Logistic transportation role for sustainable ecotourism industry

Abstract Transportation plays a pivotal role in the industrial landscape, and the ecotourism sector, particularly sustainable ecotourism, is no exception. Sustainable ecotourism places emphasis on the responsible management of natural resources, aiming to foster comprehension, appreciation, and the conservation of both the environment and cultural heritage. The purpose of this research is to examine how the emergence of logistics transportation studies is driven by the transportation needs of island communities and tourists to increase sustainable ecotourism industry activities. Logistics transportation services that support ecotourism is a relatively new study of existing logistics resources in Indonesia. This study chooses sea transportation routes for the Karimunjawa Islands and Jepara. The logistics services for tourism transportation provided by the government and third parties pay little attention to sea transportation routes that pass-through conservation areas, namely the Panjang Island Conservation Area and Karimun Jawa National Park. Indeed, there has been a sea route provided, but several obstacles arose when passing through the conservation area. The establishment of novel transportation routes emerges as a viable solution for bolstering the sustainable ecotourism sector and addressing the transportation requisites of the local community. Additionally, these new transportation routes can yield positive outcomes for the safeguarding of conservation areas.

Problems of Tourist Transport in Dhi Qar Governorate in 2023

This research aims to determine the efficiency of the road transport network and to highlight the major road problems, as they play a significant role in the development and enhancement of tourist sites in Dhi-Qar Governorate. It examines the impact on various types of vehicular transport, given that cars offer unique advantages, such as door-to-door transportation and meeting the requirements of tourism and recreational activities at the destination. Road transport represents the primary foundation for tourism and its growth; thus, discussing the development of the tourism sector is incomplete without an efficient and advanced transportation system.The study explores the functional relationship between the elements of the car transport system and tourism activities at all spatial levels—local, regional, and international. This relationship serves as the theoretical framework for the role of road transport in creating developmental spatial benefits through road routes leading to tourist sites. These routes act as transportation hubs within the regional composite of Dhi-Qar Governorate, capable of generating and attracting traffic using car transport. Therefore, the study focuses on the major issues faced by the road network leading to tourist sites in Dhi-Qar Governorate. Dhi-Qar Governorate is among the prominent areas with tourism potential due to its significant archaeological sites, environmental recreational areas like the marshes, and religious sites that hold importance for many people.

Sustainability Challenges: How Public Transport Supports Eco-Tourism Industries

Abstract The public transport system is an essential aspect of the management of sustainable tourist destinations. A more efficient public transportation system enables better optimization to maximize economic earnings and support environmental and resource conservation. This paper presents a study analyzing the design of public transportation modes to support Eco-tourism industries in Gianyar Regency. This study employs the distribution of tourist destinations, tourist potential demand, and route optimation in eco-tourism tourist destinations using Vehicle Routing Problem. Additionally, a comprehensive analysis is undertaken to determine the emission cost of private vehicles and public vehicles. The results suggest that the planned tourist transportation involves using a medium size bus to travel from the tourist destination Yeh Pulu to Pura Tirta Empul with a total distance of 26.7 kilometers in the northern direction. Furthermore, the utilization of public transport in tourist destinations plays a vital role in mitigating traffic congestion and reducing the carbon footprint within the area. This is supported by the significant annual financial losses amounting to USD 341,303, which can be directly attributed to the emissions generated by private vehicles.

What drives tourists’ sustainable mobility at city destinations? Insights from ten European capital cities

The growth in tourism has brought benefits but also pressured urban transportation systems, particularly in capitals where it intersects with business and local life. While urban sustainable mobility development typically centers on the transportation needs of the residents, it frequently neglects the unsustainable travel habits of tourists. This study focuses on the key elements influencing sustainable tourist transportation, stressing the imperative for city administrations to tackle this concern. Based on a study of ten European capital cities and 5220 individual tourists, unique perspectives on urban tourist transportation are provided. Initially, a DCSM index (Destination City’ Sustainable Mobility Index) was crafted to mirror the sustainability of urban transportation systems, integrating data on cities’ transportation modes and factors promoting sustainable transportation while deterring unsustainable options. This index was then embedded in an ordered logit model, with the sustainable transportation choices of tourists as the dependent variable. The findings show that the traits of the destination city and the transportation preferences from the tourist’s home location, combined with accommodation and trip details, considerably influence their transportation decisions at the destination. These insights underline the potential to mold sustainable tourist behaviors by advancing environmentally friendly transportation systems, enhancing urban planning, and optimally positioning hotels. However, it is vital to acknowledge that without influencing tourists’ routine behaviors at home through education, their travel choices might persist. This research underscores the need for holistic strategies that integrate both destination-specific actions and pre-trip educational initiatives to truly promote tourists’ sustainable transportation behavior.

Perceived Quality of Service in Tourist Transportation in the City of Baños de Agua Santa, Ecuador

This study investigates the perceived quality of tourist transportation services in Baños de Agua Santa, Ecuador, utilizing the SERVQUAL model to assess service quality. Through an examination of the gap between tourists’ expectations and their actual experiences, the research aims to evaluate service quality. A survey of 203 tourists who utilized the “Chivas” tourist ground transportation service forms the basis of the analysis. The findings reveal significant negative gaps across all dimensions of service quality, indicating a shortfall in meeting tourists’ expectations. Notably, the reliability dimension exhibits the most pronounced gap, highlighting the importance of fulfilling service commitments to cultivate trust. The study underscores the crucial role of service quality in the tourism sector and proposes targeted improvements, including enhancing facility modernity, providing staff training, and enhancing service responsiveness and reliability. Addressing these gaps has the potential to enrich the tourist experience, bolster the positive image of transportation services, and enhance the city’s appeal.

Research on Wulong Tourism Service Experience Based on Network Travelogue

This paper analyzes 1,662 travelogues about the Wulong tourism destination from the Mafengwo platform using literature research and network text analysis. The goal is to identify the driving factors affecting Wulong’s tourism service experience and suggest improvements. By extracting high-frequency words and analyzing emotions from the travelogues, tourists’ conceptions and perceptions were identified and the factors affecting the tourism service experience in Wulong were summarized into six categories: tourism resource attractions, tourism transportation, tourism facilities and digital services, cultural charms, special cuisines, and environmental ambiance. Tourists’ emotional perceptions of Wulong are primarily positive, with negative perceptions mainly related to unsatisfactory tourism facilities and digital services in the Wulong scenic area. This study helps the Wulong tourist destination understand the issues and deficiencies in tourists’ service experiences, providing significant guidance for improving service quality and offering data support for service marketing and optimization.

Estimating hydrodynamic performances of the designed leisure boats: a study considering hull shape and dimension variations

Abundant marine natural resources make Indonesia have potential in the field of marine tourism. Karimunjawa is one of the regions that still relies on marine tourism as the main sector in supporting the economy. Unfortunately, the existing modes of marine tourism transportation are dominated by traditional ships that have low performance, safety, and comfort. Therefore, infrastructure development is needed by developing a leisure boat design that has stability and good ship movement so that tourists are comfortable and safe on the trip. This study focuses on optimizing the hydrodynamic characteristics of leisure boats with variations in hull shape and hull dimensions adjusted to the characteristics of waters in Karimunjawa. The research was conducted by designing and analyzing 16 variations of hull models based on 5 reference ships. The regression approach is carried out on the dimensions of the reference ship to obtain variations in ship dimensions, then variations in hull shape include deep v, shallow v, flat bottom and round bottom. Each model variation is tested for resistance, stability, and seakeeping to determine the hydrodynamic performance of each model. Multi Attribute Decision Making (MADM) calculations are carried out afterwards to get the best tourist hull design. Then a sensitivity analysis was carried out on each variation to determine the influence of variations in dimensions and hull shape. The results showed the Deep V D model as the best model based on MADM calculations and hull shape variations had a significant influence on the hydrodynamic performance of the ship. It is hoped that this model can help the development of safe and comfortable tourist boats in accordance with the characteristics of the waters in Karimunjawa.

Collective or Individual? Tourists’ travel mode choice during a pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) led to holiday journeys being associated with significant health risks. While there are numerous studies on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on travel mode choice in everyday mobility, there are a lack of studies on tourists’ choice of travel mode, even though tourism transport in Switzerland makes up 24% of all distance travelled. Based on an extended conceptual framework of the Health Belief Model (HBM), this study investigates the effect of COVID-19 on tourists’ intentions to choose a particular travel mode during the pandemic. Our findings show that the higher the perceived susceptibility of getting COVID-19 associated with the holiday journey, the lower the choices for collective travel modes. Furthermore, for those tourists who are more likely to take risks, their choices for collective travel modes are increased. The study recommends that public transport operators choose measures that increase the application of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) against pandemics while travelling; this may encourage the safe use of collective transport modes during a pandemic.

The (un)sustainability of rural tourism travel in the Global South: A social practice theory perspective

AbstractRural tourism transport provision makes sustainable travel challenging as evidenced by studies in the Global North. However, the nature of socio‐environmental challenges is different in the Global South, necessitating attention on resolving these different problems. Social practice theory (SPT) allows greater understanding of travel by considering the interplay between transport form and availability, the tourists' competences to make use of the provision, and the meanings associated with using it. Drawing from 31 semi‐structured interviews with tourists and destination stakeholders, this paper aims to explore and understand tourists' rural travel practices in Bali through a SPT lens to identify sustainable travel opportunities. Destination transport provision has evolved to meet residents' needs for travel and income generation, shaping the options for tourists. Motorbike and car‐rental allow tourists to achieve holiday needs and overcome travel limitations. Regional authorities need to address rural tourism provision deficiencies to tackle socio‐environmental sustainability in rural travel.

Transportation Mode Choice and Sustainability

This study conducted in Bandung Regency delves into the factors influencing the choice of transportation modes for tourists and provides practical insights. Specifically, the research examines the influence of park-and-ride security, travel time savings, and travel costs on the selection of private vehicles and shuttle buses. The findings emphasize the importance of sustainable transportation facilities and efficient public transport services, offering a practical roadmap for addressing transportation needs for tourists in Bandung Regency. With a focus on the park-and-ride concept, this research identifies and analyzes the factors influencing mode choice between private vehicles and public transportation. The study was conducted in Ciwidey, a natural tourism area in Bandung Regency, which offers diverse attractions such as nature-based tourism, ancient sites, culinary experiences, and water tourism. The findings of this research aim to contribute to the improvement of sustainable transportation and mobility choices for tourists while alleviating traffic congestion and environmental impact in Bandung Regency's tourism areas.

Tourism is recognized as one of the priority directions in the country's development. Its development is impossible without the development of relevant infrastructure and service industries in the regions. In this regard, transport services have a decisive role in the revival of the industry. Transport services for tourists in the Imereti region are mainly provided by private transport and tourism companies. In the research process, various options of the organizational model of cooperation of tourist and transport companies were developed for tourism and transport companies and their SWOT analysis was made. Modern tourist transport, regardless of its type, can belong to different forms of ownership. Transport services for tourists in the Imereti region are mainly provided by private transport and tourism companies. In the research process, various organizational models of cooperation of tourism and transport companies and their SWOT analyses were developed. Based on the conducted research, we obtained a specific scientific product, in particular: 1. Organizational models of tourism and transport enterprises in the transport services market were developed and their SWOT analysis was made. 2. In the Imereti region, such a form of relationship between entities in the market of tourist transport services is appropriate, such as the union of tourist firms and transport companies. This form of union solves some problems that arise in the process of tourist transport services, allowing tourist companies to work more efficiently, reduce costs, and increase the quality of service.

Tourism energy consumption estimation and driving factors of carbon emissions based on LMDI and panel data models

Tourism has had some negative effects while generating positive results. The carbon emissions produced by tourism, which is not a “smokeless industry” in traditional cognition, account for a certain proportion of the global greenhouse gas emissions. Tourism transportation, tourist accommodation, and other tourism activities all contribute to the carbon emission of tourism, and various tourism activities not only stimulate the economy but also increase air pollution. As a big industry, tourism’s growth and development have continuously increased energy consumption, and the pressure on energy conservation and emission reduction has also been greatly aggravated. In this study, the tourism carbon emissions in each province of China were estimated using a “top-down” calculation model, the tourism energy consumption factors were decomposed using a logarithmic mean Divisia index model, and the driving factors of tourism carbon emissions were analyzed through a panel data model. Results show that the tourism carbon emissions in China rapidly increased from 360.74 million tons in 2006 to 853.28 million tons in 2021. The driving factors of tourism energy consumption in China are economic development, energy efficiency, and population, while the inhibiting factors are tourism intensity and energy structure. The per capita GDP, the proportion of the tertiary industry, the turnover of tourists, and the level of urbanization all significantly promote the growth of tourism carbon emissions in China at 1%. The research results are of great significance to the proposal of measures for tourism carbon emission reduction in combination with the situation of various provinces and cities, promoting regional economic development and boosting the development of tourism in China under the background of a low-carbon economy.

Study on Spatial-Temporal Evolution, Decoupling Effect and Influencing Factors of Tourism Transportation Carbon Emissions: Taking North China as an Example

As global warming intensifies, reducing carbon emissions has become a global common mission. Tourism transportation is one of the important sources of carbon emissions, and reducing its carbon emissions is a key part of achieving China’s carbon reduction goals. Based on the panel data of various provinces and cities in North China from 2000 to 2022, this paper calculates the carbon emissions of tourism transportation by using the carbon emission coefficients of different transportation modes in different segments. Moreover, the temporal and spatial evolution of the tourism economy is systematically analyzed. The Tapio decoupling model and LMDI addition decomposition model are used to analyze the relationship between carbon emissions and tourism economic growth and the effects of 11 influencing factors on carbon emissions. The results show that: ① The carbon emission of tourism transportation in North China has experienced four stages: a steady growth period, a transitional adaptation period, a stable equilibrium period, and a drastic decline period. The overall carbon emission level of tourism transportation is as follows: Hebei Province > Shanxi Province > Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region > Beijing City > Tianjin City. ② The decoupling coefficient between tourism traffic carbon emissions and economic development fluctuates but mainly shows a weak decoupling state. ③ In terms of influencing factors, passenger size and passenger density have the greatest impact on the carbon emissions of tourism transportation.

Transport in the tourist services sector in Poland during the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic

Transport plays an essential role in the country's socio-economic development, as it enables efficient functioning of individual sectors of the economy. It is a factor enhancing the development of many areas of life, including tourist travel. A characteristic feature of tourism is the movement of people to places of attractive value. Therefore, transport is necessary for its existence. The tourist industry has been severely affected by the spread of COVID-19. The crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic has weakened the condition of the tourist services sector and affected transport. The article aims to reveal the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the transport sector concerning changes in tourist transport passengers. Data on tourist traffic in Poland was used in this publication. It has been shown that the weakening of tourism significantly translated into changes in the number of passengers traveling. The decrease in the number of people transported mainly affected air and road transport; however, more minor differences were observed in transport based on rail, sea, and inland waterways. The decrease in the number of recorded tourist trips was reflected in the shares of individual transport modes in passenger transport. In response to the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, travelers' preferences changed regarding their means of transport. Since mid-2021, tourism has been returning to the path of positive development, noticeable in domestic and foreign travel.

Pretos que voam – An Afrocentric Collective Project to Promote the Access of Peripheral Black People to Airline Crew Jobs in Brazil

Summary This case analyses the “Pretos que Voam” (Blacks who Fly) project, which aids the training of socially vulnerable black people to become flight attendants in Brazil. Since 2020, this project has been carried out by the collective Quilombo Aéreo, which brings together black crew members to aid the elimination of racism in aviation. One of the goals of this collective is to increase the representation of black people in the airline industry. Quilombo Aéreo ( 2022 ) conducted a survey of air crew members, using online forms based on self-identification, and found that black people do not reach 5% of active airline crews. The project is supported by crowdfunding and social partnerships like Fundação Tide Setúbal, Fundo Baobá for racial equity Rede de Mulheres Negras, Odabá Associação de Afroempreendedorismo, Movimento Negro Unificado and others. This made it possible to provide a complete course to become a flight attendant, a basic English course, air crew licences and a passport, and mentorship. In 2021, in Porto Alegre (RS), ten black people graduated in the first class – four women among them have already been hired by airlines. In 2022, the project raised funds to provide the first Afro-focused flight school in a distance learning model in Brazil. In 2023, they are working to start the operation of the school and crowdfunded a campaign for the second class of Pretos que Voam. Facing several forms of racism in Brazilian society and its airline industry, the project also dialogues with other forms of violence common in the sector, such as sexism and machismo . The case study examines concrete actions to transform the pain of its pioneers into fuel for structural changes, having as a framework the Afro culture and, as a scenario, a relevant mode of tourism transportation such as air travel. Information This case study originated from research into empowerment and intersectionalities between racism and sexism through the Quilombo Aéreo (see Further Reading). Here we focus specifically on the Pretos que Voam project, one of the actions developed by the collective. Corporate social responsibility bridges in the context of tourism service providers

This research focuses on the corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices of tourism service providers (TSPs – tour operators, travel agencies, tourism transportation agencies, among others). We analyse TSP’s collaborative efforts through CSR practices and their social, economic and environmental dimensions. Building on a qualitative framework, we conducted structured personal interviews with fifteen representatives of Jordanian TSPs. Several contributions are worth mentioning: the analysis allows for a broader understanding of CSR practices adopted by TSPs to serve as mutual support bridges between TSPs and stakeholders in the hospitality and tourism industry; CSR practices, benefits and barriers faced by TSPs; gender gap emerging from TSPs employment policies and intersectionality; TSPs and job and tourist opportunities for people with special needs; CSR practices, sustainability and community welfare, among others. This empirical article offers insights from Jordan’s small tourism businesses, a case previously not analysed. Limitations and implications for decision-makers are also discussed.

Cost-based distributionally robust tourist attraction recommendation with demand uncertainty

Tourist attraction recommendation (TAR) problem has gained attention due to its potential to enhance tourist services. Existing studies focus on meeting tourists’ individual needs, but overlook the tour operator’s interests as the TAR service provider. The TAR problem is more challenging due to the high variability of customer demand, which is difficult to predict accurately beforehand. This paper examines TAR in response to random changes in tourist demand, aiming to minimize transportation costs, cooperation expenses between tour operators and attractions, ticket booking fees, and promotion costs, where ambiguity set is defined by means, mean absolute deviations, and the support set. Firstly a distributionally robust model is proposed to identify suitable attractions for cooperation, along with determining the associated costs of ticket booking, promotion, and tourist transportation, while considering chance constraint on the service level. Subsequently, the model is reformulated into a tractable mixed integer linear programming model using duality theory. Numerical experiments illustrate that the proposed model outperforms both the stochastic programming model and the deterministic model in terms of risk level by out-of-sample test. In particularly, considering uncertainty and distributional ambiguity can make the model more accurate and credible.

Tourism Transport-Related CO2 Emissions and Economic Growth: A Deeper Perspective from Decomposing Driving Effects

This study explores the intricate dynamics of CO2 emissions stemming from transport within the tourism sector. It aims to unravel the multidimensional aspects of how transport-related tourism contributes to CO2 emissions and to elucidate the complex relationship between regional economic growth and CO2 emissions from transport-related tourism. Our study employed Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) and Panel Vector Autoregression (PVAR) models to analyze data from 30 Chinese provincial regions between 2010 and 2018. The tourism transport-related CO2 emissions were decomposed into four separate driving effects using the LMDI approach. Then, PVAR models were constructed to reveal dynamic interactions between each driving effect and per capita gross regional product (GRP). Our results demonstrate a decrease in both energy structure effect (tourism transport-related CO2 emissions from energy structure) and energy intensity effect (tourism transport-related CO2 emissions from energy intensity) during the pre-COVID decade. Notably, the positive impulse response of energy structure effect to per capita GRP is observed. However, we found no evidence of a cointegrated relationship between energy intensity effect and regional economic growth, although other factors demonstrated connections. These findings echo the necessity to integrate sustainable practices into the tourism transportation business, especially in the area of energy structure, in order to mitigate adverse environmental effects from tourism. This paper disseminates the main drivers of CO2 emissions in the tourism transport sector and their interrelationship with regional economic growth. It not only guides tourism policymakers in targeting efforts to reduce carbon footprints, but also sets a new benchmark for future studies on CO2 emissions.
