Clindamycin in the treatment of soft-tissue infections.

Clindamycin phosphate, a parenteral preparation of the antibiotic clindamycin, was used to treat 131 patients with documented bacterial infections. Clindamycin therapy effectively eradicated 81% of the infections. There were no apparent systemic toxic effects. Injections of clindamycin phosphate were satisfactorily tolerated for as long as three weeks. Resistant Staphylococcus aureus developed in 8% of the cases. Thus, parenterally administered clindamycin phosphate appears to be safe and effective in treating serious surgical infections due to gram-positive organisms and shows promise in treating anaerobic infections.

Treatment of Soft-Tissue Infection With Cephalexin

Cephalexin monohydrate, an orally administered cephalosporin C antibiotic, was evaluated in the treatment of 25 patients with soft-tissue infections of sufficient severity to warrant antibiotic therapy. All strains of Staphylococcus aureus, both penicillin-sensitive and penicillinresistant, were inhibited by 12.5μg or less of cephalexin monohydrate per milliliter. These concentrations of cephalexin were usually achieved in the serum one to two hours after a 500-mg oral dose and correlated with serum inhibitory activity against the infecting microorganism. Excellent clinical response and elimination of the pathogen were noted within seven days after initiation of therapy in all but one patient. Side effects were severe diarrhea in one patient which necessitated discontinuation of cephalexin therapy after the first day; eosinophilia in one patient; and a slight rise in the value of serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase in one patient.

The clinical trial of streptomycin pantothenate in the treatment of soft tissue infections

Didrothenate was the antibiotic employed in the treatment of 116 patients with soft tissue infections, some of whom were managed on an ambulatory basis. Surgical intervention was required in fewer instances and was usually of lesser magnitude than ordinarily employed in similar cases. The intramuscular administration of the antibiotic was acceptable to the patients and the therapeutic response to this medication was excellent. In susceptibility tests on the microorganisms recovered in this study more strains were found sensitive to the didrothenate than to streptomycin, indicating that the possibility of the emergence of resistant bacterial strains is decreased. None of the organisms recovered proved more sensitive to streptomycin sulfate than to the streptomycin pantothenate preparation.
