Distribution patterns and origins of organophosphate esters in soils from different climate systems on the Tibetan Plateau

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are extensively applied in various materials as flame retardants and plasticizers, and have high biological toxicity. OPEs are detected worldwide, even in distant polar regions and the Tibetan Plateau (TP). However, few studies have been performed to evaluate the distribution patterns and origins of OPEs in different climate systems on the TP. This study investigated the distribution characteristics, possible sources, and ecological risks of OPEs in soils from the different climate systems on the TP and its surroundings. The total concentrations of OPEs in soil varied from 468 to 17,451 pg g-1 dry weight, with greater concentrations in southeast Tibet (monsoon zone), followed by Qinghai (transition zone) and, finally, southern Xingjiang (westerly zone). OPE composition profiles also differed among the three areas with tri-n-butyl phosphate dominant in the westerly zone and tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate dominant in the Indian monsoon zone. Correlations between different compounds and altitude, soil organic carbon, or longitude varied in different climate zones, indicating that OPE distribution originates from both long-range atmospheric transport and local emissions. Ecological risk assessment showed that tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate and tri-phenyl phosphate exhibited medium risks in soil at several sites in southeast Tibet. Considering the sensitivity and vulnerability of TP ecosystems to anthropogenic pollutants, the ecological risks potentially caused by OPEs in this region should be further assessed.

Influence of watershed characteristics and human activities on the occurrence of organophosphate esters related to dissolved organic matter in estuarine surface water

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are widespread in aquatic environments and pose potential threats to ecosystem and human health. Here, we profiled OPEs in surface water samples of heavily urbanized estuaries in eastern China and investigated the influence of watershed characteristics and human activities on the spatial distribution of OPEs related to dissolved organic matter (DOM). The total OPE concentration ranged from 22.3 to 1201 ng/L, with a mean of 162.6 ± 179.8 ng/L. Chlorinated OPEs were the predominant contaminant group, accounting for 27.4–99.6 % of the total OPE concentration. Tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate, tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate, and tributyl phosphate were the dominant compounds, with mean concentrations of 111.2 ± 176.0 ng/L, 22.6 ± 21.5 ng/L, and 14.8 ± 14.9 ng/L, respectively. Variable OPE levels were observed in various functional areas, with significantly higher concentrations in industrial areas than in other areas. Potential source analysis revealed that sewage treatment plant effluents and industrial activities were the primary OPE sources. The total OPE concentrations were negatively correlated to the mean slope, plan curvature, and elevation, indicating that watershed characteristics play a role in the occurrence of OPEs. Individual OPEs (triisobutyl phosphate, tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate, tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate, and tricresyl phosphate) and Σalkyl-OPEs were positively correlated to the night light index or population density, suggesting a significant contribution of human activity to OPE pollution. The co-occurrence of OPEs and DOM was also observed, and the fluorescence indices of DOM were found to be possible indicators for tracing OPEs. These findings can elucidate the potential OPE dynamics in response to DOM in urbanized estuarine water environments with intensive human activities.

Study of the Spatiotemporal Variations, Source Determination, and Potential Ecological Risk of Organophosphate Esters in Typical Coastal Tourist Resorts in China

Investigation of the environmental occurrence and behavior of organophosphate esters (OPEs) is very important and is becoming a hot topic in the academic community. In this study, 12 targeted OPEs in the water and sediment from 19 coastal tourist resorts in the Shandong Peninsula in China were analyzed to show their concentrations, spatial variations, and potential ecological risks. The results showed that the total concentrations of OPEs (ΣOPEs) were in the range of 18.52–3069.43 ng/L in the water and 3.20–568.76 ng/g in the sediment. The dominant OPEs in the water and sediment were tris (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP), tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), and triethyl phosphate (TEP). The OPE concentrations in the water were ranked as dry season > normal season > wet season. The sewage treatment plants near tourist resorts were important contributors to the level of OPEs in the water. Triphenyl phosphate (TPHP), tri-n-butyl phosphate (TNBP), and resorcinol-bis(diphenyl)phosphate (RDP) had a relatively higher ecological risk than other OPEs in the water samples. Industrial emissions might be the main source of OPEs in the coastal tourist resorts of Shandong Peninsula in China. The results of this study verified that OPEs occur in the water and sediment of coastal tourist resorts, and more attention should be given to the existence of OPEs and the safety of aquatic environments near coastal tourist resorts.

New Perspective to Understand and Prioritize the Ecological Impacts of Organophosphate Esters and Transformation Products in Urban Stormwater and Sewage Effluents.

Due to their prevalence in urban contaminated water, the driving factors of organophosphate esters (OPEs) need to be well examined, and their related ecological impacts should include that of their transformation products (TPs). Additionally, a robust framework needs to be developed to integrate multiple variables related to ecological impacts for improving the ecological health assessment. Therefore, OPEs and TPs in urban stormwater and wastewater in Hong Kong were analyzed to fill these gaps. The results revealed that the total concentrations of OPEs in stormwater were positively correlated with the area of transportation land. Individual TP concentrations and the mass ratios of individual TPs/OPEs were somewhat higher in sewage effluents than that in stormwater. OPEs generally showed relatively higher risk quotients than TPs; however, the total risk quotients increased by approximately 38% when TPs were factored in. Moreover, the molecular docking results suggested that the investigated TPs might cause similar endocrine disruption in marine organisms as their parent OPEs. This study employed the Toxicological-Priority-Index scheme to successfully integrate the ecological risks and endocrine-disrupting effects to refine the ecological health assessment of the exposure to OPEs and their TPs, which can better inform the authority on the prioritization for regulating these contaminants of emerging concern in urban built environments.

Spatiotemporal variations and the ecological risks of organophosphate esters in Laizhou Bay waters between 2019 and 2021: Implying the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are a group of synthetic chemicals used in numerous consumer products such as plastics and furniture. The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic significantly slowed anthropogenic activities and reduced the emissions of pollutants. Meanwhile, the mismanagement of large quantities of disposable plastic facemasks intensified the problems of plastic pollution and leachable pollutants in coastal waters. In this study, the joint effects of the COVID-19 outbreak on the occurrence of 12 targeted OPEs in the waters of Laizhou Bay (LZB) were investigated. The results showed that the median total OPE concentrations were 725, 363, and 109 ng L−1 in the sewage treatment plant effluent, river water, and bay water in 2021, decreased significantly (p < 0.05) by 67%, 68%, and 70%, respectively, compared with those before the COVID-19 outbreak. The release potential of targeted OPEs from disposable surgical masks in the LZB area was ∼0.24 kg yr−1, which was insufficient to increase the OPE concentration in the LZB waters. The concentrations of most individual OPEs significantly decreased in LZB waters from 2019 to 2021, except for TBOEP and TNBP. Spatially, a lower concentration of OPEs was found in the Yellow River estuary area in 2021 compared with that before the COVID-19 pandemic due to the high content of suspended particulate matter in the YR. A higher total OPE concentration was observed along the northeastern coast of LZB, mainly owing to the construction of an artificial island since 2020. The ecological risks of the OPE mixture in LZB waters were lower than those before the COVID-19 outbreak. However, TCEP, TNBP, and BDP should receive continuous attention because of their potential ecological risks to aquatic organisms.

Distribution and pollution characteristics of organophosphate esters: reflected by tree rings of arbor species.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are emerging pollutants. Currently, research on OPEs in tree rings is still limited. In this study, tree rings of five arbor species from Sichuan Province, China, were sampled to study the occurrence and distribution of six OPEs, which were quantitatively analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The total concentrations of OPEs in all samples ranged from 189.79 (Fir species) to 341.23ng/g (Toona sinensis), with average concentration of 284.77 ± 46.66ng/g. So, arbor could be used as good passive samplers for OPEs. The levels of OPEs among five arbor species showed no significant difference (p = 0.668 > 0.05), suggesting that the pollution status of OPEs in a region or country could be roughly assessed by any arbor tree species. In this study area, tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBEP) was the dominant OPEs followed by tri(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP). Tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP) and tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP) showed relatively stable concentrations in each arbor species, while the other four OPEs including TBEP, triphenyl phosphate (TPhP), tri(chloropropyl) phosphate (TCPP) and TCEP had significantly different concentrations. Interestingly, the absorption and accumulation of OPEs by tree rings of arbor species were quite different from that of inorganic elements reported by other studies.

The first detection of organophosphate esters (OPEs) of a high altitude fresh snowfall in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau

Due to the gradual phase-out of brominated flame retardants, the consumption of organophosphate esters (OPEs) as suitable alternatives has increased in recent years. These compounds could be trapped and accumulate in the widely developed glaciers such as Laohugou Glacier No. 12 in the Tibetan Plateau (TP), as snow is an effective scavenger of organic pollutants in the atmosphere. However, large gaps in knowledge still exist regarding the occurrence, distribution, and source analysis of OPEs in TP glaciers. In this study, eight surface snow samples collected at different altitudes on Laohugou Glacier No. 12 on the northeastern edge of the TP in order to investigate sources and distribution of OPEs. The results showed that the concentrations of ∑7OPEs varied from 54.53 ng/L to 169.15 ng/L, with a mean of 99.84 ng/L. ∑Chlorinated-OPEs (Cl-OPEs) were dominant in these samples, accounting for 83% of the total OPE concentrations. ∑OPEs concentration increases with altitude on Laohugou Glacier No. 12, implying an altitudinal magnification effect on OPEs deposition. Principal component analysis suggests that OPEs primarily originated from traffic emissions and their variations were largely driven by dust transport. Analyses of backward trajectories of air masses and the wind field indicate that these OPEs might have come from urban emissions northwest of Laohugou Glacier No. 12. This study provides the first valuable insight into the environmental behavior of OPEs in Tibetan glaciers.

Organophosphate Esters in Foodstuffs from Multiple Provinces in China: Possible Sources during Food Processing and Implications for Human Exposure

With increasing application of organophosphate esters (OPEs) as flame retardants and plasticizers in the world, the health and ecological risks posed by these chemicals have raised people's concern over the years. Despite the fact that dietary intake is an important pathway for human exposure to OPEs, monitoring on OPEs in foodstuffs is scarce. In this study, we measured 14 OPEs in both packaged (n = 229) and fresh (n = 58) foodstuffs collected across China with a new method that was developed by two-stage solid-phase extraction. The total concentrations of OPEs (ΣOPEs) in 12 categories of packaged foodstuffs and 5 categories of fresh foodstuffs were in the range of 0.212-273 ng/g wet weight (ww) [geometric mean (GM): 5.06 ng/g ww] and 0.189-2.82 ng/g ww (GM: 0.618 ng/g ww), respectively. Significantly higher levels of ΣOPEs were found in packaged food categories of fruits and meat than those in the corresponding fresh ones, implying the extra introduction of OPEs during the processing and storage of foodstuffs. Correlation analysis showed that the GM concentrations of individual OPEs in animal-derived foods with few industrial processing were positively correlated with their annual production volumes in China in 2020, emphasizing the significance of natural sources of OPEs in these food samples. Elevated levels of ΣOPEs (range: 8.94-4120 and GM: 274 ng/g) were found in food-packaging materials, and the predominant OPE analogues were consistent with those found in packaged food samples. The result implies that the food-packaging material can be an important contamination source of OPEs in packaged foodstuffs, which is in particular true for triphenyl phosphate, tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate, tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate, and 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate. The median daily intake of ΣOPEs via food was estimated as 65.4 ng/kg bw/day for adults in China, and the category of cereals was the major contributor (72.7%) of the dietary exposure to OPEs. The exposure risk of OPEs via food intake was generally low for the Chinese population. Overall, this study establishes a baseline concentration for OPEs in Chinese foodstuffs and uncovers food contact material as a potential source of OPEs in foods. It is expected that the research in terms of food safety and OPE contamination will benefit from this work.

Occurrence of legacy and replacement plasticizers, bisphenols, and flame retardants in potable water in Montreal and South Africa

The occurrence of thirty-nine contaminants including plasticizers, bisphenols, and flame retardants in potable water from Montreal and South Africa was analyzed to determine their presence and concentrations in different water sources. In Montreal, five bottled water (BW) brands and three drinking water treatment plants (DWTP) were included. In South Africa, water was sampled from one urban DWTP located in Pretoria, Gauteng, and one rural DWTP located in Vhembe, along with water from the same rural DWTP which had been stored in small and large plastic containers. A combination of legacy compounds, typically with proven toxic effects, and replacement compounds was investigated. Bisphenols, Dechlorane-602, Dechlorane-603, and s-dechlorane plus (s-DP) were not detected in any water samples, and a-dechlorane plus (a-DP) was only detected in one sample from Pretoria at a concentration of 1.09 ng/L. Lower brominated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE)s were detected more frequently than higher brominated PBDEs, always at low concentrations of <2 ng/L, and total PBDE levels were statistically higher in South Africa than in Montreal. Replacement flame retardants, organophosphate esters (OPEs), were detected at statistically higher concentrations in Montreal's BW (68.56 ng/L), drinking water (DW) (421.45 ng/L) and Vhembe (198.33 ng/L) than legacy PBDEs. Total OPE concentrations did not demonstrate any geographical trend; however, levels were statistically higher in Montreal's DW than Montreal's BW. Plasticizers were frequently detected in all samples, with legacy compounds DEHP, DBP, and replacement DINCH being detected in 100 % of samples with average concentrations ranging from 6.89 ng/L for DEHP in Pretoria to 175.04 ng/L for DINCH in Montreal's DW. Total plasticizer concentrations were higher in Montreal than in South Africa. The replacement plasticizers (DINCH, DINP, DIDA, and DEHA) were detected at similar frequencies and concentrations as legacy plasticizers (DEHP, DEP, DBP, MEHP). For the compounds reported in earlier studies, the concentrations detected in the present study were similar to other locations. These compounds are not currently regulated in drinking water but their frequent detection, especially OPEs and plasticizers, and the presence of replacement compounds at similar or higher levels than their legacy compounds demonstrate the importance of further investigating the prevalence and the ecological or human health effects of these compounds.

Distribution, partitioning, and health risk assessment of organophosphate esters in a major tributary of middle Yangtze River using Monte Carlo simulation

Globally, organophosphate esters (OPEs) have attracted substantial attention because of their ubiquity in the environment, toxicity, and potential ecological and health risks. This study comprehensively investigated the occurrence, partitioning, and spatial distribution of nine ordinary monomeric OPEs (m-OPEs) and three emerging oligomeric OPEs (o-OPEs) in a major tributary of the middle Yangtze River, which is the Zijiang River (ZR), and their associated potential health risks. Total OPE concentrations ranged from 18.8 to 439 ng L−1, 1.40 to 19.1 ng L−1, and 3.71 to 77.3 ng g−1 dw in the surface water, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and sediment, respectively. Tris (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) dominated the water (61.3%) and sediment (60.1%) samples, whereas tris (2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP) was present in the SPM (59.0%) samples. The proportion of o-OPEs was low in all three media, ranging from 0.60% to 1.90%. Field-based log Koc values of the frequently detected OPEs were higher than those predicted by EPI Suite and were negatively correlated with temperature. The spatial distribution of OPEs in the water and hierarchical cluster analysis suggested that sewage treatment plant effluents and the mining industry were the main sources of OPEs in the ZR. The total noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of OPEs in the water were low at the detected concentrations, even in the high-exposure scenario.

Spatial distribution, receptor modelling and risk assessment of organophosphate esters in surface water from the largest freshwater lake in China

The occurrence and risk of organophosphate esters (OPEs) has become a global concern in recent years. This study investigated the occurrence, spatial distribution, and potential sources of thirteen OPEs and their associated ecological and human health risks in water samples from the largest freshwater lake, Poyang Lake, together with its five major inflow rivers and the water channel to Yangtze River. The total OPEs concentrations ranged from 38.44 ng/L to 428.94 ng/L, and the largest tributary Ganjiang River was much more polluted than other rivers. Chlorinated OPEs, such as tris (1–chloro‑2–propyl) phosphate and tri (2-chloroethyl) phosphate occupied the dominant composition of OPEs in the research area. Principal component analysis with multiple linear regression, positive matrix factorization, and correlation analysis were used to apportion the potential sources of OPEs in surface water. The combined contribution of polyvinyl chloride, polyester resins, and polyurethane foam (68.64%), antifoam agent and hydraulic fluids (21.50%), and the release of decorative materials and electric equipment from indoor (9.86%) were identified as the OPEs sources in the study region. The risk quotients (RQs) showed the ecological risk was negligible, but 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate exposures posed medium ecological risk to aquatic organisms. The carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of the target OPEs were below the theoretical risk threshold values, however, toddlers were much more sensitive to the OPEs exposure in surface water than teenagers and adults. Oral ingestion was the principal exposure pathway, and the health risk via oral ingestion was 1–2 orders of magnitude higher than dermal contact exposure route.

Organophosphate esters and synthetic musks in the sediments of the Yangtze River Estuary and adjacent East China Sea: Occurrence, distribution, and potential ecological risks

Occurrence, distribution, and potential ecological risks of ten organophosphate esters (OPEs) and nine synthetic musks (SMs) were investigated in sediments from the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE) and adjacent East China Sea (ECS). The total concentrations of OPEs in the surface sediments ranged from 0.977 to 19.0 ng/g dry weight (dw) with tris(2-chloro-propyl) phosphate being the dominant component. Total concentrations of SMs ranged from 0.176 to 7.25 ng/g dw, with 1,3,4,6,7,8-hexahydro-4,6,6,7,8,8-hexamethylcyclopenta(g)-2-benzopyran and 7-acetyl-1,1,3,4,4,6-hexamethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene as the dominant SMs. Higher sedimentary concentrations of ΣOPEs and ΣSMs were found in the river mouths of the YRE, inter face of Hangzhou Bay, and mud area of the ECS; the results suggested that terrestrial discharge might be the main source of OPEs and SMs in the studied region. Risk assessment revealed that low ecological risks were posed by OPEs, and limited to low ecological risks were posed by SMs.

Elevated concentration and high Diversity of organophosphate esters (OPEs) were Discovered in Sediment from Industrial, and E-Waste Recycling Areas

Aquatic environments in industrial, and e-waste recycling areas might undergo severe contamination; however, there are few studies comprehensively assessing the pollution status of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in these two areas. Here, we applied both atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) and electron spray ionization (ESI) sources in our target, suspect, and functional group-dependent screening strategy, which enhanced the confidence for confirmation on precursor ions of OPEs. Then, n=53 sediment samples (30 from the industrial area, and 23 from the e-waste recycling area) were analyzed. Twenty-three out of 30 target OPEs were quantifiable in these analyzed samples. Total OPE concentrations (Σ30OPEs) in samples from e-waste recycling area range from 12.8 to 9250 ng/g dry weight (dw), that are statistically significantly greater (t-test, p < 0.001) than those from industrial area (25.1-5520 ng/g dw). Σ30OPEs in the sediments from industrial, or e-waste recycling area are statistically significantly greater (one-way ANOVA, p < 0.001) as compared to those (32.0-369 ng/g dw) from Taihu Lake in our previous study. In sediment from three areas, suspect and non-target analysis fully or tentatively identified other 20 OPEs. Four of them have not been recorded or registered in any of online chemical databases, and they are tentatively named as ((methoxy(phenoxy)phosphoryl)oxy)phenyl diphenyl phosphate (mPPODP), (tert-butyl)phenyl (ethyne-oxidane) bis(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphate (TPBDTP), bis(dichlorophenyl) propane-1,3-diyl bis(hexylated phosphate) (BDCBHP), and bis(2-hexadecoxyethyl) ethyl phosphate (BHEPP). Overall, this study provided new insights regarding both analytical methodology and pollution status of OPEs, and highlights that elevated concentrations and high diversity of OPEs exist in sediments from industrial, and e-waste recycling areas.

Distribution of organophosphate esters influenced by human activities and fluvial-tidal interactions in the Dong Nai River System, Vietnam

Limited information is known about organophosphate esters (OPEs) in sediments of the Dong Nai River System (DNRS) in Vietnam and the influences of complex hydro-sedimentary dynamics on their fate. In this study, 48 surface sediment samples were collected from the Dong Nai-Soai Rap River and its tributary Vam Co River for the determination of 11 target OPEs, together with grain size and total organic carbon (TOC). The total concentrations of OPEs were in the range of 39.4 ng/g dw–373 ng/g dw (mean: 128 ng/g dw), and tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP) was the predominant one with an average contribution of 81%, followed by tri-n-butyl phosphate (TNBP), tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP). The composition profiles of OPEs at different locations of the DNRS showed no significant differences (p > 0.05). In addition, the distribution of OPEs had been influenced by both human activities and the fluvial-tidal interactions. The highly frequent and various human activities in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) leaded to the highest total concentration of OPEs in the midstream site. Based on our dataset, TOC content and grain size of sediments had significant correlation with certain OPEs (p < 0.05), and sediments with higher TOC content and finer grain size in the DNRS were more likely to be deposited in the downstream reach, contributing to the estuary of the DNRS was identified as another hotspot with the second highest concentration of OPEs. Furthermore, the distribution of OPEs in the transects had distinct characteristics, which reflected the joint influence of the human activities and fluvial-tidal interaction as well. However, the mechanism of their influence needed further investigation.

Partial dust removal in vehicles does not mitigate human exposure to organophosphate esters

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) have been detected within car interior dust, suggesting that the indoor microenvironment of vehicles may represent a potential route of human exposure to OPEs. We recently showed that people with longer commutes are exposed to higher concentrations of tris(1,3-dichloro-2-isopropyl)phosphate (TDCIPP) – a widely used OPE – and other studies have suggested that dust removal may lead to lower exposure to chemicals. Therefore, the overall objective of this study was to determine if a decrease in interior car dust results in mitigation of personal OPE exposure. Participants (N = 49) were asked to wear silicone wristbands, and a subset of them wiped interior parts at the front of their vehicles prior to one study week (N = 25) or both study weeks (N = 11). There were no significant differences in total OPE concentrations (77.79–13,660 ng/g) nor individual OPE concentrations (0.04–4852.81 ng/g) across the different wiping groups nor in relation to participant residence ZIP codes and AC/Heater usage. These findings suggest that higher exposure to TDCIPP for participants with longer commutes may be independent of dust located on interior parts at the front of the vehicle. Therefore, our study demonstrates that there is a need for research on the potential contribution of other sources of TDCIPP exposure within car interiors.

Atmospheric deposition, seasonal variation, and long-range transport of organophosphate esters on Yongxing Island, South China Sea

The South China Sea (SCS), surrounded by developing countries/regions with a huge consumption of flame retardants, is generally contaminated by organophosphate esters (OPEs). However, studies on the occurrence, deposition and long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT) process over the SCS of OPEs compounds are still limited. In this work, 10 OPEs were measured in 100 atmospheric samples collected from Yongxing Island (YXI) in the SCS. The total OPEs concentrations ranged from 1508 to 1968 pg/m3 with 28.6–1416.9 pg/m3 in gas and 95.2–1066.2 pg/m3 in particle partition. The three chlorinated OPEs are present at higher concentrations than the other seven non-chlorinated OPEs. Most OPEs had clear seasonal variations that followed the order: spring>summer≈winter>autumn except for tri-isobutyl phosphate (TIBP) and tris-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP). The particle-bound fraction of the total OPEs had little seasonal variations with a mean value of 0.35. Comparing J-P model and Koa model, it was found that the gas/particle partition in the study area was in non-equilibrium condition. LRAT, controlled by seasonal wind direction, was the predominated factor that led to the seasonal variations of OPEs on YXI. The average daily deposition flux of total OPEs was 13.0 ng/m2 with an annual total deposition of 15.06 g.

Organophosphate esters in surface soils from a heavily urbanized region of Eastern China: Occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk assessment

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) pose increasing concerns for their widespread distribution in soil environments and potential threat to human health. In this study, we investigated the occurrence and associated risks of seven OPEs in surface soils and the potential influence of human activities on soil OPE contamination in a heavily urbanized region of the Yangtze River Delta in Eastern China. All target OPEs were detected in the soil samples (100% of samples) reflecting their widespread distribution in the study region. The total OPE concentration (the sum of the seven OPEs) ranged from 162.7 to 986.0 ng/g on a dry weight basis, with a mean value of 469.3 ± 178.6 ng/g. Tris (2-butoxyethyl) phosphate was the main compound, accounting for 67–78% of the total OPE concentration. Ecological risk assessment showed that tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate, tris(2,3-dichloropropyl) phosphate, tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate, and tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate posed a medium potential risk to terrestrial biota (0.1 < risk quotient <1). The human exposure estimation showed insignificant risks to local population. Redundancy analysis revealed that the individual and total OPE contaminations were positively correlated with human activity parameters. The total OPE concentrations were positively correlated to population density (R2 = 0.38, P < 0.001), and urban land use percentage (R2 = 0.39, P < 0.001), while negatively correlated to forest land use percentage (R2 = 0.59, P < 0.001), suggesting a significant contribution of human disturbance to OPE pollution. These results can facilitate OPE contamination control and promote sustainable soil management in urbanized and industrialized regions.

Determination of organophosphate ester flame retardants in indoor dust and their potential health exposure risk

AbstractThis study was conducted to determine organophosphate ester compounds in indoor dust in Hanoi ‐ a populated city in Vietnam. In the study, the concentration and distribution of fifteen organophosphate esters (OPEs) were analyzed in indoor dust specimen. In general, the recorded total concentrations of OPEs in dust ranged from 2.7 to 14.1 μg/g and the average quantities varied from 0.2 to 1.0 μg/g. Particular, 100 % of survey samples were detected signals of OPEs, indeed, tris‐(2‐chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) and tris(2‐butoxyethyl)phosphate (TBEP) were two of the OPE substances, which their content accounted for the most in 15 analyzed compounds. OPE emission sources in indoor dust could be from locally used wide variety of consumer products and building materials in Hanoi houses. Moreover, tri‐m‐cresyl phosphate (TMCP) was practically observed in survey dust samples, and thus effects of traffic activities on OPEs contamination were not significant. Estimating human exposure to OPEs through directly absorbing foods was implemented and illustrated that this absorption route did not substantially affected adult and children health.

Seasonal occurrence and removal of organophosphate esters in conventional and advanced drinking water treatment plants

In this study, the fate of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in conventional and advanced drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) was investigated in field scale. In addition, the risk of OPEs by drinking water was assessed. The average total OPE concentrations in raw and treated water were lower in the rainy season (94.3 and 57.1 ng/L, respectively) than dry season (163 and 84.2 ng/L, respectively). Advanced DWTPs showed better removal efficiencies of major OPEs rather than those in conventional DWTPs. The average removal rates for two chlorinated OPEs, including tris(2-chloroethyl)phosphate (TCEP) and tris(1-chloro-2-propyl)phosphate (TCIPP), were negative (TCEP: −87%, TCIPP: −41%) for a conventional DWTP but positive (TCEP: 46%, TCIPP: 49%) for advanced DWTPs using granular activated carbon filtration. The average removal rates for advanced DWTPs were statistically higher for the alkyl/aryl OPEs, tri-n-butyl phosphate (TNBP: 67%) and tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP: 63%), than those for the conventional DWTPs (TNBP: 21%, TBOEP: 25%). The hazardous quotient (HQ) of major OPEs were lower for advanced DWTPs and water irrigated from upstream sties/reservoir compared to that of conventional DWTPs and water irrigated from downstream sites. We believe that this is the first comparison of OPE removal efficiencies achieved in conventional and advanced DWTPs.

GAPS-megacities: A new global platform for investigating persistent organic pollutants and chemicals of emerging concern in urban air

A pilot study was initiated in 2018 under the Global Atmospheric Passive Sampling (GAPS) Network named GAPS-Megacities. This study included 20 megacities/major cities across the globe with the goal of better understanding and comparing ambient air levels of persistent organic pollutants and other chemicals of emerging concern, to which humans residing in large cities are exposed. The first results from the initial period of sampling are reported for 19 cities for several classes of flame retardants (FRs) including organophosphate esters (OPEs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) including new flame retardants (NFRs), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD). The two cities, New York (USA) and London (UK) stood out with ∼3.5 to 30 times higher total FR concentrations as compared to other major cities, with total concentrations of OPEs of 15,100 and 14,100 pg/m3, respectively. Atmospheric concentrations of OPEs significantly dominated the FR profile at all sites, with total concentrations in air that were 2–5 orders of magnitude higher compared to other targeted chemical classes. A moderately strong and significant correlation (r = 0.625, p < 0.001) was observed for Gross Domestic Product index of the cities with total OPEs levels. Although large differences in FR levels were observed between some cities, when averaged across the five United Nations regions, the FR classes were more evenly distributed and varied by less than a factor of five. Results for Toronto, which is a ‘reference city’ for this study, agreed well with a more in-depth investigation of the level of FRs over different seasons and across eight sites representing different urban source sectors (e.g. traffic, industrial, residential and background). Future sampling periods under this project will investigate trace metals and other contaminant classes, linkages to toxicology, non-targeted analysis, and eventually temporal trends. The study provides a unique urban platform for evaluating global exposome.
