The impact of salesperson customer orientation on the evaluation of a salesperson’s ethical treatment, trust in the salesperson, and intentions to purchase

Previous research suggests that salespersons’ customer orientation can impact the effectiveness and outcomes of their selling interactions with customers. The purpose of this exploratory research was to create a foundation (based on prior results) for more comprehensive future work investigating customer judgments of a salesperson based on observed behaviors. Specifically, this study assessed whether a salesperson’s relational customer orientation (compared to a functional orientation) could trigger improved evaluations of a salesperson’s ethical treatment of a customer, increased trust in the salesperson, and stronger intentions to purchase. The relationships among perceptions of ethical treatment, trust, and purchase intentions were also explored. Using data collected from a large sample of working professionals, the results indicated that a relational selling approach resulted in increases in the three indicators of sales effectiveness. Additionally, perceived ethical treatment was positively related to trust in a salesperson and purchase intentions, and trust was positively related to purchase intentions. Implications for sales professionals in general as well as sales organizations and sales leaders in particular are discussed.

Perceived deception in online auctions: Antecedents and consequences

Despite the explosive growth of electronic commerce, individuals hesitate to shop online due to acts of deception, a behavior which is especially exaggerated on auction websites. The study explores antecedents of perceived deception from a deceptive impression management (IM) perspective to understand the consumer purchase decision process in online auctions. This study proposes online deceptive IM as the antecedent of perceived deception, and trust and transaction intention as consequences of perceived deception in online auctions. The study discusses the moderating effects of involvement with the online channel in consumer decision making. Possible approaches to addressing online deception are provided.

The Effects of TSI(Transaction Specific Investment) on Dependence, Trust, Commitment and Re-Contract Intention

Difference in the adoption of internet open markets between transition and established market economies

Open market is defined as a market or place where prices are determined by supply and demand. The study proposes and tests an integrated model of consumers' purchase intentions toward open markets and investigates the differences in the adoption of open markets between Korea and China. Based on an extended technology acceptance model, we examined the effects of perceived website quality (PWSQ), perceived usefulness, third-party recognition, satisfaction, and trust on purchase intentions. We selected Korea as an established market economy and China as a transition economy. We obtained 147 usable responses in Korea and 113 usable responses in China. We analyzed the empirical data by using structural equation modeling. The results for empirical data from Korea provide support for all hypotheses except for the effect of perceived website quality on satisfaction. By contrast, the results for empirical data from China provide support for all hypotheses except for the effect of trust on satisfaction and that of PWSQ on trust. That is, perceived usefulness and PWSQ had significant effects on satisfaction, and third-party recognition had a significant effect on trust. We examined the differences between China and Korea through a t test to demonstrate cultural differences in the adoption of open markets. The relationships between perceived usefulness and satisfaction and between satisfaction and purchase intention were stronger in Korea than in China. The study contributes by proposing an integrated framework for open markets composed of the antecedents of satisfaction, trust, and purchase intentions and by measuring PWSQ and third-party recognition to consider diverse aspects of transactions in open markets.

Research on Knowledge Coordination Model in Engineering Project Cooperation under the Network Environment

In the era of knowledge economy, under the network environment project collaborative knowledge construction has been paid more and more attention. Project team knowledge transfer between form a knowledge network, in line with the basic core in complex network theory goal-directed (edge network structure), has its uniqueness. In this paper, this paper discusses the knowledge network formation, network evolution stage, according to the knowledge sharing, knowledge transfer, knowledge learning and knowledge creation of four phases of the micro mechanism of knowledge collaboration, and points out that the body of knowledge of the cooperative intention, attitude and sense of trust, the body of knowledge of the network structure, location and neighborhood structure, the overall network effect and the types of knowledge, is an important factor affecting the knowledge synergy. Discusses the co-evolution of knowledge network project in cooperation, use the interpretative structural model to construct collaborative knowledge construction process of analogy model.

Negative spillover effects in brand cooperation

This research investigates negative spillover effects on brand trust and purchase intentions due to violations of implicit or explicit rules within brand cooperation (transgressions). In particular, this research examines a joint new product launch activity of a focal brand and a partner brand. Study 1, an experimental study with brand community members of the focal brand and different transgression scenarios, reveals fewer spillover effects on the focal brand when the partner brand is responsible for the transgression, and discovers more negative spillover effects on the partner brand when the focal brand causes the transgression. In other words, brand community members transfer the responsibility for the transgression to an external cause. Study 2 explores different forms of crisis communication in the context of a product launch delay and finds that a denial by the focal brand is more effective with respect to image restoration than a denial by the partner brand. However, when both brands deny responsibility at the same time, the denial negatively influences trust in both brands.

The Influence of Seller, Auctioneer, and Bidder Factors on Trust in Online Auctions

A growing body of research promotes the importance of trust in the business-to-consumer e-commerce environment. However, there has been little research on consumer trust in the new frontier of consumer-to-consumer (C2C) online auctions. The current study investigates the factors that influence bidders’ trust in online auctions from seller (trust arguments), bidder (disposition to trust), and auctioneer (structural assurance and perceived Web risk) perspectives in order to provide a more comprehensive understanding of trust in the C2C environment. Laboratory experiments (manipulating the trust arguments in “about me” page) and online questionnaire surveys (measuring the subjects’ responses regarding structural assurance, perceived risk, disposition to trust, trust, and purchase intention) were conducted to collect necessary data. The results suggest that benevolent sellers significantly influence the trust of bidders. Analysis also finds that structural assurance is the most influential predictor of trust, which significantly influences a buyer's intention to purchase. In addition, disposition to trust is a significant predictor of trusting belief, whereas perceived Web risk does not predict purchase intention.

Tour Booking: Do Travelers Respond to Tourism Accreditation and Codes of Ethics Initiatives?

ABSTRACTTourism and hospitality organizations are spending more time and money on corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, but at the same time not fully understanding how such initiatives enhance travelers’ responses. This study investigates the impact of two CSR initiatives that have been widely adopted by many travel organizations: tourism accreditation and codes of ethics. A large-scale survey collected data on how potential travelers responded to an online tour brochure. The results showed that both accreditation and code of ethics information in a brochure have significant but varying impacts on perceived tour value, trust, and tour booking intention.

Contextual Influences on Online Trust Formation

User trust has been identified as a key success factor for online services. Research has come a long way in identifying antecedents and elements of online trust. Yet trust research is largely focused on the particular context of e-commerce services. Trust formation has been conceptualized as context-specific: Users take the specific risks and benefits of a transaction into consideration when forming trusting beliefs and intentions. Since different business models are associated with specific risks and benefits, we propose that trust formation differs based on the context of different business models. We test this proposition by analyzing trust formation in the contexts of both the e-commerce and social networking business models. Based on a survey of 1’666 German Internet users, we identify paths of trust formation leading from trust cues to trusting beliefs and trusting intentions. We find that the pertinent paths in fact differ between the e-commerce and social networking business models.

Trust and trustworthiness: conceptual distinctions and their implications for natural resources management

Few natural resource management (NRM) studies discriminate between trust and trustworthiness. However, this approach, which combines the attitude of one actor with the characteristics of another actor, is common in the organisational management literature. Our case study, set in a wildfire management context in Australia, sought to explore: (1) how community members and NRM staff defined trust and described trustworthiness; (2) how these trust definitions did, or did not, reflect conceptualisations in the literature; and, (3) whether explicitly differentiating between trust and trustworthiness is useful in an NRM context. Our findings suggest that participants defined trust in three main ways: as ‘having a good relationship’; as ‘being able to rely on others’ in a one-way manner; and, as ‘a relationship where parties rely on one another’ in a reciprocal manner. Our findings also suggest that participants differentiated these trust definitions from trustworthiness, that is, from the characteristics and actions which made an individual or agency worthy of trust. These findings suggest that it is useful to differentiate trust from trustworthiness, because it allows NRM managers and researchers to better understand both the trusting intentions of community members and the characteristics of the agency which contribute to that trust.

Incorporating trust-in-technology into Expectation Disconfirmation Theory

Continued use of strategic information systems is not always a given. This study proposes that users’ trust in the system may influence their satisfaction and continuance intention. While trust has been found to have strategic implications for understanding consumers’ technology usage, relatively little research has examined how trust’s influence operates over time. To gain insight into trust’s influence on strategic system usage over time and to explain how trust relates to satisfaction and continuance intention, we integrate trust-related constructs with the Complete Expectation Disconfirmation Theory (EDT) Model. Our results demonstrate that trust plays a central role in the EDT process and that the EDT process helps explain trust’s role more completely. The study shows that technology trusting expectations influence trusting intention through performance, disconfirmation, and satisfaction. We also show that technology trusting intention adds predictive power to EDT’s satisfaction construct as together they predict usage continuance intention. For research, our results provide a strong combined EDT and trust theory base for future studies that examine expectation management and system development projects. For practice, our study informs systems implementation strategies for technologies that have fewer human-like characteristics and more technology-like characteristics. Our findings underscore that managers need to adopt an EDT process-based view when seeking to build trust, satisfaction, and continuance intention in strategically important information systems.

Using Sustainability Reports as a Method of Cause-Related Marketing for Competitive Advantage

This study explores the impact of sustainability reporting on consumer behavior. In this study, the authors measure consumer perception and behavior using the constructs value congruence, trust, loyalty, and purchase intention. To test otheur research model and hypotheses they collected survey data during an online experimental simulation. During the simulation participants were presented with information about a fictional retailer of digital music, movies, and MP3 players. Consumer behavior data were collected from participants before and after presenting information about the sustainability report of the fictitious retailer. The results of the study suggest sustainability reporting has a significant and positive impact on consumer behavior. Therefore, it may prove to be an effective method of cause-related marketing used to attract conscientious consumers.

The Antecedents of Buyers' Perceived Justice in Online Markets

The success of a business largely depends upon customers' intentions to continue to purchase, but this can be a challenge for vendors in online markets. This study proposes a model which identifies an initial set of justice antecedents and evaluates their relation to perceived justice, trust, and repurchase intention in online markets. The theoretical model is tested by using structural equation modeling on a data set of 424 buyers in Yahoo! Kimo online auction market. The results demonstrate that three dimensions of justice (distributive, procedural, and interactional) are positively and significantly related to trust, which in turn affects buyers' intention to repurchase. Moreover, among the three dimensions of justice judgments, distributive justice and interactional justice are relatively more important than procedural justice in predicting buyers' trust in sellers. In terms of the antecedents of justice, this study provides evidence that product quality and delivery performance are significantly related to distributive justice, while information quality and contact channel are important antecedents of procedural justice. This study also finds that responsiveness is important in enhancing buyers' judgments of interactional justice.
