A Spatiotemporal Assessment of Land Use and Land Cover Changes in Peri-Urban Areas: A Case Study of Arshaly District, Kazakhstan

In this study, the spatiotemporal dynamics of land use and land cover (LULC) were evaluated in the peri-urban area of the Arshaly district, which borders the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Landsat multispectral images were used to study the changes in LULC. The analysis of LULC dynamics was carried out using supervised classification with a multi-temporal interval (1998, 2008, and 2018). During the study period, noticeable changes occurred in LULC. There was an increase in the area of arable land and forests and a reduction in the pastures. There was a sharp increase in the built-up area; that is, there was an intensification of land use through an increase in the share of arable land as well as the transformation of agricultural land for development. However, in general, the influence of urban sprawl in this peri-urban area has so far been accompanied by only a slight focus on its sustainable development.

Household vulnerability located on land conversion for palm: Case study of pinrang sub-district, wajo district, South Sulawesi

The development of oil palm plantations has pushed for massive land-use change in Indonesia. As is the case in Penrang District, Wajo Regency. There is approximately 1,700 ha of agricultural land converted to oil palm plantations of 18,000 ha of land to be developed. The transformation of agricultural land into a palm oil plantation area with a partnership system has an impact on the limitations of the community in managing and accessing land owned by it. Farming activities for both rice and other commodities such as cashew and others and cattle grazing activities cannot be done on agricultural areas that have been planted for oil palm plantation. This condition triggers a shock to the livelihood system of farm households. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the vulnerability process and how communities conduct livelihood strategies to restore economic conditions and household livelihoods. This study used snowball sampling and in-depth interviews in two villages namely Temmabarang Village and Taddangpalie Village, Penrang District. The results of the research indicate that some farmers’ households are vulnerable due to land conversion in the form of work accidents when they become oil palm laborers (shock), decreasing activities to access, process and take yield after conversion of land, and vulnerability due to loss of livelihoods in certain seasons (seasonality). Vulnerability in the form of shock, trend, and seasonality is overcome by two types of strategies, namely survival strategy and consolidation strategy by relying on human capital, social capital, natural capital, and financial capital.

Historical Arable Land Change in an Eco-Fragile Area: A Case Study in Zhenlai County, Northeastern China

Long-term land changes are cumulatively a major driver of global environmental change. Historical land-cover/use change is important for assessing present landscape conditions and researching ecological environment issues, especially in eco-fragile areas. Arable land is one of the land types influenced by human agricultural activity, reflecting human effects on land-use and land-cover change. This paper selected Zhenlai County, which is part of the farming–pastoral zone of northern China, as the research region. As agricultural land transformation goes with the establishment of settlements, in this research, the historical progress of land transformation in agricultural areas was analyzed from the perspective of settlement evolution, and the historical reconstruction of arable land was established using settlement as the proxy between their inner relationships, which could be reflected by the farming radius. The results show the following. (1) There was little land transformation from nonagricultural areas into agricultural areas until the Qing government lifted the ban on cultivation and mass migration accelerated the process, which was most significant during 1907–1912; (2) The overall trend of land transformation in this region is from northeast to southwest; (3) Taking the topographic maps as references, the spatial distribution of the reconstructed arable land accounts for 47.79% of the maps. When this proxy-based reconstruction method is applied to other regions, its limitations should be noticed. It is important to explore the research of farming radius calculations based on regional characteristics. To achieve land-system sustainability, long-term historical land change trajectories and characteristics should be applied to future policy making.

Comparative effects of urban and agricultural land transformation on Odonata assemblages in a biodiversity hotspot

Rivers of the Cape Floristic Region (CFR) biodiversity hotspot are threatened by land transformation. This region is a centre of endemism for many taxa, including Odonata. These insects are highly sensitive to changes in physical habitat structure, which makes them good bioindicators, and this led to the development of the Dragonfly Biotic Index (DBI). We investigated the effects of local agricultural and urban land transformations on Odonata species richness, assemblage composition and DBI scores in three CFR rivers. A total of 48 sites were selected and categorized as natural, agricultural or urban land use. Adult male Odonata and four environmental variables were recorded over two seasons. Land transformation significantly influenced Odonata assemblage composition but did not always significantly reduce species richness. Average vegetation height also affected Odonata assemblage composition and decreased species richness. Agricultural and urban sites had Odonata assemblages differing from those in the natural areas. Agricultural and urban local land use types reduced opportunities for some endemic species but provided for the persistence and establishment of widespread, generalist species, as indicated by great changes in DBI scores. Mitigating the adverse influences of land transformation through establishment of protected areas is essential for the conservation of rare taxa, particularly in an area with a high number of endemic species.

Implementation of the transformation of agricultural land to non-agricultural constrained because some of the following: a. Refusal of requests for land use only verbally. b. The term of service of technical considerations of land is 13 (thirteen) days. But in practice it can reach 3 months. c. Management of Soil Contaminants in Guinea - Bissau

Population growth has motivated the gradual increase of agricultural, commercial and mini-industrial activities in Guinea-Bissau. Such activities have been contributing for the generation of certain type’s chemical products such as pesticides, fertilizers, plastic bags, hydrocarbons and others, and they are gradually contributing for the increase of harmful chemical wastes and consequently contaminating the environment and the human health since 1960s. Up to now, the country still lacks proper management of soil contaminants, fact that motivate the choice of this research topic in order to help addressing the environmental problems in Guinea-Bissau. This research aims to review the current status of soil contamination in Guinea Bissau, including the technical and regulatory management framework through a series of literature reviews, interviews, site visits and e-mail conversation, to identify the main sources and causes of soil contamination, to determine the effects on the environment and human health, the control and prevention measures including the national and international regulations. Nevertheless, the research found that, all chemicals used in this country are imported and their applications on bare soil are ones of the main causes for soil contamination due to the anthropogenic interest in Guinea-Bissau. Such in the short term can turn into a risk because of its multiplications in soil and inappropriate means of prevention and control of chemical wastes. And it will be visible in a long term due to an eventual transformation of agricultural land into severe infertility, loss of healthy environment and human fragility.

Diagnosis of complex coastal ecological systems: Environmental GIS analysis of a highly stressed Mediterranean lagoon through spatiotemporal indicators

This article explores the need for implementing spatiotemporal criteria in environmental planning of special protected areas, applying the analysis of reaction patterns in the case study of the Mar Menor, a Mediterranean coastal lagoon in South-Eastern Spain. To perform this, the Mar Menor environmental patterns suffering traditionally from intense coastal urbanization, and in recent years from important eutrophication problems, will be analyzed from an integrated approach and retrospectively assessed through territorial indicators. The evaluation will provide a clear example of a protected area regulated by multiple European Natura 2000 figures of protection that nevertheless is suffering from a strong and varied anthropic process over time. The results will show that paradoxically this process sometimes has little territorial linkage origin with the area concerned. This aspect will be addressed by using GIS indicators, to present the real correlation between coastal urbanization and agricultural land transformation with Mar Menor evolution over time (in which it is pointed out that the weight of the latter is much greater than the former) and how far it is necessary to establish an area of influence of the environmental impacts by proposing a new scope of application for the resolution of the current situation of eutrophication in its waters.

A systems approach to forecast agricultural land transformation and soil environmental risk from economic, policy, and cultural scenarios in the north central United States (2012–2062)

ABSTRACTGrassland conversion to row-crop production in the north central United States has been a growing threat to socio-economic and environmental sustainability for producers, conservationists, and policy-makers alike. We used a system dynamics model of the region to forecast agriculturally driven land transformation through mid-twenty-first century. The base-case scenario projection showed that farmland area continued to increase, from under 200,000 km2 to over 230,000 km2. Unmitigated, the soil environmental risk (SER) of such changes reached conservative estimates of Dust Bowl-era externalities. Systems analyses show that reducing livestock production costs, doubling conservation compliance requirements, and livestock–cropping integration had the largest impact on grassland conservation and mitigating SER. The largest SER effects came from eliminating conservation incentives or raising cultivation incentives, despite improvements in reduced tillage and enhanced agronomy. Several system archetypes were identified within the policy scenarios: ‘fixes that backfire’ and ‘success-to-the-successful’. For scenarios creating favourable impacts, time delays caused some behaviours to worsen before positive gains were realized. If implemented, patience and persistence to ensure that these scenarios reach their full potential will be necessary. Our scenarios provide quantitative forecasts around measures for sustainable intensification. These projections can aid regional stakeholders in enhancing discussions currently taking place about sustainable agriculture in the region.

INTEGRATED WATER MANAGEMENT AND DURABILITY OF LANDSCAPE OF PUBLIC IRRIGATED AREAS IN TUNISIA: CASES OF PUBLIC IRRIGATED AREAS OF CHOTT-MARIEM AND MORNAG

An important part of the landscape of irrigated areas in Tunisia is the result of morphology, organization and operation of agricultural policies implemented since independence, aimed at optimizing the exploitation of the best soils and natural resources, particularly water and productive crop intensification. The sustainability of the landscape of public irrigated areas has a strong bonding with the resources of irrigation water and their states of management. The scarcity of irrigation water due to drought generates profound changes in many public irrigated areas as Chott-Mariem and Mornag, like standpoint operating (decrease of production) and land occupation (transformation of agricultural land to urban land). An investigation was carried out with farmers, leaders and policy makers, which the result was a range of measures and recommendations to promote sustainability of agricultural landscape.

Ecosystem services in peri-urban landscapes: The effects of agricultural landscape change on ecosystem services in Taiwan's western coastal plain

Farmland within urban peri-urban areas can be understood as part of a green infrastructure that provides agro-ecosystem services to benefit the urban population. The growing influence of cities on peri-urban agricultural lands has had significant effects on agricultural land transformation with an associated loss in agro-ecosystem services. The loss of ecosystem services could result in an increase in a city's vulnerability to climate change. More than one sixth of the agricultural lands in Taiwan's western plain have been converted to other uses from 1970 to 2006. We hypothesize that planning guidelines based on landscape ecology could help to plan the optimal spatial configuration of paddy rice land uses in peri-urban areas. In order to study the effects of agricultural landscape changes on ecosystem services in peri-urban areas, this study selected appropriate landscape metrics to assess ecosystem services with landscape composition and configuration metrics for each of the research sites. This research has shown that because agro-ecosystem services are related with the spatial configuration of paddy rice fields, by planning agricultural land use change to optimize spatial configuration, agro-ecosystem services can be maintained. Guidelines are offered to manage agroecosystem services within a context of land use change.

Transformation of Agricultural Land for Urbanisation, Infrastructural Development and Question of Future Food Security: Cases from Parts of Hugli District, West Bengal

Developing countries of the world encounter urbanisation and infrastructural development in or around the fertile tracts and the absence of any landuse plan for desired land use change has led to conversion of farmlands, which is detrimental to future food security and environmental quality. Hugli district is traditionally well known as one of the most prosperous agricultural regions of West Bengal but the district is experiencing rapid urban extension and infrastructural development towards productive agricultural land since 1991. This has caused decline in the amount of agricultural production which may be treated as an indicator of increasing threat to the long run sustainable livelihood security of the people of the whole of West Bengal. This article critically explores the transformation of agricultural (farm) land because of growing rate of urbanisation and infrastructural development, which in turn poses the question of threat to food (in) security. Although, this is a growing problem across the universe, this article probes the future food security questions of Hugli district, West Bengal by examining the impact of the highly intertwined indicators of urbanisation and infrastructural development on agricultural (farm) land use and its effect on food security. Regression analysis, Spearman’s Ranking Correlation Coefficient, Remote Sensing technologies, Markov Chain Model, Projection of future population growth and yield rate are employed to understand the depth of the problem. The result not only shows a direct negative correlation between urban extension and agricultural areal contraction but also the supervised classification of satellite imageries shows that there is rapid change of rural land use from 1996-2016. There is no match between future population growth and future yield rate of crops and the Markov Chain Model further predicts that the cropland will decrease from 62.77% to 42.90% and the built up area will increase from 31.86% to 54.63% of the total area from 2016 to 2056.  

De la tierra al suelo: la transformación del paisaje y el nuevo turismo residencial

Residential Tourism has had a main role of speeding up the social and environmental processes of change that took place in Spain during the second half of the last century. This article begins with the description of its main characteristics, its effects at a local level and the different phases of its evolution. A special reference will be made with regard to last phase (2002-2007) which has been nomitaded New Residential Tourism (NRT). NRT is characterized by the appearance of urban megaprojects of thousands of households, with several golf courses and all the services needed. Its goal is to build privatized units of residential leisure, which are autonomous and independent from the territory where they are settled. In this paper there is an underlying reflection about the socio-cultural consequences of the transformation of agricultural land into urban land. A land that is definitely denatured and transformed into urban space for tourism consumption.

The integrated sprawl index: measuring the urban landscape in Israel

Urban sprawl in Israel began two decades ago, but has yet to be empirically measured or characterized. Major processes that influenced sprawl in Israel were the rise in standard of living, consumer preference for low-density and single-family housing in the suburbs, and the arrival of nearly one million immigrants from the former USSR during the 1990s. All these processes led to a massive transformation of agricultural land into urban land-uses all over the country and provide some evidence that sprawl is taking place as a pattern of development. This study attempt to measure and analyze urban sprawl in Israel, based on a large sample of urban settlements. Higher sprawl rates were found to correlate significantly with higher population and land-consumption growth rates, which implies a higher consumer preference to reside in more sprawling patterns. Variables that are linked with sprawl in Western countries were usually found to be significant in Israel, as well; however, unlike other Western countries, urban sprawl in Israel is rather spatially dispersed, and not necessarily found on the edges of metropolitan areas.

It brings about massive peasant evictions resulting in an increase of poverty and of disparity levels much worse than in cities. This extension of the latifundia is linked to drug trafficking. It uses violent methods of expropriation of the peasantry. As such, the transformation of agricultural land into pastures has been exaggerated, without a parallel increase in livestock. The livestock rearing zones hardly contribute to fiscal revenue and block the functioning of the land market. Agrarian reform in Columbia is as such waiting for its hour.

Carbon accumulation in bay of fundy salt marshes: Implications for restoration of reclaimed marshes

Transformation of agricultural land to natural terrestrial vegetation has been suggested as a means to increase soil carbon storage. However, the capacity for carbon storage in terrestrial soils is limited as compared to soils of tidal salt marshes, the original vegetation of many coastal agricultural lands. In a number of countries, tidal salt marshes have been “reclaimed,” that is drained and diked to prevent tidal flooding and create suitable conditions for dry land agriculture. In this study we examine spatial and temporal patterns of carbon accumulation in tidal salt marshes of the Bay of Fundy and estimate the carbon storage potential of the bay's extensive area of reclaimed marsh. Rates of carbon accumulation vary from the upper to the outer Bay, over which there is a gradient of decreasing tidal range and suspended sediment supply. In the outer bay, high‐marsh densities are highest (0.042 ± 0.009 g C cm−3), but carbon accumulation rates over the past 30 years are lowest (76 g C m−2 yr−1). The reverse pattern occurs in the upper bay where carbon densities in the high‐marsh environment are lowest (0.036 ± 0.002 g C cm−3), but carbon accumulation rates over the past 30 years may be as high (184 g C m−2 yr−1). Compared to other ecosystems, the rates of carbon accumulation presented in this study were similar over timescales of years to centuries. Increases in relative sea level (over time) and suspended sediment supply (across the bay) positively affect the marsh soil accumulation rate and the rate of carbon sequestration. Parameters such as %C are not useful predictors of a marsh's potential for carbon sequestration. Soil carbon densities of functioning marshes and reclaimed marsh soils are similar, but marsh soils have a storage capacity that increases with rising sea level, while agricultural soils, such as those in reclaimed marshes, have a fixed (or possibly decreasing in reclaimed marshes) volume over time.

Analysis of the Present Condition of an Allotment Garden in Japan

In Japan, allotment gardens for use by the public have been developed as a means of revitalizing unused agricultural land. Compared with allotment gardens in Europe, their significance in urban planning or welfare services is not clear. For the development of allotment gardens in Japan, a stable supply of agricultural land and a steady demand from the public are essential. This paper analyzes the present condition of Japanese allotment gardens from the viewpoint of the management of such gardens and the needs of their users, with special reference to the Minuma Fureai Garden in Kawaguchi City, Saitama prefecture. The results can be summarized as follows:1) The management of the Minuma Fureai Garden is entrusted to an agricultural cooperative, but all of the expenses for its establishment are paid for by local government. The operation cost exceeds the annual income from user's fees (15, 000 Yen per person per year), and subsidies from the municipality make up 18% of the total income.2) This allotment garden is located in the southern part of the Minuma paddy field, where the transformation of agricultural land is prohibited by law in order to maintain its function as a reservoir to mitigate flooding. This regulation for land use is very important, for it keeps the rent very low.3) A recent deregulation of this rule concerning land use could threaten the existence of the allotment garden. However, according to cost-benefit analysis, the benefits exceed the costs if the external economies of the allotment garden are evaluated in monetary terms. It is necessary to discuss what type of government intervention should take place and the possible introduction of a beneficiary payment system in the future.4) According to a questionnaire survey of the users of the Minuma Fureai Garden, 70% of the users are over 50 years old. It is believed that people who have had agricultural experience tend to use the allotment garden more frequently. However, half of the users had no previous agricultural experience.5) Users were divided into three categories based on their motivation; a communication-oriented group, a family-leisure group, and an individual hobby group.6) Users who re-applied to use the allotment garden again after the one-year contract expired equal 60% of the whole. However, this figure varies depending on the distance from place of residence to the allotment garden.7) Most of the users hope to continue to use the same plot for many years and this contributes to the maintenance of the agricultural land. There are also strong demands for the improvement of facilities such as providing a rest room in the allotment garden. It is very important to satisfy these demands in order to continue to attract the public to use the allotment gardens in the future.

In the tradition of studies about central places theory in urban Systems, some contributions have emphasized the invariability of the concentration index in Systems of a certain size, that comply with one of the main organizing principles elucidated by W. Christaller. This research of the structural change is an empirical, longitudinal study of some Swiss representative regions(1850-1990), their transformation of agricultural land into industrial and urban-industrial territoriality, and a prevision of their future.Central places, hierarchical structure, Swiss urban System.
