Systematic underestimation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon aqueous concentrations in rivers

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a widespread group of organic contaminants whose presence in water bodies is cause of severe concern. With few exceptions, the majority of PAHs is hydrophobic, presents a high adsorption affinity, and is thus primarily transported within river systems during high-flow events together with suspended particulate matter (SPM). Evidence exists of analytical challenges related to the incomplete extraction of PAHs adsorbed to solids and thus to a potential negative bias in the chemical analysis of PAHs in bulk water samples with high SPM content. Despite this, partly due to the elevated efforts required to collect representative samples containing sufficient SPM for the separate PAH analysis in this matrix, several investigations rely on the analysis of aqueous samples. This study tests the hypothesis that surveys based exclusively on bulk water may lead to a systematic underestimation of the real contamination level and transport of PAHs in rivers. Six high-turbidity events were examined in three Austrian rivers applying time-integrated sampling and simultaneously analyzing PAHs in total bulk water, filtered water, SPM, and supernatant. Despite an unavoidable degree of uncertainty in such challenging sampling scheme, the results indicate that measurements performed with best available standard methods in bulk water samples determined in average only about 40% of the theoretically expected total PAHs concentrations derived from the analyses in SPM. Such deviation has important implications for the reliable assessment of the compliance with environmental quality standards as well as for surveys aimed to estimate riverine loads, validate emission models, and understand the transport dynamics of PAHs in rivers. Whereas the first objective, e.g., in European countries, is alternatively achieved via monitoring in biota, the latter ones require efforts directed to complement monitoring campaigns with separate sampling of SPM, with monitoring of suspended solids transport to appropriately select and interpret the results of water samples and to improve the chemical analysis of PAHs in bulk water samples with high solids content.

Source identification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils around crude oil contaminated area in Ohaji/Egbema, Imo State

ABSTRACT This study aims to determine the source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the soils surrounding an area in Ohaji/Egbema, Imo State, that has been contaminated by crude oil. Soil samples were collected in the study area using a soil auger at a depth of 0–20 cm at three sampling locations (sample A, sample B, and sample C) in the Mmahu community in Ohaji/Egbema. In each of the sampling locations, twenty sub-samples were collected from twenty sampling points and pooled together to form representative samples for each of the sampling locations. Prior to GC-MS analysis, the composite samples were air-dried, sieved through a 2-mm mesh, and then kept in pet bottles that had been previously cleaned. The GC-MS investigations were carried out using a Shimadzu Model 2010 GC-MS (Shimadzu, Japan) fitted with an HP-5 MS fused silica column. This was used to quantify the 16 USEPA priority PAHs in the studied soils. The sum of the 16 USEPA priority PAHs in the sample locations ranged from 0.0192 mg/kg in the control sample to 10.73 mg/kg in sample A. Compared to high molecular weight PAHs (4–6 rings), the total concentration of low molecular weight PAHs (2–3 rings) was found to be substantially greater. According to the PAH molecular diagnostic ratio, all sampling points had low to high molecular mass ratios >1, which suggests that the origin of the PAH contamination was petrogenic. The petrogenic source of contamination was attributed to oil spillage around the study area. The knowledge of source identification of PAHs in soils helps in the determination of the most appropriate remediation strategy in order to prevent further contamination and minimise the risks to human health and the environment.

Evaluation of Alternative Sources of Proteins and Other Nutrients with Potential Applications in Fish Nutrition

The European Union’s (EU) agricultural self-sufficiency is challenged by its reliance on imported plant proteins, particularly soy from the Americas, contributing to deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions. Addressing the EU’s protein deficit, this study evaluates alternative protein sources for aquaculture, focusing on their nutritional value, elemental content, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Protein flours from gastropods (Helix pomatia, Arion lusitanicus, Arion vulgaris) and their hepatopancreas, along with plant-based proteins from food industry by-products (oilcakes, coffee grounds, spent brewer’s yeast), were analyzed. Results revealed that snail flour contained the highest protein content at 59.09%, significantly outperforming hepatopancreas flour at 42.26%. Plant-based proteins demonstrated substantial nutritional value, with coffee grounds flour exhibiting a remarkable protein content of 71.8% and spent brewer’s yeast flour at 57.9%. Elemental analysis indicated high levels of essential minerals such as magnesium in hepatopancreas flour (5719.10 mg/kg) and calcium in slug flour (48,640.11 mg/kg). However, cadmium levels in hepatopancreas flour (11.45 mg/kg) necessitate caution due to potential health risks. PAH concentrations were low across all samples, with the highest total PAH content observed in hepatopancreas flour at 0.0353 µg/kg, suggesting minimal risk of PAH-related toxicity. The analysis of plant-based protein sources, particularly oilcakes derived from sunflower, hemp, flax, and pumpkin seeds, revealed that these by-products not only exhibit high protein contents but present a promising avenue for enhancing the nutritional quality of feed. This study underscores the potential of utilizing gastropod and plant-based by-products as sustainable and nutritionally adequate alternatives to conventional feeds in aquaculture, contributing to the EU’s environmental sustainability goals.

Bioaccumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their human health risks depend on the characteristics of microplastics in marine organisms of Sanggou Bay, China

Microplastics pose a threat to marine environments through their physical presence and as vectors of chemical pollutants. However, the impact of microplastics on the accumulation and human health risk of chemical pollutants in marine organisms remains largely unknown. In this study, we investigated the microplastics and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution in marine organisms from Sanggou Bay and analyzed their correlations. Results showed that microplastic and PAHs concentration ranged from 1.23 ± 0.23 to 5.77 ± 1.10 items/g, from 6.98 ± 0.45 to 15.07 ± 1.25 μg/kg, respectively. The microplastic abundance, particularly of fibers, transparent and color plastic debris, correlates strongly with PAH contents, indicating that microplastics increase the bioaccumulation of PAHs and microplastics with these characteristics have a significant vector effect on PAHs. Although consuming seafood from Sanggou Bay induce no carcinogenic risk from PAHs, the presence of microplastics in organisms can significantly increases incremental lifetime cancer risk of PAHs. Thus, microplastics can serve as transport vectors for PAHs with implications for the potential health risks to human through consumption. This study provides new insight into the risks of microplastics in marine environments.

Effects of Chinese “double carbon strategy” on soil polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons pollution

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and carbon dioxide primarily originate from the combustion of fossil fuels and biomass. The implementation of the Chinese “double carbon strategy” is expected to impact the distribution of PAH emissions, consequently influencing the spatial distribution trend of PAHs in surface soil. Therefore, it is crucial to quantitatively evaluate the effectiveness of the Chinese “double carbon strategy” on soil PAH pollution for the purpose of “the reduction of pollution and carbon emissions”. This study utilized 15,088 individual PAH concentration data from 943 soil samples collected between 2003 and 2020 in China, in conjunction with PAH emissions at a 10 km resolution, for meta-analysis. The calculated PAH emissions in this study are in line with the global PAH emission inventory (PKU-PAH-2007), with a relative standard deviation at the provincial level of less than 25 %. Subsequently, a novel method was developed using emission density and Kow of PAHs to predict PAH concentrations in surface soil based on a least-squares regression model. Compared to other environmental models, the method established in this study significantly reduced the percent sample deviation to less than 70 %. Furthermore, energy consumption data for China were simulated based on the implementation plan of the “double carbon strategy” to project PAH emissions and soil PAH levels for the years 2030 and 2060. The predicted PAH emissions in China were estimated to decrease to 41,300 t in 2030 and 10,406.5 t in 2060 from 78,815 t in 2020. Moreover, the heavily contaminated areas of soil PAHs (i.e., total PAH concentrations in soil exceeding 1000 μg kg−1) were projected to decrease by 45 % and 82 % in 2030 and 2060, respectively, compared to levels in 2020. These findings suggest that the implementation of the “double carbon strategy” can fundamentally reduce the pollution of PAHs in surface soil of China.

Variations of source-specific risks for inhalable particles-bound PAHs during long-term air pollution controls in a Chinese megacity: Impact of gas/particle partitioning

Gas/particle (G/P) partitioning is a determining factor that drives the behavior of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the atmosphere. To comprehend the variations and impacts of PAHs G/P partitioning on inhalation risks from different sources, atmospheric PAHs in Chengdu were studied from January 2009 to January 2021. Chengdu's air quality demonstrated improvement, with a noticeable decline in PM10 (from 238 to 103 μg m−3), PM10-bound PAHs mass concentrations (from 0.08 to 0.01 μg m−3), as well as PAHs inhalation non-cancer (from 63.5 to 7.1) and cancer risks (from 6.2 × 10−5 to 7.7 × 10−6). Decreasing trends were also observed in the concentrations of organic carbon (OC) and the values of absorptive G/P partitioning coefficient (Kp, OM) from 2009 to 2020, indicating a slight decrease in the PM absorptive capacity. A positive matrix factorization (PMF) model utilized three distinct datasets: PMFpp (particle-phase PAHs only), PMFtot (total PAHs concentrations), and PMFpp/gas (particle-phase in parallel with gas-phase PAHs). PMFpp and PMFpp/gas provide reasonable source apportionment and source-specific risk results. However, daily variations in source contributions of PMFtot were found to be unreasonable. PMFpp/gas and PMFtot could identify a source of low molecular weight PAHs (LPAHs) related to temperature, and a significantly positive correlation between LPAHs and temperature was discovered. Gas/particle partitioning of PAHs showed a notable impact on source-specific risks associated with coal and biomass combustion (CC&BC). The findings contribute to our understanding of the variation in PAHs G/P partitioning and the PM absorptive capacity resulting from effective air pollution control in China. Additionally, they offer prerequisite information for incorporating semi-volatile organic compounds in source apportionment and source-specific risk assessment.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in seawater after the mysterious oil spill of 2019 on the Pernambuco coast, northeast Brazil

In 2019, one of Brazil's most significant environmental disasters occurred, involving an oil spill that directly affected Pernambuco state. Contamination along the coast was evaluated by the quantification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in fifty seawater samples collected in the summer and winter of 2021. Analysis using fluorescence spectroscopy revealed that for all the samples, levels of dissolved/dispersed petroleum hydrocarbons (DDPHs) were higher than the regional baseline for tropical western shores of the Atlantic Ocean. GC–MS analyses quantified 17 PAHs in the samples, with highest total PAHs concentrations of 234 ng L−1 in summer and 33.3 ng L−1 in winter, which were consistent with the highest risks observed in ecotoxicity assays. The use of diagnostic ratios showed that the coast was impacted by a mixture of PAHs from petrogenic and pyrolytic sources. The results indicated the need for continuous monitoring of the regions affected by the 2019 spill.

Spatial distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in water and sediment in the Ganga River: source diagnostics and health risk assessment on dietary exposure through a common carp fish Labeo rohita.

We evaluated spatial distribution and source apportionment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water and sediments at four selected sites of the Ganga River. Also, we measured PAHs in muscle tissues of Rohu (Labeo rohita), the most common edible carp fish of the Ganga River and potential human health risk was addressed. Total concentration of PAHs (∑PAHs) in water was highest at Manika Site (1470.5ng/L) followed by Knuj (630.0ng/L) and lowest at Adpr (219.0ng/L). A similar trend was observed for sediments with highest concentration of ∑PAHs at Manika (461.8ng/g) and lowest at Adpr Site (94.59ng/g). Among PAHs, phenanthrene (Phe) showed highest concentration in both water and sediment. Of the eight major carcinogenic contributors (∑PAH8C), Indeno (1,2,3-C,D) pyrene (InP) did appear the most dominant component accounting for 42% to this group at Manika Site. Isomer ratios indicated vehicular emission and biomass combustion as major sources of PAHs. The ∑PAHs concentrations in fish tissue ranged from 117.8 to 758.0ng/g (fresh weight basis) where low molecular weight PAHs assumed predominance (above 80%). The risk level in fish tissues appeared highest at Manika Site and site-wise differences were statistically significant (p < 0.05). The ILCR (> 10-4) indicated carcinogenic risk in adults and children associated with BaP and DBahA at Manika Site and with BaP at Knuj Site. Overall, the concentrations exceeding permissible limit, carcinogenic potential and BaP equivalent all indicated carcinogenic risks associated with some individual PAHs. This merits attention because the Ganga River is a reservoir of fisheries.

Distribution of 35 Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Pine Needle Samples from Selected Locations in the Republic of Korea.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), dust, and wax were measured in pine needles, and PAHs were also measured in surface soil. Pearson correlation analysis was performed between the analytical values. The main compounds responsible for the increase in total PAHs were non-carcinogenic phenanthrene and fluoranthene. Therefore, the % content of carcinogenic PAHs decreased with a slope = -0.037 (r = 0.47, p < 0.01), as the total PAH concentration in pine needles increased. Correlations between individual PAHs in pine needles and surface soil were very high when only low-number ring PAHs (2R- and 3R-PAHs) were statistically analyzed and significant when only high-number ring PAHs were statistically analyzed. Low-number ring PAH mainly moves in the gas phase and diffuses into the wax layer, so it was found to be statistically significant with the wax content of pine needles. High-number ring PAHs showed a high correlation with the amount of dust in pine needles because they mainly attached to dust particles and accumulated on the surface of pine needles. The ratios of fluoranthene/pyrene and methylphenanthrene/phenanthrene for predicting the origin of atmospheric PAHs have also been proven valid for pine needles.

Occurrence and characteristics of PAHs in coastal seawater off the city of Samsun on the Black Sea coast of Turkey

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) concentrations in seawater were monitored seasonally along the Samsun coast, Turkey, between August 2019 and May 2020 to elucidate main origin, seasonal variations, and risk pathways of PAHs. Total PAH concentrations in surface seawater ranged from 24.86 to 477.78 ng L−1 (mean 138.90, SD 62.22 ng L−1), with relatively higher levels in summer and autumn seasons. Combustion products were the major sources of PAHs. The increased PAH levels during the summer period may have resulted from the more intense industrial and agricultural activities. The highest proportion of PAHs were 3- and 2-ringed, accounting for 39.23 % and 26.50 % of ΣPAHs, respectively, and their derivatives Nap and Phe predominated in individual PAHs. While RQ values of ∑PAHs showed low ecological risk, RQMPCs of BpF and BaA in autumn and BpF in summer were at high ecological risk.

Large-scale soil application of hydrochar: Reducing its polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon content and toxicity by heating

The beneficial roles of hydrochar in carbon sequestration and soil improvement are widely accepted. Despite few available reports regarding polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) generated during preparation, their potential negative impacts on ecosystems remain a concern. A heating treatment method was employed in this study for rapidly removing PAHs and reducing the toxicity of corn stover-based hydrochar (CHC). The result showed total PAHs content (∑PAH) decreased and then sharply increased within the temperature range from 150 °C to 400 °C. The ∑PAH and related toxicity in CHC decreased by more than 80% under 200 °C heating temperature, compared with those in the untreated sample, representing the lowest microbial toxicity. Benzo(a)pyrene produced a significant influence on the ecological toxicity of the hydrochar among the 16 types of PAHs. The impact of thermal treatment on the composition, content, and toxicity of PAHs was significantly influenced by the adsorption, migration, and desorption of PAHs within hydrochar pores, as well as the disintegration and aggregation of large molecular polymers. The combination of hydrochar with carbonized waste heat and exhaust gas collection could be a promising method to efficiently and affordably reduce hydrochar ecological toxicity.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAHs) Levels in Treated Spent Engine Oil Contaminated Soil from Automechanic Workshop Site in Wukari, Nigeria

Spent engine oil contaminated soil samples were collected and divided into three portions along with uncontaminated soil sample collected 10 meters away from the contaminated site. Two of the contaminated soil samples were treated with 0.5M NaOH and heat at 2500C respectively. All the samples were extracted with appropriate solvents using sonication, cleaned up and then analyzed with gas chromatograph coupled to flame ionization detector. The results show that total PAHs concentration of contaminated soil sample was 333.6820 mg/kg, contaminated soil sample treated with 0.5M NaOH, 104.8540 mg/kg, contaminated soil sample treated with heat at 2500C was 180.0905 mg/kg and the uncontaminated soil sample, 0.7084 mg/kg. The results showed that Wukari mechanic village is contaminated with PAHs through indiscriminate disposal of spent engine oil. Furthermore, treatment with 0.5M NaOH was a more effective means of remediation relative to treatment with heat at 250oC for two hours. The study will be an appropriate guide for the artisans following enlightenment about the possible threat that contact with PAH contaminated soils could have on their health.

Chemical and Thermal Exposure Risks in a Multi Compartment Training Structure

AbstractProviding NFPA 1403 compliant live-fire training can present thermal and chemical exposure risk to instructors and students. To reduce risk, training academies, fire departments, instructors, and standards setting technical committees need more information on how different training fuels used in common training structures can impact the environment in which firefighter training occurs. This study utilized a traditional concrete training structure with multiple compartments to characterize training environments with three different fuel package materials [i.e., low density wood fiberboard, oriented strand board (OSB), and wood pallets]. Exposure risks for a fire instructor located on either the first or second floor were characterized using measurements of heat flux, air temperature and airborne concentrations of several contaminants including known, probable, or possible carcinogens. It was hypothesized that utilizing a training fuel package with solid wood pallets would result in lower concentrations of these airborne contaminants [aldehydes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs)] than wood-based sheet goods containing additional resins and/or waxes. Additionally, it was hypothesized that these concentrations would be lower than in the single compartment Fire Behavior Lab presented in a companion manuscript. For all measured compounds other than hydrochloric acid, airborne concentrations were 10 to 100 times lower than in the Fire Behavior Lab. OSB-fueled fires produced the highest median concentrations of total PAHs and VOCs such as benzene, while the pallet fuel package produced the lowest median concentrations of these compounds. These trends generally followed the qualitative visual obscuration created by each fuel. Additional tests were conducted on the OSB-fueled fires with increased ventilation and an alternate means of reducing visibility through smoldering smoke barrels. This OSB experiment with increased ventilation resulted in the highest temperatures in the fire room but the lowest impact on visibility throughout the structure, as well as the lowest overall concentrations of contaminants in this study. In contrast, the smoldering straw-filled smoke barrel created a highly obscured environment (with minimal impact on thermal environment) and some of the highest concentrations of the targeted contaminants of any test. These data may be useful in balancing obscuration for training with potential exposure to thermal stressors and contaminants.

Appraisal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in indoor dust of Eastern Nigeria and its implications in the COVID-19 years

The risk assessment of PAHs in settled indoor dusts from different localities of Awka, Ekwulobia, and Rumuodomaya–Ogale, Eastern Nigeria, were investigated. Settled dust samples (n = 144) were collected from the windows and floor using brush and analyzed for PAHs with GC- FID. Dust from the windows showed higher total PAHs concentrations than the floor in the order; Rumuodomaya–Ogale > Ekwulobia > Awka. The 3- and 4-ring PAHs were dominant in the window and floor dust of Awka in all the months, while the 3-ring PAHs were the dominant compound in Ekwulobia. The concentrations of total PAH in the window and floor dusts of Ekwulobia, showed a significant difference across the months (p < 0.05). In Rumuodomaya–Ogale, the 3, 4, and 5-ring PAHs supersede in the window and floor dust. This showed that dust is a major sink for 3–5-ring PAHs. The compounds; BaA, DahA, Ant, BaP, and DBA were the major contributors to benzo(a)pyrene as toxicity equivalence (BaPTEQ) values of the window and floor dust. The total incremental life cancer risk was < 1.0 × 10−04 in all the study area; hence, the increased indoor activities during COVID-19 lockdown had no significant cancer effect on human health of the populace.

Performance evaluation of four sampling techniques and source apportionment for the atmospheric deposition fluxes of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are primarily emitted into the atmosphere through anthropogenic activities and can be transported to receptor sites at varying distances. In this study, the atmospheric PAH deposition was investigated using a dry deposition plate (DDP) with Mylar, a dry deposition disk (DDD) with Velcro, a resin bulk deposition sampler (Resin-BDS), and a water bulk deposition sampler (Water-BDS) in Ulsan, South Korea, during May–October 2013. Additionally, ambient PAH concentrations were monitored using high-volume air samplers. The mean deposition fluxes of Σ13 PAHs were 8.62 ± 1.44, 36.9 ± 6.81, 56.9 ± 9.74, and 63.8 ± 8.04 μg/m2/d for the DDP, DDD, Resin-BDS, and Water-BDS, respectively. The DDD was more effective than the DDP because it could collect high molecular weight (HMW) PAHs from dry deposition, which are more toxic than low molecular weight PAHs. The Water-BDS had the highest fluxes of Σ13 PAHs; however, the Resin-BDS may be more suitable for collecting HMW PAHs from both dry and wet deposition due to relatively constant values for the deposition velocity of PAHs. Furthermore, the PAH fluxes in the Resin-BDS samples were significantly positively correlated with the gaseous and total (gaseous + particulate) concentrations of ambient PAHs. Hence, the fluxes obtained by the Resin-BDS were further used to apply principal component analysis, multiple linear regression, and backward air trajectory simultaneously to identify the emission sources of the deposited PAHs. The results indicate that the combustion of fossil fuels and biomass was the major source. In particular, the industrial complexes using petroleum and coal on the city's east coast and vehicular exhausts were the main local sources. Meanwhile, long-range sources may be forest fires, harbors, and industrial activities in nearby countries. Our study suggests that BDS, considering both dry and wet deposition, can be selectively used for research on PAH deposition.

Potential of Pinus eldarica Medw. tree bark for biomonitoring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in ambient air

Urban trees' biomonitoring of pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) yields pertinent and useful data for air pollution management. The aim of this study was to biomonitor PAHs in pine (Pinus eldarica Medw.) trees in the city of Isfahan and identify their sources. In total, 34 samples of outer bark of the trees were collected and their contents of 16 EPA PAHs were analyzed. With a median value of 136.3 ng/g, the total PAH contents in tree barks varied from 53.4 to 705.2 ng/g. The average values of the diagnostic ratios for Ant/(Ant + Phe), Flu/(Flu + Py), BaA/(BaA + Chr) and IP/(IP + BP) were 0.19, 0.49, 0.45 and 0.49, respectively, revealing the PAHs majority source of pyrogenic. Meanwhile, principal component analysis showed two major types of PAHs sources including pyrogenic (fossil fuel combustion and industrial activities) and petrogenic (uncombusted) sources. The average ratio An/(An + Phe) and Flu/(Flu + Py) in bark samples was close to their relevant ratios in ambient air which demonstrated the potential use of this approach for biomonitoring of PAHs.

Sources of hydrocarbons and their risk assessment in seawater and sediment samples collected from the Nile Delta coast of the Mediterranean Sea

The aim of this work is to examine the levels, distribution, bases, and hazards of n-alkanes (n-C9 to n-C20) and PAHs in the seawater and sediments around oil production locations in the whole delta region. The variations in the levels of PAHs and n-alkanes in seawater and sediment of the Nile delta coast of the Mediterranean were investigated using GC–MS/MS. The Σn-alkanes residues ranged between 12.05 and 93.51 mg/L (mean: 50.45 ± 17.49 mg/L) and 4.70 to 84.03 µg/g (mean: 31.02 ± 27.995 µg/g) in seawater and sediments, respectively. Total PAHs concentrations ranged between 4.485 and 16.337 μg/L (average: 9.47 ± 3.69 μg/L) and 1.32 to 28.38 ng/g (average 8.61 ± 7.57 ng/g) in seawater and sediment samples, respectively. The CPI (carbon preference index) values fluctuated between 0.62 and 1.72 (seawater) and from 0.234 to 2.175 (sediment), proposing the variation sources of n-alkane in the studied area. PAHs concentrations were lower than the Effective Range Low (ERL) and Effective Range Median (ERM) levels. The Toxic Equivalent Quotient (TEQ) values oscillated between 0.002 and 6.84 ng/L and from 3.72 to 13.48 ng/g for the seawater and sediment samples, respectively. The Ant/(Ant + Phe) ratio in sediment and seawater samples indicated a pyrolytic source while the BaA/(BaA + Chry) ratio indicates petrogenic sources in most of the studied stations.

Source Apportionment and Health Risk of Some Organic Contaminants in Water and Suspended Particulate Matter from Imo River, Nigeria

The objective of this study was to provide the source identification and assessment of potential health associated with some organic contaminant detected in water and suspended particle matter (SPM) from the Imo River, Nigeria using gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector (GC/FID) after 1:1 ratio solvent mixture (n-hexane and dichloromethane) extraction. The findings on SPM revealed the values; pH (5.42±0.097-5.567±0.057), conductivity (74.58±5.390-87.6±0.9 uS/cm), and total organic carbon (TOC) (3.626±0.366-6.143±0.176), and surface water; pH (6.077±0.049-6.46±0.52), conductivity (49.03±1.430- 58.12±0.553 uS/cm). The total concentrations of both low and high molecular PAHs in SPM recorded at stations1-3 were 4.384 mg/kg, 16.87 mg/kg, and (22.69 mg/kg); surface water 2.329 mg/L, 7.428 mg/L and 6.657 mg/L. The source apportionment of PAHs in SPM and surface water via molecular diagnostic ratios identified both petrogenic source (crude oil, petroleum spillages, and seepages) and pyrogenic sources (combustion of grass, wood, coal, and gas flaring). A further analysis with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed two principal components, with 65.568% for component 1 and 34.432% for component 2 for SPM, and 62.80% for principal components and 37.2% for principal component 2 for surface water. The correlation analysis of PAHs affirmed common sources such as petrogenic and pyrogenic origins. The toxic equivalent factor of total benzo(a)pyrene for 6 ∑PAHs in SPM was recorded as 3.693 mg/kg, 1.605 mg/kg, and 0.453 mg/kg; surface water was recorded as 0.823 mg/L, 1.858 mg/L, and 0.353 mg/L, while the mutagenic equivalency quantities of SPM were recorded as 3.693mg/kg, 1.146 mg/kg, and 0.316 mg/kg; surface water 0.739 mg/L, 0.938, and 0.577 for stations 1-3. The effect of carcinogenic PAHs in SPM was higher in adults than in children, with regards to ILCR analysis. Users of Imo Rivers should be guided on the exposure of SPM and surface water since the toxic, mutagenic, and cancer risk levels of the river are above the permissible limit in some stations.

Concentrations, Sources and Health Risk Assessment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Chinese Herbal Medicines.

The determination and evaluation of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in seven Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) were conducted through a rapid and straightforward extraction and purification method, coupled with GC-MS. A sample-based solid-phase extraction (SPE) pretreatment technique, incorporating isotopic internal standards, was employed for detecting various medicinal parts of CHMs. The assay exhibited linearity within the range of 5 to 500 ng/mL, with linear coefficients (R2) for PAHs exceeding 0.999. The recoveries of spiked standards ranged from 63.37% to 133.12%, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) ranging from 0.75% to 14.54%. The total PAH content varied from 176.906 to 1414.087 μg/kg. Among the 16 PAHs, phenanthrene (Phe) was consistently detected at the highest levels (47.045-168.640 μg/kg). Characteristic ratio analysis indicated that oil, coal, and biomass combustion were the primary sources of PAHs in CHMs. The health risk associated with CHMs was assessed using the lifetime carcinogenic risk approach, revealing potential health risks from the consumption of honeysuckle, while the health risks of consuming Lycium chinense berries were deemed negligible. For the other five CHMs (glycyrrhizae, Coix lacryma, ginseng, lotus seed, seed of Sterculia lychnophora), the health risk from consumption fell within acceptable ranges. Furthermore, sensitivity analyses utilizing Monte Carlo exposure assessment methods identified PAH levels in CHMs as health risk sensitizers. It is crucial to recognize that the consumption of herbal medicines is not a continuous process but entails potential health risks. Hence, the monitoring and risk assessment of PAH residues in CHMs demand careful attention.

Particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in rural households burning solid fuels in Xuanwei County, Southwest China: occurrence, size distribution, and health risks.

The study is about the size distribution and health risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in indoor environment of Xuanwei, Southwest China particle samples were collected by Anderson 8-stage impactor which was used to gather particle samples to nine size ranges. Size-segregated samples were collected in indoor from a rural village in Xuanwei during the non-heating and heating seasons. The results showed that the total concentrations of the indoor particulate matter (PM) were 757 ± 60 and 990 ± 78 μg/m3 in non-heating and heating seasons, respectively. The total concentration of indoor PAHs reached to 8.42 ± 0.53 μg/m3 in the heating season, which was considerably greater than the concentration in the non-heating season (2.85 ± 1.72 μg/m3). The size distribution of PAHs showed that PAHs were mainly enriched in PMs with the diameter <1.1 μm. The diagnostic ratios (DR) and principal component analysis (PCA) showed that coal and wood for residential heating and cooking were the main sources of indoor PAHs. The results of the health risk showed that the total deposition concentration (DC) in the alveolar region (AR) was 0.25 and 0.68 μg/m3 in the non-heating and heating seasons respectively. Throughout the entire sampling periods, the lifetime cancer risk (R) based on DC of children and adults varied between 3.53 ×10-5 to 1.79 ×10-4. During the heating season, the potential cancer risk of PAHs in adults was significant, exceeding 10-4, with a rate of 96%.
