This study aims to examine the concept of spiritual intelligence and emotional intelligence according to Dr. Ary Ginanjar Agustian in the book Emotional Spiritual Quotient (ESQ) 165. This research is a library research with a qualitative descriptive approach. The data collection uses documentation techniques sourced from the book Emotional Spiritual Quotient (ESQ) 165 by Dr. Ary Ginanjar Agustian, also scientific literature and journals. The data analysis technique uses a qualitative descriptive analysis technique with data reduction steps, data presentation and drawing conclusions. The results of the research show that the concept of spiritual intelligence and emotional intelligence according to Dr. Ary Ginanjar Agustian in the book Emotional Spiritual Quotient (ESQ) 165. is material about leadership training and personality development in forming strong characters that combines the concepts of intellectual intelligence (IQ), emotional intelligence (EQ) and spiritual intelligence (SQ) in an integrated and transcendental manner in efforts to improve performance and productivity. In the ESQ way 165 book aimed at opening the gate to the heart dimension, it is found that basic values: honesty, justice, togetherness, creativity, true discipline, already exist in humans and are also basic human goals. "Islamic Medicine": A true discipline for the 21st century or quackery?

The purpose of this review is to consider the position of "Islamic Medicine" and whether it is a legitimate form of clinical care or quackery. The analysis is based on published work together with an identification of themes derived from testimonials on practitioners' websites, as well as a consideration of how such therapies are considered in medical search engines. "Islamic Medicine" covers Traditional or Yunani practice, Prophetic Medicine, Hijama and Ruqya. Their origins are discussed and, subsequently, current-day practice and its relationship to allopathic medicine. Reasons for antagonism to modern medicine are considered and the absence of a rational basis for many of the views expressed. In the case of Yunani medicine, its pre-Islamic origins are identified together with the impact of anti-colonialism and the potential role of clerics in wishing to distance medical care from Galenic concepts. In the case of Hijama, the absence of effective training and regulation and its promotion as a "lost sunna" are discussed alongside claims for miraculous cures. The movement of Ruqyah away from Qur'anic recitation in support of the sick towards a popularised approach to dealing with magic and possession is considered, together with consequential adverse publicity in the media. The consequences of a failure to adopt training practices for Yunani medicine, as recommended by the WHO, are identified. Accredited detailed courses monitored by external statutory regulatory agencies, based in institutions committed to providing the best healthcare, and supporting research would allow "Islamic Medicine" to become a significant role player in contemporary clinical practice and stop present-day quackery.

The vision of nursing provided by Léonie Chaptal: a strategic mistake in the development of nursing science in France ?

The issue of the development of the discipline displayed by nursing sciences in France is crucial, especially since the Law of Modernization of the Health System has established a legal framework for advanced practice since 2016. This article presents a discussion on the important role that Léonie Chaptal has played in the development of nursing care in France, based on a purely professional vision, guaranteeing the subordination of the nurses to the medical physicians the in the spirit of the law of November 30, 1892 which had established a stranglehold of medical profession on health. We have drawn from this discussion some lessons that we consider essential for the future development of a true discipline of nursing in France, in the context of the deep organizational transformation initiated by the health system.

Statistical Engineering: An Idea Whose Time Has Come?

ABSTRACTSeveral authors, including the American Statistical Association (ASA) guidelines for undergraduate statistics education (American Statistical Association Undergraduate Guidelines Workgroup), have noted the challenges facing statisticians when attacking large, complex, and unstructured problems, as opposed to well-defined textbook problems. Clearly, the standard paradigm of selecting the one “correct” statistical method for such problems is not sufficient; a new paradigm is needed. Statistical engineering has been proposed as a discipline that can provide a viable paradigm to attack such problems, used in conjunction with sound statistical science. Of course, to develop as a true discipline, statistical engineering must be clearly defined and articulated. Further, a well-developed underlying theory is needed, one that would prove helpful in addressing such large, complex, and unstructured problems. The purpose of this expository article is to more clearly articulate the current state of statistical engineering, and make a case for why it merits further study by the profession as a means of addressing such problems. We conclude with a “call to action.”

Disciplining the graphic design discipline: The role of external engagement, mediating meaning, and transparency as catalysts for change

Abstract The singular mission of graphic design schools is to prepare students for a life in professional practice, primarily as creative form-givers of design artefacts and communications. Such a practice-oriented monoculture in the curriculum leaves the field lacking the knowledge-building capacity for producing a diverse body of disciplinary scholarship by academic researchers – who are sorely needed if graphic design is to ever emerge as a true discipline. Meanwhile, several stakeholder organizations such as the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) and Icograda, among others, have challenged design education to address shifts underway in the field towards a more user-centric, evidence-based practice. In the United States, a few graduate programmes have taken steps to bridge graphic design’s knowledge gap by accommodating different pathways into the field that focus on research skills. This article presents findings from a twelve-month grounded theory study investigating the teaching environments of four such programmes, illuminating some of the factors that enabled a programme’s ability to adapt their approaches to curricula design and pedagogic strategies. An integrated model – a grounded theory – is proposed that emphasizes three core categories emerging from the data – External engagement, Mediating meaning and Transparency. Programme strategies that informed these three categories highlight numerous processes shaping faculty relationships, as well as the role of the teaching environment in coordinating between internal pedagogic objectives and external changes in the wider landscape of the graphic design field. Specifically, these processes promoted sense-making, engagement and transformation in the four programmes that participated in the study. This report aims to increase awareness about faculty beliefs and behaviours that affect graphic design education’s ability to remain relevant.

Confusion Concerning the Use of Maqasid Al-Shari’ah in some Social Issues in Malaysia

Social issues relating to the Muslim ummah’s permissibility of polygamy for males and obligatory veiling (hijab) for females have become polemic in Malaysia. This polemic is dealt with by using the argument of maqasid al-shari’ah (purposefulness of shariah). However, there is much confusion in presenting the argument of maqasid al-shari’ah whereby the role of reason is given priority over considerations of explicit meaning of the text or evidence in shariah when a social issue is submitted. Hence, this paper explains the confusion in order that any form of resolution to social issues is in accordance with the spirit of al-Quran and Hadith. The method used in this study is document analysis. Among the documents used is, The Relationship Between Islamic Human Rights And The Maqasidic Approach, Muslim Women's Quest for Equality: Between Islamic Law and Feminism, Feminist Movement, Gender Equality and Religious Understanding and Dawabit al-Maslahah fi al-Sharicah al-Islamiyyah (The Guidelines for Public Interest in Islamic Shariah). Research results find that the dawabit (parameters) control the application of maqasid al-shari’ah (the ultimate objectives or goals of Shariah). This is because dawabit plays a role in balancing between proof of Shariah text or evidence in partial (juz’iyy) form and maqasid al-shari’ah in general or universal (kulliyy) form. These dawabit (guidelines) are compiled to ensure that the application of maqasid al-shari’ah fulfils the true discipline of jurisprudence in the context of textual interpretation of al-Quran and al-Sunnah when issuing rulings extracted from these sources. Dental Hygiene and Research: Irrevocably Connected

Although remarkable growth has occurred in the dental hygiene research arena, an increased emphasis on research development will facilitate the designation of dental hygiene as a true discipline. BackgroundDental hygienists have participated in research for nearly 100 years. Support for research development has increased due to contributions of the American Dental Hygienists' Association and other grant monies that have funded seminal educational endeavors to elevate the research skills of dental hygienists. Dental hygiene initiated research endeavors, the advent of doctoral degree programs in dental hygiene, expansion of the dental hygiene body of knowledge, and efforts toward interprofessional collaboration continue to elevate the profession of dental hygiene while addressing the oral health needs of the public. MethodsThe research focus in dental hygiene is reviewed. Landmark events that have supported research endeavors are described and examples of historically important global contributions made by dental hygienists are chronicled. ConclusionsFurther development of a body of dental hygiene research will help position the profession alongside other academically recognized health care disciplines. A small, dedicated group of dental hygienists have worked toward advancing the profession in this way, but additional growth is essential if dental hygiene is to be considered a true discipline. One such initiative on the near horizon is the doctoral degree in dental hygiene.

Remarks on the Second Pascalian Anthropology: Thought as Alienation

The title of this study, “Remarks on the Second Pascalian Anthropology,” assumes that Pascal’s Pensees offers us not one but two kinds of pensees, or thoughts, concerning human nature. Considered from the point of view of the history of anthropology, these two pensees—both discovered in this unique book, which for a long time has been called Pensees— appear to be a theoretical Janus. The first anthropology belongs to the thousand-year-old apologetic tradition; it is centered on the past, that is, the past of the history of spirituality, like the past of the history of philosophy. The other pensee, concerning human nature, remarkably anticipates the philosophical analysis—which appears much later than Pascal—that considers man in his existence and in his finitude. To be more precise, the first Pascalian pensee of man deserves to be called “anthropology” only if by this term we understand the neologism that Schulphilosophie invented almost at the same time as psychology, which concerns itself with ancient considerations on the dignity of man and his nature. In fact, the word “anthropology” did not qualify as a true discipline in the seventeenth century but did in the eighteenth century. From French to English: Some Observations on Patterns of Onomastic Changes in North America

AbstractName studies have emerged as a true discipline of convergence, drawing on and bringing together the methodologies of several disciplines, mostly in the social sciences and the humanities. In this cross-fertilization process, there has been at times a tendency to forget that the core element of onomastic studies, the proper name, is fundamentally a linguistic unit belonging to a given language system, and therefore subject to the rules that govern the evolution of that system. Here, the sociolinguistic context underlying the transformation of names from one linguistic tradition to another is examined. More specifically, this paper deals with the evolution of French placenames in English-dominant areas of North America, and proposes a linguistically-based typology to account for such an evolution.

At Last, Neuropsychology's Coming Of Age

In his forward to Clinical Neuropsychology Arthur Benton comments, “More aptly than might have been anticipated, clinical neuropsychology is coming of age. I mean by this that it is evolving from what was largely a set of assessment procedures coupled with a diagnostic inference to be drawn from them into a true discipline, conscious of its conceptual bases and concerned with the cognitive and neuromechanisms that mediate the behavior of normal individuals and patients with brain disease.” Dr. Benton's assessment catches the thrust of the book well. It concerns itself with the development and maturation of the field, its relationship to sister disciplines such as behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry, focuses in on important practice and credentialing issues, and provides cogent reviews of progress in many important content areas.

AHISTORICITY REVISITED

In our reply to Margaret Thomas's article “Programmatic ahistoricity in second language acquisition theory,” we first review pertinent literature, concluding that historical awareness is evident in SLA, though it is not as far-reaching as Thomas would like it to be. We then argue that the attitude of most scholars in SLA toward the past is reasonable given that no significant work in SLA from antiquity has been discovered—by Thomas or anyone else—and that if such work exists Thomas has the burden to bring it to light before declaring the field guilty of ahistoricity. We consider various ways to define the field of SLA, arguing that it should be defined theoretically first, and historically second. We claim that the point at which SLA separated itself from language teaching is a logical point from which to date the beginnings of SLA as a true discipline. We consider and reject Thomas's comparison of SLA and its history to various other scientific disciplines and their histories, arguing that these disciplines have true milestones to point to in the distant past, whereas SLA does not. Although we agree with Thomas that a general awareness of the history of philosophy and science is beneficial for scholars in all fields, we make a sharp division between that history and the history of SLA proper. We conclude by arguing that respect for the field of SLA can come only through sound scientific progress, not by appeals to history.

Sylviane Léoni : French Rhetoric. Classical rhetoric, embodying a system of learning which is no longer accepted, is a true discipline which drew its meaning and coherence from its close relationship with philosophy, Aristotelian dialectics, topics, poetics and so on. These relationships, thanks to which rhetoric became an art in the classical sense, gradually dissolved in the 17th and 18th Centuries under the influence of Cartesianism and English empiricism. Nevertheless, the prestige of the classical tradition, force of habit and the institutional power backing up the teaching of the art of persuasion slowed down the decline of this discipline which, contrary to what is often said, was not limited in the 18th Century to the production of stylistic effects and the study of figures and tropes.

Probing beneath the surface: Review of a decade's futures work

This article looks back over a decade of futures work. It looks at the development of critical futures study, at several key premises and some outcomes in terms of teaching, research and other products. From this perspective aspects of the wider field are then briefly discussed. One proposition is that futures study and research do constitute a true discipline (or metadiscipline) for scholarly enquiry. While the field still suffers from earlier weaknesses, it has continued to develop and is likely to achieve wider acceptance and application. A second proposition is that for such acceptance to take place it will need to incorporate approaches which deal with continuity and change at a range of levels. The need to communicate difficult issues clearly is a continuing challenge. A critical futures method provides some of the necessary tools.

Assessment of Directions and Opportunities in Current and Future Materials Education

There is considerable excitement and some turmoil in undergraduate and graduate education in the broad field of materials, as well as in its subfields of metallurgy, ceramics, and polymers. While the reasons are many, the underlying driver is the growth in the visibility and diversity of a young field evolving rapidly into a true discipline, much like chemical engineering and biology from their early roots mainly in chemistry.The University Materials Council (UMC), the group representing accredited materials departments has had a longstanding, obvious interest in education and has been actively involved in assessing current and future directions. More recently, a comprehensive study under the auspices of the National Research Council (the Materials Science and Engineering Study), has been undertaken to develop a unified view of recent progress and new directions in materials science and engineering (MSE), and to assess future opportunities and needs. As part of this ambitious endeavor, a panel on education (Panel 5) was established with the following charges:• To investigate and document existing human resources in MSE;• To identify future directions of education in MSE, including education in and out of materials departments;• To identify needs and opportunities for increasing interdisciplinarity in MSE; and• To identify needs and opportunities in lifelong education.

The Integral Method of Literary Scholarship: Theses for Discussion

S SUBTITLE and length indicate, this is not an elaborate exposition of the theory of a new method, but an attempt to stimulate the discussion of problems the importance of which can hardly be denied by any literary historian or critic.1 The theses are here formulated in a deliberately radical form in order to force the problems to their final consequences and to instigate a lively reaction-which is far sounder than apathy. Like every theory, this one has its strengths and weaknesses, its assertions more or less evident and clear, and formulations that need further exposition, elaboration, or even revision. It is to be hoped that a general discussion will clarify our ends and contribute to the establishing of a really adequate literary discipline.2 The irony and even contempt with which the work of literary historians is treated by scholars in the physical sciences is partly justified by our lack of generally acknowledged methodological principles, by the absence of a strictly defined subject and a consequent lack of defined ends. These deficiencies must be acknowledged serious, for there can be no true discipline without a subject, a method, and an aim. Let us take first the problem of the nature of literature and the subject of literary scholarship. By way of definition, we have and still get the most inexact, vague, and indeed fantastic statements. For Herder, literature means all works in which the spiritual physiognomy of a nation is reflected; for Friedrich Schlegel, it means those arts and sciences of which the subject is man and life. For Carriere, literary history is the history of ideals; for Hettner, it is the history of ideas and their scientific [sic!] and artistic forms; for W.
