Surviving and Thriving: A Small-scale Study of the Role of Group Work Training in Developing Teachers’ Professional Practice

This paper presents two case studies from a small-scale qualitative study which the writers have undertaken. In each case, a participant from a number of years ago reflects on their memories of and feelings about the small group training component of an MA in Human Relations programme in which they had been involved. They go on to consider how they feel these experiences affected their subsequent professional practices. The writers conclude by discussing the implications of what these former students say.

Process-play: A simulation procedure for group work training

Training group leaders creates a dilemma between participation in a training group and a student's right to privacy. Process-play is an experiential training group structure that addresses this dilemma. Students participate in a training group through a mask, whereby they differentially respond to certain group members on the basis of superficial characteristics. This introduces an attributional bias such that students attribute group behavior to the mask instead of stable personality characteristics, protecting students from potentially damaging consequences of self-disclosure. Unlike traditional role-play, students bring their personal issues and concerns to the training group, allowing for important interpersonal learning to occur.

Toward a standards-based classification of group work offerings Robert K. Conyne

The authors, members of the Association for Specialists in Group Work professional training standards committee that drafted the present training standards, respond to the Waldo and Bauman article. They underscore the increasing value of the standards in shaping group work training, practice, and research, pointing out that the standards were not intended to classify independent group offerings. For such classification, while recognizing the contribution of Waldo and Bauman, they suggest an alternative standards-based approach. This classification approach uses a methods-by-purpose framework. In addition, the authors draw from this framework to make suggestions to further define and clarify the four group work specializations.

Young Persons' Social Interaction Group

The experience of three trainees running a young persons' social interaction group is described. This is discussed in six stages: training needs; philosophy and practice of group work; planning the assessment of group members; making the assessments; planning the group; and running the group. Supervision, evaluation and follow-up are also discussed. Our thoughts and conclusions following the experiences are presented. This is a personal perspective of training in group work. We hope that this article will encourage trainees considering group work to do so with confidence.

The general status of group work training in accredited counseling programs

Abstract In a national survey, CACREP -accredited counseling programs were assessed for compliance with the 1990 Association for Specialists in Group Work standards for group work training, including knowledge and skill standards for core training, and the four group work specializations (task and work groups, psycho educational groups, counseling groups, and psychotherapy groups).

The new ASGW Standards and their evolution are described and contrasted with 1983 Standards. Implications for group work training and practice are presented.

Context for revising the association for specialists in group work training standards

Abstract The revised standards for the training of group workers, recently adopted by the Association for Specialists in Group Work Executive Board (April 1991) are presented, preceded by a context for their development.

Groupwork with computers

Abstract The researchers will develop a programme of computer‐based groupwork in two clusters of four‐six primary/middle schools. This will be improved and modified in the light of the first year's experience. Research techniques will also be piloted during this developmental phase. A series of studies will then be planned over 2 years as a coherent programme, involving both teacher researchers and university‐based researchers. These will investigate relationships between context variables, group processes and pupil attitudes and learning. Special attention will be given to the effects of varying the computing environment and the learning task, to pupils' psychological characteristics and their variance or invariance, to group size and competition, to gender effects, to teacher intervention strategies, and to the effect of prior training in cooperative groupwork and/or experience of groupwork off the computer.

Training for Empirical Group Work

Empirical group work practice utilizes systematic and ongoing collection of data as means of making decisions and evaluating short and long term shifts in individual and group phenonema. Guidelines for practical and theoretical learning and supervision are presented.

A multidisciplinary seminar for training in group work.

As part of the staff development program at Kentucky's Eastern State Hospital, a five-session seminar was designed to teach group therapy techniques. It features lectures and small-group discussions on four types of groups: goal-oriented, supportive, confrontative, and psychotherapeutic. The discussions simulate the four types of groups, to show how the roles of leader and members differ in each. After completing the seminar, the trainees, who include nonprofessional ward personnel, gain experience by serving as co-therapists for patient groups.

Group Counseling with Juveniles

Group counseling is not a new technique in working with juvenile probationers. To date, however, such programs have usually involved leadership by professionally trained groupwork ers, psychologists, and psychiatrists, and the costs of these perma nent services have been prohibitive for most juvenile courts. To face the challenge of improving services to probationers, using existing resources, the Franklin County (Columbus, Ohio) Juve nile Court developed a limited group counseling program. After one year of operation, an evaluation of data led to three major observations: (1) probation officers without professional training in groupwork can function effectively in a limited group counsel ing program; (2) a substantial number of juvenile probationers can benefit significantly from this group counseling; and (3) the effectiveness of probation officers in handling a heavy caseload, and the quality of probation services offered by them, can be much improved by use of group counseling as a supervisory technique.
