The Great Lakes School of Turfgrass Science: A Nine-State Online Collaboration to Improve the Turfgrass Short Course

Increasing costs and decreasing numbers of university Extension faculty have made it difficult to provide quality turfgrass short course education. In response, faculty from nine institutions collaborated to develop the Great Lakes School of Turfgrass Science. This 12-week online course provides students with unique learning experiences through a combination of assigned readings, quizzes, lectures, and live instructor discussion. Student attendance increased and costs decreased relative to traditional in-person short courses. Additionally, student feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. These results demonstrate that online courses such as this can provide an effective and flexible source of knowledge that meets the busy schedules of students and instructors.

Remarkable Mind: Henry (Hank) Fossey, Phd (Ii)

Fossey, a premier horticultural researcher and an expert in turfgrass science, has founded Turf Technologies, a firm that performs commercial turfgrass research. On the first contract that Fossey secured, he was paid a consulting fee of $75,000 for a six-month period. Now Fossey has been asked by Bryant of the Re-Markable Paint Co. to assist in developing an alternative formulation for removable paint that is environmentally appropriate and suitable for artificial turf and grass and expects to secure an $85,000 consulting fee for the six-month contract with Re-Markable Paint. You have received patents for many of your breakthrough turf technologies and processes. Until recently, the fruits of your labor have provided you with minimal financial benefit. Most of the upside has been captured by the University of Florida (Gainesville). You never pursued this career for the money, but your three children will all be entering college within the next five years, and you would like to have the resources to comfortably fund their college educations and also make up for some of the sacrifices that your family made while you were building your reputation. Your compensation as a faculty member is generous, but you will certainly not get rich from it. Speedzone has Potential for Postemergence Goosegrass Control in Perennial Ryegrass and Creeping Bentgrass

Goosegrass (Eleusine indica [L.] Gaertn.) is a C4 summer annual distributed throughout the transition zone and can be problematic in sports fields and lawns, but more often is problematic in golf course greens and tees where preemergence (PRE) herbicides are rarely used because of frequent reseeding in-season. The postemergence (POST) herbicides monosodium methanearsonate (MSMA), fenoxaprop-ethyl, or sulfentrazone are commonly used to control goosegrass on golf courses. However, MSMA has recently lost most of its labeled uses (EPA, 2013), while fenoxaprop-ethyl is restricted from use at mowing heights less than 0.25 inch (Anonymous, 2005) and sulfentrazone is restricted from use on golf course greens or tees (Anonymous, 2012). In July 2011, control of goosegrass was reported when Speedzone was applied to golf course tees to control summer annual broadleaves in Omaha, NE (J. Calentine, personal communication, 2011). This was further reported anecdotally at multiple sites in Nebraska later that summer. Therefore, we began our studies in 2012 with the objectives of confirming if Speedzone has potential for goosegrass control and if so, what application rates and intervals are most effective while still safe on cool-season turfgrasses. The experiment was conducted in 2012 and 2013 at the John Seaton Anderson Turf Research Facility near Mead, NE. In October of 2011, sand-based thinly cut sod of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) from a tee on a local goosegrass-infested golf course was moved to the experimental site, distributed evenly and tilled into the top inch of soil. Soil type on the experimental area was Tomek silty clay loam (fine, montmorillonitic, mesic Typic Argiudoll) with pH 6.9 and 2.7% organic matter. A perennial ryegrass blend was seeded at 3 lbs/1000 sq ft in April 2012 to establish a thin turf cover. Following establishment, the area was irrigated to prevent water stress, mowed at 0.625 inch, and not fertilized to minimize turf competition with goosegrass. Comparison of Rotational Traction of Athletic Footwear on Varying Playing Surfaces Using Different Normal Loads

As an athlete accelerates, stops, and changes direction, numerous forces are transmitted to the lower extremities. The interaction between an athlete’s shoe and the playing surface has been indicated as a factor in lower extremity injury risk. In particular, high rotational forces may result in increased injuries to the lower extremities. Rotational traction forces produced by eight different cleated shoes on Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), AstroTurf GameDay Grass 3D, FieldTurf Revolution, and Sportexe Omnigrass 51 under three normal loads (vertical forces) of 787, 1054, and 1321 N were measured using Pennfoot, a portable traction testing device. Of the treatments in this study, shoe type influenced rotational traction most, with differences among shoes being nearly four times as large as those among playing surfaces. Traction was either the same or within several Nm on each surface tested. Traction on the three synthetic turf surfaces ranged from 49.3 to 53.1 Nm and the traction level of Kentucky bluegrass was 52.3 Nm. Traction levels among shoes ranged from 43.8 to 58.6 Nm. The results of this study indicate that footwear selection has a larger effect on rotational traction, and potentially injury risk, than the playing surfaces evaluated in this study. Traction Testing on Natural and Synthetic Turf The interaction between an athlete’s shoe and the playing surface likely influences lower extremity injury risk. Specifically, injuries to lower extremities may result from an athlete’s foot becoming “entrapped” in the playing surface during pivoting movements (Lambson et al, 1996; Orchard et al., 2001; Torg et al., 1974). Researchers have attempted to quantify lower extremity injury risk by measuring the rotational traction forces that occur between shoes and playing surfaces (Andreasson et al., 1986; Bonstingl et al, 1975; Heidt et al., 1996; Livesay et al., 2006; McNitt et al., 2004a; Torg et al., 1996; Villwock et al., 2009a, 2009b). Rotational traction is the traction related to rotational motion about an axis normal to the surface (American Society for Testing and Materials, 2009). Temperature Effects on the Speed and Completion of Germination of 19 Commercially Available Seeded Bermudagrass Cultivars

The use of seeded bermudagrasses (Cynodon dactylon) is increasing as athletic field and golf course turf. Anecdotal evidence indicates probable and important differences in germination rates among cultivars when established in late spring or early summer. Germination studies were completed in May 2011 in the Turfgrass Science Laboratory at the University of Kentucky on 19 commercially available seeded bermudagrass cultivars. Evaluations for germination rate and total germination under varying temperature regimes representing 20-year average day/night temperatures for seeding times from 15 May to 1 Aug. were conducted to quantify any differences in germination characteristics among cultivars as affected by temperature. There were highly significant differences (P &lt; 0.0001) among cultivars in germination rate and total germination when grown under 20-year average day/night temperatures. The cultivars Casino Royale and Riviera consistently represented the fastest/slowest to germinate and highest/lowest total seeds germinated across all temperature regimes, respectively. Significant differences (P &lt; 0.0001) were also observed within cultivars for total germination across the temperature regimes tested. The average temperatures of 15 May and 1 Aug. represented slowest/fastest to germinate and lowest/highest total seeds germinated across all temperature regimes, respectively.
