Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease: Updated examination of mechanisms, pathophysiology, treatment, and association with gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) is an inflammatory condition in the laryngopharynx and upper aerodigestive tract mucosa caused by reflux of stomach contents beyond the esophagus. LPRD commonly presents with sym-ptoms such as hoarseness, cough, sore throat, a feeling of throat obstruction, excessive throat mucus. This complex condition is thought to involve both reflux and reflex mechanisms, but a clear understanding of its molecular mechanisms is still lacking. Currently, there is no standardized diagnosis or treatment protocol. Therapeutic strategies for LPRD mainly include lifestyle modifications, proton pump inhibitors and endoscopic surgery. This paper seeks to provide a comprehensive overview of the existing literature regarding the mechanisms, patho-physiology and treatment of LPRD. We also provide an in-depth exploration of the association between LPRD and gastroesophageal reflux disease.

ChatGPT-4 accuracy for patient education in laryngopharyngeal reflux.

Chatbot Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT) is an artificial intelligence-powered language model chatbot able to help otolaryngologists in practice and research. The ability of ChatGPT in generating patient-centered information related to laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) was evaluated. Twenty-five questions dedicated to definition, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of LPRD were developed from the Dubai definition and management of LPRD consensus and recent reviews. Questions about the four aforementioned categories were entered into ChatGPT-4. Four board-certified laryngologists evaluated the accuracy of ChatGPT-4 with a 5-point Likert scale. Interrater reliability was evaluated. The mean scores (SD) of ChatGPT-4 answers for definition, clinical presentation, additional examination, and treatments were 4.13 (0.52), 4.50 (0.72), 3.75 (0.61), and 4.18 (0.47), respectively. Experts reported high interrater reliability for sub-scores (ICC = 0.973). The lowest performances of ChatGPT-4 were on answers about the most prevalent LPR signs, the most reliable objective tool for the diagnosis (hypopharyngeal-esophageal multichannel intraluminal impedance-pH monitoring (HEMII-pH)), and the criteria for the diagnosis of LPR using HEMII-pH. ChatGPT-4 may provide adequate information on the definition of LPR, differences compared to GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), and clinical presentation. Information provided upon extra-laryngeal manifestations and HEMII-pH may need further optimization. Regarding the recent trends identifying increasing patient use of internet sources for self-education, the findings of the present study may help draw attention to ChatGPT-4's accuracy on the topic of LPR.

Tonghua Liyan granules in the treatment of Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease with stagnation of phlegm and qi syndrome: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

Background: Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) is an extraesophageal syndromic manifestation of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Despite the increasing incidence of and concern about LPRD, treatment with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) is unsatisfactory. Here, LPRD was treated with Tonghua Liyan (THLY) granules in combination with PPIs to evaluate treatment efficacy and possible adverse reactions. Methods: Seventy-six LPRD patients with stagnation of phlegm and qi syndrome (SPQS) were randomly divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group received THLY granules combined with rabeprazole capsules. The control group received THLY granule placebo combined with rabeprazole capsules. A parallel, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted with these two groups. The treatment cycle was 8weeks. The reflux symptom index (RSI), clinical symptom score, salivary pepsin content, reflux finding score (RFS) and gastroesophageal reflux disease questionnaire (GerdQ) were used to evaluate clinical efficacy. The final efficacy rate was evaluated according to the RSI and clinical symptom score. Results: Compared with those at baseline, all the indicators in the experimental group and control group significantly improved (p < 0.01). In terms of the RSI, clinical symptom score, and RFS, the experimental group had a higher degree of improvement (p < 0.05), and the overall efficacy rate was higher (p < 0.05). In terms of the salivary pepsin concentration and GerdQ, there was no significant difference between the test group and the control group (p > 0.05). Both groups of safety indicators showed no abnormalities and did not cause any allergic reactions in the body. Conclusion: Compared with PPIs alone, THLY granules combined with PPIs are more effective in the treatment of LPRD patients with SPQS in terms of symptoms and signs. This combination treatment, because of its higher clinical efficacy and lack of obvious adverse reactions, is worthy of clinical promotion and further in-depth study. Predictors of Early and Late Response to Esomezol and Lifestyle Modification in Adults With Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease: A Prospective, Multicenter, Open-Label Cohort Study.

This study aimed to assess predictors of the response to varying durations of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use and lifestyle modification treatment for laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD). Between October 2014 and June 2016, a prospective, multicenter, open-label, single-cohort, intention-to-treat, observational study was conducted at eight referral hospitals across the Republic of Korea to examine predictors of early and late response to treatment in adult patients (age ≥19 years) with LPRD. Participants underwent standard treatment (PPI [Esomezol] and lifestyle modification) for 3 months. Response to treatment was defined as greater than 50% improvement in reflux symptom index score. The primary outcome was potential predictors of treatment response at 1 and 3 months. The secondary outcome was potential predictors distinguishing early from late responders. In total, 394 patients were enrolled. Improved sleep habits was a positive predictor (odds ratio [OR], 1.785; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.06-3.007; P=0.029), while initial alcohol consumption (OR, 0.587; 95% CI, 0.355-0.969; P=0.037) and past medication history (OR, 0.438; 95% CI, 0.215-0.891; P=0.005) were negative predictors of response after 1 month of treatment. High pre-reflux finding score was a positive predictor (OR, 1.187; 95% CI, 1.049- 1.344; P=0.007), while male sex (OR, 0.516; 95% CI, 0.269-0.987; P=0.046), higher depression score (OR, 0.867; 95% CI, 0.784-0.958; P=0.005), and past thyroid hormone medication history (OR, 0.161; 95% CI, 0.033-0.788; P=0.024) were negative predictors of response after 3 months of treatment. Past medication history (OR, 0.438; 95% CI, 0.215-0.891; P=0.023) was the only negative predictor for early responders compared to late responders. Adult patients with LPRD and a history of prior medication use may require longer treatment durations to achieve a therapeutic response. Future research should explore the incorporation of diverse treatment approaches to improve treatment outcomes for patients exhibiting negative prognostic indicators.

A Randomized Clinical Trial of Proton Pump Inhibitors Combined with Traditional Chinese Medicine in the Treatment of Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease

Background: To explore whether combined with TCM based on classical proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) therapy can achieve better efficacy for patients with laryngopharyngeal reflux disease. Methods: There were 150 laryngopharyngeal reflux patients enrolled and divided into three groups randomly, with 50 cases in each group. Patients in group A were treated with the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) lansoprazole. Patients in group B were treated with lansoprazole combined with Banxia Houpu decoction, and patients in group C were treated with acupuncture treatments and a combination of Chinese and Western medicine. The reflux symptom index (RSI), reflux finding score (RFS), and quality of life (36-item short form health survey questionnaire) were assessed before and 4 and 8 weeks after treatment. Results: The RSI and RFS scores of the three groups were significantly reduced after treatment (P &lt; 0.001). In group B and C, they were lower than in group A at 8 weeks (P &lt; 0.01). The SF-36 score of 3 groups increased after treatment. At both 4 and 8 weeks (P &lt; 0.001), and patients in groups B and C scored higher than patients in group A (P &lt; 0.001). The total effective rate of group B and group C was higher than that of group A (P &lt; 0.05). Conclusion: All three treatments have therapeutic effects on the disease, but the efficacy of a PPI alone is not as good as the combined treatments' efficacies. Moreover, PPI combined with Banxia Houpu decoction and/or acupuncture treatment substantially affects life improvement.

Trial of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation in laryngopharyngeal reflux disease: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

BackgroundPatients with persistent globus sensation, throat clearing, chronic cough, hoarseness, and other throat symptoms account for a large proportion of patients in ears, nose, and throat clinics. Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) is increasingly valued by otolaryngologists. Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) is possibly a new method for the treatment of LPRD. This trial aims to determine whether TEAS combined with proton pump inhibitor (PPI) is better than PPI alone in the treatment of LPRD.MethodsThis prospective randomized controlled trial will be implemented in a tertiary hospital in China. Seventy patients diagnosed with LPRD will be randomly assigned to the TEAS + PPI group (intervention group) or PPI group (control group), at a ratio of 1:1. In addition to using PPI, the intervention group will receive TEAS at four groups of acupoints, and each group will be treated for 15 min, once for 60 min, five times a week, for 12 weeks, 60 times. The main outcome will be changes in the Reflux Symptom Index scores at 4, 12, and 24 weeks after treatment. The secondary outcomes will include changes in the reflux finding score, Laryngopharyngeal Reflux-Health-related Quality of Life score, and throat pain visual analog scale score.DiscussionThis trial will explore the feasibility of TEAS combined with PPI for the treatment of LPRD and provide potential evidence for its effectiveness and safety. Risk Factor-Related Lifestyle Habits of Patients With Laryngopharyngeal Reflux.

The role of lifestyle habits in patients with laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) is comparatively underexplored. We aim to examine the specific lifestyle habits in patients with LPRD. Systematic sampling was applied to select respondents aged 18 through 80 years in otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery (OHNS) clinics in Nan Fang Hospital during August 2017-July 2018, 1658 eligible participants were included by a systematic sampling method. Subjects with RSI score>13 were considered as LPRD patients. The risk of reflux symptoms was estimated and multivariate calculated as odds ratios in relation to exposure to tobacco smoking, alcohol, coffee, tea, carbonated drinks, chocolate, spicy food, night sleep time, dinner-to-bed time, subjective sleep quality, and physical exercise. There was a significant dose-response association between carbonated beverage and LPRD. Among people who had drinking carbonated drinks the odds ratio was 1.76 (OR 1.77, 95% CI 1.24-2.50, P = .002) compared with non-carbonated drinker. A similar positive association was found for poor subjective sleep quality and shorter night sleeping time, the odds ratio for reflux was 1.58 (95% CI 1.14 to 2.18) among those who always have poor subjective sleep quality compared with those whose have good subjective sleep quality. The odds ratio for reflux was 2.29 (95% CI 1.23-4.28, P = .015) among those who always sleep 3-5 hours every night compared with those who sleep more than 8 hours every night. Beyond that, we found high BMI may have a negative correlation with LPRD, the odds ratio for reflux was .61 (95% CI 0.39 to .95, P = .054) among those whose BMI >25kg/m2 compared with those BMI ≤ 20kg/m2. Patients with LPRD may have certain lifestyle habits, avoid carbonated beverage, poor subjective sleep quality, and lack of sleep should be advised in treatment of LPRD.

Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease: Diagnosis and Treatment in 2021

Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) is an inflammatory condition of the upper aerodigestive tract mucosa induced by reflux content from stomach. Some of vocal cord diseases are associated with laryngopharyngeal reflux. Because of the pathophysiological features, proton pump inhibitor shows therapeutic effect on some vocal cord diseases. As like that, the gastric reflux contents can make macroscopic or microscopic morphological changes in the upper aerodigestive tract mucosa. Although the pathophysiology of LPRD is relatively clear, clinical diagnosis is still difficult. The diagnosis of LPRD includes objective tests such as 24-hours multichannel intraluminal impedance-pH metry and subjective tests such as questionnaire method. However, the objective verification of reflux is difficult due to invasiveness of the method, and the questionnaire methods have limitations because many symptoms are not specific for LPRD. Moreover, most methods are not fully standardized until now. Despite these limitations, many researchers are struggling to standardize diagnosis and treatment of LPRD, and there are several new achievements recently. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to review the recent literature on the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of LPRD, and to systematize our knowledge.

Proton pump inhibitors for the treatment of laryngopharyngeal reflux disease: A protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background:Laryngopharyngeal Reflux disease refers to abnormal reflux of gastric contents through the esophagus into the throat, which irritates and damages the pharyngeal mucosa, and causes corresponding symptoms. Proton Pump Inhibitors are an important class of gastric acid secretion inhibitors after H2 receptor blockers, which can be used clinically to treat peptic ulcer, abnormal gastric acid secretion and other related diseases. The common clinical drugs include omeprazole, lansoprazole, rabeprazole and so on. Clinical practice has shown that Proton Pump Inhibitors have a good therapeutic effect on Laryngopharyngeal Reflux disease, but evidence of evidence-based medicine is lacking. The purpose of this protocol is to systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of Proton Pump Inhibitors in the treatment of Laryngopharyngeal Reflux disease and to improve the evidence-based basis for the clinical application of Proton Pump Inhibitors in the treatment of Laryngopharyngeal Reflux disease.Methods:English computer retrieval database (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library) and Chinese computer retrieval database (Wanfang Database, VIP Information Chinese Journal Service Platform, Chinese Biomedical Database) . In addition, Baidu Scholar and Google Scholar were manually searched for randomized controlled clinical studies on the treatment of laryngeal reflux disease with Proton Pump Inhibitors from the establishment of the database to July 2020. Two researchers independently extracted and evaluated the data of the included studies, and meta-analysis was conducted on the included literatures with RevMan5.3 software without language restrictions.Results:In this study, the efficacy and safety of Proton Pump Inhibitors in the treatment of Laryngopharyngeal Reflux disease are evaluated by the overall response rate, clinical symptom remission rate and other indicators.Conclusions:This study will provide reliable evidence-based evidence for the clinical application of Proton Pump Inhibitors in the treatment of Laryngopharyngeal Reflux disease.OSF Registration number: DOI 10.17605 / OSF.IO / NY6SC

Is Adjunctive Alginate Therapy Beneficial in the Treatment of Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease in a Rural Indian Population? A Prospective Randomized Study.

To assess the benefit of adjunctive alginate therapy in the treatment of laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) in a rural population in south India, by comparing the outcome of alginate plus proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy versus PPI monotherapy. 100 consenting adults of both sexes, with LPRD symptoms for ≥ 1month, with both Reflux Symptom Index (RSI) > 13 and Reflux Finding Score (RFS) > 7, were included in a randomised prospective analytical clinical study. Patients were randomised into two treatment groups for 8weeks. Group A received oral pantoprazole (40mg, twice a day),and Group B received oral pantoprazole (40mg) and oral alginate (500mg/10ml) twice a day each. Treatment outcome was assessed with RSI and RFS at 4 and 8weeks. On follow-ups, both groups showed significant improvement in RSI. At 4weeks, significant improvement in RFS was seen in Group B, but not in Group A; both groups showed improvement at 8weeks. The improvement was significantly better in Group B RSI and RFS on both follow ups. On analysis of each RSI item at 8weeks, choking sensation showed no significant improvement in Group A. All other items showed significant improvement in both groups, with all items except difficulty swallowing and choking sensation showing significantly better improvement in Group B. Analysis of each RFS item at 8weeks, showed significant improvement in Group B but not in Group A. The addition of alginate to PPI shows greater definitive improvement in both symptoms and signs of LPRD within a short period of 8weeks, compared to PPI monotherapy, making it a feasible treatment option with good results in routine practice in a rural set-up. Adjunctive alginate therapy enhances the resolution of clinical features of LPRD and is thus beneficial in its routine treatment in all populations.

The Use of Inhaled N-Acetylcysteine for Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are the mainstay of the medical treatment for laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD). However, extraesophageal symptoms of LPRD, such as globus, are often refractory to PPI treatment. Many kinds of adjunctive medications have been attempted to address those refractory cases. We aimed to study whether inhaled N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a mucolytic agent, has additive effects for the treatment of LPRD when used in conjunction with PPIs. Patients with reflux symptom index (RSI) greater than 13 and reflux finding scores (RFS) greater than 7 were prospectively enrolled and were randomly assigned to control or study group. Patients were treated with oral rabeprazole in the control group and with oral rabeprazole and inhaled NAC in the study group. Patients were followed once a month for 2 months with questionnaires and stroboscopic examination. At every follow-up, RSI and RFS were checked. The extent of improvements of RSI and RFS were evaluated and compared between two groups. With treatment, the mean RSI changed from 21.0 to 7.6 (P < 0.001) in control group and from 19.7 to 4.5 (P < 0.001) in study group. The mean RFS also changed from 12.9 to 7.1 (P < 0.001) in control group and from 13.5 to 6.9 (P < 0.001) in study group. For both RSI and RFS, the extents of improvement were not significantly different between two groups. In patients whose RSI improved less than nine at the first follow-up (poor early responders), RSI became significantly lower in the study group (4.6 ± 2.0) than in the control group (9.5 ± 4.6) at second follow-up (P=0.019). In good early responders, however, RSI was not significantly different between the two groups in the second follow-up. In this study, there were no significant differences in the overall outcome between patients treated with inhaled NAC and PPI and those with PPI alone. Interestingly, some additional therapeutic effect of NAC appeared late for the patients with poor early response. Further studies are required to investigate the underlying mechanism for this.

Treatment of laryngopharyngeal reflux disease: A systematic review.

BACKGROUNGFor a long time, laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) has been treated by proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) with an uncertain success rate.AIMTo shed light the current therapeutic strategies used for LPRD in order to analysis the rationale in the LPRD treatment.METHODSThree authors conducted a PubMed search to identify papers published between January 1990 and February 2019 about the treatment of LPRD. Clinical prospective or retrospective studies had to explore the impact of medical treatment(s) on the clinical presentation of suspected or confirmed LPRD. The criteria for considering studies for the review were based on the population, intervention, comparison, and outcome framework.RESULTSThe search identified 1355 relevant papers, of which 76 studies met the inclusion criteria, accounting for 6457 patients. A total of 64 studies consisted of empirical therapeutic trials and 12 were studies where authors formally identified LPRD with pH-monitoring or multichannel intraluminal impedance-pH monitoring (MII-pH). The main therapeutic scheme consisted of once or twice daily PPIs for a duration ranged from 4 to 24 wk. The most used PPIs were omeprazole, esomeprazole, rabeprazole, lansoprazole and pantoprazole with a success rate ranging from 18% to 87%. Other composite treatments have been prescribed including PPIs, alginate, prokinetics, and H2 Receptor antagonists.CONCLUSIONRegarding the development of MII-pH and the identification of LPRD subtypes (acid, nonacid, mixed), future studies are needed to improve the LPRD treatment considering all subtypes of reflux.

Clinical and Acoustical Voice Quality Evolutions Throughout Empirical Treatment for Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease According to Gender: A Preliminary Study

Objective: To compare symptoms, signs, and acoustical voice quality changes throughout the 6-month course of empirical treatment between laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) males and females. Materials and Methods: Forty clinically diagnosed LPR females and 40 males with a reflux finding score (RFS) >7 and a reflux symptom index (RSI) >13 were treated with pantoprazole and diet recommendations during 3 or 6 months according to their evolution. RSI, RFS, and acoustic parameters were assessed at baseline and 3 and 6 months posttreatment. A correlation analysis between videolaryngostroboscopic findings and acoustic measurements was performed. Results: RSI, RFS, and many acoustic measurements (i.e., percent jitter, percent shimmer, phonatory fundamental frequency range, fundamental frequency variation, and peak-to-peak amplitude variation) significantly improved from baseline to 3 months posttreatment in male group. In female group, RSI and RFS total score significantly improved along the 3 first months of treatment. However, some clinical outcomes (i.e., RSI total score, hoarseness, cough, and globus) continued to improve from 3 to 6 months of treatment. We did not identify significant improvement of acoustic measurements in female group. The correlation study did not reveal significant correlation between videolaryngostroboscopic findings and acoustic measurements. Conclusion: This preliminary study suggests the occurrence of gender-related differences in the LPR therapeutic response. Further studies need to clarify whether females require a longer course of therapy than males.

Role of Proton Pump Inhibitors in Laryngopharyngeal Reflux: Clinical Evaluation in a North Indian Population.

There has been an escalation of patients presenting with symptoms of Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) in the otorhinolaryngology clinics due to life style and dietary changes. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of various proton pump inhibitors in the treatment of LPRD using Reflux symptom index (RSI) and Reflux finding score (RFS). This was a prospective study conducted from June 2016 to February 2017 with a total of 240 patients with symptoms and signs of LPR. The patients were divided into 5 groups. Each group was subjected to particular proton pump inhibitor. There were 124 males 116 females with a mean age 34.3 and rural to urban ratio being 11. After 3months, RFS and RSI score within each group, improved significantly with Proton pump inhibitor therapy. In our study patients who were treated with omeprazole 20mg twice daily had the highest improvement in laryngeal symptoms and laryngeal findings. We conclude emphasizing the effectiveness of proton pump inhibitors with incorporation of lifestyle modification in the successful management of LPRD.

Safety and Effectiveness of Reza Band in Management of Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease: A Preliminary Study

Background and Objectives The main treatment of laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) includes life style modification and proton pump inhibitor (PPI) medication. However, LPRD is sometimes refractory to PPI medication. The Reza band has been developed to exert external pressure on the upper esophageal sphincter thus preventing gastric acid reflux to the larynx and pharynx. The aim of this study was to evaluate safety and efficacy of using the Reza band in patients with LPRD. Subjects and Method We prospectively enrolled 16 LPRD patients who were refractory to PPI medication and who had agreed to wear the Reza band. Patients were treated with the Reza band and PPI medication simultaneously or only the Reza band. We studied complications related to the Reza band, analyzed Reflux Symptom Index (RSI) and Reflux Finding Score (RFS) before and after the application of the band up to 12 weeks. Results The Reza band was endured by 15 patients except one patient. One patient (6.25%) ceased wearing the band due to pain and discomfort in the neck. No major complications occurred, except one patient who reported mild neck discomfort when the band was applied. The mean value of RSI before the application of the Reza band was 12.31±6.43, which significantly improved at 8 weeks and 12 weeks (9.17±5.08, p=0.005 and 8.20±5.59, p=0.007, respectively) post-treatment. The mean value of RFS before the application of the Reza band was 13.50±2.97, which significantly improved at 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks (p＜0.05) post-treatment. Conclusion We conclude that the Reza band is safe and effective for the treatment of LPRD in properly selected patients. Ltd., Taipei, Taiwan) (sodium alginate 1,000 mg three times daily) with a placebo was conducted on patients who fulfilled the criteria of at least one symptom consistent with LPRD, a total reflux symptom index (RSI) score of > 10, and a total reflux finding score (RFS) of > 5. Those with erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease, as evidenced through screened transnasal upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, were excluded. Efficacy was assessed by RSI, RFS, and ambulatory multichannel intraluminal impedance and pH (MII-pH) monitoring. A total of 80 patients aged 22 to 72 years were enrolled. Compared with baseline, both Alginos (TTY Biopharm Co. Ltd.) and the placebo significantly reduced the total RSI (P < 0.001) and the total number of reflux episodes shown by MII-pH monitoring (P < 0.05) after 8 weeks of treatment. However, liquid alginate suspension was unable to show superiority over the placebo. The incidence of various adverse events from Alginos (TTY Biopharm Co. Ltd.) was relatively low (7.7%) and mild. This study showed that liquid alginate suspension was well tolerated by LPRD patients. It effectively improved symptoms and reflux numbers but was unable to show superiority over placebo. Evaluation of Omeprazole in the Treatment of Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease: A Single Center, Prospective and Randomized Study

ABSTRACT Aims To assess efficacy and safety of omeprazole in laryngitis due to laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD). Materials and methods It was a prospective, randomized, open label study conducted in 90 patients with laryngitis due to LPRD. Group A (n = 45) received omeprazole and advice about life style modification, group B (n = 45) received only advice about life style modification. Reflux symptom index (RSI), reflux finding score (RFS), quality of life (QoL) and voice handicap index (VHI) were evaluated at 0, 4 and 8 weeks. Results P ercentage r eduction i n R SI a nd R FS w as s ignificantly higher in group A after 8 weeks (37 vs 29%, 18 vs 13% respectively). Excess throat mucus, clearing of throat and erythema of posterior larynx improved considerably in group A compared to group B. Conclusion Omeprazole could be a significant addition to life style modification in LPRD patients particularly for signs and symptoms, such as excess throat mucus, clearing of throat and erythema of posterior larynx.
