A Proposed Model for Radio Frequency Systems to Tracking Trains via GPS(The Study for Egyptian National Railways)

The Technological evolution which occurred in digital systems favored the appearance of new services to be applied in railways. Radio communications played an important role in the management, exploration, and maintenance of railway transports. Due to the vital importance of security, the track-to-train communications system is studied in depth, with significant changes through the integration in its operation of the global system for mobile communication and global positioning systems. This paper has proposed the implementation of a global positioning system (GPS) based train monitoring system that could locate a train at every instant. Here a GPS-GPRS module transmits the location information to a web server. The paper also presents a low-budget system to track the trains inside tunnels. The paper presents a solution implemented at Egyptian National railways, to provide an intelligent train tracking and management system to improve the existing railway transport service.

Investigating Freight Corridors Towards Low Carbon Economy: Evidence from the UK

The objective of this study is to gain a better understanding of whether a freight corridor concept, as promoted by the EU TEN-T initiative, is feasible and sound and can be promoted to reduce the environmental (greenhouse gas) impact of long distance freight operation. Research has been conducted to investigate the characteristics of freight corridors across the European Union. This paper reports the analysis of freight corridor links from the UK and Ireland to Duisburg, Germany. This analysis is based on desktop research and interviews with UK freight operators. The findings suggest that the corridor is relatively green and, by its use, has the potential to attract greener freight flow. The key barriers are capacity bottlenecks on road and rail. We found that key improvement opportunities to promote the use of the green corridors are: the uptake of Channel Tunnel surplus capacity; released capacity on rail due to the planned high speed lines; better train management systems and the development of cleaner road transport.

Positive train control for Australia

The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) is developing its advanced train management system to provide positive train control (PTC) for Australia. Lockheed Martin is currently applying advanced technologies and proven systems development techniques to develop a PTC system for the ARTC known as the advanced train management system (ATMS). The ATMS is designed to meet current and future needs of the ARTC by supporting ARTC's objectives of improving train service availability and transit times while enhancing rail safety and system reliability. The ATMS will obviate the need for ARTC to replace its aging conventional signaling systems infrastructure throughout much of its national rail network.

Total Information System for the New Generation of Rolling Stock in MTR

The Mass Transit Railway Corporation Limited (MTRCL) will be building a new railway extension, namely, the TSeung Keung O Extension (TKE). And a new fleet of Rolling Stock will be purposely bulit. Owing to growing demands of a reliable maintenance information which is the key to a successful asset management, a high level of attention was given to the above new projects in the framework of information requirements. As such, this new fleet of Rolling Stock involves a Train Management System (TMS) which is constructed with the latest electronic technoiogy. The TMS is designed to control and monitor a wide range of train borne system. In this context, another on-ground information system, namely, the Train/ Depot Information system (TDIS) will be installed in the depot in order to provide a series of back-end functians of data communication, information management as well as decision support. The TDIS is a database information management system which can provide a number of maintenance support functions, such as, automatic data upload and download, configuration management of train equipment monitoring of Sub-system performance, scheduling of maintenance activities and fault diagnosis based on configurable diagnosis rules. In addition, to meet the requirement of effectively and efficiently retrieving the large volume of operation and maintenance manuals, an electronic documentation retrieval system which is called the Interactive Electronic Train Manual (IETM) will be provided as part of the Rolling Stock contract deliverables. This paper outlines the background, project execution and design features of the TMS, TDIS and IETM for the TKE project.

The New Harmonised Train Management and Train Control System ERTMS/ETCS

During the last fifty years the face of Europe has changed its appearance totally. Old borders disappeared to a large extent and further borders will fall. These facts have deap consquences to all traffic in Europe, because traffic has to be borderless as well, but due to European history there are still some kind of borders existing, even if they officially have been abolished. This is especially a problem in relation to the Trans European Rail Network. Trains still have to stop at borders because of different technologies in use. Therefore, in Europe several activities are going on to make railways more interoperable. One of this activities is the development of a European Train Management and Train Control System.

Absolute Braking And Relative Distance Braking- Train Operation Control Modes In MovingBlock Systems

With development of modern telecommunication, computer and control techniques, train operation control system, particularly for high speed trains, will be transited from Fixed Block Systems (FBS) to Moving Block Systems (MBS). MBS is an intelligent, comprehensive and modern train operation control system and its development reflects the trend of train operation control and management system in the future. There are two train operation control modes in MBS: Absolute Distance Braking Mode(ADBM) and Relative Distance Braking Mode (RDBM). The two different control modes are with the different efficiency and the different risk. At present, the concepts for RDBM has been widely applied in the control systems for road traffic. However, it is the first time that the idea is tried to be implemented in train control systems. The definitions for ADBM and RDBM and their relevant concepts are given and explained firstly in the paper. The mathematics model for Car Following Theory (CFT) is applied to describe the performance of MBS for ADBM and RDBM with different conditions. A Train Following Theory is put forward and it is one of the key mathematical theories to be established for MBS before RDBM is implemented. Under the conditions of train operation safety, the two strategies are compared in terms of train operation efficiency.
