Alkyd nanocomposite coatings based on waste pet glicolyzates and modified silica nanoparticles

Synthesis of high-performance alkyd resins (ARs) based on waste poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) glycolyzates is presented. PET glycolyzates were synthesized by catalytic depolymerization with trimethylolpropane (TMP) and trimethylolethane (TME) and used as replacement of polyhydroxylic component during the ARs synthesis. The obtained glycolyzates and produced ARs were analyzed using FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and acid, iodine, and hydroxyl value were determined. Rheological properties of the synthesized ARs, as well as, thickness, adhesion, hardness and the gloss values were determined. All synthesized ARs show good adhesion and hardness and the gloss values are greater than 95%. The influence of the addition of vinyl modified nanosilica Aerosil® R380, functionalized with 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TMSPM) and tris(2-methoxyethoxy)(vinyl)silane (TMEVS), on the mechanical and anticorrosive characteristics of the prepared nanocomposite coatings, based on ARs, was investigated.

Development and characterisation of HDPE/EPDM-g-TMEVS blends for mechanical and morphological properties for engineering applications

A novel graft copolymer of tris (2-methoxy eth- oxy) vinylsilane (TMEVS) onto ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) has been developed by grafting TMEVS using dicumyl peroxide as an initiator (EPDM-g- TMVES)in a Brabender plasticorder. Grafting of TMEVS onto EPDM has been ascertained using FTIR. Suitable interfacial compatibilizer was synthesized by grafting of HDPE with glycidyl methacrylate (HDPE-g-GMA) with benzoyl peroxide as initiator. The EPDM-grafted-TMEVS developed has been blended with different weight percent- age of HDPE, EPDM-g-TMEVS and nanoclay. The nano- clay was varied from 0 % to 10 % and with incorporation of compatibilizer and without compatibilizer in a brabender plasticorder. Different blend systems were prepared with compatibilizer and without compatibilizer with varying nanoclay and their thermal,mechnical and morphological properties were studied.

Studies on mechanical and morphological behavior of hybrid nanoclay‐reinforced EPDM‐g‐TMEVS/PS blends

AbstractA new copolymer of tris(2‐methoxyethoxy) vinylsilane (TMEVS)‐grafted ethylene–propylene–diene elastomer (EPDM‐g‐TMEVS) has been developed by grafting of TMEVS onto EPDM by using dicumylperoxide (DCP) initiator. The linear polystyrene blends (EPDM‐g‐TMEVS/PS) based on EPDM‐g‐TMEVS have been synthesized with varying weight percentages of polystyrene in a twin‐screw extruder. In a similar manner, the dynamically vulcanized and nanoclay‐reinforced polystyrene blends have also been developed using DCP and organically modified montmorillonite clay separately by means of a twin‐screw extruder. The grafting of TMEVS onto EPDM at allylic position present in the third monomer of EPDM has been confirmed by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy. The effect of silane‐grafted EPDM and concentration of nanoclay on mechanical properties of polystyrene blends has been studied as per ASTM standards. The morphological behavior of these blends has been investigated using scanning electron microscope. It was observed that the incorporation of silane‐grafted EPDM enhanced the impact strength and the percentage elongation of linear‐ and dynamically vulcanized blends. However, the values of tensile strength, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and hardness of the blends were found to be decreasing with the increase of silane‐grafted EPDM. In the case of nanoclay‐reinforced polystyrene blends, the values of impact strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and hardness were increased with an increase in the concentration of nanoclay. Studies on Comparison of Electrical Properties of Nanoclay Reinforced EPDM-g-TMEVS/PS and EPDM-g-TMEVS/PMMA Blends

A novel graft copolymer of tris(2-methoxyethoxy) vinylsilane grafted ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM-g-TMEVS) has been developed by grafting of tris(2-methoxyethoxy) vinylsilane (TMEVS) onto EPDM using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as radical initiator in a twin screw extruder. The linear polystyrene and polymethylmethacrylate blends based on EPDM-g-TMEVS have been synthesized with varying weight percentages of polystyrene (PS) and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) by melt mixing in a twin-screw extruder. The dynamically vulcanized and nanoclay reinforced blends of EPDM-g-TMEVS/PS and EPDM-g-TMEVS/ PMMA were developed by using DCP and organically modified montmorillonite clay in a twin-screw extruder. The linear, dynamically vulcanized and nanoclay reinforced EPDM-g-TMEVS/PS and EPDM-g-TMEVS/PMMA blends have been characterized by different experimental studies to assess their suitability for cable insulation applications. The effect of incorporation of TMEVS grafted EPDM on electrical properties such as volume resistivity, surface resistivity, arc resistance and dielectric strength of EPDM-g-TMEVS/PS and EPDM-g-TMEVS/ PMMA blends have been studied. The values of volume resistivity, surface resistivity, arc resistance and dielectric strength are increased with increasing percentage concentration of EPDM-g-TMEVS due to the presence of -Si-O-Si-linkages. The blends filled with nanoclay exhibit improved electrical properties due to the presence of inorganic moiety, which in turn enhance the insulation behavior. However, among the hybrid polystyrene and polymethylmethacrylate thermoplastic blends studied in the present investigation, EPDM-g-TMEVS/PS blends possess better insulating behavior than that of EPDM-g-TMEVS/PMMA blends due to thermally stable -Si-O-Si- linkages, hydrophobic and non-polarnature. The XRD studies were also carried out to confirm the formation of nanoclay reinforced blends. From the results, it was ascertained that the clay intercalation occurred in the case of polystyrene blends whereas clay intercalation with some degree of exfoliation occurred in the case of PMMA blends.

Studies on grafting of tris(2‐methoxyethoxy)vinylsilane onto ethylene‐propylene‐diene terpolymer

AbstractNew graft copolymer was prepared by incorporating tris(2‐methoxyethoxy)vinylsilane (TMEVS) on ethylene‐propylene‐diene terpolymer (EPDM) by using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as initiator, in Haake Rheocord 90 torque rheometer. The effect of EPDM concentration, TMEVS concentration, reaction time, reaction temperature and initiator concentration on the graft co polymerization was studied. The grafting efficiency of TMEVS on EPDM was confirmed by Fourier Transform infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopy. The grafting efficiency increased with increase in the silane concentration upto 6% by weight. The grafting efficiency decreased beyond 6% by weight due to homopolymerization of TMEVS and non‐availability of carbon–carbon double bond in the EPDM terpolymer. The thermal properties of peroxide cured EPDM and hot water cured EPDM‐g‐TMEVS were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis. The results show thermal properties like degradation tempertature and glass transition temperature of the EPDM‐g‐TMEVS were increased due to introduction of TMEVS on to EPDM terpolymer as well as the formation of thermally stable three‐dimensional network. Ionically Conductive Thin Polymer Films Prepared by Plasma Polymerization: V . Preparation and Characterization of Solid Polymer Electrolyte Composed of Plasma Polymerized Complex

Ultrathin, uniform, pinhole‐free solid polymer electrolyte films of approximately 1 μm thickness were prepared by the complexation of plasma‐polymerized tris(2‐methoxyethoxy)vinylsilane (TMVS) with . The results of FT‐IR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR measurements indicate that the structure of the plasma polymer is very similar to poly(TMVS), except for the presence of a small amount of what is probably a cyclic group impurity. The glass transition temperature and ionic conductivity of the solid polymer electrolyte depend on the content, and the variation of the ionic conductivity with temperature can be described exactly by using a WLF type of equation. Room temperature conductivities greater than 10−6 S cm−1 (102 Ω cm2 resistance per unit area) were observed.
