In this work, we describe the proposal of a fuzzy control system to manage the traffic in a critical point, in Mossoro - RN, composed by a traffic light that controls a pedestrian crossing point in a busy road, which is connect to a roundabout. The system includes access to two important universities, UFERSA - Federal Territorial University of the Semi-Arid, and UERN -State University of Rio Grande do Norte. The problem in this traffic system is related to traffic jams in rush hours, which block the access to both universities, blocking all entrances and exits of the roundabout. Several techniques have been used for traffic control, including local policies, as well as computational systems, such as fuzzy systems. The adopted methodology, a fuzzy control system, is justified by the interpretability and accuracy of the final model. The problem was tackled by measuring and analysing the traffic system in order to control the main element in case of traffic jams, the traffic lights. The control is performed by adjusting the green time for vehicles of the traffic lights in order to allow a suitable flow of vehicles while keeping the waiting time of pedestrians at reasonable levels. The rules to control the traffic lights were empirically defined by adjusting the fuzzy sets modelling the variables of the systems. Simulation results show that the proposed fuzzy control system is suitable to tackle the problem by providing an economic and feasible alternative, with promising results.
