine Learning and Adversarial Attack in Complex‐Valued Reconfigurable Diffractive All‐Optical Neural Network

AbstractDiffractive optical neural networks have shown promising advantages over electronic circuits for accelerating modern machine learning (ML) algorithms. However, it is challenging to achieve fully programmable all‐optical implementation and rapid hardware deployment. Here, a large‐scale, cost‐effective, complex‐valued, and reconfigurable diffractive all‐optical neural networks system in the visible range is demonstrated based on cascaded transmissive twisted nematic liquid crystal spatial light modulators. The employment of categorical reparameterization technique creates a physics‐aware training framework for the fast and accurate deployment of computer‐trained models onto optical hardware. Such a full stack of hardware and software enables not only the experimental demonstration of classifying handwritten digits in standard datasets, but also theoretical analysis and experimental verification of physics‐aware adversarial attacks onto the system, which are generated from a complex‐valued gradient‐based algorithm. The detailed adversarial robustness comparison with conventional multiple layer perceptrons and convolutional neural networks features a distinct statistical adversarial property in diffractive optical neural networks. The developed full stack of software and hardware provides new opportunities of employing diffractive optics in a variety of ML tasks and in the research on optical adversarial ML.

Tailoring ultra-broadband vector beams via programming the electric field vector of light.

With spatially inhomogeneous polarization, vector beam (VB) has created substantial opportunities in both optics and photonics. However, the limited spectral bandwidth of VB generator hinders further advances for higher level of integration and functionality. Here, an innovative approach of programming the electric field vector of light is proposed to tailor arbitrary ultra-broadband VBs, in parallel among an unprecedented wavelength range over 1000 nm covering the visible and NIR band. We demonstrate the twisted nematic liquid crystals (TNLCs), specifically arranged in-situ by a dynamic programmable photopatterning, enable to directly manipulate the electric field vector of transmitted light into the VB as desired. Furthermore, the electrical responsiveness of TNLCs yields a dynamic multifunctionality between the VB and Gaussian beam. We anticipate this ultra-broadband VB generator would be promising for a variety of applications like optical manipulation, super-resolution imaging, and integrated optical communication system.

Bidirectional Deep Learning of Polarization Transfer in Liquid Crystals with Application to Quantum State Preparation

Accurate control of light polarization represents a core building block in polarization metrology, imaging, and optical and quantum communications. Voltage-controlled liquid crystals offer an efficient way of polarization transformation. However, common twisted nematic liquid crystals are notorious for lacking an accurate theoretical model linking control voltages and output polarization. An inverse model, which would predict control voltages required to prepare a target polarization, is even more challenging. Here we report both the direct and inverse models based on deep neural networks, radial basis functions, and linear interpolation. We present an inverse-direct compound model solving the problem of control voltages ambiguity. We demonstrate one order of magnitude improvement in accuracy using deep learning compared to the radial basis function method and two orders of magnitude improvement compared to the linear interpolation. Errors of the deep neural network model also decrease faster than the other methods with an increasing number of training data. The best direct and inverse models reach the average infidelities of $4 \times 10^{-4}$ and $2 \times 10^{-4}$, respectively, which is the accuracy level not reported yet. Furthermore, we demonstrate local and remote preparation of an arbitrary single-photon polarization state using the deep learning models. The results will impact the application of twisted-nematic liquid crystals, increasing their control accuracy across the board. The presented bidirectional learning can be used for optimal classical control of complex photonic devices and quantum circuits beyond interpolation.

Tunable alignment of liquid crystals between anisotropic polyacrylamide thin layer

We report uniform liquid crystal (LC) alignment on a polyacrylamide (PAM) film via ion beam (IB) treatment. The IB incidence angle is adjusted from 15° to 75°. Physicochemical modifications caused by the IB process are investigated by atomic force microscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Low IB incidence results in biased and bumpy surfaces, whereas high IB incidence forms isotropic and smooth surfaces; both of these are unsuitable for uniform LC alignment. The 45° IB incidence induces anisotropic surface chemical reformations, and these modifications induce van der Waals forces between the LCs and modified PAM, thereby leading to uniform LC alignment. The LC alignment state is verified by polarized optical microscopy and pretilt angle. The electro-optical characteristic of the modified PAM showed excellent switching performance in twisted-nematic LC system. Thus, the IB-treated PAM film is a good candidate for LC alignment layers and suitable for LC device applications.
