Chiral transport in strong fields from holography

Anomaly-induced transport phenomena in presence of strong external electromagnetic fields are explored within a 4D field theory defined holographically as U(1)V × U(1)A Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in Schwarzschild-AdS5. Two complementary studies are reported. In the first one, we present results on the Ohmic conductivity, diffusion constant, chiral magnetic conductivity, and additional anomaly-induced transport coefficients as functions of external e/m fields. Next, gradient resummation in a constant background magnetic field is performed. All-order resummed constitutive relations are parameterised by four momenta-dependent transport coefficient functions (TCFs). A highlight of this part is a thorough study of non-dissipative chiral magnetic waves (CMW) in strong magnetic fields.

Gradient resummation for nonlinear chiral transport: an insight from holography

Nonlinear transport phenomena induced by chiral anomaly are explored within a 4D field theory defined holographically as U(1)_Vtimes U(1)_A Maxwell–Chern–Simons theory in Schwarzschild-AdS_5. In presence of weak constant background electromagnetic fields, the constitutive relations for vector and axial currents, resummed to all orders in the gradients of charge densities, are encoded in nine momenta-dependent transport coefficient functions (TCFs). These TCFs are first calculated analytically up to third order in gradient expansion, and then evaluated numerically beyond the hydrodynamic limit. Fourier transformed, the TCFs become memory functions. The memory function of the chiral magnetic effect (CME) is found to differ dramatically from the instantaneous response form of the original CME. Beyond hydrodynamic limit and when external magnetic field is larger than some critical value, the chiral magnetic wave (CMW) is discovered to possess a discrete spectrum of non-dissipative modes.

Anomalous transport from holography: part II

This is a second study of chiral anomaly-induced transport within a holographic model consisting of anomalous U(1)_Vtimes U(1)_A Maxwell theory in Schwarzschild–AdS_5 spacetime. In the first part, chiral magnetic/separation effects (CME/CSE) are considered in the presence of a static spatially inhomogeneous external magnetic field. Gradient corrections to CME/CSE are analytically evaluated up to third order in the derivative expansion. Some of the third order gradient corrections lead to an anomaly-induced negative B^2-correction to the diffusion constant. We also find modifications to the chiral magnetic wave nonlinear in B. In the second part, we focus on the experimentally interesting case of the axial chemical potential being induced dynamically by a constant magnetic and time-dependent electric fields. Constitutive relations for the vector/axial currents are computed employing two different approximations: (a) derivative expansion (up to third order) but fully nonlinear in the external fields, and (b) weak electric field limit but resuming all orders in the derivative expansion. A non-vanishing nonlinear axial current (CSE) is found in the first case. The dependence on magnetic field and frequency of linear transport coefficient functions is explored in the second.

Anomalous transport from holography. Part I

We revisit the transport properties induced by the chiral anomaly in a charged plasma holographically dual to anomalous $U(1)_V\times U(1)_A$ Maxwell theory in Schwarzschild-$AdS_5$. Off-shell constitutive relations for vector and axial currents are derived using various approximations generalising most of known in the literature anomaly-induced phenomena and revealing some new ones. In a weak external field approximation, the constitutive relations have all-order derivatives resummed into six momenta-dependent transport coefficient functions: the diffusion, the electric/magnetic conductivity, and three anomaly induced functions. The latter generalise the chiral magnetic and chiral separation effects. Nonlinear transport is studied assuming presence of constant background external fields. The chiral magnetic effect, including all order nonlinearity in magnetic field, is proven to be exact when the magnetic field is the only external field that is turned on. Non-linear corrections to the constitutive relations due to electric and axial external fields are computed.

U(1) current from the AdS/CFT: diffusion, conductivity and causality

For a holographically defined finite temperature theory, we derive an off-shell constitutive relation for a global $U(1)$ current driven by a weak external non-dynamical electromagnetic field. The constitutive relation involves an all order gradient expansion resummed into three momenta-dependent transport coefficient functions: diffusion, electric conductivity, and "magnetic" conductivity. These transport functions are first computed analytically in the hydrodynamic limit, up to third order in the derivative expansion, and then numerically for generic values of momenta. We also compute a diffusion memory function, which, as a result of all order gradient resummation, is found to be causal.

Linearly resummed hydrodynamics in a weakly curved spacetime

We extend our study of all-order linearly resummed hydrodynamics in a flat space~\cite{1406.7222,1409.3095} to fluids in weakly curved spaces. The underlying microscopic theory is a finite temperature $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling. The AdS/CFT correspondence relates black brane solutions of the Einstein gravity in asymptotically \emph{locally} $\textrm{AdS}_5$ geometry to relativistic conformal fluids in a weakly curved 4D background. To linear order in the amplitude of hydrodynamic variables and metric perturbations, the fluid's energy-momentum tensor is computed with derivatives of both the fluid velocity and background metric resummed to all orders. We extensively discuss the meaning of all order hydrodynamics by expressing it in terms of the memory function formalism, which is also suitable for practical simulations. In addition to two viscosity functions discussed at length in refs.~\cite{1406.7222,1409.3095}, we find four curvature induced structures coupled to the fluid via new transport coefficient functions. In ref.~\cite{0905.4069}, the latter were referred to as gravitational susceptibilities of the fluid. We analytically compute these coefficients in the hydrodynamic limit, and then numerically up to large values of momenta.

Linearized fluid/gravity correspondence: from shear viscosity to all order hydrodynamics

In ref. \cite{1406.7222}, we reported a construction of all order linearized fluid dynamics with strongly coupled $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory as underlying microscopic description. The linearized fluid/gravity correspondence makes it possible to resum all order derivative terms in the fluid stress tensor. Dissipative effects are fully encoded by the shear term and a new one, emerging starting from third order in hydrodynamic derivative expansion. In this work, we provide all computational details omitted in \cite{1406.7222} and present additional results. We derive closed-form linear holographic RG flow-type equations for momenta-dependent transport coefficient functions. Generalized Navier-Stokes equations are shown to emerge from the constraint components of the bulk Einstein equations. We perturbatively solve the RG equations for the viscosity functions, up to third order in derivative expansion, and up to this order compute spectrum of small fluctuations. Finally, we solve the RG equations numerically, thus accounting for all order derivative terms in the boundary stress tensor.

CAPILLARY POROUS MEDIA: INTERNAL HEAT AND MASS TRANSPORT

ABSTRACT Transport processes in inhomogeneous bulk materials are described and experimentally investigated by means of moisture measurement by an electrolytic conductivity method. A continuum model is used for sufficiently large regions of volume. The state and transport coefficient functions are, in this case, dependent upon the structure of the solid matrix.

Transport coefficients and salt rejection in unchanged hyperfiltration membranes

Flow equations for salt and water in double-layer membranes are suggested and salt rejection as a function of transport coefficients is derived. Salt rejection at given volume flow is completely determined by the reflection coefficient and salt permeability of the dense layer. Salt rejection was measured as a function of flow rate for modified cellulose-acetate membranes heat-treated at different temperatures. The maximal salt rejection observed with these membranes ranged from 69–99%. Salt-rejection curves were calculated from the independently measured transport-coefficients. Good agreement between the calculated and observed curves was found. This approach makes it possible to separate the influence of flow rate on salt rejection from eventual pressure-induced changes in membrane structure.
