How does it feel to be a problem? The Diasporic Identity of the Homeless

In this paper I uncover the identity response of the homeless to structural constraints that are facilitated through objectively produced and mass mediated culture. After an initial period of “liberation,” physical deprivation leads the homeless to seek institutionalized help. The “homeless” category constructed by the shelter industry absolves the system of blame and obfuscates the systemic roots of homelessness. In their picking and dropping of identities, and negotiations of meaning without any referential space to root themselves in, the homeless reveal to us the cultural tragedy of the present that affects us all due to rapid social change inherent in advanced capitalism.

Graduate Employability and the Principle of Potentiality: An Aspect of the Ethics of HRM

The recruitment of the next generation of workers is of central concern to contemporary HRM. This paper focuses on university campuses as a major site of this process, and particularly as a new domain in which HRM’s ethical claims are configured, in which it sets and answers a range of ethical questions as it outlines the ‘ethos’ of the ideal future worker. At the heart of this ethos lies what we call the ‘principle of potentiality’. This principle is explored through a sample of graduate recruitment programmes from the Times Top 100 Graduate Employers, interpreted as ethical exhortations in HRM’s attempt to shape the character of future workers. The paper brings the work of Georg Simmel to the study of HRM’s ethics and raises the uncomfortable question that, within discourses of endless potentiality, lie ethical dangers which bespeak an unrecognised ‘tragedy of culture’. We argue that HRM fashions an ethos of work which de-recognises human limits, makes a false promise of absolute freedom, and thus becomes a tragic proposition for the individual.

Education and the Tragedy of Culture: Pedagogical Notes on the Rationalization of Knowledge

We usually think of education as a space within a culture, but a space that would be outside or beyond the contradictions inherent to culture. However, to what degree is the promise of modern pedagogy still possible? Up to what point do the ideals and meanings of modern culture and education bring with them their impossibility? To address these questions, we consider it essential to reflect on the junction produced between the vast field of culture and the processes attached to its transmission. Education, we propose, cannot be thought of as a sphere separate from social life, nor could it exist were it not embedded in historical clay.

We should take the papers issued by Georg Simmel between 1898 and 1906 on three historical Italian cities, i.e. Rome, Florence and Venice, as essays on aesthetics, those cities being considered as works of art. Under the influence of the German Lebensphilosophie and Geisteswissenschaft, those essays on aesthetics investigate into the meaning of the conflict between life and form, nature and spirit, within modern culture, a conflict that turns into the tragedy of culture, as human works — cities, in the present case — , when crystallizing and becoming autonomous, go against the continuous current of life.

Sport Within the Veil: The Triumphs, Tragedies and Challenges of Afro-American Involvement

American's traditional relegation of sport to the "toy department" of human affairs conceals both its signifi cance as an institution and the seriousness of its impact upon social relations and development. Nowhere is the validity of this assessment more evident than in the situation confronting Afro-Americans. Here, sport is revealed to be neither "fun- and-games," a citadel of interracial brotherhood and harmony, nor blacks' passport to the "good life." Rather, for blacks, it emerges as a fog-shrouded, institutional minefield, even further obscured by naivete, ignorance, and decades of selec tively accumulated myth. In reality, sport not only exhibits the same structure and ideological rationalizations of human rela tions as exist in the larger society, but it plays a fundamental role in sustaining the character of those relations. Only through a thorough understanding of the functions of sport as an insti tution and the dynamics of its disproportionately powerful influence upon Afro-American life can black people ever hope to extricate themselves from what can only be termed a politi cal and cultural tragedy.
