There is a rising concern regarding arthrocentesis due to its feasible dificulties, emphasizing the importance of precise expertise in the anatomy and performance of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), ensuring an understanting of the pathological processe that may occur. These processes could lead to limitations in buccal opening and loss of masticatory function. The current paper aims to evaluante the items or information, techniques, and efficacy of arthrocentesis applied to the treatment of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ). A systematic review was conducted from 2013 to 2023, based on Google Scholar, LILACS, MEDLINE, PubMed and SciELO. The studies demonstrare that arthrocentesis is highly effective in treating certain TMJs and emphasize the importance of a precise diagnosis and correct technique by professionals to indicate the appropriate therapeutic modality. Positive evidence was found regarding the use of arthrocentesis in treating articular disc displacement, with or without reduction, retrosciditis, synovitis, capsulitis, and lockjaw.
