Abstract Side bearer pad is a typical structure widely adopted in the design of the bogie supporting the subway vehicles in US. This type of bogie should meet the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), so the safety of this type of bogie needs to be evaluated, especially the safety against derailment. Usually, the lateral and vertical force will be calculated from dynamics model by VAMPIRE or SIMPACK and the result compared with the Nadal limit to evaluate the derailment safety margin. Track condition, guard rail condition, wheel/rail CoF, side bearer pad CoF, speed are the major factors which affect the L/V. This paper will introduce the structure of bogie with side bearer pad and discuss the safety against derailment evaluation based on the sensitivity of the above factors.
