The performance of an open-faced, total inhalable dust, sampling head incorporating a 13 mm dia. filter was compared with the 25 mm dia. seven-hole sampling head recommended by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for total inhalable dust sampling. Side-by-side Static measurements were carried Out in a pharmaceutical factory using six sampling heads of each design. The results did not show a significant difference between the performance of the two designs when used as static samplers at low ambient air velocities. The 13 mm dia. total inhalable dust sampling head has some practical advantages over the larger 25 mm dia. seven-hole sampling head both in use and in worker acceptability. However, further studies are necessary to validate its performance as an inhalable dust sampler.
