Corporate Raiding Russian Style: Hostile Takeovers via Corruption and Fraud

Raiding along with corruption is the number one problem in Russia. Raiding is a hostile takeover that manifests a fight for property or other valuable assets that often involves corruption and fraud. In addition to production facilities, real estate and land are major targets of raiders. Raiding reaches far beyond private enterprises. Raids are organized against the state enterprises and state property as well. Documents show that disposal fields, industrial waste, oil refineries, private banks, public utility companies, electricity and oil distribution centers, facilities, and pipelines, abandoned state and private plants, entertainment centers, sea ports, construction sites, agricultural land, resort areas, economic quotas on exploitation of natural resources, resort areas, tanks and ammunition, technologies and technical documentation, TV companies, radio frequencies, and even dolphins are all targets of raiders. Essentially, anything of value is potentially an object for a raider attack. Oftentimes, raiding attacks are supported by the state organizations, including courts. The mechanisms used for raiding attacks vary and are likely to increase in variety and become more sophisticated. Confusing tax system and tax evasion charges are used for taking over large companies with the use of the state apparatus.

OPTIMAL SELECTION OF PROGRAM SUPPLIERS FOR TV COMPANIES USING AN ANALYTIC NETWORK PROCESS (ANP) APPROACH

In today's increasingly competitive business world, selecting and evaluating the suppliers is one of the most important activities of a company. In the Taiwanese TV industry, selecting optimal suppliers of programs is also vital. But few attempts have so far been made to address this specific point. After reviewing the literature, we collect criteria for the selection of a program supplier. Considering the interdependence among the selection criteria, the analytic network process (ANP) is applied to help Taiwanese TV companies to effectively select optimal program suppliers. To avoid the complicated computing process from additional pairwise comparisons of the ANP, we retain the 12 critical criteria according to the opinions of the 44 senior executives about the importance of criteria: Quality, On-time, Marketability, Reputation, Rating, Finance, Relationship, Attitude, Communication, Creativity, Price and Time. Subsequently, we discuss with senior executives to group these criteria into 4 perspectives to structure the hierarchy for the selection of program suppliers. According to the hierarchy based on 4 perspectives and 12 vital criteria, Taiwanese TV companies could select optimal program suppliers more effectively. Moreover, the practical application of the ANP presented in Section 4 is generic and also suitable to be exploited for Taiwanese TV companies.

Measuring the managerial performance of TV companies

A multiple criteria managerial performance measurement model is generalized in this paper for Taiwanese TV companies. The balanced scorecard (BSC), combination of both financial and non-financial perspectives and criteria, creates a more accurate performance measurement system because it offers a more complete view of a business and can lead to better business decisions. Due to the interdependent relations in decision making, we apply analytic network process (ANP) that tolerates the interrelated relationship among the perspectives and criteria to handle such problems. After reviewing the literatures about the BSC, we collect criteria for managerial performance assessment. To avoid the complicated computing process from additional pairwise comparisons of the ANP, we interview the 105 executives to retain the 12 critical criteria, including: Proposal, Employees' satisfaction, Turnover, Film, Data, Program, Quality, Customers' satisfaction, Market, Revenue, Budget and Profit. According to the hierarchy, Taiwanese TV companies could measure the managerial performance more effectively. A specialized Excel software program was made to facilitate the decision-making process.

Select televised sportscasters for Olympic Games by analytic network process

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to show how a multiple criteria decision‐making method, the analytic network process (ANP) is applied to help Taiwanese TV companies to effectively select optimal televised sportscasters for the Olympic Games.Design/methodology/approachAfter interviewing 44 practitioners, criteria for the selection of the Olympic Games televised sportscasters were collected. To avoid the complicated computing process from additional pairwise comparisons of the ANP, the 12 critical criteria that were mentioned more than 30 times by theses respondents were retained. After discussions with 18 senior executives these were classified in three perspectives to structure the hierarchy for the selection of the Olympic Games televised sportscasters.FindingsAfter discussions with the 18 senior executives, it is found that the selection criteria for televised sportscasters are interrelated. Unlike former contributors who ignored the interdependence among factors, a more feasible and accurate approach, the ANP, which captures the dependent relationship, is applied in this paper to handle such problems.Practical implicationsAccording to the hierarchy base on three perspectives and 12 important criteria, Taiwanese TV companies could select the optimal Olympic Games televised sportscasters more effectively. A practical application of the ANP presented is generic and could be exploited for Taiwanese TV companies.Originality/valueThe Olympic Games are one of the most important and most popular sporting events in the world. This paper contributes to a more effective selection of the optimal Olympic Games televised sportscasters.
