Time-resolved quantification of key species and mechanistic insights in low-temperature tetrahydrofuran oxidation.

We investigate the kinetics and report the time-resolved concentrations of key chemical species in the oxidation of tetrahydrofuran (THF) at 7500 torr and 450-675 K. Experiments are carried out using high-pressure multiplexed photoionization mass spectrometry (MPIMS) combined with tunable vacuum ultraviolet radiation from the Berkely Lab Advanced Light Source. Intermediates and products are quantified using reference photoionization (PI) cross sections, when available, and constrained by a global carbon balance tracking approach at all experimental temperatures simultaneously for the species without reference cross sections. From carbon balancing, we determine time-resolved concentrations for the ROO˙ and ˙OOQOOH radical intermediates, butanedial, and the combined concentration of ketohydroperoxide (KHP) and unsaturated hydroperoxide (UHP) products stemming from the ˙QOOH + O2 reaction. Furthermore, we quantify a product that we tentatively assign as fumaraldehyde, which arises from UHP decomposition via H2O or ˙OH + H loss. The experimentally derived species concentrations are compared with model predictions using the most recent literature THF oxidation mechanism of Fenard et al., (Combust. Flame, 2018, 191, 252-269). Our results indicate that the literature mechanism significantly overestimates THF consumption and the UHP + KHP concentration at our conditions. The model predictions are sensitive to the rate coefficient for the ROO˙ isomerization to ˙QOOH, which is the gateway for radical chain propagating and branching pathways. Comparisons with our recent results for cyclopentane (Demireva et al., Combust. Flame, 2023, 257, 112506) provide insights into the effect of the ether group on reactivity and highlight the need to determine accurate rate coefficients of ROO˙ isomerization and subsequent reactions.

Tracking the reaction networks of acetaldehyde oxide and glyoxal oxide Criegee intermediates in the ozone-assisted oxidation reaction of crotonaldehyde.

The reaction of unsaturated compounds with ozone (O3) is recognized to lead to the formation of Criegee intermediates (CIs), which play a key role in controlling the atmospheric budget of hydroxyl radicals and secondary organic aerosols. The reaction network of two CIs with different functionality, i.e. acetaldehyde oxide (CH3CHOO) and glyoxal oxide (CHOCHOO) formed in the ozone-assisted oxidation reaction of crotanaldehyde (CA), is investigated over a temperature range between 390 K and 840 K in an atmospheric pressure jet-stirred reactor (JSR) at a residence time of 1.3 s, stoichiometry of 0.5 with a mixture of 1% crotonaldehyde, 10% O2, at an fixed ozone concentration of 1000 ppm and 89% Ar dilution. Molecular-beam mass spectrometry in conjunction with single photon tunable synchrotron vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) radiation is used to identify elusive intermediates by means of experimental photoionization energy scans and ab initio threshold energy calculations for isomer identification. Addition of ozone (1000 ppm) is observed to trigger the oxidation of CA already at 390 K, which is below the temperature where the oxidation reaction of CA was observed in the absence of ozone. The observed CA + O3 product, C4H6O4, is found to be linked to a ketohydroperoxide (2-hydroperoxy-3-oxobutanal) resulting from the isomerization of the primary ozonide. Products corresponding to the CIs uni- and bi-molecular reactions were observed and identified. A network of CI reactions is identified in the temperature region below 600 K, characterized by CIs bimolecular reactions with species like aldehydes, i.e., formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and crotonaldehyde and alkenes, i.e., ethene and propene. The region below 600 K is also characterized by the formation of important amounts of typical low-temperature oxidation products, such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), methyl hydroperoxide (CH3OOH), and ethyl hydroperoxide (C2H5OOH). Detection of additional oxygenated species such as alcohols, ketene, and aldehydes are indicative of multiple active oxidation routes. This study provides important information about the initial step involved in the CIs assisted oligomerization reactions in complex reactive environments where CIs with different functionalities are reacting simultaneously. It provides new mechanistic insights into ozone-assisted oxidation reactions of unsaturated aldehydes, which is critical for the development of improved atmospheric and combustion kinetics models.

Precise determination of adiabatic ionisation energies of large polyatomic molecules: p-diaminobenzene

We present a procedure, based on established principles, to accurately determine the ionisation energies of medium-sized to large polyatomic molecules in supersonic beams. The method combines single-photon excitation from the electronic ground state using tunable vacuum-ultraviolet laser radiation, the delayed pulsed-field ionisation of high Rydberg states with sequences of pulsed electric fields, and the modelling of the lineshapes from calculations of the field-ionisation dynamics of high Rydberg states and of the rotational contours of the photoelectron bands. The method is illustrated by a measurement of the adiabatic ionisation energy of p-diaminobenzene (p-DB), for which we obtain the value of 54,617.47(15) cm , which represents a more than 20-fold accuracy improvement over previous determinations.

Magic Numbers and Stabilities of Photoionized Water Clusters: Computational and Experimental Characterization of the Nanosolvated Hydronium Ion.

The stability and distributions of small water clusters generated in a supersonic beam expansion are interrogated by tunable vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation generated at a synchrotron. Time-of-flight mass spectrometry reveals enhanced population of various protonated water clusters (H+(H2O)n) based upon ionization energy and photoionization distance from source, suggesting there are "magic" numbers below the traditional n = 21 that predominates in the literature. These intensity distributions suggest that VUV threshold photoionization (11.0-11.5 eV) of neutral water clusters close to the nozzle exit leads to a different nonequilibrium state compared to a skimmed molecular beam. This results in the appearance of a new magic number at 14. Metadynamics conformer searches coupled with modern density functional calculations are used to identify the global minimum energy structures of protonated water clusters between n = 2 and 21, as well as the manifold of low-lying metastable minima. New lowest energy structures are reported for the cases of n = 5, 6, 11, 12, 16, and 18, and special stability is identified by several measures. These theoretical results are in agreement with the experiments performed in this work in that n = 14 is shown to exhibit additional stability, based on the computed second-order stabilization energy relative to most cluster sizes, though not to the extent of the well-known n = 21 cluster. Other cluster sizes that show some additional energetic stability are n = 7, 9, 12, 17, and 19. To gain insight into the balance between ion-water and water-water interactions as a function of the cluster size, an analysis of the effective two-body interactions (which sum exactly to the total interaction energy) was performed. This analysis reveals a crossover as a function of cluster size between a water-hydronium-dominated regime for small clusters and a water-water-dominated regime for larger clusters around n = 17.

A New Pathway for Intersystem Crossing: Unexpected Products in the O(3P) + Cyclopentene Reaction.

We investigated the reaction of O(3P) with cyclopentene at 4 Torr and 298 K using time-resolved multiplexed photoionization mass spectrometry, where O(3P) radicals were generated by 351 nm photolysis of NO2 and reacted with excess cyclopentene in He under pseudo-first-order conditions. The resulting products were sampled, ionized, and detected by tunable synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet radiation and an orthogonal acceleration time-of-flight mass spectrometer. This technique enabled measurement of both mass spectra and photoionization spectra as functions of time following the initiation of the reaction. We observe propylketene (41%), acrolein + ethene (37%), 1-butene + CO (19%), and cyclopentene oxide (3%), of which the propylketene pathway was previously unidentified experimentally and theoretically. The automatically explored reactive potential energy landscape at the CCSD(T)-F12a/cc-pVTZ//ωB97X-D/6-311++G(d,p) level and the related master equation calculations predict that cyclopentene oxide is formed on the singlet potential energy surface, whereas propylketene is first formed on the triplet surface. These calculations provide evidence that significant intersystem crossing can happen in this reaction not only around the geometry of the initial triplet adduct but also around that of triplet propylketene. The formation of 1-butene + CO is initiated on the triplet surface, with bond cleavage and hydrogen transfer occurring during intersystem crossing to the singlet surface. At present, we are unable to explain the mechanistic origins of the acrolein + ethene channel, and we thus refrain from assigning singlet or triplet reactivity to this channel. Overall, at least 60% of the products result from triplet reactivity. We propose that the reactivity of cyclic alkenes with O(3P) is influenced by their greater effective degree of unsaturation compared with acyclic alkenes. This work also suggests that searches for minimum-energy crossing points that connect triplet surfaces to singlet surfaces should extend beyond the initial adducts.

Dissociative Photoionization of Chloro-, Bromo-, and Iodocyclohexane: Thermochemistry and the Weak C-Br Bond in the Cation.

Double-imaging photoelectron photoion coincidence spectroscopy (i2PEPICO) with tunable synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet radiation was used to record threshold ionization mass spectra of the halocyclohexanes C6H11X (X = Cl, Br, and I). Calculations show that experimental dissociative ionization thresholds correspond to thermochemical limits. Among the processes observed (X loss, followed by C2H4 or C3H6 loss; C2H3Cl loss; HCl loss, followed by CH3 or C2H4 loss), halogen atom loss can be used to derive enthalpies of formation and C-X bond energies in the cation. As an ancillary value, we propose a new proton affinity for cyclohexene at PA298K(c-C6H10) = 771.5 ± 1.7 kJ mol-1. The halogen loss onsets 10.74 ± 0.06 eV, 10.125 ± 0.005, and 9.474 ± 0.005 eV thus yield ΔfHo298K(C6H11X (g)) = -164.4 ± 6.2, -114.4 ± 2.3, and -56.3 ± 2.3 kJ mol-1 for X = Cl, Br, and I, respectively. The last two agree with DFT-calculated isodesmic reaction energies very well, as opposed to G4 theory for X = Br. The C-X bond energy in the cation is the lowest for X = Br. This is the sum result of the weakening C-X bond in the neutral and the increasing stabilization of the parent ion with increasing halogen size.

Identification of the acetaldehyde oxide Criegee intermediate reaction network in the ozone-assisted low-temperature oxidation of trans-2-butene.

Uni- and bi-molecular reactions involving Criegee intermediates (CIs) have been the focus of many studies due to the role these molecules play in atmospheric chemistry. The reactivity of CIs is known to strongly depend on their structure. The reaction network of the second simplest CI, acetaldehyde oxide (CH3CHOO), is investigated in this work in an atmospheric pressure jet-stirred reactor (JSR) during the ozonolysis of trans-2-butene to explore the kinetic pathways relevant to atmospheric chemistry and low-temperature combustion. The mole fraction profiles of reactants, intermediates, and final products are determined by means of molecular-beam mass spectrometry in conjunction with single-photon ionization employing tunable synchrotron-generated vacuum ultraviolet radiation. A network of CI reactions is identified in the temperature region below 600 K, characterized by CI addition to trans-2-butene, water, formaldehyde, formic acid, and methanol. No sequential additions of the CH3CHOO CI are observed, in contrast with the reactivity of the simplest CI (H2COO) and the earlier observation of an extensive reaction network with up to four H2COO sequential additions (Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2019, 21, 7341-7357). Experimental photoionization efficiency scans recorded at 300 K and 425 K and ab initio threshold energy calculations lead to the identification and quantification of previously elusive intermediates, such as ketohydroperoxide and hydroperoxide species. Specifically, the C4H8 + O3 adduct is identified as a ketohydroperoxide (KHP, 3-hydroperoxybutan-2-one, CH3C(O)CH(CH3)OOH), while hydroxyacetaldehyde (glycolaldehyde, HCOCH2OH) formation is attributed to unimolecular isomerization of the CIs. Other hydroperoxide species such as methyl hydroperoxide (CH3OOH), ethyl hydroperoxide (C2H5OOH), butyl hydroperoxide (OOH), hydroperoxyl acetaldehyde (HOOCH2CHO), hydroxyethyl hydroperoxide (CH3CH(OH)OOH), but-1-enyl-3-hydroperoxide, and 4-hydroxy-3-methylpentan-2-one (HOCH(CH3)CH(CH3)C(O)CH3) are also identified. Detection of additional oxygenated species such as methanol, ethanol, ketene, and aldehydes suggests multiple active oxidation routes. These results provide additional evidence that CIs are key intermediates of the ozone-unsaturated hydrocarbon reactions providing critical inputs for improved kinetics models.

Direct time-resolved detection and quantification of key reactive intermediates in diethyl ether oxidation at T = 450-600 K.

High-pressure multiplexed photoionization mass spectrometry (MPIMS) with tunable vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) ionization radiation from the Lawrence Berkeley Labs Advanced Light Source is used to investigate the oxidation of diethyl ether (DEE). Kinetics and photoionization (PI) spectra are simultaneously measured for the species formed. Several stable products from DEE oxidation are identified and quantified using reference PI cross-sections. In addition, we directly detect and quantify three key chemical intermediates: peroxy (ROO˙), hydroperoxyalkyl peroxy (˙OOQOOH), and ketohydroperoxide (HOOP[double bond, length as m-dash]O, KHP). These intermediates undergo dissociative ionization (DI) into smaller fragments, making their identification by mass spectrometry challenging. With the aid of quantum chemical calculations, we identify the DI channels of these key chemical species and quantify their time-resolved concentrations from the overall carbon atom balance at T = 450 K and P = 7500 torr. This allows the determination of the absolute PI cross-sections of ROO˙, ˙OOQOOH, and KHP into each DI channel directly from experiment. The PI cross-sections in turn enable the quantification of ROO˙, ˙OOQOOH, and KHP from DEE oxidation over a range of experimental conditions that reveal the effects of pressure, O2 concentration, and temperature on the competition among radical decomposition and second O2 addition pathways.

Effects of water addition on the combustion of iso-octane investigated in laminar flames, low-temperature reactors, and an HCCI engine

The effect of H2O injection on the combustion process of iso-octane was investigated with the aim to better understand the suitability of water addition as a potential engine control parameter for homogeneous-charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion. Several experiments were combined including premixed low-pressure flames, a jet-stirred reactor (JSR) and a plug-flow reactor (PFR), both at atmospheric pressure, and a single-cylinder research engine (SCRE) operated with either iso-octane or RON 98 gasoline. The thermal effect of H2O addition was determined in laminar premixed iso-octane/O2/Ar flames (equivalence ratio Φ=1.4, 40 mbar) with H2O mole fractions of 0 to 0.22, where water addition reduced the temperature measured by laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) by up to 110 K. Speciation data were obtained from these flames as well as in the JSR (Φ=0.65, 933 mbar) and PFR experiments (Φ=0.65, 970 mbar) with and without H2O addition in the low- to intermediate temperature regime from 700–1100 K. The chemical analysis in these flame and reactor experiments was performed using molecular-beam mass spectrometry (MBMS) employing either electron ionization (EI) in the PFR and premixed flame or single-photon ionization (PI) by tunable vacuum-ultraviolet radiation in the JSR. The effects on species mole fractions were small which is supported by predictions from chemical-kinetic simulations. Quantitative speciation data of the exhaust gas of the SCRE were obtained by using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. A very similar species pool was detected in the laboratory-scale experiments and for the engine operation. It is thus assumed that these results could assist in guiding both the improvement of fundamental chemical-kinetic as well as HCCI engine control models.

Isomer-Selective Detection of Keto-Hydroperoxides in the Low-Temperature Oxidation of Tetrahydrofuran.

Keto-hydroperoxides (KHPs) are reactive, partially oxidized intermediates that play a central role in chain-branching reactions during the gas-phase low-temperature oxidation of hydrocarbons and oxygenated species. Although multiple isomeric forms of the KHP intermediate are possible in complex oxidation environments when multiple reactant radicals exist that contain nonequivalent O2 addition sites, isomer-resolved data of KHPs have not been reported. In this work, we provide partially isomer-resolved detection and quantification of the KHPs that form during the low-temperature oxidation of tetrahydrofuran (THF, cycl.-O-CH2CH2CH2CH2-). We describe how these short-lived KHPs were detected, identified, and quantified using integrated experimental and theoretical approaches. The experimental approaches were based on direct molecular-beam sampling from a jet-stirred reactor operated at near-atmospheric pressure and at temperatures between 500 and 700 K, followed by mass spectrometry with single-photon ionization via tunable synchrotron-generated vacuum-ultraviolet radiation, and the identification of fragmentation patterns. The interpretation of the experiments was guided by theoretical calculations of ionization thresholds, fragment appearance energies, and photoionization cross sections. On the basis of the experimentally observed and theoretically calculated ionization and fragment appearance energies, KHP isomers could be distinguished as originating from H-abstraction reactions from either the α-C adjacent to the O atom or the β-C atoms. Temperature-dependent concentration profiles of the partially resolved isomeric KHP intermediates were determined in the range of 500-700 K, and the results indicate that the observed KHP isomers are formed overwhelmingly (∼99%) from the α-C THF radical. Comparisons of the partially isomer-resolved quantification of the KHPs to up-to-date kinetic modeling results reveal new opportunities for the development of a next-generation THF oxidation mechanism.

The C5 chemistry preceding the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in a premixed 1-pentene flame

The formation of small polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their precursors can be strongly affected by reactions of C5 species. For improving existing combustion mechanisms for small PAH formation, it is therefore valuable to understand the fuel-specific chemistry of C5 fuels. To this end, we provide quantitative isomer-resolved species profiles measured in a laminar premixed (ϕ = 1.8) low-pressure (4 kPa) flame of 1-pentene with photoionization molecular-beam mass spectrometry (PI-MBMS) using tunable synchrotron vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) radiation. These experimental results are accompanied with numerical simulations, starting from models from the literature by Wang et al. [JetSurF version 2.0 (2010)] and Healy et al. [Energy Fuels 24 (2010) 1521–1528] that were developed for different fuels, but which include 1-pentene as an intermediate, and by Narayanaswamy et al. [Combust. Flame 157 (2010) 1879–1898] focusing on the small PAH chemistry. Taking observed discrepancies between experimental results and simulations into consideration, a mechanism for C5 chemistry was newly developed including PAH formation pathways, and its performance analyzed in detail. Special emphasis was placed on the initial fuel consumption of 1-pentene as well as on formation pathways of small aromatics. The mechanisms show differences regarding fuel decomposition and hydrocarbon growth reactions. These contribute to noticeable differences between the simulations with different models on one hand, and deviations between model predictions and experimental results on the other. While the new model presents overall satisfactory capabilities to predict the mole fraction profiles of common combustion intermediates, the predictive capability of the literature models was not fully satisfying for some intermediate species, including C4H6, C7H8, and C10H8. The results indicate that the fuel-specific C5 reaction routes as well as the mechanism for small PAH formation need further investigation.

Probing Reactivity of Gold Atoms with Acetylene and Ethylene with VUV Photoionization Mass Spectrometry and Ab Initio Studies.

Reaction of gold atoms with acetylene and ethylene in a laser ablation source produces a number of gold-containing species. Their photoionization efficiency (PIE) curves are measured using tunable vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation at the Advanced Light Source. Their structures are assigned by comparing the experimental ionization energies and PIE curves to those of potential isomers calculated at the CAM-B3LYP/aug-cc-pVTZ level. For smaller molecules, the contribution of ionization to excited electronic states of the cation is also included using photoionization cross sections calculated using ePolyScat. Reaction with acetylene produces adducts Au(C2H2) and Au(C2H2)2, as well as HAu(C4H2). Reaction with ethylene leads to adducts Au(C2H4), Au(C2H4)2, an adduct with a gold dimer, Au2(C2H4), as well as the gold hydrides AuH, HAu(C2H4), and HAu(C4H4). [Au,C4,H7] is also observed, and it likely corresponds to a gold alkyl, H2C═C(H)-Au(C2H4). Reactions leading to production of odd-hydrogen species are endothermic and are likely due to translationally or electronically excited gold atoms. These measurements provide the first directly measured ionization energy for gold hydride, IE(AuH) = 10.25 ± 0.05 eV. Combining this value with the dissociation energy of AuH+ gives a dissociation energy D0(AuH) = 3.15 ± 0.12 eV. Several other ionization energies are measured: IE(Au2(C2H4)) = 8.42 ± 0.05 eV, IE(HAu(C2H4)) = 9.35 ± 0.05 eV, IE(HAu(C4H2)) = 8.8 ± 0.1 eV, and IE(HAu(C4H4)) = 8.8 ± 0.1 eV.

Rotational dependence of the branching ratios and fragment angular distributions for the photodissociation of 12C16O in the Rydberg 4p(2) and 5p(0) complex region (92.84-93.37 nm).

12C16O shows complicated absorption structures in the wavelength range of 92.84-93.37 nm caused by the mutual interactions among the Rydberg 4p(2) and 5p(0) complexes, and several diffuse valence states. Here, we systematically measured the branching ratios and fragment angular distributions for the photodissociation of 12C16O in the wavelength range using our mini-time-slice velocity-map imaging (mini-TSVMI) setup and a tunable vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) laser radiation source generated by the two-photon resonance-enhanced four-wave mixing scheme. Various patterns of rotational dependence for the photodissociation branching ratios have been observed for different vibronic states, and they are found to be consistent with previous spectroscopic investigations, revealing the complicated coupling schemes and predissociation dynamics in this region. Irregular angular distributions of the photofragments have been observed, especially in the Rydberg 5p(0) complex region. This has been attributed to the simultaneous excitation of multiple states with different symmetries in this region. The newly observed underlying continuum in the Rydberg 5p(0) complex region has been directly detected in the present study, and it is found to be of 1Σ+ symmetry and dissociates predominantly into the C(3P) + O(3P) channel. This study generally confirms the results of previous spectroscopic studies from a different perspective, and adds new knowledge for understanding the complicated predissociation dynamics of 12C16O in the titled wavelength range.

How to add a five-membered ring to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) - molecular mass growth of the 2-naphthyl radical (C10H7) to benzindenes (C13H10) as a case study.

The three-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) 3H-benz[e]indene (C13H10) and 1H-benz[f]indene (C13H10) along with their naphthalene-based isomers 2-(prop-2-yn-1-yl)naphthalene (C13H10), 2-(prop-1-yn-1-yl)naphthalene (C13H10), and 2-(propa-1,2-dien-1-yl)naphthalene (C13H10) were formed through a "directed synthesis"via a high temperature chemical micro reactor under combustion-like conditions (1300 ± 35 K) through the reactions of the 2-naphthyl isomer (C10H7˙) with allene (C3H4) and methylacetylene (C3H4). The isomer distributions were probed utilizing tunable vacuum ultraviolet radiation from the Advanced Light Source (ALS) by recording the photoionization efficiency curves at mass-to-charge of m/z = 166 (C13H10) and 167 (13CC12H10) of the products in a supersonic molecular beam. Complemented by electronic structure calculations, our study reveals critical mass growth processes via annulation of a five-membered ring from the reaction between aryl radicals and distinct C3H4 isomers at elevated temperatures as present in combustion processes and in circumstellar envelopes of carbon stars. The underlying reaction mechanisms proceed through the initial addition of the 2-naphthyl radical with its radical center to the π-electron density of the allene and methylacetylene reactants via entrance barriers between 8 and 14 kJ mol-1, followed by isomerization (hydrogen shifts, ring closure), and termination via atomic hydrogen losses accompanied by aromatization. The reaction mechanisms reflect the formation of indene - the prototype PAH carrying a single five- and a single six-membered ring - synthesized through the reaction of the phenyl radical (C6H5˙) with allene and methylacetylene. This leads us to predict that aryl radicals - upon reaction with allene/methylacetylene - may undergo molecular mass growth processes via ring annulation and de facto addition of a five-membered ring to form molecular building blocks essential to transit planar PAHs out of the plane.

Low-Temperature Oxidation of Ethylene by Ozone in a Jet-Stirred Reactor.

Ethylene oxidation initiated by ozone addition (ozonolysis) is carried out in a jet-stirred reactor from 300 to 1000 K to explore the kinetic pathways relevant to low-temperature oxidation. The temperature dependencies of species' mole fractions are quantified using molecular-beam mass spectrometry with electron ionization and single-photon ionization employing tunable synchrotron-generated vacuum-ultraviolet radiation. Upon ozone addition, significant ethylene oxidation is found in the low-temperature regime from 300 to 600 K. Here, we provide new insights into the ethylene ozonolysis reaction network via identification and quantification of previously elusive intermediates by combining experimental photoionization energy scans and ab initio threshold energy calculations for isomer identification. Specifically, the C2H4 + O3 adduct C2H4O3 is identified as a keto-hydroperoxide (hydroperoxy-acetaldehyde, HOOCH2CHO) based on the calculated and experimentally observed ionization energy of 9.80 (±0.05) eV. Quantification using a photoionization cross-section of 5 Mb at 10.5 eV results in 5 ppm at atmospheric conditions, which decreases monotonically with temperature until 550 K. Other hydroperoxide species that contribute in larger amounts to the low-temperature oxidation of C2H4, like H2O2, CH3OOH, and C2H5OOH, are identified and their temperature-dependent mole fractions are reported. The experimental evidence for additional oxygenated species such as methanol, ketene, acetaldehyde, and hydroxy-acetaldehyde suggest multiple active oxidation routes. This experimental investigation closes the gap between ozonolysis at atmospheric and elevated temperature conditions and provides a database for future modeling.

Flame structure of laminar premixed anisole flames investigated by photoionization mass spectrometry and photoelectron spectroscopy

Two laminar, premixed, fuel-rich flames fueled by anisole-oxygen-argon mixtures with the same cold gas velocity and pressure were investigated by molecular-beam mass spectrometry at two synchrotron sources where tunable vacuum-ultraviolet radiation enables isomer-resolved photoionization. Decomposition of the very weak O–CH3 bond in anisole (C6H5OCH3) by unimolecular decomposition yields the resonantly-stabilized phenoxy radical (C6H5O). This key intermediate species opens reaction routes to five-membered ring species, such as cyclopentadiene (C5H6) and cyclopentadienyl radicals (C5H5). Anisole is often discussed as model compound for lignin to study the phenolic-carbon structure in this natural polymer. Measured temperature profiles and mole fractions of many combustion intermediates give detailed information on the flame structure. A very comprehensive reaction mechanism from the literature which includes a sub-scheme for anisole combustion is used for species modeling. Species with the highest measured mole fractions (on the order of 10−3–10−2) are CH3, CH4, C2H2, C2H4, C2H6, CH2O, C5H5 (cyclopentadienyl radical), C5H6 (cyclopentadiene), C6H6 (benzene), C6H5OH (phenol), and C6H5CHO (benzaldehyde). Some are formed in the first destruction steps of anisole, e.g., phenol and benzaldehyde, and their formation will be discussed and with regard to the modeling results. There are three major routes for the fuel destruction: (1) formation of benzaldehyde (C6H5CHO), (2) formation of phenol (C6H5OH), and (3) unimolecular decomposition of anisole to phenoxy (C6H5O) and CH3 radicals. In the experiment, the phenoxy radical could be measured directly. The phenoxy radical decomposes via a bicyclic structure into the soot precursor C5H5 and CO. Formation of larger oxygenated species was observed in both flames. One of them is guaiacol (2-methoxyphenol), which decomposes into fulvenone. The presented speciation data, which contain more than 60 species mole fraction profiles of each flame, give insights into the combustion kinetics of anisole.

Investigation of Oxidation Reaction Products of 2-Phenylethanol Using Synchrotron Photoionization.

A photolytically Cl-initiated oxidation reaction of 2-phenylethanol (2PE) was carried out at the Advanced Light Source (ALS) in the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Using the multiplex photoionization mass spectrometer, coupled with the tunable vacuum ultraviolet radiation of the ALS, data were collected at low pressure (4-6 Torr) and temperature (298-550 K) regimes. Data analysis was performed via characterization of the reaction species photoionization spectra and kinetic traces. Products and reaction pathways are also computed using the CBS-QB3 composite method. The present results suggest primary products m/ z = 30 (formaldehyde), 106 (benzaldehyde), and 120 (phenylacetaldehyde) at 298 K, and m/ z = 120 (phenylacetaldehyde) at 550 K. Branching fractions at room temperature are 27 ± 6.5% for formaldehyde, 24 ± 4.5% for benzaldehyde, and 25 ± 5.8% for phenylacetaldehyde and 60 ± 14% for phenylacetaldehyde at 550 K.

Differential capacity of kaolinite and birnessite to protect surface associated proteins against thermal degradation

It is widely accepted that soil organic carbon cycling depends on the presence and catalytic functionality of extracellular enzymes. Recent reports suggest that combusted and autoclaved soils may have the capacity to degrade organic test substrates to a larger extent than the living, enzyme-bearing soils. In search of the underlying mechanisms, we adsorbed Beta-Glucosidase (BG) and Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) on the phyllosilicate kaolinite and the manganese oxide birnessite at pH 5 and pH 7. The protein-mineral samples were then subjected to gradual energy inputs of a magnitude equivalent to naturally occurring wildfire events. The abundance and molecular masses of desorbed organic compounds were recorded after ionization with tunable synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet radiation (VUV). The mechanisms controlling the fate of proteins varied with mineralogy. Kaolinite adsorbed protein largely through hydrophobic interactions and, even at large energy inputs, produced negligible amounts of desorption fragments compared to birnessite. Acid birnessite adsorbed protein through coulombic forces at low energy levels, became a hydrolyzing catalyst at low energies and low pH, and eventually turned into a reactant involving disintegration of both mineral and protein at higher energy inputs. Fragmentation of proteins was energy dependent and did not occur below an energy threshold of 0.20 MW cm−2. Neither signal abundance nor signal intensity were a function of protein size. Above the energy threshold value, BG that had been adsorbed to birnessite at pH 7 showed an increase in signal abundance with increasing energy applications. Signal intensities differed with adsorption pH for BSA but only at the highest energy level applied. Our results indicate that proteins adsorbed to kaolinite may remain intact after exposure to such energy inputs as can be expected to occur in natural ecosystems. Protein fragmentation and concomitant loss of functionality must be expected in surface soils replete with pedogenic manganese oxides. We conclude that minerals can do both: protect enzymes at high energy intensities in the case of kaolinite and, in the case of birnessite, substitute for and even exceed the oxidative functionality that may have been lost when unprotected oxidative enzymes were denatured at high energy inputs.

Photoionization Efficiencies of Five Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons.

We have measured photoionization-efficiency curves for pyrene, fluoranthene, chrysene, perylene, and coronene in the photon energy range of 7.5-10.2 eV and derived their photoionization cross-section curves in this energy range. All measurements were performed using tunable vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation generated at the Advanced Light Source synchrotron at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The VUV radiation was used for photoionization, and detection was performed using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. We measured the photoionization efficiency of 2,5-dimethylfuran simultaneously with those of pyrene, fluoranthene, chrysene, perylene, and coronene to obtain references of the photon flux during each measurement from the known photoionization cross-section curve of 2,5-dimethylfuran.

Radical–radical reactions, pyrene nucleation, and incipient soot formation in combustion

We present a combined experimental and probabilistic simulation study of soot-precursor. The experiments were conducted using aerosol mass spectrometry coupled with tunable vacuum ultraviolet radiation from the Advanced Light Source at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Mass spectra and photoionization efficiency (PIE) curves of soot precursor species were measured at different heights in a premixed flat flame and in a counter-flow diffusion flame fueled by ethylene and oxygen. The PIE curves at the pyrene mass from these flames were compared with reference PIE scans recorded for pyrene. The results demonstrate that other C16H10 isomers than pyrene are major components among species condensed onto incipient soot in this study, which is in agreement with the simulations. Species with mass 202u only have a high prevalence in incipient soot particles drawn from the premixed flame, but hydrocarbon species with sizes in the range 200–400u are important to incipient-soot formation in both flames. The simulations predict that some species form through combination reactions involving relatively large radicals and bypass traditional molecular-growth pathways through addition of small hydrocarbon species. The experimental results support this prediction; they demonstrate that these species have higher relative abundances in particles formed close to the fuel outlet than smaller, lighter molecular species and indicate that these species are important to early formation of incipient-soot precursors. The results also imply that a leading role in incipient-soot precursor formation is played by species with lower thermal stability than the even-carbon numbered, unsubstituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons known as “stabilomers”.
