Advantages and Challenges of Health Tourism Development in Croatia

This paper presents the advantages and challenges of Croatia as a health tourism destination. Croatia is a popular tourist destination where tourism significantly contributes to the country's GDP. Health tourism in Croatia is based on natural health resorts, preventative medical and rehabilitation programs, and various wellness offerings. However, the current state of health tourism is not very promising, as large medical institutions (such as clinical hospital centers, general hospitals, and polyclinics) show little interest. Previous guests have expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of innovation in the programs offered and the limited accessibility for persons with special needs. Significant investment in hotel and medical infrastructure is necessary to meet contemporary global tourist demand, including staff education and increased competitiveness in the international market. This research highlights the importance of health tourism as a selective type necessary for the current and future development of tourism at both local and international levels. The objective is to understand the existing potential of the Saint Nicholas Polyclinic and explore possibilities to further valorize health resources. The research methodology included a survey questionnaire, with results displayed graphically. The findings indicate that Croatia has the prerequisites for health tourism development, particularly in medical tourism. Keywords: tourism, health tourism, sanatorium, polyclinic, development

Residents' adaptation to intensive tourism development

Intensive tourism development in Croatia neither improved nor reduced overall life satisfaction; however, there was a modest but statistically significant negative effect on happiness. The residents were not entirely capable of managing emotional distress, with social psychological factors the main source of negative affections. While crowding stress negatively affected perceived quality of life, it was not an important predictor of support for tourism. Residents' support was not associated with the regional differences in perceived net benefits from tourism. The findings underline the importance of monitoring residents' psychological well-being, adaptation mechanisms, and the historical and social context in which preferences are formed. The risk of overtourism in Croatian destinations may be masked by the status quo bias and maladaptive coping mechanisms.

Tourism Development in Croatia – A Qualitative Study to Capture Perceptions and Current Challenges in the Tourism Industry

Despite structural problems, Croatia indicates further expansion. The trend of increasing GDP has continued in recent years. The tourism sector significantly contributes to this development. To give a more detailed insight into this, the authors spoke to tourism industry officials to obtain their assessment and experiences via expert interviews. The methodological approach chosen from qualitative social research aims to identify future challenges, strengths and weaknesses for the Croatian tourism sector and to make recommendations. Preliminary results seem to suggest that, despite the increased tourist numbers, there is doubt as to whether Croatia´s tourism industry will be able to stay competitive with other countries in the future. Clear strategic planning is one of the weaknesses of economic indicators, such as a lack of qualified personnel or tax policy imbalances. The work aims to provide a contribution to the empirical research of Croatian tourism and to advance findings in the geospatial field of future challenges. Sustainability aspects also play an important role in making the country fit for the future.

Is there room for eco golf resorts in the concept of sustainable development of tourism in Croatia?

Introduction: The concept for sustainable development of tourism in Croatia for the period until the year 2020 suggests the establishment of a favourable relationship between economy, ecology and tourism development. Croatia has predicted to connect strategic development to building mega golf resorts on the coast in order to increase accommodation capacities and overcome seasonality and to greatly increase income. Aim and methodology: The goal of this work is to show that building golf resorts might lead to long term unsustainability of the concept of sustainable tourism development. The method of terrain examination is used, as well as critical analyses of the available secondary sources. Results: Building an eco-golf resort on the island of Cres has been planned against the will of the local eco community. Although the whole complex is called “eco”, the project may lead to the devastation of landscape, loss of biodiversity, with the enormous consumption of water and energy, possible exhaustion of underground drinking water reserves and finally, bioaccumulation of chemical fertilizers and herbicides. Conclusion: Qualitative principles of development should be considered equivalent to the quantitative ones, and any aberration most seriously threatens long term development of tourism economy of Croatia as well as sustainable development in the whole.

Winter Tourism in Croatia: Is It Possible?

Tourism in Croatia primarily relies on the “sun and sea” product as the main asset of its offering. The current lack of adequate infrastructure, an underdeveloped winter tourism offering and the lack of stakeholders’ interest in developing winter tourism products are only some of the problems facing winter tourism development in Croatia. Winter tourism development does not include only snow-related activities but all outdoor activities, where weather and climate play a significant role. This paper analyzes the relationship between average monthly climate indicators in summer and winter periods and the number of overnight stays in Croatia from 1977 to 2014. In the regression analysis, we used a multivariate model with first difference specification and ordinary least square (OLS) estimation, in which past period of the dependent variable was also included. Seasonality was controlled by using quarterly dummy variable. The analyses for coastal and continental Croatia were made separately. Using regression and correlation analyses, we prove that Croatian tourism in the coastal part is strongly related to climate parameters while that influence in the continental part is less significant. The main hypothesis of the paper is that, with the increase in temperature, the tourism season will be prolonged in both the coastal and continental part of the Republic of Croatia. However, other interventions in tourism (such as raising the quality, expanding the offering etc.) can also increase tourism results since climate parameters do not have the same effect on the continental and coastal part of the Republic of Croatia. The impending climate change will cause climate indicators to change, thus unlocking the potential for winter tourism development in areas not related to the sea, but also requiring the development of various forms of special-interest tourism. Winter tourism in Croatia represents a big potential not only because climate change will potentially make winters in Croatia milder but also because, with the right policies, there is a huge potential to develop the undeveloped region of continental Croatia with products that would diversify the Croatian tourism offerings.

International tourism is gaining increasing influence on the country’s competitiveness in the world markets. The article is dedicated to Croatia, one of the most successful countries in the former Yugoslav republic. Its disintegration became one of the world’s national conflicts, where many human bloods were shed, by the way, it is similar to that which Ukraine is going through today. The Croats managed to put an end to the separatist conflict, embark on a plan for economic stability and enter the European Union. It was investigated that tourism was one of the priority development areas that the country focused on. It is determined that Croatia is one of the most important tourist destinations in the Mediterranean region, and the tourism industry is developing successfully and generating a stable income. The article considers the system of factors which became the prerequisite for the development of the tourist industry in Croatia. Their role in the development of the modern tourism industry in Croatia has been characterized. The main natural-geographical factors are investigated – relief, climate, water factor and nature reserve fund. It is determined that the advantage of Croatia is not only the clean and warm Adriatic sea but also the availability of thermal waters and mineral springs, as well as a unique natural reserve fund. The significance of human-geographical factors – socio-geographical position, historical-geographical, demographic, cultural-historical, level of socio-economic development, material and technical base and transport factors are revealed. Interestingly, the accession of Croatia to the EU was not prevented either by the territorial problems that the country had with Slovenia, nor the restrained attitude of the population towards European integration, nor the external debt of the country, which exceeded the crisis mark for the European Union. An analysis of the level of economic development in Croatia showed that Croatia had become one of the poorest countries of the EU at the time of its accession to this organization. The analysis of the main indicators of socio-economic development of the country in 2017 showed that today Croatia has become a very attractive European country, which tourists are willing to visit. The basis of Croatia’s economy is the service sector, whose share in the country’s GDP is 70.8%, of which direct revenue from tourism is 10.9%. The key factor in the development of tourism in Croatia is the material and technical base. In particular, the system of accommodation of Croatia for quality and service is not inferior to other European countries. Roads are the most modern and safe in Europe. The importance of tourism development in Croatia for the ecological and geographical factor is analyzed. It has been determined that an effective system of governance has been created in Croatia for the protection of the environment. Effective state tourism policy contributes to improving the attractiveness of Croatia in the tourist market and accelerates integration processes in the world economy.

UTJECAJ POREZA NA PROMET NA TURIZAM

Beginnings of taxation in Republic of Croatia with the value added tax (VAT) means a change from "paid realization" system to "invoice realization" system for hotel and tourist enterprises. Some problems with solvency and non liquidity are encountered in hotel and tourism business. Higher investments and use of higher amortization rates could be a way to reduce influence of the VAT. To achieve financial benefits it is necessary to change tax policy: reduce "from" salary and "on" salary contributions rates, to increase untaxable amount of income, to reduce the VAT rates for agriculture, food and tourism, increase tax allowances within the system of profit tax and income tax, etc. The other measures of fiscal policy are also necessary for development of tourism in Croatia.

TAXES AND TOURISM IN CROATIA

ABSTRACT In the latest extension of European Union, Croatia became its full member. Harmonization and adjustment process to the general European policy still lasts. At the same time, Croatia makes efforts to stabilize its economy, characterized by unemployment, lack of investments, high public consumption and decreased economic activities in general. In such situation, only tourism achieves positive results and it seems most of economic activities are directed to tourism. There are also great expectations from tourism, while is considered as possible generator of socio-economic development. Due to the actual impact on Croatian economy and society, tourism experiences certain changes, provided in order to improve quality of services and to adjust tourism offering to the current market trends. Therefore, tourism required different treatment which could stimulate its development and taxes in tourism are found as one of possible tools. Taxes in tourism could use as certain stimulus or benefit to tourism activities, although in actual situation where Croatian public sector significantly depends on the tax revenues and large tax levy, possibilities are limited. This paper provides an overview of taxes related to tourism in Croatia, analysing current situation in Croatia as member of EU. Contemporary Issues in the Regional Development of Tourism in Croatia

The aim of this research is an analysis of the tourism development of the smallest administrative units (towns and municipalities) as well as their typology within the Croatian tourism regions. The methodological approach is based on GIS analysis of seven relevant indicators of tourism development; this is a tool for defining typology. Such an approach helps in determining the conclusion concerning the role that tourism plays in each administrative unit inside the respective five Croatian tourism regions. Research shows pronounced differences in terms of the level of tourism development between the littoral tourism regions in comparison to the three continental regions. The differences are also visible when analyzing the level of tourism development of towns and municipalities inside the regions. Such a situation is a consequence of the concentration of tourism development at both the national and regional levels, which is more exaggerated in the continental parts of the country.

Sustainable Development of Maritime Tourism in Croatia 2007–2015

This paper’s objective has been an analysis of the sustainable development of Croatia’s maritime tourism. In order to define the main characteristics and determinants of the maritime tourism, a model of growth has been used. The evaluation and analysis of the relevant variables and the resulting growth rates have been aimed at a scientific formulation of the results of the sustainable development analysis of the maritime tourism in the Republic of Croatia. Combinations of a number of scientific methods have been used, among which the most relevant are statistical and mathematical methods, method of model drawing, analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction. The basic hypothesis has been confirmed through the direct growth rates of the chosen model variables. It has been confirmed that, based on scientific insights into the sustainable development of the maritime tourism, it is possible to suggest a new model of its sustainable development in Croatia for the period 2007–2015.

FOREIGN CAPITAL IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF CROATIAN TOURISM

Adoption of foreign capital and its orientation onto the most advantageous directions, in order to guarantee both the successful development of Croatian tourism and gain profit for the potential investors, represents one of the crucial factors in stimulating the development of the entire Croatian economy with the particular impact on the development of tourism in Croatia. Consequently, special attention should be paid by the relevant Croatian economic organs to the possibilities of the obtainable economic development and to the positive ways of taking advantage of foreign capital in the social development and the employment of home population, and simultaneously avoiding speculative foreign capital which can cause great damage to the Croatian economic system.

SUVREMENI TRENDOVI U RAZVOJU TURIZMA U EUROPSKOJ UNIJI I IMPLIKACIJE NA HRVATSKU

This paper researches modern trends in development of tourism in European Union, as well as the implication on the development of tourism in Republic of Croatia, because EU has become the biggest regional integration in the world, with its tourism market, while with its economical potentials it has become the biggest and most significant regional economic community which has influence on the development of tourism in Croatia. It is known that EU from 1st of May 2005 consists of twenty-five most developed countries in Europe, thus excluding Switzerland and Norway, which have more than 470 million inhabitants, and participate in the worlds tourism trade with more than 40% of tourism turnover in the worldinhabitants, and participate in the worlds tourism trade with more than 40% of tourism turnover in the world, while in European proportions with more than 75%. On the other hand by their expenditure in tourism, members of EU are among most significant countries in the world, because they momentarily participate with more than 45% expenditure in world proportions for foreign tourism, as well as amity countries in tourism are the most significant source in development of tourism turnover in the world and Europe. At the same time, EU earns from tourism more than 40% of the total income from foreign tourism in the world, while in year 2004 this income is valued at $526 million. In this context it must be realised that Croatia as a traditional Mediterranean destination from the tourism aspact is a significant partner to EU and its members. Croatia with its natural, capital and human potentials has great importance for development of tourism in EU, because in year 2004 it had the total tourism turnover in the amount of 5,8 million tourists, 25 EU members participated with 75% of realized tourism turnover, while in realized foreign tourism incomes 6,9, the ratio from EU was greater than 85%. Recognition of Croatia as a motherly-traditional tourism destination, which means recognition of all natural, cultural, historical, capital and human potentials, at this moment, makes Croatia the most desirable tourism destination in Europe and in the world. In this context Croatia is of first-class importance to EU from the tourism aspect and only by mutual activities and coordination between Croatia and EU, is possible to achieve the perspective that Croatia becomes the European California.

Turizam na seljačkim gospodarstvima u Hrvatskoj

Ruralni turizam u Hrvatskoj i turizam na seljačkim gospodarstvima nalazese u početnoj, pionirskoj fazi. Posljedica je to pretežite usmjerenostihrvatskog turizma na maritimne prostore, ali i desetljećima dugog procesazanemarivanja ruralnog prostora i obiteljskih seljačkih gospodarstava.Promjene društveno-ekonomskog sustava početkom devedesetih godina20. stoljeća bile su poticaj razvoju ove vrste turizma u Hrvatskoj. No iakočak 3/4 ruralnih prostora Hrvatske imaju obilježja socijalno-ekonomskekrize, ruralni turizam ne koristi se sustavno kao alat u revitalizaciji prob-lemskih ruralnih prostora.
