Two-dimensional image transmission based on the ultrafast optical data format conversion between a temporal signal and a two-dimensional spatial signal

We have experimentally demonstrated a two-dimensional (2-D) image transmission based on the ultrafast optical data format conversion between a temporal signal and a spatial signal with an ultrashort optical pulse. In the proposed system we adopt a spectral holography technique to transmit a one-dimensional (1-D) spatial signal and use a spatial-domain time-frequency transform to realize a transform between 1-D and 2-D spatial signals. By use of these techniques, a low-optical-loss transmission system can be constructed. To demonstrate a 2-D image transmission with this technique, we achieved experimentally transmission of the alphabet letter T as a 3 x 3 pixel 2-D spatial image.

Multistage optoelectronic two-dimensional image switches

The implementation principles and the feasibility of construction of high-throughput multistage optoelectronic switches, capable of transmitting data in the form of two-dimensional images along interconnected pairs of optical channels, are considered. Different ways of realising compact switches are proposed. They are based on the use of polarisation-sensitive elements, arrays of modulators of the plane of polarisation of light, arrays of objectives, and free-space optics. Optical systems of such switches can theoretically ensure that the resolution and optical losses in two-dimensional image transmission are limited only by diffraction. Estimates are obtained of the main maximum-performance parameters of the proposed optoelectronic image switches.

All-optical image transmission through a single-mode fiber

All-optical transmission of two-dimensional images through a single single-mode fiber with a two-dimensional multicolor surface-emitting laser array and a volume hologram is described. A preliminary experimental result to prove the concept of the idea is demonstrated by transmitting a simple 2 x 2 image over a distance of 1 mile (1.61 km).

Prospects of high resolution x-ray lithography

Some examples of the application of diffraction effects to projection transmission of two-dimensional images are shown. The factors determining of photoelectron blurring of image boundaries are investigated. Computer model of the structure profile formation mechanism in positive resists and its experimental varification are considered.

Two-dimensional image transmission through a single optical fiber by wavelength-time multiplexing

Serial transmission of image data through an optical fiber is inefficient in the utilization of the channel capacity of the fiber. Parallel image transmission techniques, on the other hand, generally limit the transmission length to a few meters. A novel approach is introduced with which 2-D image data can be transmitted efficiently at high speed over a single optical fiber using wavelength-time multiplexing. Several system configurations designed for different types of input are presented.

With this approach, images with space-bandwidth products greater than 2000 x 2000 can potentially be transmitted at a rate as high as 40 GHz.

Image transmission through a single optical fibre by colour coding

Two-dimensional image transmission through a single multimode fibre has been performed using colour coding. The correspondence between image points and colours is achieved with the combination of dispersive prisms and fibre bundle convertors. The light source is an ordinary tungsten lamp. The reconstructed 10 × 10 image can be seen by the naked eye.

Transmission of incoherent images through scattering media with a grating interferometer

Existing interferometric techniques for imaging through scattering media require coherent illumination and stationary targets. We introduce a new grating interferometer that is capable of imaging an incoherently illuminated target regardless of whether the targets and the scatterers are moving or stationary. This interferometer is particularly useful for the high-speed transmission of two-dimensional images through scattering media.

Transmission of two-dimensional images by wavelength multiplexing

Wavelength multiplexing is a method for encoding spatial information into spectral information. Previously, each point of a one-dimensional image corresponds to a specific wavelength. All wavelengths together can be transmitted in scrambled fashion through a single light fiber. Decoding into the original image is achieved by sending the transmitted light through a spectroscope. This process again displays the various wavelengths at various positions along a line. In this project, two-dimensional spatial information or grey tone images are encoded into a spectral distribution. After transmission through a light fiber this spectrum can be decoded into the original two-dimensional image. Four different encoding versions are presented, which use serial transmission parallel transmission, shifted light coupling or spatial pulse modulation.

System for two-dimensional image transmission through a randomly inhomogeneous medium

An analysis is made of the problem of using a double-beam interferometer with reference and signal beams in a system for transmission of two-dimensional images through a randomly inhomogeneous medium.
