An intelligent transportation system for forecasting wireless communication network issues with cyber attacks

This paper propose a method to design an “Intelligent Transportation System” for forecasting wireless communication network issues with cyber attacks. Wireless communication networks(WCN) is a broadly classified and critical gateway for any communication devices because the wireless communication networks is operated at various frequency ranges in different locations. In order to maintain its performance and also to prevent any attacks due to its high data handling, we need an Intelligent transportation system (ITS) to analyse and detect the cyber-attacks before going to implement it in real time transportation. In general wireless communication networks is an IEEE 802.11 standard which can be operated at physical Transfer control protocol/Internet protocol(TCP/IP) layer as well OSI model. In this paper a novel approach to design, analyse and detect cyber-attacks is proposed for wireless communication networks transport system, called Intelligent transportation system (ITS) based cyber-attack detection. Stacked firewall system is used for reducing fake attacks and detecting real time attacks in transportation system. Hence any fake attacks or real time attacks captured by the ITS will be informed to the system controller to make decision to whether it is a false-positive or real attack. ITS is the main process of the stacked firewall system which in turn take responsible to control, maintain, and prevent any cyber-attack.

Protection of XML-Based Denail-of-Service and Httpflooding Attacks in Web Services Using the Middleware Tool

A web service is defined as the method of communication between the web applications and the clients. Web services are very flexible and scalable as they are independent of both the hardware and software infrastructure. The lack of security protection offered by web services creates a gap which attackers can make use of. Web services are offered on the HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) with Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) as the underlying infrastructure. Web services rely heavily on the Extended Mark-up Language (XML). Hence, web services are most vulnerable to attacks which use XML as the attack parameter. Recently, a new type of XML-based Denial-of-Service (XDoS) attacks has surfaced, which targets the web services. The purpose of these attacks is to consume the system resources by sending SOAP requests that contain malicious XML content. Unfortunately, these malicious requests go undetected underneath the network or transportation layers of the Transfer Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), as they appear to be legitimate packets.In this paper, a middleware tool is proposed to provide real time detection and prevention of XDoS and HTTP flooding attacks in web service. This tool focuses on the attacks on the two layers of the Open System Interconnection (OSI) model, which are to detect and prevent XDoS attacks on the application layer and prevent flooding attacks at the Network layer.The rule-based approach is used to classify requests either as normal or malicious,in order to detect the XDoS attacks. The experimental results from the middleware tool have demonstrated that the rule-based technique has efficiently detected and prevented theattacks of XDoS and HTTP flooding attacks such as the oversized payload, coercive parsing and XML external entities close to real-time such as 0.006s over the web services. The middleware tool provides close to 100% service availability to normal request, hence protecting the web service against the attacks of XDoS and distributed XDoS (DXDoS).\

Satellites Are Just Things on the Internet of Things

The innovation of Transfer Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) technology, the basis for the Internet, has created dramatic changes in how technologies are linked. Cybersecurity is now an issue for everyday devices as they are connected to the Internet of Things (IoT). Satellites are no different; they are on the IoT. This article argues that cybersecurity is a high level concern in that it directly implicates state responsibility for space activities and international peace and security in general, but that it is regulated by low level governance and soft legal mechanisms. It recommends that satellite operators approach cybersecurity as a dynamic enterprise. It also recommends that the industry make proactive engagement in the cybersecurity community at large and seek to define industry specific best practices and guidelines.

Sensor integration in industrial environment: from fieldbus to web sensors

This paper deals with the feasibility of a compact and low-cost web-enabled sensor. A sensor can be interfaced to Ethernet using a low-cost microcontroller and few resources, as in fieldbus sensors. To realize a web sensor, Internet Protocols must be provided and most of the cost is in full-compliant implementation of these high-level protocols (Transfer Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) or Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP)). This approach allows access to the sensor from everywhere with a commercial browser instead of a proprietary interface. The proposed web sensor, which requires about 15 kbytes of C-code and 1 kbyte of Random Access Memory (RAM), supports IP fragmentation, manages two simultaneous TCP connections (one “fast” and one “slow”) and exchanges information (web page) with commercial browsers.

A microtomography beamline at the Louisiana State University Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices synchrotron

A microtomography beamline has been recently assembled and is currently operating at the Louisiana State University’s Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices synchrotron (CAMD). It has been installed on a bending magnet white-light beamline at port 7A. With the storage ring operating at 1.5 GeV, this beamline has a maximum usable x-ray energy of ∼15 keV. The instrumentation consists of computer-controlled positioning stages for alignment and rotation, a CsI(Tl) phosphor screen, a reflecting mirror, a microscope objective (1:1, 1:4), and Linux/LabVIEW-controlled charge coupled device. With the 1:4 objective, the maximum spatial resolution is 2.25 μm. The positioning and image acquisition computers communicate via transfer control protocol/internet protocol (TCP/IP). A small G4/Linux cluster has been installed for the purpose of on-site reconstruction. Instrument, alignment and reconstruction programs are written in MATLAB, IDL, and C. The applications to date are many and we present several examples. Several biological samples have been studied as part of an effort on biological visualization and computation. Future improvements to this microtomography station include the addition of a double-multilayer monochromator, allowing one to evaluate the three-dimensional elemental composition of materials. Plans also include eventual installation at the CAMD 7 T wiggler beamline, providing x rays in excess of 50 keV to provide better penetration of higher mass-density materials.

A networked platform for agricultural management systems

Greenhouse control computers are an essential part of modern greenhouse operation. Climate, irrigation and nutrient supply must be controlled, in an economical way, to produce the best crop conditions. Current research on CO 2 enrichment and optimal growth strategies implies the use of powerful tools, either based on hardware or software. This paper describes the design and implementation of a distributed data acquisition and control system for computerised agricultural management systems that is being developed at Universidade of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, Vila Real. Different communications platform concepts, such as Controller Area Network (CAN), Wireless Technologies, Ethernet and Internet tools supported by Transfer Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and e-mail tools supported by Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) were used to achieve a network with a low-cost, flexible, and functional characteristics. The system management and maintenance tasks are divided into two types of performance levels. At a lower supervision level, a Local Controller placed in the greenhouses performs the monitoring/control and communications actions. The management decisions are performed at the higher level. The techniques and tools, which provide to the user a transparent, friendly and intuitive Graphical User Interface (GUI) will be presented.
