A national DREEM: exploring medical and dental students’ perceptions on their learning environment across Hungary

BackgroundHungarian medical schools attract a diverse student body, enrolling numerous international and Hungarian students annually. The learning environment, encompassing all facets of their academic experience, significantly influences the overall educational experience at the medical schools. As the first nationwide survey, this study aimed to assess and compare the perceptions of international and Hungarian medical and dental students regarding their learning environment across the four medical schools in Hungary.MethodsThe Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) tool was used to get a better insight into the perceptions of international and Hungarian medical and dental students on their learning environment (LE). The questionnaire was distributed via social media platforms and the Neptun Educational System across the four medical schools in Hungary. To gain deeper insights into the participants’ perceptions, a qualitative component was also added to the survey, comprising five open-ended questions. The research was carried out between April and October 2022. To analyse quantitative data, IBM SPSS was used, while the transcription and exploration of the qualitative data was performed using the Sketch Engine software.ResultsA total of 1164 valid responses were received. The results illuminate similarities and differences in perceptions of the learning environment between international and Hungarian medical and dental students. As anticipated, international students’ perceptions were somewhat less favourable compared to their domestic counterparts, who are generally more accustomed to the workings of the Hungarian higher educational system (total DREEM score was 118.1 for the former, and 122.6 for the latter student population). Notably, significant differences were observed in perceptions of teachers and the overall atmosphere.ConclusionThe total score of the DREEM questionnaire was interpreted as “more positive than negative” for both international and Hungarian students, consistent with findings from other DREEM surveys, suggesting overall satisfaction with the learning environment. However, regular and ongoing evaluation of the learning environment is recommended in order to identify areas for improvement, ensure high standards of education, and continuously enhance the overall student experience.

Assessment of Perception of Learning by Undergraduate Dental Students in Delhi-NCR Region using Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract Background: Education in any dental institution and curriculum plays a vital role in the growth of students, which will help them acclimatize to the increased demand for dentistry. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the students’ perception of course curricula in three dental institutes in the Delhi-NCR region among undergraduate students and interns. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among undergraduate students from first year till interns in three dental institutes of the Delhi-NCR region based on the Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM) questionnaire. The DREEM questionnaire was distributed using Google Forms. Six hundred seventy students from three institutes participated in the questionnaire, and data were tabulated and subjected to statistical analysis by the Kruskal–Wallis and the Mann–Whitney test. Results: The total mean DREEM score was 158.8/200 in the present study, which is excellent. The overall scoring of the domain showed a significant difference for the fourth BDS for students’ perception of atmosphere (P = 0.001) and for the third-year students for students’ academic self-perception (P = 0.004). In the present study, all subdomains scored > 2, which means students had positive attitudes toward learning. Conclusion: Although students had positive learning perceptions in all three institutes, there were some problematic areas, such as stress during dental courses, for which policies should be formulated and implemented in dental institutes. The students were found to be too tired at the dental institute; they could not enjoy the program. Student-centered teaching programs can be employed to improve on the weaknesses of institutes.

Oral health students' perceptions of the learning environment in Australia and New Zealand: A DREEM study.

Oral Health Therapists (OHTs) are a growing workforce globally, with skills in oral health prevention, treatment planning and management of disease. These professionals receive their training through a three-year undergraduate program which leads to the Bachelor of Oral Health degree in Australia and New Zealand. The aim of this study was to describe the learning environment for OHT students in Australia and New Zealand. OHT students were requested to complete the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) to indicate their perceptions of the environment of their educational program. Bachelor of Oral Health students from 10 universities in Australia and New Zealand were invited to participate in the survey. The analysis of the students' experiences focused on five domains of educational environment: learning, teaching, academic self-perception, atmosphere and social self-perception. Total DREEM scores were compared to previously published literature for other health professions students. A total of 336 OHT students completed the study, which represented 30% of all OHT students enrolled in the 10 participating universities. Using the DREEM, participants perception of the environment was more positive than negative with an average DREEM total score of 141 (70.5%) out of a maximum score of 200. The model demonstrates university region to be a major predictor in the overall DREEM score, with regional universities scoring higher than urban universities (p = .012). The DREEM was used to describe OHT students perceptions of the learning environment in Australia and New Zealand. This study found that the university region is a significant predictor of positive experiences for OHT students. By identifying the strengths and weaknesses of contemporary Oral Health programs, this study offers insights into future improvements.

Students’ perception of the educational environment at King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for health sciences using DREEM tool

BackgroundStudents’ learning results are influenced by the educational environment. The best learning environment is created when students are involved in the evaluation process of their education. The purpose of this study was to evaluate students’ perceptions of their learning environment at King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS) in Riyadh using the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) instrument.MethodsThis observational cross-sectional study was conducted through an online questionnaire using the Arabic version of the DREEM tool. Students from six colleges at KSAU-HS Riyadh campus were asked to complete the questionnaire through emails. The study was carried out between November 2021 and April 2022. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics were performed for DREEM as both a continuous (two-way ANOVA test) and categorical variable (Chi-squared and Monte-Carlo test).ResultsA total of 370 students completed the questionnaire. The overall DREEM score for the study was 125.88/200, with a standard deviation of 58.79. SSP items received the highest scores, while SAP items earned the lowest scores. The college and the academic level showed statistically significant differences in the DREEM overall score and the five subscales, whereas gender showed no significant difference. The college of pharmacy scored the highest total DREEM score (140.35 ± 27.75), and scored higher among the five subscales than both colleges of dentistry (114.13 ± 29.74) and medicine (113.87 ± 33.03). Students in their third year had the greatest overall DREEM score (132.23 ± 29.76), and scored higher in SPL, SPA and SSP compared to students in their sixth year, in which the total DREEM score was (111.65 ± 27.58).ConclusionsStudents of KSAU-HS generally perceived the educational environment as having more positive than negative. The educational level and college differed significantly in the overall DREEM score and the five subscales. Junior students had better perception of the educational environment and they differed significantly in the SPL and SPA subscales. The faculty of pharmacy had higher scores in the overall DREEM and the five subsequent scales than colleges of dentistry and medicine. Further research is needed in order to optimize the educational environment by investigating different solutions.

Clinical Competence and Learning Environment of Primary Care Medical Students Amid Covid-19 Pandemic: Online Distance Learning Versus Face-to-Face Teaching

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly changed the learning environment for medical students and affected their academic achievement. This study aims to determine the student’s clinical competency, learning environment, and its associated factors during the primary care medicine posting amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study among medical students who had completed primary care medicine posting during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data on socio-demographic, posting characteristics, and students’ learning environment using the Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM) questionnaire and their objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) marks were collected. Independent t-test was used to compare DREEM scores between face-to-face and online groups. Multivariate analysis was used to determine factors associated with clinical competency and DREEM scores with p <0.05 considered significant. Results: A total of 205 students were recruited. Only 9.8% failed OSCE. Face-to-face teaching delivery (OR=3.61, 95 CI =1.03,11.30), face-to-face precept method (OR=1.24, 95 CI =1.12,12.51) and integrated curriculum (OR=5.23, 95 CI =1.03,26.47) were associated with good clinical competency. The total mean DREEM score was 72.94 (SD 28.8), with 89.3% having poor DREEM scores. Students who received face-to-face teaching scored higher in the Student’s Perceptions of Teacher domain compared to online teaching (p =0.036). Conclusion: Face-to-face teaching is preferred for good clinical competence and a learning environment. The impact of experiential learning was huge in our study, and it cannot be replaced by online learning. Furthermore, retraining teachers will improve the online learning experience for the students.

Gauging the learning environment at Damascus University Pharmacy School in Syria using the DREEM questionnaire: A cross-sectional study.

Introduction: This study was undertaken to provide the first record of evaluation of the educational environment of the Bachelor of Pharmacy program at Damascus University (DU), Syria using the internationally adopted Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) tool and compare it with other pharmacy schools around the world. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at DU Pharmacy School in 2022. The validated DREEM 50-item inventory was added to Google Forms and used to collect data electronically. River sampling and snowball sampling methods were used. Data was collected during the second term between April 2022 and June 2022. Students from all years were included. Results: A total of 269 students completed the questionnaire; that is about 6.7% of the total population. The Cronbach's alpha of the DREEM questionnaire was 0.94. The total DREEM score was 89.8±32.1/200. Senior students scored significantly less on the DREEM scale than their younger counterparts. DU Pharmacy School scored significantly less on the total DREEM score than its other counterparts around the world with a large effect size (d>0.80). All subscales scored below 50% and the lowest scoring subscales were students' perception of learning (SPL=41.8%) and students' perception of the social environment (SSP=42.5%). Conclusions: The findings implied that the educational environment is in need of major improvement, especially in areas related to teaching and learning practices and the general social environment; failure to address the current issues in the learning environment might hinder learning and clinical practice of the future generation of pharmacists. This study provides a quality improvement map which could be used preciously address the areas that need most attention at DU Pharmacy School.

Perceptions of Physiotherapy students about their teaching environment at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences in Malawi.

The learning environment is defined as an environment where teaching is taking place, as perceived by both students and teachers. A conducive learning environment is critical for successful curriculum implementation, which also affects students' academic performance. There have been initiatives introduced to improve the learning environment at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS). The purpose of this study was to ascertain physiotherapy final year students' perceptions of their learning environment at KUHeS in Malawi. This study was conducted at KUHeS among final-year physiotherapy students. A retrospective, quantitative cross-sectional design was used. The study utilised secondary data on education environment which had already been collected using Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) forms. There were 26 completed DREEM forms for 2019/2020 academic year. Demographic data were captured. Mean and standard deviation were used to analyse the DREEM scores. Inferential analysis was conducted with p-value set at ≤ 0.05. The total DREEM mean score was 120/200 which represented a positive perception of students learning environment. Students' academic self-perception scored the highest (69.13%), followed by students' perception of learning (61.94%), students' social self-perception (59.46%), students' perception of atmosphere (56.25), and students' perception of teachers (55.50%). Married students had negative perceptions (p-value = 0.05) of their teachers and students with previous college experience had positive perceptions of their academic performance (p-value = 0.02). Many statements under items of perception of teachers (mean score = 24) and social self-perceptions (mean score = 16) were considered negatively. Students in their final year of physiotherapy had positive perceptions of their learning environment. However, students' perceptions of their teachers and social life were low. The learning environment had a significant impact on married students and those who had no prior experience with college life. Faculty development initiatives should aim to improve these critical areas.

Evaluation of the Undergraduate Learning Environment at Dental Schools in Syria

The learning environment plays a vital role in dental education. A positive learning environment could improve students' satisfaction, psychosocial well-being, and academic achievement. This study set out to measure the quality of the learning environment according to the Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM) at different dental schools in Syria. The study included dental schools at Damascus University (DU), Tishreen University (TU), and University of Hama (HU). DU and TU are considered 2 of the largest universities in Syria. Students across all years of study were invited to complete an Arabic version of the DREEM questionnaire. In total, 1205 students completed the questionnaire: 650 were from DU, 309 from HU, and 243 from TU. Cronbach's alpha value of the DREEM instrument was 0.927. The total DREEM score for all universities was 108.8 ± 31.5 (n=1205), which is 54.4% of the total score; DU scored the lowest on the DREEM scale (105.9 ± 28.5) followed by TU (111.1 ± 34.3) and HU (113.3 ± 34.4). There was a significant difference amongst the 3 universities (P=.001) with a small effect size (eta-squared=0.01). At the subscale level, students' perception of learning (SPL) at DU and TU was perceived unfavourably, and the social self-perception of students (SSP) was negatively perceived across all universities. Clinical students scored significantly lower than their preclinical counterparts. No significant difference emerged between male and female students. This study provides a baseline data on the learning environment at dental schools in Syria. Although the study suggests a more positive than negative perception of the learning environment, Syrian dental schools scored considerably lower than their Arab and international counterparts. Aspects related to SPL and SSP were the most serious areas requiring improvement, and future research should focus on designing proper interventions to address them.

Medical students' perceptions of the educational environment in a private medical school in Southwest Nigeria.

The educational environment plays a very important role in determining the overall performance of students. The aim of this study is to determine the perceptions of undergraduate medical students about their educational environment in a Nigerian university. This was an observational, cross-sectional study conducted among final-year (600 level) undergraduate medical students. The Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) questionnaire was used for the study to assess the educational environment of the medical students. A total number of 100 final-year (600 level) undergraduate medical students participated in the study, out of which 27 (27.0%) were males and 73 (73.0%) were females with a male-to-female ratio of 0.37 to 1. The age range of the respondents was 21-30 years with a mean (±SD) of 23.54 (±1.403). The total mean DREEM score was 116.2/200. The total score of SPL domain was 30.2/48 (62.9%). The total score of SPT domain was 27.3/44 (62.0%), while that of SASP was 19.2/32 (60.0%). The total score of SPA domain was 26.6/48 (55.4%) and that of SSP was 13.1/28 (46.8%). For the SPL, SPT, SASP, and SPA domains, the score was above 50%. However, for the SSP domain the score was less than 50%. The total mean DREEM score in this study was 116.2/200, more positives than negatives, with the students' social perspective having the least domain score. There is a need to provide adequate social support system for medical students in general and particularly for those who get stressed.

Students’ perceptions of the learning environment at a medical school in Korea: comparisons of the most recent 4 years’ results using the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM)

Background: The learning environment is an essential factor influencing students’ educational processes and personal quality of life. The purpose of this study was to examine medical students’ perceptions of the learning environment at a medical school over the most recent 4 years and explore possibilities for learning environment reform and revision based on the results.Methods: Participating students were asked about their perceptions of the learning environment using the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) questionnaire, which was distributed to first-year, third-year, and fourth-year students, representing each learning period. In total, 349 students participated in this study. Analysis of variance was conducted to determine differences in DREEM scores among years and learning periods.Results: There were no statistically significant differences in DREEM scores by year and learning period, except for students’ perceptions of teachers and students’ perceptions of atmosphere. However, in an analysis of differences in DREEM scores in the class of 2018 cohort by learning period, four domains of the DREEM (except for students’ academic self-perceptions) and the total DREEM score were found to be significantly different.Conclusions: Students’ perceptions of the learning environment at Kosin University College of Medicine were relatively high. The total score increased from 2019 to 2022, except for 2021. Another significant result was that basic science students had the highest perceptions, whereas students in basic clinical science had the lowest perceptions. To improve the learning environment for medical students, continuing support for students’ emotional stability, learning motivation, physical environment, social relationships, and counseling is essential.

Students\u2019 perception of educational environment based on Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure and the role of peer mentoring: a cross-sectional study

ObjectiveThe curricular reform at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), Iran, has been implemented since 2011 when peer mentoring program started. The program is believed to have a crucial role in students’ perception of the educational environment (EE). We aimed to determine how students perceive the educational environment and compared the mentees and non-mentees’ perception of EE.MethodsA cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 190 first-year medical students enrolling at Tehran University of Medical Sciences from March to September 2019. A questionnaire was used to collect information on students’ age, gender, marital status, dormitory status, and their mentoring status including satisfaction of mentor-mentee relationship. The study also employed Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM). The collected data were then entered and analysed using SPSS version 20. To compare the perception of EE between mentees and non-mentees, we used independent t-test.ResultsThe mean (SD) for total DREEM score for EE was 144.1 (19.3), which signifies a more positive than negative educational environment perception. Nonetheless, the mean scores of total DREEM was not significantly different between students with or without mentors (P =0.390). The overall mean score for student perceptions of learning for mentees was 32.47 (4.5) while for those without a mentor, the score was 31.70 (4.9) (P =0.491). The items concerned with “emphasizing factual learning” and “teacher-based teaching” were rated the least. The item “having an appropriate support system” was scored significantly different between students with or without mentors (P =0.009).ConclusionsSince having an appropriate support system was significantly different between groups, we suggest curriculum designers focus on the above-mentioned issue under caption for improvement during the reform programs.

Nurse students' perception of the academic learning environment in Tunisian institutes of nursing sciences: A multisite cross-sectional study

BackgroundA learning environment is an important determinant of students' learning behaviours, professional competencies, and academic performances. It is also an essential indicator of the quality of teaching programmes. To date, there is not a Tunisian study, that analysed nurse students' perceptions of the educational environment. AimsThis study aimed to assess the perception of Tunisian higher nursing institutes students regarding the quality of the learning environment, and identify the factors associated with it. DesignMulti-site cross-sectional survey. SettingFive universities of nursing sciences in Tunisia. ParticipantsUndergraduate nursing students (n = 736). MethodsA cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted during the academic year 2019–2020. The Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM) questionnaire was used to describe the students' perceptions of the learning environment. The participants were recruited using a convenience sampling method. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 20. One-way analysis of variance and t-test were used to compare the DREEM scores and socio-demographic/academic characteristics. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered significant. ResultsThe mean overall DREEM score was 110.92 ± 20.55, indicating a positive perception of the learning environment. The year of study was significantly associated with total DREEM scores, with first-year students scoring higher than third- and second-year students (p = 0.035). The perception of the learning environment varied significantly among the five institutes (p < 10−3). Demotivated atmosphere, lack of a support system, poor timetable organisation, and teacher-centred learning were revealed as problematic areas that needed improvement (individual score < 2). Our adapted version of the DREEM obtained acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.881). ConclusionsThe study reported positive perceptions of the students regarding their academic learning environment. However, the DREEM scores reflected a traditional learning environment. It is essential to re-engineer the curriculum and shift the teaching paradigm towards ‘student-centred curriculum’ to enhance both the effectiveness and the efficiency of the learning environment.

Students Dreem From Pre-Clinical To Clinical Years-A Cross Sectional Analysis From Rehman Medical College, Peshawar.

Educational environment is a key indicator of student learning and reflects quality of education and curriculum. With the boom of medical colleges in the private sector, parents put great stress on education and educational environment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in perceptions regarding educational environment between pre-clinical and clinical year MBBS students and to determine year wise strengths and weaknesses of the MBBS program. The study utilized the cross-sectional study design and employed, "Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM) questionnaire. The survey included 142 pre-clinical (1st and 2nd year MBBS) and 185 clinical students (3rd to Final year MBBS). The total DREEM score for the program was 119/200. Total score for pre-clinical years was 120/200 and that for clinical years was 118/200. There was no statistically significant difference between students' perceptions of pre-clinical and clinical years. When the sub scale analysis was done, perceptions of learning (POL) (p=0.007), perceptions of teachers (POT) (p=0.003) and social self-perception (SSP) (p=0.025) scales showed statistically significant difference between pre-clinical and clinical years. Academic self-perception (ASP) and perceptions of atmosphere (POA) showed no statistically significant difference. About the educational environment perception students regarded it as more positive than negative. Pre-clinical students were more satisfied than clinical students except for SSP scale. Students pointed out weaknesses in the curriculum especially for teaching and learning and in the atmosphere, more so for clinical students than pre-clinical students. Findings of this study guide that emphasis shall be put on teaching development and CME activities and regular feedback mechanisms for both students and faculty members.

Perception of 1 MBBS students about educational environment through ‘DREEM’ questionnaire

In an undergraduate (UG) medical education program, the educational environment is a critical factor of effective outcomes. Because it is a proven approach for this assessment in medical schools, the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) was employed in this study.1. To assess the student’s perception of the educational environment using the Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM) questionnaire among 1st-year undergraduate medical students. 2. To identify the strengths and weaknesses in student’s educational environment.A cross-sectional study was carried out among first-year medical students. To obtain student perceptions of the educational environment, a widely accepted DREEM questionnaire was employed. The DREEM questionnaire is divided into five sections, each of which has 50 statements that are rated on a five-point Likert scale (0–4). The questionnaire was distributed to consented individuals (n=150) after receiving ethical approval. The filled questions were collected and statistically evaluated. The data were presented as mean and standard deviation, frequency, and percentages. The responses were analyzed and interpreted using McAleer and Roff's practical recommendations.There was a 100% response rate. The average DREEM score was 124.9 ± 50 (62.46%). Among the five DREEM dimensions, students' perceptions of learning received the highest score (65.63%), while students' perceptions of the environment received the lowest (59.31 %).Statements “I have good friends in this college”, “My social life is good” and “I am confident about passing this year” scored ≥ 3 of 4 points.“A more positive than negative perception,” according to the total mean DREEM score. Student confidence, social life, instructor knowledge, encouragement to participate in a teaching session, teacher preparedness, and having excellent friends on campus received the most positive answers. However, there is space for development in areas where there is a lack of expertise, such as student ennui and creative teaching.

Assessment of Medical Students’ Perception Regarding Educational Environment at Different Phases of Medical Education in a Tertiary Centre Medical College using Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM) Questionnaire

The educational environment in a medical school is a crucial component in a student's learning and is also important in the development of personality, behavior, and work ethics. The objective of the study was to assess the perception of the educational environment among medical students. An observational cross-sectional study conducted on second, fourth, sixth, eighth semesters and interns. Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) inventory was used as study tool which contains 50 items and is subdivided into five domain subscales: students’ perceptions of learning (SPoL); students’ perceptions of teachers (SPoT); students’ academic self-perception (SASP); students’ perceptions of the atmosphere (SPoA); and students' social self-perception (SSSP). Data were presented as Mean+/-SD and analyzed using descriptive statistics. A total of 449 undergraduates of age group 18 to 25 years participated, the majority were males (72.6%) and studied from private (82%) and English medium schools (75%) without any additional qualifications (99.6%). The mean total DREEM score±SD was 130.85±19.24 and there was a significant difference between males and females (p=0.029). The mean total subscale scores (SD) were: SPoL=33.37(5.89), SPoT=27.95(3.98), SASP=21.41(4.47), SPoA=30.15(5.78) and SSSP=17.97(3.20). The mean total DREEM score ± SD of the fourth semester (134.45±19.02) was highest and the eighth semester (125.71±21.55) was the lowest and there was a significant difference between scores of various semesters(p=0.016). On analyzing the total DREEM score, 61 students had scores in 'excellent', 363 in 'more positive than negative', and 25 in the 'plenty of problems’ category. The educational environment perceived by the medical undergraduates more positive than negative. The study findings would help modify the learning environment and curriculum.

Perception of educational environment as a predictor of academic performance in physiotherapy students.

BACKGROUND:Students' perception of their academic environment has a substantial influence on their actions, academic accomplishments, satisfaction, goal attainment, and behavior. The study was carried out to evaluate the perception of academic environment in physiotherapy students, and to identify the specific domains which could act as predictors of academic performance.MATERIALS AND METHODS:This descriptive, cross-sectional research was conducted over 12 months using total population sampling. Three hundred and forty-three (139 postgraduate and 204 final year) final year and postgraduate physiotherapy students from five colleges of Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, who conformed to the inclusion benchmarks, participated in the study. Perception of educational environment was evaluated using Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM). Academic performance was evaluated using the percentage obtained in the last university examination. Data were entered in MS Excel (©Microsoft, USA) and converted to Stata Version 15.1© StataCorp, College Station, for further analysis. The mean values and standard deviations for perception of educational environment were calculated and linear regression models were used to conduct multivariate analysis for each item in the questionnaire.RESULTS:The mean total DREEM score of physiotherapy students was 129.97 ± 22.72. Students whose Students' Academic Self-perception scores were in the “Feeling more on the positive side” category showed a 4.17 point increase in percentage scores as compared with those who reported feeling like a total failure/had many negative aspects to their academic self-perception (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.46, 5.89; P < 0.001). Students whose Students' Perception of Learning (SPoL) scores were in the “Teaching highly thought of” category showed a 2.75 point increase in percentage scores as compared with those who viewed teaching poorly/negatively (95% CI: 0.44, 5.06; P = 0.02).CONCLUSION:Physiotherapy students had a “more positive than negative” view of the academic environment; however, a few “problematic areas” need to be remediated. Efforts to improve students' academic self-perception may improve their academic performance since this was the strongest predictor of their academic performance, followed by total DREEM scores and SPoL.

Using Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure to evaluate educational environments in Saudi Arabia

Background: Students&amp;apos; behavior is influenced by their learning environment. Thus, the study aimed to compare the perception of the learning environment of pre-clinical medical students at King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAUHS) based on their stream, gender, and batch using Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at KSAUHS. Data were collected from all pre-clinical high school entries (stream1) and postgraduate entries (stream2) in the third and fourth years. The questionnaire was distributed to participants simultaneously using a non-probability, convenient sampling technique. Results: The questionnaire was completed by 290 students. There were 162 (55.9%) males and 128 (44.1%) females. Based on their educational background, 237 (81.7%) were stream1 and 53 (18.7%) were stream2, and batches 14 (39.3%) and 15 (60.7%). The overall score of this study was 110/200 and there was no statistically significant difference between genders and batches. The only statically significant difference was within streams; stream2 total DREEM score and students&amp;apos; perception of learning was lower than stream1. Conclusion: The areas of improvement and research were seen by comparing various batches, genders, and streams of preclinical medical students, through the application of the DREEM inventory. Further research involving the perception of clinical year students is required.

Perception of Medical Students towards Teaching and Training at Public and Private Medical Colleges of Peshawar Using Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure

The importance of teaching and training quality has been acknowledged as critical for successful learning and practical skill development. The perceptions of medical students toward teaching and training offer a good basis for altering and refining the quality of medical teaching. The purpose of this study was to analyses students' perceptions of teaching also training at public and private medical colleges of Peshawar, Pakistan. Materials and Methods: The Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM) questionnaire was given to 240 pupils from various public and private medical schools. The questionnaire has 27 items that were rated on an 0-4 Likert scale (total scores between 0-108). The questionnaire had five subscales that assessed students' perceptions of learning, teaching, environment, academic self-perception, and social self-perception. Data was collected and mean and standard deviation for each subscale was calculated using SPSS. Results: The total mean score of DREEM both public and private was 64/108 (59%). The total mean score for public and private was 65/108 (60%) and 62/108 (57%) respectively. The total score of SPL domain for public and private was 16.81/28 (61%) and 16.09/28 (57%). The total score of SPT was 19.52/32 (61%) for pubic and 19.67/32 (61%), while that of SASP was 5.02/8 (62%) and 4.33/8 (54%). The total score of SPA domain was 19.31/32 (60%) and 17.91/32 (55%) while that of SSSP was 4.9/8 (61%) and 4.49/8 (56%) for public and private medical colleges respectively. For SPA, SSSP, SASP, SPL and SPT domain the score of public medical colleges was ≥60% and for private only SPT was 61% and the remaining were &lt;60%. Conclusions: Total DREEM score was 64.02 which are more positive than negative. However, the individual scores of domains for both public and private medical colleges were showing a positive perception of students except the SASP domain for private medical colleges, which is showing many negative aspects and needs further exploration.

Exploring the perceptions of the educational environment in online acupuncture learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students have had to adapt to a "new normal" of online education at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. This poses a considerable challenge to the conduct of online acupuncture courses. Here, we provide our experience and guidance for conducting an online experimental acupuncture course during the COVID-19 pandemic. We aimed to compare the different perceptions of undergraduates to the educational environment between online and face-to-face learning approaches. This study included senior undergraduates majoring in acupuncture during the academic years 2015 (face-to-face) and 2020 (online only) for the Experimental Acupuncture course. A survey was conducted at the end of this course. The Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM) questionnaire was used to assess students' perceptions. The results of students' responses to online learning were compared with those assessed for face-to-face learning. In total, 56/70 (80%) students in 2015 and 49/54 (91%) students in 2020 completed the questionnaire, respectively. Total DREEM scores were higher in the online learning group than in the face-to-face learning group (160.3 ± 21.9 vs 147.6 ± 17.9, p = 0.007), with improved students' perceptions on four out of five dimensions (social self-perception, learning, atmosphere and academic self-perception). The positive aspects of their online learning experience included the acquisition of new knowledge and skills. The significant limitations of this course included the lack of practical classes. Students' perceptions regarding the Experimental Acupuncture program were satisfactory for both online and face-to-face learning approaches, but even better with online learning. Online learning may be encouraged in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) education. However, a combination of face-to-face and online methods is likely to be required to maximize the benefits. We hope that our online Experimental Acupuncture program practices may assist in the development of online curricula for acupuncture during the COVID-19 pandemic.
