The Impact of Sustainable Tourism on the Economic and Social Development of Rural Destinations: A Case Study in Ecuador

A documentary review was carried out on the production and publication of research papers related to the study of the variables Sustainable Tourism, Economic Development and Rural Destinations. The purpose of the bibliometric analysis proposed in this document was to know the main characteristics of the volume of publications registered in the Scopus database during the period 2018-2023, achieving the identification of 135 publications. The information provided by this platform was organized through graphs and figures categorizing the information by Year of Publication, Country of Origin, Area of Knowledge and Type of Publication. Once these characteristics have been described, the position of different authors regarding the proposed theme is referenced through a qualitative analysis. Among the main findings made through this research, it is found that Spain, with 19 publications, was the country with the highest scientific production registered in the name of authors affiliated with institutions in that nation. The Area of Knowledge that made the greatest contribution to the construction of bibliographic material related to the study Sustainable Tourism, Economic Development and Rural Destinations, was Business, Administration and Accounting with 65 published documents, and the most used Type of Publication during the period indicated above were Journal Articles with 68% of the total scientific production.

The impact of cosmetic tourism across one year on an NHS breast surgery unit

BackgroundThis is a review of patients managed by our single-site breast surgery service for complications of cosmetic surgeries performed abroad and within the UK, across September 2022-2023. MethodsA retrospective review of outpatient clinic and emergency theatre lists was used to identify patients; data was collected from their electronic records. Results25 patients (23 female) were identified, 20 had surgery abroad. Turkey was the most common destination that patients travelled to (n=15), with bilateral breast augmentation being the most common procedure (n=15). Post-operative infection and wound dehiscence (n=10 and n=8 respectively) were the most common complications; 72% (n=18) of patients presented within 8 weeks of their surgery. There was incomplete recording of surgical details including precise date (recorded for 48%), clinic name (8%), and name of the surgeon (0%). 17 microbiological samples were sent, with 11 resulting in a named organism - Staphylococcus Aureus was most common (n=5). 17 (68%) cases were treated conservatively, without radiological or surgical interventions. When surgical management occurred (n=6), it was for removal of breast implants (n=5) or evacuation of haematoma (n=1). The cost of managing these complications was at least £37,000. ConclusionComplications from cosmetic tourism present more commonly to the NHS than those resulting from private surgery performed in the UK. This has significant financial implications for the NHS. More accurate recording of relevant data, engagement in audits, and disseminating findings may help raise awareness of the risks and complications of cosmetic surgery performed abroad.

Tourism is an essential sector of the global economy, contributing significantly to GDP and employment. Despite its importance, our understanding of its impact on urban economic activity remains limited. This paper aims to fill this gap by examining the impact of tourism on urban transformation using a dataset of hotel openings in Madrid from 2001-2010. I show that hotel openings positively impact the number of establishments and employment by using the number of protected buildings as an instrumental variable to account for the non-random distribution of hotel openings. Interestingly, hotel openings contribute to changes in the composition of the economic activities and the business structures, enhancing tourist-oriented corporate-owned businesses over other individual-owned companies. Finally, economic effects extend to the real estate market, increasing rental prices and residential investment.

A dynamic analysis of a tourism-based socioecological system

The study proposes a dynamic analysis regarding interactions between the resources provided by the forest, the wildlife present inside or in the proximity of that environment and visitors revolving around the before mentioned socioecological framework. The mathematical model is described by a nonlinear system with three differential equations. The discrete time delay is introduced to illustrate the entire past impact of tourists on forest resources and wildlife. The basic assumption is that the wildlife species which inhabit the area are relying entirely on forest resources to meet their needs for food, shelter, and to attract tourists. Also, there is a positive correlation between ecotourism activities and the presence of forest resources and wildlife. The equilibrium states are determined, and they are subjected to a stability and bifurcation analysis. The study employs a Hopf bifurcation analysis in the neighborhood of the equilibrium states by choosing the time delay as the bifurcation parameter. The critical values of the time-delay that lead to oscillatory behavior are determined. Numerical simulations are carried out to show the system’s qualitative behavior in the vicinity of the equilibria.

Black grouse (Lyrurus tetrix) population status, reasons for decline and potential conservation measures from Western and Central Europe to Fennoscandia: a literature review

The long-term decline of the black grouse population throughout Europe is influenced by many factors that affect populations differently depending on the distribution range, from Central Europe to the Scandinavian countries. Therefore, we analyzed available literature sources to describe the main reasons for the population decline of this species and to suggest conservation measures. In total, 228 pieces of literature from 1955 to 2024 were analyzed for this study. Based on the literature analysis, it is clear that the drivers of population decline differ across the distributional range. In Central Europe, where the population is declining rapidly, habitat loss and forest fragmentation are crucial factors, as is the negative impact of tourism. In Scandinavia, where the population is gradually declining, decreasing breeding success and increasing chick mortality rates are generally considered the main negative factors. However, these factors also affect black grouse populations in Central Europe. It is crucial to acknowledge that a significant proportion of the contributing factors, such as predation and habitat loss, can be attributed to human activities. Therefore, it is necessary to emphasize that environmental protection should work hand in hand with wildlife managers to improve the situation.

The readiness and participation of the community inbalancing their area to become a destination with quality tourism is needed.Therefore, community empowerment is needed, which aims to harmonizethe existing strategic plan for the community living in Braga Tourism Village,which requires readiness and participation in its development because thecommunity lives around an area with historical and cultural tourism potential,which of course needs to be preserved and utilized by applicable laws. Thecommunity needs to identify the potential and implement suitable programsbased on the concept and applicable laws. With this provision, it washoped that community-based tourism efforts would support the existenceof areas with potential cultural and historical attractions and promote qualitytourism. This community service program aims to provide material on theconcept of quality tourism and sustainable tourism. This program aimedto maximize the potential of the cultural history tourist attraction of BragaTourism Village, which then targets the community to understand and applythe material that has been given in the training. The activity method is inthe form of exposure to quality and sustainable tourism material to maximizeexisting potential. This program was divided into three parts: planningand preparation, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. This trainingprogram was well executed because the community had better post-testscore results compared to the pretest. However, they still need to learn moreabout the positive impact of tourism on the environment and its applicationin the community, especially businesses that support tourism.

The Impact of Tourists’ Perceived Value on Environmentally Responsible Behavior in an Urban Forest Park: The Mediating Effects of Satisfaction and Subjective Well-Being

Urban forest parks serve as significant venues for tourists’ leisure and recreation. The experiences and perceptions of tourists in these parks considerably influence their attitudes and behaviors. While numerous studies have investigated the functions and values of urban forest parks at a macro level, the mechanisms influencing tourists’ perceived values and their environmentally responsible behavior at a micro level remain under explored. This research used structural equation modeling (SEM) to test the association between tourists’ perceived values and their environmentally responsible behavior, including the mediating functions of tourists’ satisfaction and their subjective well-being. 502 valid questionnaires in total were obtained from Changpoling National Forest Park in Guiyang City, Guizhou, China, for this case study. The results show that there are some variances in the impact of the dimensions of tourists’ perceived value on environmentally responsible behavior, in which service quality, resource quality, and emotional value impose a pronounced positive effect on environmentally responsible behavior, tourism costs impose a pronounced negative effect on environmentally responsible behavior, and the activity experience does not exert a pronounced effect on environmentally responsible behavior. Satisfaction and subjective well-being have a mediating function during the process of positive influence of tourists’ perceived value on their environmentally responsible behavior and serve as partial mediators, and the significant positive influence of satisfaction on subjective well-being as well as subjective well-being on environmentally responsible behavior are verified. This research can help better explain the mechanism of the effect of tourists’ perceived value exerted on environmental responsibility behavior in nature-based tourism destinations, and also has a guiding and reference significance for the sustainable development of urban forest parks.

The Influence of Tourist–Environment Fit on Environmental Responsibility Behavior: A Moderated Mediation Model

Urban forest parks have emerged as significant tourist destinations thanks to economic expansion and the rise in free time. These parks offer tourists the opportunity to connect with nature. Existing studies have examined the value and importance of urban forest parks for tourists. However, there is a lack of research on the interaction between tourists and the natural environment and its influence on environmental responsibility. This study used structural equation modeling to explore the impact of tourist–environment fit on environmentally responsible behavior and the mediating role of natural empathy and awe in the impact of the above-mentioned relationship. In addition, the moderating role of tourists’ different cultural backgrounds (nationalities) was also analyzed. In this study, 509 valid questionnaires were collected from field surveys in April and May 2024 at the forest park of Lim City, Seoul, Republic of Korea. The data analysis indicates a notable and favorable impact of tourist–environment fit on visitors’ natural empathy, awe, and environmentally responsible behavior. Natural empathy and awe play a mediating role in the influence of tourist–environment fit on environmentally responsible behavior. It suggests that the fit between tourists and the recreational environment of urban forest parks promotes the emergence of empathy and awe and, thus, stimulates tourists’ environmentally responsible behavior. In addition, tourists’ cultural backgrounds play a moderating role in the influence of natural empathy and awe on environmentally responsible behavior. Compared to Korean tourists, Chinese tourists’ natural empathy and awe strongly influence environmentally responsible behavior compared to Korean tourists. This paper also explores the theoretical progress and practical observations that provide guidance and serve as references for the management and sustainable development of urban forest parks.

How emissions and distance do influence the choice of eco-tourists?

ABSTRACT Given the growing environmental impact of tourism, understanding how information influences tourists’ sustainable choices is essential. This study focuses on the relatively under-researched area of how information on carbon emissions and travel distance affects tourists’ environmentally friendly choices at destinations across various time intervals. Hypothetical dichotomous questions were employed in three online surveys with 991 participants. T-tests were used to compare the effects of carbon emissions and distance information over eight, five, three, and one-hour intervals. The results indicate that both carbon emissions and distance information positively influence preferences for environmentally friendly behaviour. Additionally, more available time can lead to less environmentally friendly choices. These findings offer valuable insights for policymakers and tourism stakeholders aiming to foster sustainable practices in the industry.

Analyzing the impact of tourism on Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) in Central Java Province

Indonesia is rich in natural resources, culture, and diversity in its social activities. This makes tourism a sector with potential as an economic booster. Central Java Province, in particular, is one of the provinces with a diverse and numerous array of tourist destinations. This diversity attracts both local and international tourists. Therefore, this research was conducted to determine the extent of the impact of the tourism sector on the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP). The analysis method used is multiple linear regression with a 25-year time series data covering the number of tourist attractions, number of tourists, number of hotel accommodations, number of restaurants and eateries, and tourism sector investments as independent variables, and GRDP as the dependent variable. The results show that the number of tourist attractions and tourists has a positive and significant impact, while the number of hotel accommodations, restaurants, and eateries has a positive but not significant impact. Additionally, investment in the tourism sector has a negative and significant impact.

Investigate the Different Impacts of Tourism on the Economy and Carbon Emissions of High Income and Middle Income Countries in Asia

This study investigates the dual impact of tourism on both economic growth and environmental sustainability in high- and middle-income Asian countries. Employing the Seemingly Unrelated Regression (SUR) method, the research analyzes panel data to assess tourism's influence on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The findings reveal that tourism significantly enhances economic growth in high-income countries, whereas its effect on middle-income countries is comparatively modest. Additionally, tourism is found to substantially increase carbon emissions in high-income nations, with a less pronounced impact in middle-income counterparts. These results emphasize the urgent need for developing and implementing holistic, sustainable tourism policies that address both economic and environmental outcomes. While the study offers valuable insights, its scope is limited to Asian countries, which may restrict broader applicability. The originality of this research lies in its integrative approach, advocating for policies that ensure tourism-driven economic growth is both inclusive and environmentally sustainable.

Rural tourism is considered a viable strategy for achieving sustainable rural economic development and poverty reduction, offering significant economic, social, cultural, and ecological benefits. However, as an external force, rural tourism disrupts the livelihood capital and strategies of farmers, significantly influencing their sustainable livelihoods. This paper uses the sustainable livelihood analysis framework from a micro perspective to assess rural tourism's impact on farmers' livelihoods, particularly in Jiwodu Village, Guangxi, China. By categorizing farmers based on the proportion of rural tourism income in their total household income—Tourism-related, Tourism-dominated, and Tourism-exclusive livelihoods—the study constructs a farmer livelihood capital scale, employs a participatory assessment method, and compares changes in the five major livelihood capitals before and after rural tourism development, exploring farmers' perceptions of its impact.

Resident well-being and perceptions of World Heritage Site management: divide between urban and rural WHSs

ABSTRACT This comparative case study focuses on residents’ subjective well-being (SWB) and their perceptions of conservation and tourism in two prominent World Heritage Sites (WHSs) in Turkey, i.e. (rural) Cappadocia and (urban) Istanbul’s Historical Peninsula, to evaluate them in tandem with their governance frameworks. A modified SWB survey instrument is administered to residents in both WHSs. The most notable differences in SWB surface in community, environment, and standard of living domains favouring Cappadocia – underlining tourism’s varied influence on SWB domains in rural and urban settings. While the perceived association between conservation and tourism is stronger in Cappadocia, Istanbul’s residents view conservation more positively. These differences point towards conservation’s perceived instrumental role in facilitating tourism development in rural WHSs and the disconnection of urban WHS residents from conservation efforts and tourism management. Our findings suggest SWB may complement tourism impact analysis and build a bridge between residents, policymakers, and administrators. Addressing the disconnection between residents and tourism and conservation-related frameworks and initiatives to increase resident awareness of heritage value are suggested as potential contributors to the long-term viability of WHSs as heritage tourism destinations.

Spatiotemporal Variations in Carbon Sources and Sinks in National Park Ecosystem and the Impact of Tourism

The capacity of carbon sinks varies among the different types of ecosystems, and whether national parks, as an important type of nature reserve, have a high carbon sink capacity (CSC) and whether eco-tourism in national parks affects their CSC are the main scientific issues discussed. Using MODIS Net Primary Production (NPP) product data, this study analysed the spatiotemporal variation in carbon sources and sinks (CSSs) in the ecosystem of Huangshan National Park from 2000 to 2020, as well as the impact of tourism on these carbon sources and sinks. The findings indicate that, while the ecosystems of national parks generally have a strong CSC, they may not always function as carbon sinks, and during the study period, Huangshan National Park served as a carbon source for four years. Temporally, the CSSs in the ecosystem of the national park exhibit a cyclical pattern of change with a four-year cycle and strong seasonality, with spring and autumn functioning as carbon sinks, and summer and winter as carbon sources. Spatially, the CSSs of the national park ecosystem exhibited a vertical band spectrum of spatial distribution, and the CSC showed a trend of gradual enhancement from low altitude to high altitude. Tourism is a major factor that has an impact on the CSC of national park ecosystems.

Examining the Mechanisms of Virtual Reality Tourism's Impact on the Mental Well-Being of Long-Term Care Facility Residents: Perspectives on Presence and Flow.

This study investigates the mechanisms of virtual reality (VR) tourism's impact on the well-being of residents in long-term care facilities (LTCFs). It aims to understand how presence and flow during VR experiences can enhance well-being. This experimental study used a quantitative approach with structured questionnaires to investigate VR experiences among LTCF residents in Taiwan. After obtaining ethical approval, 145 eligible participants from four LTCFs completed a full five-week VR tourism experience. Data collection took place from June to November 2022. This study employed Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with Smart PLS software to analyze the causal relationships between latent variables. The results confirm that the more vivid the virtual reality image (β = 0.240, p < 0.05), the more immersive the experience (β = 0.267, p < 0.05), the greater the ability to control the experience (β = 0.465, p < 0.001), and the greater the ability to stimulate curiosity during the experience (β = 0.290, p < 0.05), the greater the sense of presence. Increased presence leads to user engagement and a state of flow (β = 0.556, p < 0.001), which is essential for personal hedonia (β = 0.453, p < 0.001) and eudaimonia (β = 0.220, p < 0.001). This study elucidates the mechanisms through which VR tourism experiences enhance well-being among LTCF residents, emphasizing the critical roles of presence and flow in promoting both hedonic and eudaimonic dimensions of well-being.

Revitalizing the Sri Lankan Economy: An In-Depth Exploration of Gastro Tourism as a Catalyst for Upliftment – Visitor Perspective

This paper explores the transformative potential of Gastro Tourism in Sri Lanka, assessing its ability to attract visitors and stimulate economic growth through the rich tapestry of culinary diversity. This study investigates the personal meanings associated with gastro tourism experiences by utilizing qualitative methods to gather and analyze insights from a diverse cohort of Sri Lankan-bound tourists. The purposive sampling tech2ique ensures a comprehensive understanding, incorporating individuals with extensive knowledge of Sri Lankan food culture and exposure to global gastronomy. The data collection technique involves in-depth interviews, allowing for a nuanced exploration of participants’ perspectives on Sri Lankan cuisine and gastro tourism. To ensure trustworthiness, the study adheres to Tracy’s (2010) criteria, emphasizing credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. Thematic analysis is employed for data analysis, revealing five interconnected themes: Economic Transformation Through Culinary Experiences, Empowerment of Entrepreneurs and Small Businesses, Cultural Diplomacy Driving Economic Integration, Holistic Development, and Sustainable Growth and Rural Economic Upliftment. The thematic analysis underscores the multifaceted impact of gastro tourism on Sri Lanka’s economic resurgence, portraying it as a catalyst for economic vibrancy, entrepreneurship, cultural diplomacy, holistic development, and sustainable practices.

Air Transport Resilience, Tourism and Its Impact on Economic Growth

The aims of this study are to evaluate the influence of air transport and tourism on economic growth in selected Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore in the period 1970 to 2021. The study applies the ordinary least squares (OLS), fixed effects (FEM), and random effects (REM), especially to robustness test of the research results by deploying the DOLS, and IV-GMM regression for endogeneity and autocorrelation analysis. The research results confirmed that air transport has a significant and positive impact on economic growth, especially because the positive impact increased in normal economic conditions and decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, if the air transport recovers, it is likely to boost economic development. In addition, there is no impact of tourism on economic growth. The research results also confirmed the positive impact of foreign direct investment and international trade on the economic growth of Southeast Asian countries; however, there is a negative impact of renewable energy consumption on economic growth.
