Building the model of academic library an digital competences

Abstract: Librarian competences in the era of digital communication era are determined by the environment and the problems that the librarians have to solve in the nearest future. The librarians have to identify their role and to learn new competences for the digital society based upon digital information when traditional library competences have faded. The author examines various approaches to the concepts of competence, competency and competence approach. The author reviews various ideas of nature, structure and ways of librarian digital competence development; specifies the concept digital competence development and emphasizes its impact on academic libraries.The nature of librarian digital competence implies professionally relevel personal quality manifesting itself in the ability of solving social and professional problems with information and communication technologies, upgrade your skills in digital technologies, and adapting professional knowledge to changing digital society. The model of librarian competences for digital environment was developed by Siberian Federal University Scientific Library; the model is discussed. It comprises soft and flexible skills. The model would enable to solve various problems in staff management, to move the library forward toward strategic goals and to meet user needs and demands.

Controlled Digital Lending

AbstractLibraries and library consortia are adopting controlled digital lending (CDL) as a strategy, accelerated by the ongoing COVID‐19 pandemic, to facilitate equitable access to print collections. While advocates of CDL contend that digitize‐and‐lend practices reflect an incremental, technology‐assisted adjustment to traditional library circulation, lending, and resource‐sharing practices, opponents of CDL in the United States and Canada argue that the practice contravenes well‐established copyright protections. This paper discusses current controversies surrounding CDL, its potential promise and perils, and concludes that a reasonable, equitable, and forward‐looking application of copyright laws ought to insulate libraries and library consortia from exposure to liability for engaging in CDL.

Photocatalysis in the Life Science Industry.

In the pursuit of new pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals, chemists in the life science industry require access to mild and robust synthetic methodologies to systematically modify chemical structures, explore novel chemical space, and enable efficient synthesis. In this context, photocatalysis has emerged as a powerful technology for the synthesis of complex and often highly functionalized molecules. This Review aims to summarize the published contributions to the field from the life science industry, including research from industrial-academic partnerships. An overview of the synthetic methodologies developed and strategic applications in chemical synthesis, including peptide functionalization, isotope labeling, and both DNA-encoded and traditional library synthesis, is provided, along with a summary of the state-of-the-art in photoreactor technology and the effective upscaling of photocatalytic reactions.

The Origins of Bibliographic Control of cartographic resources

The librarian interest in the preservation and cataloguing of cartographic resources is an old topic, but the widespread awareness within the library profession belongs to the post-World War II period. For a very long time, in fact, these resources were not subjected to adequate bibliographic control. The reasons for this delay are many: the lack of awareness of these resources by the library community, the tendency to consider them an inferior category compared to traditional library resources and the difficulty in defining a common description model both at national and international level. It is only since the middle of the 20th century that the urgency of dealing with this heritage of extraordinary documentary value has been felt. Since then, much has been done both in terms of the census of these resources and the definition of guidelines within international standards, but much remains to be done.

Analysis on the Construction of the Fine Management System of Library Books

The concept of refined management was first used in the field of enterprise management, and it is more effective than traditional management methods. As far as library management is concerned, the use of sophisticated management methods to implement library information management can greatly reduce management costs and improve management quality and efficiency. The essential skills and competencies of LIS professionals in the digital age: alumni perspectives survey

PurposeThe librarianship profession has gone through many changes over time, more so with the emergence of digital technologies. To thrive in the library and information science (LIS) profession, professionals must have knowledge, skills, competencies and abilities to perform their job duties. The purpose of this paper was to identify essential knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) for the LIS professionals.Design/methodology/approachThe targeted survey group for the study were alumni of ten LIS schools in India, who are now working in various library sectors. A structured questionnaire was designed to seek their opinions, and the snowball sampling technique was adopted to collect the data. A total of 377 responses were received from the respondents.FindingsFive broad areas of KSAs were identified: traditional library skills, research skills, computing skills, data management skills and soft skills. This study found that computing skills, library automation and library digitization are considered absolutely essential for the LIS professionals. The results also brought out the importance of “soft skills” for the LIS professionals. Prerequisite knowledge of library liaison services, technical services and foreign language were reportedly important only for working in special libraries.Practical implicationsThis study identified 54 skills across five broad areas that are essential for the professionals working in library and information centres. The research findings will be helpful for the educators who want to design, develop and upgrade the LIS course curriculum in accordance with the skills that are in demand in the market.Originality/valueThis study establishes that though the participants expressed satisfaction with the practicum of the curriculum, the LIS course curriculum needs to be improved. It would be in the best interest of the LIS schools to identify and rectify the gap.

Digital library studies: The subject and definition

The author demonstrates that the problems of library process automation have been put forward in 1970s. He refers to the book by Gerard Salton (1927–1995) (well-known author and designer of SMART – System for the Mechanical Analysis and Retrieval of Text): «Dynamic information and library processing» (1973). In his monograph, Salton reviewed the libraries and predicted their future as electronic institutions; he also proposed the model of efficient library collection circulation and discussed the issues of collection quality, file organization and storage, technology of computer-aided classification, etc. He concluded the monograph with the paragraph on the collection growth and document removal. In fact, it was one of the first and significant works in electronic collection studies. Russian e-librarianship dates back to 2001 when the first edition of textbook by Andrey I. Zemskov and Ya. L. Shrayberg was published. The priority of theoretical conceptualization of electronic processes was given to IT professionals. They were enthusiastic about new technologies but rather depreciative about the time-honored provisions of general and applied library science. They have been thinking that they are to design the library of special kind and, correspondingly, that the library science of special kind bears no relation to traditional library studies. Empirically they have adopted the approach of their predecessors of the dawn of civilization. They have been interpreting the subject of electronic library studies etymologically – as the book depository (i.e. the system of two elements: e-documents and facilities). The e-library, however, has got the same structure as any other library, and the structure of library science is also the same; it comprises the rovisions related to the whole e-library and each of its four elements of its primary contour, i.e. library collection, user/reader contingent, facilities and resources, and library staff. Each of the provisions is specified in the article.

The e-Library of the National Library of Sakha Republic (Yakutia): The general approaches

The upgrade project for the Electronic Library of the National Library of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) is discussed. The goal is to provide remote access to its digital content, to expand and develop library information services in the digital environment. The e-library enables to improve library services of the republican population and to raise the profile of the library in the modern technological world. The elibrary’s new services emerge at the synthesis of new information technologies (implementation tool) and new approaches to traditional library and bibliographic processes. The user-group oriented segments were designed ("School", "Reading since very birth", "Science in Yakutia", "Electronic publishing house") which enables to meet information demands to the fullest extent possible. The options for using personal accounts, statistical performance indicators, e-library document collection, resources selection and systematization, and grouping methods are characterized in brief. The search instrument makes an important performance indicator; it can be used for every segment and collection and is locked to descriptive metadata fields for all types of resources (formats). The concept of creating Single Library and Information Environment based on the National Library of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) provides the organizational and technological prospects for the e-Library.

Humanizing Virtual Library Instruction: Anchoring Teaching Presence in Online Information Literacy Sessions

The onset of the 2020 pandemic caused traditional in-person library instruction to expeditiously move to virtual environments. In an effort to maintain the personalized human touch and interactions that occur between librarians, students, and faculty, the constructs of teaching presence were embedded into online informational literacy sessions at a small private institution in the Northeast region of the United States. This article explores the integration of teaching presence to humanize virtual library instruction. Findings and implications of this study can inform future work of librarian educators as online instruction continues to increase at higher education institutions.

Using LibGuides to Chart the Way in a Sea of Information

Health sciences librarians can benefit from adding the creation or expansion of existing LibGuide services to their list of health literacy tools. By seeking out opportunities to partner with traditional library constituencies and new constituencies, health science librarians can broaden their health literacy horizons with each newly created LibGuide. This paper examines the use of LibGuides and use statistics to provide expanded user services for library clientele.

Core digital resources for small and/or medium size libraries (Academic, Public, Special)

Libraries have long been very crucial to our search for information. To this day though google has taken over, libraries still play a very important role in the academic society especially with the provision of study space. Whatever the size of a library is it can be digitized to meet the specified standard. The need for digital librarianship was advocated for during the inception of the internet and the world wide web. It takes a lot of commitment, concerted effort and interest form management, policy makers and the government at large to convert the traditional library and a digital and sustain it as well. Creating a digital library also require the services of experts and technicians within the information technology jurisdiction and the training of library staff. The prolific use of Facebook, high powered servers, high specification smart phones, Instagram, WhatsApp have all brought about the necessity for the digitization of the library.

Attitudes and Perceptions toward Design Thinking in Graduate-Level Library Education

This study aims to understand educators’—specifically those in positions of authority in graduate-level library education programs—perceptions of and attitudes toward design thinking and methods in graduate-level library curricula by investigating the following research questions: What is the current landscape for the integration of design into the LIS curriculum, from the program director’s perspective? What do these directors think about the competencies required for future librarians, and where does design fit into those competencies? What are the possibilities for a future degree focused on reconceptualizing the field from a design perspective rather than the traditional library science? Thirteen MLIS program directors and people in equivalent positions at ALA-accredited programs in the United States and Canada were interviewed to investigate these queries. The conversations suggest there is a growing openness to design education that may contribute to the diversification of the curriculum so that graduates’ competencies more closely reflect recommendations in the literature and address the needs of employers. They also reveal dichotomies in how LIS program directors define and integrate design education into LIS curricula, such as barriers of bureaucratic concerns versus interest in experimenting with design courses available elsewhere in their universities, or even the potential for a dual library science/library design degree option. The article concludes with recommendations for next steps in advancing design in library education so as to prepare graduates for the growing number of user experience, public programming, or even more traditional teaching librarian positions where a design thinking approach leads to effective practice.

Developing a Smart Library Model in Vietnam Public Library System

The article outlines the development of Science and Technology and the advancement in information and communication opens up new opportunities for the change of public libraries. With the application of advanced achievements of modern technology, libraries have made significant strides in both operation and development scale. Traditional libraries have been replaced by virtual libraries and smart libraries. In order to enhance information resources in an "infinite way", create equality in accessing and exploiting information for all types of users, saving costs and avoiding waste, libraries are tend to link together, share and use the same library resources. Public libraries need to have intelligent library models that are innovative in thinking, technology and operating methods to be able to share invisible information resources to all users around the world without any problems or any barriers.

Librarians Innovatıon in the Federal Universities in Nigeria

The demand for new types of services from the users, change in technology application in university libraries, and inadequate budgetary provision faced by libraries has made innovation a necessity rather than a mere consideration by librarians in Nigerian universities. Innovation has become a veritable means of survival in the face of challenges facing library and librarians across the globe. The quest to channel information to library patrons spurred the creation of several innovative services that has facilitated the link between traditional library information services and emerging technological application. Therefore this paper investigated the innovation by librarians in federal universities in Nigeria.The respondents’ age was 40.58 ± 2.30 years and 59.1% were males. Respondents’ qualification were Master’s degree (62.7%), Bachelor’s degree (18.1%), Ph.D’s degree (13.5%), and M.Phil degree (5.6%). 654 librarians from the 40 federal universities in Nigeria formed the population of study and were enumerated. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics. 79.2% respondents filled and returned the questionnaire. The result shows that the level of innovation by the librarians in the federal universities is high ( =86.60).Different innovation strategies were employed by the librarians to market library products and services of their work place.Significant difference exists in the innovation of the librarians based on the universities. Therefore, library administrators should create conducive atmosphere where innovative ideas can be promoted and rewarded among the librarians.

The ABC method as a tool for blended learning course development at Bergen University Library

Embarking on planning and design of new library courses, or just even redesigning them, might be challenging in an everyday busy schedule. Especially if you want to try out new digital applications or features that could give the training an edge towards students, often prejudiced to what they can expect from a traditional library course. Ideally you engage colleagues and even students and faculty members in such a process. But how can you allocate enough time and resources to reach such ambitions? The ABC method, developed at University College London, is an effective, engaging and creative approach. In only 90 minutes groups are able to work together hands-on to create a visual storyboard outlining the type and sequence of learning activities aligned with the course’s learning outcomes. Blended learning and co-creation are often encouraged in course design in many educational institutions these days. The ABC method encourage also library instructors to think about e-learning tools, methods for active learning and opportunities for co-creation. Library courses, in difference from regular courses at universities, if often taught as a “one-shot-session”, and they rarely include formal evaluations. We therefore felt the need to adapt the method to better suit these circumstances. We adjusted both agenda and material, but all ideas and principles follow the original method. Evaluation showed good feedback regarding the proportion of participants who intended to change their course design after attending the workshop. This session will present the basic principles of the ABC-method and our experiences working with this approach to blended course planning.

Research on Digital Resource System Construction of Smart Library Based on Computer Network and Artificial Intelligence

With the development of science and technology, artificial intelligence has become one of the main driving forces for the development of modern society, and has also injected new vitality into the future development of libraries. Based on the high efficiency and scientific of artificial intelligence technology, the technology has been widely used in intelligent search and reasoning, machine learning and human imitation. In the “internet plus” era, the information service carried out by libraries has changed to a new intelligent information service mode. With the support of new technologies, the intelligent library has gradually become a new form of library development, showing the characteristics of digitalization, networking, intelligence and mobility. Artificial intelligence technology has changed the management mode, management content and service mechanism of libraries, and promoted the transformation of traditional libraries towards smart libraries. This paper first expounds the basic concepts of artificial intelligence and smart library, then analyses the constituent elements of smart library, and finally focuses on the construction method of digital resource system of smart library.

Development of postgraduate school’s digital library as a repository of digital collections

The development of information and communication technology offers advantages for library management. The ease of access to the internet makes it easy for us to access the library’s digital collection without any time and space limitations. Currently, many digital libraries have been developed in various universities to complement the existence of conventional libraries. This digital library’s presence can be a solution for traditional libraries to overcome existing limitations and constraints. This current study discusses how Universitas Negeri Semarang’s postgraduate school digital library is developed. The waterfall method and was used to guide systems development. This paper outlines how the digital library is used to give a portrait to the users of some features offered.

Indigenous Uses of Photographic Digital Heritage in Postcolonizing Australia

The process of “postcolonizing” continues in the former settler colony of Australia, entailing intense struggles over national identity and culture. Digital heritage plays a key role in these conflicts, in the form of historical and newer archives that have become increasingly important within Indigenous advocacy for recognition. Constructed from more traditional museum, library and private collections, these have become digital assets that now circulate in radically different ways—for example, as proof of identities, and links to Country. Since the late 1990s, as a result of postcolonizing advocacy by Indigenous people and cultural institutions in alliance with rapidly developing digital technologies, a profound shift in management practices has facilitated the assertion of control by First Nations people. These are exemplified by the Aṟa Irititja project, and its replicants, such as the Storylines project at the State Library of Western Australia. Digital heritage and digitized historical photographs in particular are now considered to be key resources for building Aboriginal history and identity, challenging oppressive state narratives and strengthening communities. Despite concerns regarding loss of culture caused by globalization and continuing inequalities, Aboriginal interests have drawn upon this expanded photographic digital heritage resource, to advance their rights through new temporal practices of production, circulation, and consumption.
