Vision-Autocorrect: A Self-Adapting Approach towards Relieving Eye-Strain Using Facial-Expression Recognition

The last two years have seen a rapid rise in the duration of time that both adults and children spend on screens, driven by the recent COVID-19 health pandemic. A key adverse effect is digital eye strain (DES). Recent trends in human-computer interaction and user experience have proposed voice or gesture-guided designs that present more effective and less intrusive automated solutions. These approaches inspired the design of a solution that uses facial expression recognition (FER) techniques to detect DES and autonomously adapt the application to enhance the user’s experience. This study sourced and adapted popular open FER datasets for DES studies, trained convolutional neural network models for DES expression recognition, and designed a self-adaptive solution as a proof of concept. Initial experimental results yielded a model with an accuracy of 77% and resulted in the adaptation of the user application based on the FER classification results. We also provide the developed application, model source code, and adapted dataset used for further improvements in the area. Future work should focus on detecting posture, ergonomics, or distance from the screen.

Human-Computer Interaction Virtual Training System for College Students’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education

A recent trend in human-computer interaction has facilitated content production, such as innovation and information growth through intelligent systems, enabling unqualified users to describe a machine’s behaviour through visual programming. However, the difficulty could become similar to the standard coding techniques as the number of elements to be managed increases. Entrepreneurial education is defined as a collection of formalized lessons that advise, train, and educate all people who want to participate in socio-economic development through a project that promotes knowledge of entrepreneurship to advance the business. Hence, in this paper, the Human-computer interaction-based Entrepreneurship learning platform (HCI-ELP) has been proposed to boost student quality of life by enhancing self-confidence and changing the learning timeframe. HCI provides several promising implications for integrating knowledge management approaches, taking advantage of computer-supported interactive learning from entrepreneurship learning platforms. The suggested approach recommends collaboration to learn for students’ opinions on learning developed through a questionnaire’s tasks. Thus, the experimental results show that HCI-ELP achieves the highest performance rate to 97.66% and enhances student interaction in completing the task to improve curriculum development.

DIGITAL Al-QUR’AN LEARNING BOOK TO IMPROVE READING AND WRITING SKILLS AMONG NOVICE ARABIC LEARNERS

Purpose of the study: This research aims to develop a digital Al-Qur’an learning book to improve novice learners’ Arabic reading and writing skills. It employs research and development methods and takes a procedural model, which is descriptive and has clear guidelines for developing the product.
 Methodology: The steps include several procedures: planning, implementation, and evaluation. The data consist of preliminary study data and try-out data. The data analysis covers data presentation, reduction, verification, and concluding. On the other hand, the data in this research had been elaborated using the content analysis to find the appropriate substance of Al-Qur’an digital. The methodology in this research also used some modeling of new trends in human-computer interaction by Macías (2009). In this case, Macías developed interfaces to facilitate the main interaction modes. In this research interface of digital Qur’an, online and offline, tried to facilitate the novice learners’ Arabic reading and writing process. The interface also related to the “word order” which had been used the model of Qur’anic words.
 Main Findings: The final product from this research is a digital-based book for learning to read Al-Qur’an, which is equipped with reading and writing exercises and is suitable for students at the beginner-level. The strengths and limitations of the digital-based book are discussed.
 Applications of this study: The result of this research can be used for Al-Qur’an educational institutions, both teachers and students.
 Novelty/Originality of this study: The model development of the digital Al-Qur’an learning book is presented comprehensively and completely.

Human Computer Interaction Trends in Healthcare: An Update

As the medical community evolves, so does its reliance on technology. With the rise of robotic surgery systems, the use of computers in tracking patient in-processing, and now mandates surrounding Electronic Health Records (EHR), it has become prudent to examine these systems as part of their larger sociotechnical systems. As such, an increase in Human Computer Interaction (HCI) research in healthcare setting has been seen. A prior trend analysis examined this phenomenon by analyzing specific areas of HCI-healthcare published as HFES proceedings from 1999 until 2009. This paper updates that analysis to explore trends in healthcare proceedings published by HFES from 2009 until 2017, during which time the Affordable Healthcare Act was passed and the HFES healthcare symposia were introduced and hosted separately from the primary annual HFES meetings. Changes in trends and their impact are discussed.

An Embodied Approach to Designing Meaningful Experiences with Ambient Media

With the emerging trend in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) shifting focus from usability to facilitating meaningful experiences, the notion of embodied cognition provides designers and researchers with valuable insight into how the body–mind interplay can influence meaning-making during embodied experiences. This paper presents an approach to designing embodied interactions with ambient media. Building on theories of embodied cognition and cognitive semantics, we developed our approach by conducting a series of studies, including an interpretive case analysis, empirical research into audience experience and design ideations, as well as designerly reflections on design. Our findings showed that an embodied approach is applicable for designing meaningful interactions, by coupling bodily engagement with metaphorical meanings. Design implications and future work are also presented.

Reducing Risk of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in Collegiate Music Ensembles Using Ambient Technology

Student musicians are at risk for noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) as they develop skills and perform during instructional activities. Studies using longitudinal dosimeter data show that pedagogical procedures and instructor behaviors are highly predictive of NIHL risk, thus implying the need for innovative approaches to increase instructor competency in managing instructional activities without interfering with artistic and academic freedom. Ambient information systems, an emerging trend in human-computer interaction that infuses psychological behavioral theories into technologies, can help construct informative risk-regulating systems. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of introducing an ambient information system into the ensemble setting. The system used two ambient displays and a counterbalanced within-subjects treatment study design with six jazz ensemble instructors to determine if the system could induce a behavior change that alters trends in measures resulting from dosimeter data. This study assessed efficacy using time series analysis to determine changes in eight statistical measures of behavior over a 9-wk period. Analysis showed that the system was effective, as all instructors showed changes in a combination of measures. This study is in an important step in developing non-interfering technology to reduce NIHL among academic musicians.

Semantics-Based Intelligent Human-Computer Interaction

A recent trend in human-computer interaction is to ease the creation of content such as apps and games via intelligent systems, allowing nonskilled users to define a given system's behavior through visual programming or simplified metalanguages. However, when the number of elements to be controlled increases, the complexity could become comparable to that of traditional coding strategies. This article addresses this issue by proposing a framework for automatically configuring a system's behavior based on user input and context information. Framework effectiveness has been tested in a game-creation scenario and used for automatically mapping user commands on virtual character actions based on a natural language description of the game scene. The use of semantics-based mapping reduces the effort and complexity linked with the configuration of the interaction logic, thus decreasing the number of commands needed for controlling the characters. The Web extra includes the questionnaire and full catalogue of descriptions collected.

Heat Based Odors Delivery Apparatus for Interactive Game Playing

Scent delivery systems or what are known as olfactory displays has been the most recent trend in human computer interaction, control and automation, virtual reality, augmented reality, e-commerce and many other fields in the computer world. These devices have the ability to generate smell combinations for some digital items in the computer virtual world. The idea is to deliver additional perception (olfactory perception) to the user to enrich his/her indulgence while interacting with the computer. The proposed olfactory display is similar to this concept but greatly differ in many aspects, using laser based atomization method to produce enough sudden heat to generate odors that cannot be generated using chemical materials these odors are smoke, gun powder, wood milling, cigarettes smoking, plastic melting and Incense. All olfactory displays researchers avoid involving these types of odors in their studies due to the difficulty of the generation and control of such odors and the absence of their correct and precise generation using chemical materials. The proposed system will provide a way of generating such odors while interactive game is being played by a user with minimum impact on the environment to avoid adaption to the user's olfactory system and polluting the environment that the user occupies.

Applications of airborne ultrasound in human–computer interaction

Airborne ultrasound is a rapidly developing subfield within human–computer interaction (HCI). Touchless ultrasonic interfaces and pen tracking systems are part of recent trends in HCI and are gaining industry momentum. This paper aims to provide the background and overview necessary to understand the capabilities of ultrasound and its potential future in human–computer interaction. The latest developments on the ultrasound transducer side are presented, focusing on capacitive micro-machined ultrasonic transducers, or CMUTs. Their introduction is an important step toward providing real, low-cost multi-sensor array and beam-forming options. We also provide a unified mathematical framework for understanding and analyzing algorithms used for ultrasound detection and tracking for some of the most relevant applications.

Recent trends in human computer interaction have focused on representations based on physical reality [4, 5, 6, 8]. The idea is to provide richer, more intuitive handles for control and manipulation compared to traditional graphical user interfaces (GUIs) using a mouse. This trend underscores the need to examine the concept of manipulation and to further understand what we want to manipulate versus what we can easily manipulate. Implicit in this is the notion that the bias of the UI is often incompatible with user needs.The main goal of UI design is to reduce complexity while augmenting the ability of users to get their work done. A fundamental belief underlying our research is that complexity lies not only in what is purchased from the software and hardware manufacturers, but also in what the user creates with it. It is not just a question of making buttons and menus easier to learn and more efficient to use. It is also a question of "Given that I've created this surface in this way, how can it now be modified to achieve my current design objective?" (The observation is that how the user created the surface in the first place will affect the answer to the question.) Our thesis is that appropriate design of the system can minimize both kinds of complexity: that inherent in accessing the functionality provided by the vendor, and that created by the user. The literature focuses on the former. In what follows, we investigate some of the issues in achieving the latter. In so doing, we structure our discussion around questions of compatibility.
