In this paper, we characterize twinnings of buildings by 1-twinnings and one further condition concerning twin apartments. Specialized to the spherical case, we obtain new characterizations of the opposition relation in such buildings. We also give a new description of the standard twin building of type \(\widetilde{A}_{n-1}\).

On Opposition in Spherical Buildings and Twin Buildings

In this paper, we prove a combinatorial property of twin apartments and opposition of chambers in twin buildings. We then characterize adjacency of chambers in twin buildings by meansof opposition of chambers. As an application, we study maps which satisfy certain conditions related to opposition of chambers, e.g., maps that preserve opposition. Applied to the special case of spherical buildings, all our main results as well as their corollaries are new.

Locally split and locally finite twin buildings of 2-spherical type

Abstract We prove a fixed point theorem for twin buildings of arbitrary rank. This theorem is then used to construct certain twin buildings whose existence was conjectured in [12]. As a consequence we obtain a classification of twin buildings whose rank 2 residues correspond to split algebraic groups over a field of cardinality at least 4. A similar result follows for twin buildings whose rank 2 residues are finite.

A Characterization of Twin Buildings by Twin Apartments

A twin building is a pair of buildings along with a certain ’codistance' between chambers of one building, and chambers of the other. All spherical buildings can be regarded as twin buildings (such a building is twinned with itself in a natural way), and the aim of this paper is to give a definition of twin buildings along the lines that Tits originally gave for spherical buildings. This alternative approach via apartments has been used by the first author in studying some group actions on twin buildings.

On certain twin buildings over tree diagrams

We classify twin buildings over tree diagrams such that all rank 2 residues are either nite Moufang polygons but no octagons, or Moufang polygons associated to the groups PGL3 ,P Sp 4 or G2. As a byproduct, we obtain some results on Moufang sets.

We give a presentation by amalgamation of certain Min BN-pairs. Our result generalizes a theorem of Tits about spherical BN-pairs. Applying the theory of twin buildings, both authors obtained the result by different methods.

Packaged Goods Marketing — “Pull” Companies Look to Improved “Push”

Consumer packaged goods is an industry long known for its reliance on “pull” marketing strategies, that is, clever brand positioning supported by heavy advertising and couponing. As many product categories have become mature in the 1980's, managers find themselves increasingly concerned with improving the productivity of “push” programs — trade deals and personal selling efforts aimed at retailers and wholesalers. This article reports the results of an in‐depth, descriptive study of “push” marketing techniques among packaged goods companies. Discussed are: (a) specific “push” programs initiated on both the marketing (brand management) and sales force sides of the business, and (b) organizational moves to enhance integration and coordination between the Sales and Marketing groups. A concluding section urges packaged goods marketers to regard the “push” and “pull” components as twin building blocks of a companywide marketing strategy.
