The realization of personality oriented approach to learning and the personality formation of future nurses in high schools of Ukraine of the I-II accreditation levels (the end of XX – the beginning of XXI centuries)

The article contains the analysis of introduction of personality oriented learning in the process of training future nurses in medical HEI of the modern Ukraine. Such an approach is especially important for higher medical education that trains specialists, who work with people, that is why the personal aspect of training became crucial here.The content of personality oriented learning is connected with competence, cultorological and axiological ones. In the article are considered the forms and means of development of students' personality at learning process. There were analyzed such effective ways of student's development as problematization of learning content, technology of analysis of situations, interactive methods of learning in regime of dialog with human or intellectual system (computer), business games. The influence of practice in stationary medical institutions on personal development of future nurses was considered. The requirement of combination of theoretical knowledge, practical skills and moral convictions as the aspects of professionally oriented person of nurse was formulated. The influence of such learning on formation of future nurses personality, especially on national-patriotic, moral-ethical and legal education of student youth, was demonstrated.The conclusion about the fact that personal development of future nurse that includes formation of her professional qualities, correspondent link of the modern medical education is also criterion of its efficacy was made. The crucial condition of realization of this aim is the ability of educational institution to rely on student's personal experience at learning process, to widen and enrich it

Knowledge of undergraduate nursing students about human papillomavirus vaccine

Objective: to identify the knowledge that undergraduate nursing students have about human papillomavirus vaccine. Methods: field research, descriptive, cross-sectional. Sample composed of 100 undergraduate nursing students of a private university, with use of a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: among participants, 98.0% reported that they knew the human papillomavirus vaccine, 65.0% recognized the types of viruses against which the vaccine gives protection, and 51.0% had knowledge about the age group that is targeted to receive the vaccine in the public healthcare network. As for the features of the administration of the vaccine, such as dosage, route of administration, contraindications and adverse events, a level of knowledge below 60.0% was observed. Conclusion: insufficient knowledge on the human papillomavirus vaccine was found among the students participating in the present study and this stresses the need to give more attention to the discussion about the prevention of cervical cancer during the training of future nurses.

Nurses' perceptions of care during wartime: aqualitative study.

This study explains nurses' experiences and views on the care of injured soldiers during the Iraq-Iran war (1980-1988) and the effect of this care on these nurses. Many studies on war suggest nurses' experiences physical and psychological trauma. Knowing the nurses' experiences can assist healthcare systems and the nursing profession to identify unknown threats. War is a specific phenomenon. After soldiers, nurses are one of the first professions to engage in the phenomenon when it occurs. A descriptive qualitative approach was used along with conventional content analysis. Data collected in 2014 from semi-structured interviews of 14 nurses who were selected through purposive sampling. Two themes (Care in the war, a different culture and concept and Care achievements during the war) and six subthemes (Unusual working conditions, Different work spirit, A real but informal classroom, Professional self-achievements, Outcomes for the professional community, The changed self) emerged from the data. A range of environmental factors and conditions, mental and emotional problems and the outcomes of war were identified. This study emphasizes the importance of being prepared for such crises and using the previous experiences of nurses who served in war time for training future nurses.

Knowledge of nursing students about cardiorespiratory arrest

This study aimed to investigate the knowledge of nursing students about cardiorespiratory arrest. It consisted in a qualitative research with 29 nursing students of the Federal University of Campina Grande, campus Cajazeiras, Paraiba, Brazil. A semi-structured interview was used for data collection, which took place in December 2014 after approval by the Ethics and Research Committee of the institution of education. The technique of Collective Subject Discourse was used for data analysis. Unpreparedness and insecurity of academics with respect to cardiorespiratory arrest were evident. The lack of practice makes them afraid and they point to the educational institution as responsible for not providing environments to better prepare them for stressful situations. Therefore, there is a need for strengthening the academic training of future nurses by increasing the opportunities for practice so that students get familiar with the reality they will face and, this way, this gap in the nursing training may be reduced.

Subjective well-being and its association with peer caring and resilience among nursing vs medical students: A questionnaire study

The subjective well-being (SWB) of nursing and medical students is a very important component in the training of future nurses and doctors, as well-being enables them to be more productive. The study examined the effects of peer caring and resilience on SWB as well as the mediating and moderating effects of resilience in the relationship between peer caring and SWB. A cross-sectional survey design was used. A university and an affiliated hospital in China. The convenience sample consisted of 426 nursing students and 336 medical students. Questionnaires comprising peer caring measurement, a resilience scale and a well-being scale were used in the spring of 2014. Students participate in the study showed low SWB. There was a significant difference between nursing students and medical students in peer caring, but not in SWB and resilience. The mediating effects of resilience on the relationship between peer caring and SWB were examined. As hypothesized, resilience mediated the relationship between peer caring and SWB partly for nursing students (SE=0.022, 95% CI=0.041-0.128) and fully for medical students (SE=0.023, 95% CI=0.067-0.161). Resilience did not statistically significantly moderate the peer caring-SWB relationship for nursing students (β=0.092, p=0.057) but did so for medical students (β=0.108, p<0.05). Peer caring and resilience improved the SWB of both nursing students and medical students. In addition, resilience improved SWB through peer caring for both nursing students and medical students, and higher resilience in medical students enhanced the positive effects of peer caring on SWB. Therefore, educators should promote peer caring and resilience in order to improve students' SWB.

Hardiness as a mediator between perceived stress and happiness in nurses

The relevance of the study of happiness and stress in nurses has been emphasized. In this sense, the intelligent use of hardiness is enable nurses to cope better with stress and contribute to being happier. This study aimed to examine the relationship among hardiness, perceived stress, and happiness in nurses. Moreover, we examined the mediator role of hardiness on the relationship between perceived stress and happiness in nurses. Our study revealed that hardi-attitude nurses evaluate situations as less stressful which results in a higher happiness. This study showed hardiness as being a protective factor against perceived stress and a facilitating factor for happiness in nurses. The findings could be important in training future nurses so that hardiness can be imparted, thereby giving them the ability to control their stress. Problem-Solving Skills and Hardiness as Protective Factors against Stress in Iranian Nurses

Nursing is a stressful occupation, even when compared with other health professions; therefore, it is necessary to advance our knowledge about the protective factors that can help reduce stress among nurses. The present study sought to investigate the associations among problem-solving skills and hardiness with perceived stress in nurses. The participants, 252 nurses from six private hospitals in Tehran, completed the Personal Views Survey, the Perceived Stress Scale, and the Problem-Solving Inventory. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to analyse the data and answer the research hypotheses. As expected, greater hardiness was associated with low levels of perceived stress, and nurses low in perceived stress were more likely to be considered approachable, have a style that relied on their own sense of internal personal control, and demonstrate effective problem-solving confidence. These findings reinforce the importance of hardiness and problem-solving skills as protective factors against perceived stress among nurses, and could be important in training future nurses so that hardiness ability and problem-solving skills can be imparted, allowing nurses to have more ability to control their perceived stress.

Comments on Two Recent Curriculum Studies

ADEQUATE instruction of nurses in social hygiene-as this subject is understood in the United States-is an important problem. The National League of Nursing Education, the Rockefeller Foundation, the American Social Hygiene Association, and other agencies cooperating are to be congratulated upon the recent study in the matter and method of such instruction.' If the publication of this study is followed by a series of well-planned tests of the syllabi in schools for nursing, there is hope for the development of rapid progress in training future nurses to play their full part not only in the care and prevention of syphilis and gonorrhea but in the more difficult adjustments of sex functions and factors in the lives of men, women, and children. Practicing nurses and physicians know how important and how baffling is this whole subject; but few of them received any instruction in it in college or in their professional courses. The availability of a carefully planned study reported upon under the guidance of a strong committee will doubtless lead many individuals as well as schools of nursing to secure copies and try out the recommendations. Out of these trials should come an acceptable pattern of instruction for general application. The objectives of such instruction and guiding principles have been set forth interestingly; and outlines are suggested for integrating appropriate material in existing courses of the curriculum, or for introducing a unified course on the subject.
