Abstract The records of the New York City Police Department and the New York State Department of Correction would show that my career of crime began at fifteen when I was committed to the Elmira Reformatory for robbing a Tenth Avenue grocery store. These records are slightly inaccurate. My underworld career really began four years earlier, at the tender age of eleven, when I “turned off” a Ninth Avenue cigar store for a load of cigarettes and candy and an armful of Nick Carter and Old Sleuth magazines. I have indelible memories of that blood-and-thunder fiction which furnished me with patterns for my adolescent exploits. Moreover, it convinced me that George Washington and Abraham Lincoln were sissies compared to Jesse James, “High Card Mike,” and the Younger Brothers. Safe cracking and train robbery, it also convinced me, was a better racket than statesmanship.

Some Economic Aspects of Motion Picture Production and Marketing

I r THE motion picture industry is said to have a total capital investment of two billion dollars in the United States alone. value of its product, however, amounts to only 0.26 per cent of domestic manufactures. Considering this relatively small volume percentage, the industry would not be worthy of intensive discussion were it not for certain factors which set it apart. It assumes a position of particular economic interest because of (i) the rapidity of its development; (2) its geographic concentration; (3) its peculiar marketing and production problems; (4) its far-reaching influence upon social and economic standards and conduct. This infant so-called, has had a remarkable and interesting history, its growth having been nothing short of phenomenal. Out of this rapid development have come certain conditions which are particularly interesting to the student of economics. Consequently, a brief sketch of the highlights of the industry's evolution will make for clearer understanding of the existing state. In the history of the motion picture industry, the period up to I903 is not particularly important, due to the fact that the industry as such had as yet attained very little stature. year I903, however, saw the sudden increase in value of all devices connected with the industry. phenomenon giving rise to this condition was the discovery, with the production of The Great Train Robbery, that the motion picture could tell a story. demand for the photoplays subsequently produced was so great that theaters arose by the hundreds. The Rise and Fall of Jesse James

Jesse and Frank James were household names long before images of America's most wanted were televised. For several decades after the Civil War, they were hunted by hundreds who supposed them to be involved in every bank and train robbery in the Midwest. Trained as guerrilla fighters in the border conflict between Kansas and Missouri, they joined with the Younger brothers in February 1866 to rob a bank in Liberty, Missouri. That was the beginning of a criminal confederation that seemed beyond the reach of the law until the Northfield, Minnesota, raid killed three of them and sent the James brothers into hiding. But they were the objects of posted rewards that proved too tempting in Jesse's case: in 1882 he was shot in the back by Robert Ford of his own gang. The Rise and Fall of Jesse James, by Robertus Love, a newspaperman who knew Frank James, is a pioneering work that plumbs the personalities of the outlaws, looks at their domestic lives, cites many stories about them, and attempts to separate fact from legend in tracking their violent operations. Michael Fellman assesses Love's 1926 book in his introduction to this Bison Books edition. He is a professor of history at Simon Fraser University and the author of Inside War: The Guerrilla Conflict in Missouri during the Civil War (1989).
