Abstract

This paper deals with the feasibility of a compact and low-cost web-enabled sensor. A sensor can be interfaced to Ethernet using a low-cost microcontroller and few resources, as in fieldbus sensors. To realize a web sensor, Internet Protocols must be provided and most of the cost is in full-compliant implementation of these high-level protocols (Transfer Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) or Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP)). This approach allows access to the sensor from everywhere with a commercial browser instead of a proprietary interface. The proposed web sensor, which requires about 15 kbytes of C-code and 1 kbyte of Random Access Memory (RAM), supports IP fragmentation, manages two simultaneous TCP connections (one “fast” and one “slow”) and exchanges information (web page) with commercial browsers.
