A Study on ChatGPT Film and Television Subtitle Translation from the Perspective of Three-Dimensional Transformation---Take The Story of Minglan for example

Based on the theory of Eco-translatology, this article conducts a study on the subtitle translation of the overseas version of the TV drama The Story of Minglan from the perspective of “three-dimensional transformation,” focusing on the translation generated by ChatGPT, and comparing them with Google Translation, Baidu Translation, and DeepL Translation, aiming to evaluate the effectiveness of ChatGPT in subtitle translation for films and television shows. Firstly, this research employs a quantitative analysis method by using two automatic assessment metrics, BLEU and TER, in order to quantify translation quality. Furthermore, case study and qualitative analysis methods are used to compare and analyze the differences in accuracy, linguistic fluency, and cultural adaptability between the YouTube subtitles of the overseas version of The Story of Minglan and the translation generated by ChatGPT from the perspectives of language, culture, and communication. The results indicate that while ChatGPT translations exhibit some readability, the model still shows limitations in handling ideological issues, cultural transmission, emotional capture, and translation accuracy.

IMPACT OF OCCUPATIONAL POWER AND SOCIAL STATUS DEPICTED IN PAKISTANI TV DRAMAS: A SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS

This research paper is based on how our Pakistani TV dramas portray occupational power and social status through their distinctive setting. Through a sociological analysis, we explored the issue of why Pakistani TV dramas depict typical appearances and specific kinds of dressing to represent a particular social class, e.g., shalwar kameez for the poor and jeans for the rich. Even professional careers such as schoolteachers for the middle class and fashion designers for the upper class are based upon the same factors. A character’s typical background and belongings are also used to show his social status, e.g., in most dramas, middle-class men wear slippers, and the rich wear branded shoes, sunglasses, and watches. In this study, we argue that the depiction of social class is often biased and does not precisely reflect reality. This significantly impacts the viewers’ minds. This visual representation is evident in Pakistani Urdu television dramas of the past ten years. Using a qualitative research design, we collected our data through in-depth interviews to evaluate the social impact of these visual representations. The paper also supports George Gerbner’s Cultivation Analysis theory and its arguments, proving how TV dramas directly impact heavy viewers’ minds, reflecting their behavior.

This paper studies the cultural phenomenon of nhc Hoa li Vit, a (sub)genre of nhc Vng music that blends Chinese melodies with Vietnamese lyrics which first gained prominence among the Vietnamese diaspora in the 1980s. The paper traces the historical and cultural origins of nhc Hoa li Vit in translations and adaptations of Chinese popular music, outlining three major historical periods. The first period spanning from 1979-1986, encompasses the genres emergence in Vietnamese refugee communities following the Sino-Vietnamese War, influenced by the popularity of Cantonese wuxia TV dramas. The second period from 1986-1995 marks the genres commercial flourishing due to the i mi policy. The final period after 1995 marks the fundamental transformation of the genre following the normalization of relations between the United States and Vietnam, when, energized by the possibility of returning to Vietnam, nhc Hoa li Vit shed the final vestiges of the melancholic and sentimental style it inherited from wartime nhc Vng and became its own genre. This paper examines the importance of nhc Hoa li Vit in shaping the Vietnamese exiled identity and analyzes how the practice of translation allowed the diasporic community to give expression to its refugee experience. The paper helps uncover a new kind of musical fusion that developed from an exiled culture in a transpacific context.

THE REPRESENTATION OF THE MONG ETHNIC GROUP IN THE VIETNAMESE TV DRAMA SERIES “MÙA XUÂN Ở LẠI” (2020)

This research examines the representation of Mong ethnic group in the TV drama series “Mùa xuân ở lại” (2020) and discusses the implications of this representation for a wide-ranging social and cultural context. Employing the framework of Fairclough (2001) and Kress, G. and van Leeuwen, T. (2006), the data analysis has revealed the following findings on the Mong people in the film: (1) Mong people’s living environment is underdeveloped and insecure; (2) Mong people’s economy is agricultural-based with a heavy reliance on nature, (3) Mong people are poorly educated, (4) Mong people still preserve backward social and cultural practices, (5) Mong people play a passive role in the interethnic relationship with Kinh people. Apparently, the way that the Mong people and their life are portrayed in the film tends to perpetuate long-held stereotypes of this ethnic group in Vietnamese media.

‘We must be happy that times are different now’. Shaping public memory of Danish colonial history in popular culture

ABSTRACT In recent years Denmark’s legacy as a colonial power has become a topic of political, cultural, and public debate. The article discusses how Denmark’s colonial relationship with Greenland is presented to a contemporary Danish audience in the film, The Experiment (2010), and in the fourth season of the TV drama, Borgen (2022). These popular cultural artefacts, we claim, not only reflect, but have informed public and political debate in Denmark about its colonial past, including historical and present-day civic norms and their implementation into political practice. In this way, they have contributed to a renegotiation of public morality and memory.

Changing minds about climate change in Indonesia through a TV drama

Drama has been shown to change attitudes and inspire action on topics as diverse as health, sanitation, intergroup conflict, and gender equality, but rarely have randomized trials assessed the influence of narrative entertainment programs focusing on climate change and environmental protection. We report the results of an experiment in which young Indonesian adults were sampled from five metropolitan areas. Participants were randomly assigned to watch a condensed two-hour version of a new award-winning TV drama series #CeritaKita (Our Story)—and accompanying social media discussion program Ngobrolin #CeritaKita (Chatter—Our Story)—as opposed to a placebo drama/discussion that lacked climate and environmental content. Outcomes were assessed via survey 1–7 days after exposure to the shows, and through a follow up survey after 5 months. We find that the treatment group became significantly more knowledgeable about environmental issues such as deforestation, an effect that persists long term. Other outcomes, such as motivation to participate in public discussion on climate change, willingness to follow influencers who post about environmental issues on social media, support for policies to address climate change and support for more media coverage of this issue, moved initially after viewing but subsided over time, possibly due to lack of continued exposure and other changes in context. This pattern of results suggests that ongoing/seasonal programming may be needed in order to sustain attitudinal and behavioral change. Draw media market investments, and change public narratives at scale when it matters change.

Study on the Path of Intercultural Communication of Television DramaTake Queen of Tears as an Example

Korean film and television dramas are one of the important carriers of intercultural communication in Korean culture. The study of the reasons for the popularity of Korean dramas from the perspective of intercultural communication has received extensive attention, but there is still a lack of in-depth research on the latest explosive Korean dramas. This paper will take the Korean drama Queen of Tears, which exploded in the first half of 2024, as a sample to analyze the reasons for the popularity of the Korean drama Queen of Tears in China under the cross-cultural communication path. The paper analyses that the popularity of Queen of Tears is inextricably linked to the interplay of casting, plot, filming, and production. Based on this, this essay proposes that domestic TV dramas should pay attention to character suitability in casting, rich and diversified plots, and character settings, and focus on short-video marketing and other suggestions, hoping to shed some light on the production of domestic TV dramas, to promote the export of Chinese culture to foreign countries.

The Implications of Queer Representation in Contemporary South Korean TV Narratives

Existing scholarly works on the topic of queer representation in South Korean media focus primarily on Korean cinema and K-pop, but there are far fewer studies on queer or queer-coded portrayals in Korean TV media. Queer characters and relationships are gradually becoming more visible in mainstream South Korean TV with some examples being Semantic Error which centers on the romantic relationship between two men and Nevertheless which depicts the feelings of friendship between two women turn clearly romantic. Considering the significant rise in popularity of Korean TV dramas not only in Asia but also in western society, where audiences are more conscious of queer narratives, the realm of queer representation in Korean TV definitely warrants more scholarly attention. I aim to contribute to the conversation about depictions of queerness in Korean media by analyzing the representation of queer characters in 2021 TV drama Work Later, Drink Now, specifically the queer subtext of Jigoo and Jiyeon’s relationship, and how this story reveals South Korean perceptions of queer experiences by matching and/or distinguishing itself from the tragic narratives that queer characters are often depicted in Korean TV dramas. I will also analyze the reception of this show by South Korean society in relation to queer identity based on its references in Korean pop culture and online fan discussions. I argue that the writer of Work Later, Drink Now intended to provide commentary not only on the situation of women in contemporary South Korean society, but she also pushed an underlying queer narrative, aiming to shed light on the reality of being, specifically, a queer woman in South Korea.

Positioning gender in time-travel: time-travel TV dramas as dialogic resources for constructing and re-imagining identity among Mainland Chinese postgraduates in Hong Kong

ABSTRACT Time-travel television dramas have recently gained tremendous popularity worldwide. Defying stereotypes of romance TV dramas as women’s genres, time-travel romance TV drama genres seem to have attracted young men and women of different walks of life. Informed by positioning theory and Bakhtin’s heteroglossic dialogism, this study investigates a group of bilingual Mainland Chinese, heterosexual postgraduate students’ consumption of a Chinese time-travel TV drama, Scarlet Heart. It is found that well-educated Mainland Chinese women and men are still confronted with dilemmas of gender role boundaries and pressure to subscribe to traditional gender values. However, the time-travel TV drama has enabled the interviewees to negotiate new gender relations when they assign different positions to the female protagonist and themselves in the discussion. It is therefore proposed that time-travel TV dramas can be appropriated as dialogic resources for ideological becoming and critical literacy activities for facilitating construction of alternative subject positions and identities.

Based on the movement of the operator, the search for its objective, the overlapping of the narrative systems, and its use in accordance with the narrative sequences created by the artworkmaker, the recipient is able to keep track of the events and expand the narrative of the events, as determined by the artwork industry, thus creating a beautiful response and arriving at the composition of the meaning of the visual output. Therefore, the problem of research can be formulated with the following question: What are the ways in which the dramatic narrative and spatial intuitions can be reflected in the output? The aim of the research is to detect dramatic robotics and spatial structure transformations in visual output.

Congratulations DiGeST on this ten-year anniversary! Thinking about research agendas, I find that decades as a unit of time make me hop scotch back several. For three decades now (cultural) citizenship has been my key concept of choice. In alignment with the core focus of this journal, I have tried to understand and employ 'inclusion' as a key part of the 'doing' of cultural citizenship: the way in which others – like me and unlike me –, use media culture (and especially popular entertainment from sports to TV drama, to games, to social media) to relate to what is going on in the world and to come to implicit and explicit definitions of what is best for the most of us. I do so with a strong investment in feminism, far more than in gender, as such. Don't get me wrong: gender is important, but sensitivity to power and structural inequality is more urgent. Dignity and respect for all matters more than individualizing definitions of core or essential selves. A paradox, obviously, as this is exactly what others may be invested in.

Acceptance of Sexual and Gender Minorities through Romance TV Drama Series with LGBT Characters: The Voices of College Students in Thailand

This study focused on the views of 77 current college students in Thailand on gay-related romantic TV dramas and their social impact. The survey aims to determine how gay-related romantic dramas affect the understanding of and discrimination against LGBTQ+ people in Thai society and to propose solutions based on the results. The survey results suggest that gay-related romantic dramas may have an impact on social perceptions and tolerance toward LGBTQ+ people. Positive opinions emphasized that the dramas promote understanding between different generations and cultures and provide opportunities to accept LGBTQ+ identities. On the other hand, negative opinions expressed concern that the dramas are removed from reality and do not adequately reflect the real situations and issues of LGBTQ+ people. Based on these findings, this study provides valuable suggestions for improving LGBTQ+ public awareness and understanding. These recommendations aim to enhance public awareness and comprehension of LGBTQ+ matters, with the understanding that the students’ voices are crucial in this process.

In our daily lives, understanding and using language is an art. We not only are supposed to know its surface meaning, but also understand its implicature. The successful use of language will yield twice the result with half the effort. The dialogue of characters in TV dramas is an important manifestation of language. The simple form and rich language style of The Legend of Zhen Huan is one of the important factors for the show to become the pinnacle of harem-themed TV dramas in China in past years. The cooperative principle and politeness principle in pragmatics are important theoretical foundations for character analysis. This paper takes a number of specific dialogues in The Legend of Zhen Huan as examples, according to the backgrounds of the plots, combined with the classic theory of pragmatics, analyzes 10 examples selected from the TV series of The Legend of Zhen Huan, attempts to reveal how and when characters obeys and violates CP and PP, and experiences its unique linguistic charm.
