Real-time data access layer for MDSplus

Recent extensions to MDSplus allow data handling in long discharges and provide a real-time data access and communication layer. The real-time data access layer is an additional component of MDSplus: it is possible to use the traditional MDSplus API during normal operation, and to select a subset of data items to be used in real time. Real-time notification is provided by a communication layer using a publish–subscribe pattern. The notification covers processes sharing the same data items even running on different machines, thus allowing the implementation of distributed control systems. The real-time data access layer has been developed for Windows, Linux, and VxWorks; it is currently being ported to Linux RTAI. In order to quantify the fingerprint of the presented system, the performance of the real-time access layer approach is compared with that of an ad hoc, manually optimized program in a sample real-time application.

Phenotypic characterization and molecular taxonomic studies on Bacillus and related isolates from Phragmites australis periphyton

Reeds may play important role in the self-purification of aquatic habitats due to the filtration capacity and their periphyton communities developing on the underwater plant surfaces. The efficiency of this process and the transformation of organic substances can be influenced by the species composition and activity of microbial communities, including Bacillus and related species. For cultivation based bacteriological examinations reed periphyton samples were collected from 30 cm beneath the water surface of Lake Velencei and the Soroksár Danube branch (Hungary). After a primary selection 40 Bacillus and related strains were investigated by traditional morphological, biochemical tests, API 20E, API 50CHB and BIOLOG GP2 systems, and identified by 16S rDNA sequence comparison. The isolated strains were characterized by wide biochemical activity spectrum (i.e., the metabolism of carbohydrates and biopolymers) as well as widespread ecological tolerance based on their NaCl and pH range investigations. Species with facultative alkaliphilic features ( Marinibacillus marinus, Bacillus firmus) were detected only from the reed biofilm of Lake Velencei, while alkalitolerant Bacillus and related species from both sampling sites. 22 endospore-forming strains were identified as members of species B. cereus, B. firmus, B. flexus, B. licheniformis, B. megaterium, B. muralis, B. pumilus, B. subtilis and Marinibacillus marinus. Only one species, with 95–96% sequence similarities to B. pumilus was found to be common among the strains from Lake Velencei and the Soroksár Danube branch. Altogether, 18 strains could not be identified as known species of Bacillus, Brevibacillus and Paenibacillus, hence they may represent new bacterial taxa.

Dynamic simulation of the behaviour of pressure relief systems

Pressure relief of near critical processes working at two phase region is simulated dynamically. The design procedure for pressure relief devices is demonstrated by an example. The example shows that the required relieving area of the safety valve depends on time and scenario. This is the basis for the selection of the type and the size of safety valve. When the process relieves through the selected valve the outflow and the pressure of the protected vessel varies dynamically. This phenomenon cannot be discovered by the static approach that is normally used in the design of pressure relieving devices. The traditional sizing equations, API 520 and DIERS, are also difficult to apply in near critical region and they include coefficients that are sometimes difficult to obtain. The sensitivity may be so large that a different size of the relieving device is selected depending on the model. Usage of two common models, API 520 and DIERS, in the region of two phases is discussed.
