Impact of severe drought on biogenic volatile organic compounds emissions from Sphagnum mosses in boreal peatlands

Climate change and the associated increased frequency of extreme weather events are likely to alter the emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) from boreal peatlands. Hydrologically sensitive Sphagnum mosses are keystone species in boreal peatland ecosystems that are known to emit various BVOCs. However, it is not known how their emissions respond to seasonal droughts. In this study, we quantified the effect of severe drought, and subsequent recovery, on the BVOC emissions from Sphagnum mosses using mesocosms originating from wet open and naturally drier treed boreal fens and bogs. Here we report the emissions of 30 detected BVOCs, of which isoprene was the most abundant with an average flux rate of 5.6 μg m−2 h−1 (range 0–31.9 μg m−2 h−1). The experimental 43-day ecohydrological drought reduced total BVOC and isoprene emissions. In addition, in mesocosms originating from bogs, sesquiterpene emissions decreased with the drought, while the emissions of green leaf volatiles were induced. Sesquiterpene emissions remained low even six weeks after rewetting, indicating a long and limited recovery from the drought. Our results further imply that long-term exposure to deep water tables does not decrease sensitivity of Sphagnum to an extreme drought; we did not detect differences in the emission rates or drought responses between Sphagna originating from wet open and naturally drier treed habitats. Yet, the differences between fen and bog originating Sphagna indicate local variability in the BVOC quality changes following drought, potentially altering the climate feedback of boreal peatland BVOC emissions.

Uncertainties of biogenic VOC emissions caused by land cover data and implications on ozone mitigation strategies for the Yangtze river Delta region

Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) play a crucial role in ground-level ozone formation, yet emission quantification faces considerable uncertainties stemming from input data. Land cover data, which determines the distribution of growth forms, is an essential driving input of BVOC emissions. This study explores the uncertainty in BVOC emission estimates arising from using two land cover datasets, specifically the MODIS and ESA land cover data, and the implications for ozone mitigation strategies in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region. By employing the MEGAN model for the year 2021, we estimated that ESA land cover data, with a finer 10 m resolution, yields a total BVOC emission estimate of 2299 Gg, which is over 52.9% higher than the MODIS dataset with a resolution of 500 m, attributed to the higher tree coverage (33.9% in ESA vs. 17.6% in MODIS) identified in the ESA dataset. We then simulated the ozone concentrations by both emission estimates with the WRF-CMAQ model. The elevated BVOC emissions based on the ESA data improved the underestimation of simulated isoprene concentrations and consequently resulted in more than 30% higher domain-averaged MDA8 ozone concentration compared to the MODIS-derived BVOC emission. Regarding ozone mitigation strategy, simulation with the ESA-based BVOC emissions results in 0.3–1.2 μg/m3 less ozone reductions compared to that with the MODIS-based emissions when reducing anthropogenic VOC emissions, but 0.7–2.9 μg/m3 higher ozone reductions when controlling anthropogenic NOx emissions. These disparities are more pronounced at the city level, highlighting the importance of accurate BVOC emission estimates for effective ozone control strategies.

Responses of plant volatile emissions to increasing nitrogen deposition: A pilot study on Eucalyptus urophylla.

Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) significantly impact atmospheric chemistry, with emissions potentially influenced by nitrogen (N) deposition. The response of BVOC emissions to increasing N deposition remains debated. In this study, we examined Eucalyptus urophylla (E. urophylla) using three N treatments: N0, N50, and N100 (0, 50, and 100 kg N hm-2 yr-1 N addition). These treatments were applied to mature E. urophylla trees in a plantation subjected to over 10 years of soil N addition in southern China, a region with severe N deposition. Seventeen BVOCs were measured, with isoprene (36.99 %), α-pinene (38.80 %), and d-limonene (14.27 %) being the predominant compounds under natural conditions. Total BVOC emissions under N50 were nearly double those under N0 and N100, with leaf net CO2 assimilation identified as the most critical photosynthetic parameter. Isoprene and α-pinene emissions significantly increased under N50 compared to N0, while d-limonene emission decreased under N100. Stronger correlations for individual BVOCs under N50 and N100 compared to N0 might be due to differences in BVOC biosynthetic pathways and storage structures. The localized canopy-scale emission factors (EFs) under N50 were significantly higher than the default values in the Model of Emissions of Gases and Aerosols from Nature (MEGAN), suggesting the model might underestimate BVOC emissions from Eucalyptus in southern China under increased N deposition. Additionally, the secondary pollutant formation potentials of BVOCs were evaluated, identifying isoprene and monoterpenes as primary precursors of ozone and secondary organic aerosols. This study provides insights into the impacts of increased N deposition on BVOC emissions and their contribution to secondary atmospheric pollution. Updating localized BVOC EFs for subtropical tree species in southern China is crucial to reduce uncertainties in BVOC estimations under current and future N deposition scenarios.

High-resolution emission inventory of biogenic volatile organic compounds for rapidly urbanizing areas: A case of Shenzhen megacity, China

The effects of volatile organic compounds on urban air quality and the ozone have been widely acknowledged, and the contributions of relevant biogenic sources are currently receiving rising attentions. However, inventories of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) are in fact limited for the environmental management of megacities. In this study, we provided an estimation of BVOC emissions and their spatial characteristics in a typical urbanized area, Shenzhen megacity, China, based on an in-depth vegetation investigation and using remote sensing data. The total BVOC emission in Shenzhen in 2019 was estimated to be 3.84 × 109 g C, of which isoprene contributed to about 24.4%, monoterpenes about 44.4%, sesquiterpenes about 1.9%, and other VOCs (OVOCs) about 29.3%. Metropolitan BVOC emissions exhibited a seasonal pattern with a peak in July and a decline in January. They were mainly derived from the less built-up areas (88.9% of BVOC emissions). Estimated BVOCs comprised around 5.2% of the total municipal VOC emissions in 2019. This percentage may increase as more green spaces emerge and anthropogenic emissions decrease in built-up areas. Furthermore, synergistic effects existed between BVOC emissions and relevant vegetation-based ecosystem services (e.g., air purification, carbon fixation). Greening during urban sprawl should be based on a trade-off between BVOC emissions and ecosystem benefits of urban green spaces. The results suggested that urban greening in Shenzhen, and like other cities as well, need to account for BVOC contributions to ozone. Meanwhile, greening cites should adopt proactive environmental management by using plant species with low BVOC emissions to maintain urban ecosystem services while avoid further degradation to ozone pollution.

Investigation of biogenic volatile organic compounds emissions in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs), which are produced and emitted by plants, have significant chemical reactivity in the atmosphere and impacting climate change. Qinghai Province, a vital component of the plateau, has abundant vegetation resources, primarily grasslands and forests, yet BVOCs emissions and their impact on air quality remain understudied. In this study, the emissions rates and compositions of BVOCs from seven dominant vegetation types in Qinghai Province were sampled and analyzed using a closed-loop stripping dynamic headspace sampling approach combined with GC–MS, and the total emissions of BVOCs in Qinghai province in 2021 were estimated by using G95 model. At the same time, the emission characteristics of various vegetation types were also analyzed. The results showed that the emissions rates and compositions of BVOCs differed significantly among vegetation types, with monoterpenes being the dominant emission composition in coniferous forests, which accounted for >70 % of the total BVOCs emissions, while isoprene being the main composition in alpine meadow, accounting for 84.96 %. The emissions of three typical vegetation types, Picea asperata, alpine meadow and alpine steppe, were monitored daily, revealing significant diurnal and clear unimodal patterns. The study also found that the annual average BVOCs emissions from vegetation sources in Qinghai Province were estimated to be 1550.63 Gg yr−1, with isoprene contributing the highest proportion of emissions, accounting for 56.94 %. Grassland was the largest BVOCs emission source in Qinghai Province, with an annual average emission of 1438.52 Gg yr−1. Additionally, BVOCs emissions in Qinghai Province showed strong seasonal and daily variation patterns, with the highest emissions occurring in summer, with the peak in July. These findings provide the characteristics of BVOCs emissions from vegetation sources in the Tibetan Plateau, which will contribute to a better understanding of their impact on atmospheric chemistry and climate change.

Spruce bark beetles (Ips typographus) cause up to 700 times higher bark BVOC emission rates compared to healthy Norway spruce (Picea abies)

Abstract. Biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions from trees subjected to biotic stress are higher compared to healthy trees, and they may also have a different compound composition. This in turn affects atmospheric chemistry and can lead to either positive or negative feedback to the climate. Climate change favors the abundance of the European spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus) which attacks the bark of Norway spruce (Picea abies) trees, causing induced BVOC emissions from the trees as a response to the insect stress. Here, results are reported from a study analyzing the difference in emission rates between healthy and bark-beetle-infested Norway spruce trees, changes in emission rates over time since the infestation started, and differences in emission rates from bark-beetle-drilled entry and exit holes. Bark chamber measurements on both healthy and infested trees were performed during the summer of 2019 at Hyltemossa and Norunda research stations in Sweden. The measurements showed that induced BVOC emissions following the bark beetle infestation were dominated by entry hole emissions in the early growing season and exit hole emissions in the later season. The results showed a significant difference in emission rates between healthy and infested trees during both seasons. The seasonal average standardized BVOC emission rate of healthy trees was 32 ± 52 µg m−2 h−1 (mean ± standard deviation), while the average standardized BVOC emission rates of infested trees were 6700 ± 6900 and 2000 ± 1300 µg m−2 h−1 during the early and late season respectively. BVOC emission rates were highest at the start of the infestation and decreased exponentially with time, showing induced emission rates for up to 1 year after which the emission rates were similar to those from healthy bark. Constitutive needle emission rates from healthy trees were found to be 11 times higher than bark emissions from healthy trees. However, when Norway spruce trees were infested, the bark emission rates were instead 6 to 20 times higher than the needle emissions, causing substantial increases in the total tree BVOC emission rate. This could lead to high impacts on atmospheric processes, specifically the formation of secondary organic aerosols, which have a higher yield from some monoterpene compounds, which increased from infested trees.

Effects of soil drought and nitrogen deposition on BVOC emissions and their O3 and SOA formation for Pinus thunbergii

Soil drought and nitrogen (N) deposition can influence the biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions and thereby their ozone (O3) and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. This study addressed their single and combined effects on BVOC emissions of Pinus thunbergii by laboratory simulation experiments. The results showed that light drought (LD, 50% soil volumetric water content (VWC)) stimulated isoprene, monoterpene, sesquiterpene, and total BVOC emissions, while moderate drought (MD, 30% and 40% VWC) and severe drought (SD, 10% and 20% VWC) inhibited their emissions (except for sesquiterpene in 20% VWC). N deposition decreased other VOC emissions and increased isoprene and sesquiterpene emissions. Total BVOCs and monoterpene were stimulated in low N deposition (LN, 2 g N/(m2·yr)) and inhibited in moderate (MN, 5 g N/(m2·yr)) and high N deposition (HN, 10 g N/(m2·yr)). Under combined treatment of soil drought and N deposition, total BVOC, monoterpene, and other VOC emissions were inhibited, sesquiterpene had no significant change, and isoprene emission was inhibited in MD combined treatment but promoted in SD. The O3 formation potential (OFP) and SOA formation potential (SOAP) from the changed BVOC emissions were calculated, OFP and SOAP of BVOC emissions and their compositions varied significantly among the treatments. Our study provided theoretical basis for assessing the impact of climate change and atmospheric pollution on BVOC emissions and their contribution to the formation of secondary atmospheric pollution.

Emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds from adjacent boreal fen and bog as impacted by vegetation composition

Peatland ecosystems emit biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC), which have a net cooling impact on the climate. However, the quality and quantity of BVOC emissions, and how they are regulated by vegetation and peatland type remain poorly understood. Here we measured BVOC emissions with dynamic enclosures from two major boreal peatland types, a minerotrophic fen and an ombrotrophic bog situated in Siikaneva, southern Finland and experimentally assessed the role of vegetation by removing vascular vegetation with or without the moss layer. Our measurements from four campaigns during growing seasons in 2017 and 2018 identified emissions of 59 compounds from nine different chemical groups. Isoprene accounted for 81 % of BVOC emissions. Measurements also revealed uptake of dichloromethane. Total BVOC emissions and the emissions of isoprene, monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenes, homoterpenes, and green leaf volatiles were tightly connected to vascular plants. Isoprene and sesquiterpene emissions were associated with sedges, whereas monoterpenoids and homoterpenes were associated with shrubs. Additionally, isoprene and alkane emissions were higher in the fen than in the bog and they significantly contributed to the higher BVOC emissions from intact vegetation in the fen. During an extreme drought event in 2018, emissions of organic halides were absent. Our results indicate that climate change with an increase in shrub cover and increased frequency of extreme weather events may have a negative impact on total BVOC emissions that otherwise are predicted to increase in warmer temperatures. However, these changes also accompanied a change in BVOC emission quality. As different compounds differ in their capacity to form secondary organic aerosols, the ultimate climate impact of peatland BVOC emissions may be altered.

Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds and Protein Expressions of Chamaecyparis formosensis and Chamaecyparis obtusa var. formosana Leaves under Different Light Intensities and Temperatures.

Both Chamaecyparis formosensis and C. obtusa var. formosana are representative cypresses of high economic value in Taiwan, the southernmost subtropical region where cypresses are found. Both species show differences of their habitats. To find out the effects of environmental factors on the CO2 assimilation rate and the biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emission of both species, saplings from both species were grown under different light intensity and temperature regimes. The results indicated that the net CO2 assimilation rates and total BVOC emission rates of both species increased with increasing light intensity. C. formosensis showed a higher magnitude of change, but C. obtusa var. formosana had considerably increased sesquiterpenoid and diterpenoid emission in BVOC under high light intensity. Both species grown under higher temperatures had significantly lower BVOC emission rates. Proteomic analyses revealed that compared to C. formosensis saplings, C. obtusa var. formosana saplings had less differentially expressed proteins in terms of protein species and fold changes in response to the growth conditions. These proteins participated mainly in photosynthesis, carbon metabolism, amino acid and protein processing, signal transduction, and stress mechanisms. These proteins might be the major regulatory factors affecting BVOC emission of these two species under different environments.

Cannabis Cultivation Facilities: A Review of Their Air Quality Impacts from the Occupational to Community Scale.

This review addresses knowledge gaps in cannabis cultivation facility (CCF) air emissions by synthesizing the peer-reviewed and gray literature. Focus areas include compounds emitted, air quality indoors and outdoors, odor assessment, and the potential health effects of emitted compounds. Studies suggest that β-myrcene is a tracer candidate for CCF biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs). Furthermore, β-myrcene, d-limonene, terpinolene, and α-pinene are often reported in air samples collected in and around CCF facilities. The BVOC emission strength per dry weight of plant is higher than most conventional agriculture crops. Nevertheless, reported total CCF BVOC emissions are lower compared with VOCs from other industries. Common descriptors of odors coming from CCFs include "skunky", "herbal", and "pungent". However, there are few peer-reviewed studies addressing the odor impacts of CCFs outdoors. Atmospheric modeling has been limited to back trajectory models of tracers and ozone impact assessment. Health effects of CCFs are mostly related to odor annoyance or occupational hazards. We identify 16 opportunities for future studies, including an emissions database by strain and stage of life (growing cycle) and odor-related setback guidelines. Exploration and implementation of key suggestions presented in this work may help regulators and the industry reduce the environmental footprint of CCF facilities.

High-resolution biogenic global emission inventory for the time period 2000–2019 for air quality modelling

Abstract. Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) emitted from the terrestrial vegetation into the Earth's atmosphere play an important role in atmospheric chemical processes. Gridded information of their temporal and spatial distribution is therefore needed for proper representation of the atmospheric composition by the air quality models. Here we present three newly developed high-resolution global emission inventories of the main BVOC species including isoprene, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, methanol, acetone and ethene. Monthly mean and monthly averaged daily profile emissions were calculated by the Model of Emission of Gases and Aerosols from Nature (MEGANv2.1) driven by meteorological reanalyses of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts for the period of 2000–2019. The dataset CAMS-GLOB-BIOv1.2 is based on ERA-Interim meteorology (0.5∘ × 0.5∘ horizontal spatial resolution); the datasets CAMS-GLOB-BIOv3.0 and v3.1 were calculated with ERA5 (both 0.25∘ × 0.25∘ horizontal spatial resolution). Furthermore, European isoprene emission potential data were updated using high-resolution land cover maps and detailed information of tree species composition and emission factors from the EMEP MSC-W model system. Updated isoprene emissions are included in the CAMS-GLOB-BIOv3.1 dataset. The effect of annually changing land cover on BVOC emissions is captured by the CAMS-GLOB-BIOv3.0 as it was calculated with land cover data provided by the Climate Change Initiative of the European Space Agency (ESA-CCI). The global total annual BVOC emissions averaged over the simulated period vary between the datasets from 424 to 591 Tg (C) yr−1, with isoprene emissions from 299.1 to 440.5 Tg (isoprene) yr−1. Differences between the datasets and variation in their emission estimates provide the emission uncertainty range and the main sources of uncertainty, i.e. meteorological inputs, emission potential data and land cover description. The CAMS-GLOB-BIO time series of isoprene and monoterpenes were compared to other available data. There is a general agreement in an interannual variability in the emission estimates, and the values fall within the uncertainty range. Development and Assessment of a High-Resolution Biogenic Emission Inventory from Urban Green Spaces in China.

Biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions have long been known to play vital roles in modulating the formation of ozone and secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). While early studies have evaluated their impact globally or regionally, the BVOC emissions emitted from urban green spaces (denoted as U-BVOC emissions) have been largely ignored primarily due to the failure of low-resolution land cover in resolving such processes, but also because their important contribution to urban BVOCs was previously unrecognized. In this study, by utilizing a recently released high-resolution land cover dataset, we develop the first set of emission inventories of U-BVOCs in China at spatial resolutions as high as 1 km. This new dataset resolved densely distributed U-BVOCs in urban core areas. The U-BVOC emissions in megacities could account for a large fraction of total BVOC emissions, and the good agreement of the interannual variations between the U-BVOC emissions and ozone concentrations over certain regions stresses their potentially crucial role in influencing ozone variations. The newly constructed U-BVOC emission inventory is expected to provide an improved dataset to enable the research community to re-examine the modulation of BVOCs on the formation of ozone, SOA, and atmospheric chemistry in urban environments.

Leaf-Scale Study of Biogenic Volatile Organic Compound Emissions from Willow (Salix spp.) Short Rotation Coppices Covering Two Growing Seasons

In Europe, willow (Salix spp.) trees have been used commercially since the 1980s at a large scale to produce renewable energy. While reducing fossil fuel needs, growing short rotation coppices (SRCs), such as poplar or willow, may have a high impact on local air quality as these species are known to produce high amounts of isoprene, which can lead to the production of tropospheric ozone (O3). Here, we present a long-term leaf-scale study of biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions from a Swedish managed willow site with the aim of providing information on the seasonal variability in BVOC emissions during two growing seasons, 2015–2016. Total BVOC emissions during these two seasons were dominated by isoprene (>96% by mass) and the monoterpene (MT) ocimene. The average standardized (STD, temperature of 30 °C and photosynthetically active radiation of 1000 µmol m−2 s−1) emission rate for isoprene was 45.2 (±42.9, standard deviation (SD)) μg gdw−1 h−1. Isoprene varied through the season, mainly depending on the prevailing temperature and light, where the measured emissions peaked in July 2015 and August 2016. The average STD emission for MTs was 0.301 (±0.201) μg gdw−1 h−1 and the MT emissions decreased from spring to autumn. The average STD emission for sesquiterpenes (SQTs) was 0.103 (±0.249) μg gdw−1 h−1, where caryophyllene was the most abundant SQT. The measured emissions of SQTs peaked in August both in 2015 and 2016. Non-terpenoid compounds were grouped as other VOCs (0.751 ± 0.159 μg gdw−1 h−1), containing alkanes, aldehydes, ketones, and other compounds. Emissions from all the BVOC groups decreased towards the end of the growing season. The more sun-adapted leaves in the upper part of the plantation canopy emitted higher rates of isoprene, MTs, and SQTs compared with more shade-adapted leaves in the lower canopy. On the other hand, emissions of other VOCs were lower from the upper part of the canopy compared with the lower part. Light response curves showed that ocimene and α-farnesene increased with light but only for the sun-adapted leaves, since the shade-adapted leaves did not emit ocimene and α-farnesene. An infestation with Melampsora spp. likely induced high emissions of, e.g., hexanal and nonanal in August 2015. The results from this study imply that upscaling BVOC emissions with model approaches should account for seasonality and also include the canopy position of leaves as a parameter to allow for better estimates for the regional and global budgets of ecosystem emissions.

Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds (BVOC) are largely accepted to contribute to both atmospheric chemistry and ecosystem functioning. While the forest canopy is recognized as a major source of BVOC, emissions from plant litter have scarcely been explored with just a couple of studies being focused on emission patterns over litter decomposition process. The aim of this study was to quantitatively and qualitatively characterize BVOC emissions (C1–C15) from Pinus halepensis litter, one of the major Mediterranean conifer species, over a 15‐month litter decomposition experiment. Senescent needles of P. halepensis were collected and placed in 42 litterbags where they underwent in situ decomposition. Litterbags were collected every 3 months and litter BVOC emissions were studied in vitro using both online (PTR‐ToF‐MS) and offline analyses (GC‐MS). Results showed a large diversity of BVOC (58 compounds detected), with a strong variation over time. Maximum total BVOC emissions were observed after 3 months of decomposition with 9.18 µg gDM −1 hr−1 mainly composed by terpene emissions (e.g., α‐pinene, terpinolene, β‐caryophyllene). At this stage, methanol, acetone, and acetic acid were the most important nonterpenic volatiles representing, respectively, up to 26%, 10%, and 26% of total emissions. This study gives an overview of the evolution of BVOC emissions from litter along with decomposition process and will thus contribute to better understand the dynamics and sources of BVOC emission in Mediterranean pine forests.

Isoprene and monoterpene emissions from alder, aspen and spruce short-rotation forest plantations in the United Kingdom

Abstract. An expansion of bioenergy has been proposed to help reduce fossil-fuel greenhouse gas emissions, and short-rotation forestry (SRF) can contribute to this expansion. However, SRF plantations could also be sources of biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions, which can impact atmospheric air quality. In this study, emissions of isoprene and 11 monoterpenes from the branches and forest floor of hybrid aspen, Italian alder and Sitka spruce stands in an SRF field trial in central Scotland were measured during two years (2018–2019) and used to derive emission potentials for different seasons. Sitka spruce was included as a comparison as it is the most extensive plantation species in the UK. Winter and spring emissions of isoprene and monoterpenes were small compared to those in summer. Sitka spruce had a standardised mean emission rate of 15 µgCg-1h-1 for isoprene in the dry and warm summer of 2018 – more than double the emissions in 2019. However, standardised mean isoprene emissions from hybrid aspen were similar across both years, approximately 23 µgCg-1h-1, and standardised mean isoprene emissions from Italian alder were very low. Mean standardised total monoterpene emissions for these species followed a similar pattern of higher standardised emissions in the warmer year: Sitka spruce emitting 4.5 and 2.3 µgCg-1h-1 for 2018 and 2019, aspen emitting 0.3 and 0.09 µgCg-1h-1, and Italian alder emitting 1.5 and 0.2 µgCg-1h-1, respectively. In contrast to these foliage emissions, the forest floor was only a small source of monoterpenes, typically 1 or 2 orders of magnitude lower than foliage emissions on a unit of ground area basis. Estimates of total annual emissions from each plantation type per hectare were derived using the MEGAN 2.1 model. The modelled total BVOC (isoprene and monoterpenes) emissions of SRF hybrid aspen plantations were approximately half those of Sitka spruce for plantations of the same age. Italian alder SRF emissions were 20 times smaller than from Sitka spruce. The expansion of bioenergy plantations to 0.7 Mha has been suggested for the UK to help achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The model estimates show that, with such an expansion, total UK BVOC emissions would increase between <1 % and 35 %, depending on the tree species planted. Whereas increases might be small on a national scale, regional increases might have a larger impact on local air quality.

Biogenic volatile organic compound emissions from leaves and fruits of apple and peach trees during fruit development

Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) are widely involved in a variety of atmospheric chemical processes due to their high reactivity and species diversity. To date, however, research on BVOCs in agroecosystems, particularly fruit trees, remains scarce despite their large cultivation area and economic interest. BVOC emissions from different organs (leaf or fruit) of apple and peach trees were investigated throughout the stages of fruit development (FS, fruit swelling; FC, fruit coloration; FM, fruit maturity; and FP, fruit postharvest) using a proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometer. Results indicated that methanol was the most abundant compound emitted by the leaf (apple tree leaf 492.5 ± 47.9 ng/(g·hr), peach tree leaf 938.8 ± 154.5 ng/(g·hr)), followed by acetic acid and green leaf volatiles. Beside the above three compounds, acetaldehyde had an important contribution to the emissions from the fruit. Overall, the total BVOCs (sum of eight compounds studied in this paper) emitted by both leaf and fruit gradually decreased along the fruit development, although the effect was significant only for the leaf. The leaf (2020.8 ± 258.8 ng/(g·hr)) was a stronger BVOC emitter than the fruit (146.0 ± 45.7 ng/(g·hr)) (P = 0.006), and there were no significant differences in total BVOC emission rates between apple and peach trees. These findings contribute to our understanding on BVOC emissions from different plant organs and provide important insights into the variation of BVOC emissions across different fruit developmental stages.

Estimations and uncertainty of biogenic volatile organic compound emission inventory in China for 2008–2018

Accurate biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emission estimations are essential for developing effective air pollution control measures. Chinese BVOC emissions were calculated at a spatial resolution of 36 km × 36 km for 2008–2018 using the Model of Emissions of Gases and Aerosols from Nature. A statistical method was developed to obtain more accurate emission rates based on large numbers of observations from China and other countries. The most detailed and accurate vegetation investigations at high resolutions were used to determine the distributions of leaf biomass and coverage for 82 vegetation species and types. The results show that the national BVOCs emissions in China in 2018 were large, 58.89 Tg, with isoprene, monoterpene, sesquiterpene, and other VOCs accounting for 63.60%, 11.35%, 2.18%, and 22.87% of the emissions, respectively. Broadleaf trees exhibited the largest isoprene and total BVOC emissions. The biogenic emissions and compositions displayed strong seasonal variations, and isoprene was significantly more sensitive to seasonality. The emissions were concentrated in the Greater Khingan Mountain, Changbai Mountain, Qinling Mountain, southeast and southwest forest areas, and Hainan Province because of their larger distributions of broadleaf trees with higher emission potentials. During 2008–2018, BVOC emissions increased by 20.18% at an annual rate of 2.03%, and isoprene exhibited the greatest enhancement of 32.67%, which was primarily due to the increase in leaf biomass. The regions with the largest growth were distributed in the Greater Khingan and Changbai Mountains, and the Sichuan, Hunan, and Hubei Provinces, which was primarily the result of the substantial increase in volumes of trees with higher emission rates. The uncertainty of our estimates was evaluated by comparing the applied basal emission factors, vegetation coverages, meteorological data, and emission algorithms from previous studies, and it was estimated to be approximately −36.5–4.6%.

Biogenic volatile organic compound emissions from Pinus massoniana and Schima superba seedlings: Their responses to foliar and soil application of nitrogen

Increasing nitrogen (N) deposition is one of the main drivers of global change, while the emission of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) from plant in response to elevated N deposition is poorly understood, especially with respect to the response to foliar application of N. In this study, BVOC emissions from two tree species (Pinus massoniana Lamb. and Schima superba Gardn. et Champ.) were determined by dynamic chamber coupled with a proton transfer reaction-time of flight-mass spectrometer. Two N application methods, namely soil application of N (SAN) and foliar application of N (FAN), and three N levels (5.6, 15.6 and 20.6 g N m−2 yr−1) were employed by applying NH4NO3 every week for 1.5 years. The results showed that: (1) oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs, mainly acetaldehyde, methyl alcohol, ethenone and acetone) and non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs, mainly monoterpenes, propyne, 1,3-butadiene and propylene) were the dominant BVOCs for all the treatments, accounting for 32.40–65.72% and 19.21–47.39% of total 100 determined BVOC compounds, respectively; (2) for S. superba seedlings, both SAN and FAN treatments significantly decreased total BVOC emissions (11.83% to 66.23%). However, total BVOCs from P. massoniana significantly increased with N addition for SAN treatment, while no difference were found in the FAN treatment; (3) BVOC emission rates for FAN treatment were significantly lower than those for SAN treatment, indicating that previous studies which simulated N deposition by adding N directly to soil might have imprecisely estimated their effects on plant BVOC emissions. Considering the inconsistent responses of BVOC emissions to different N application methods for different plant species, close attention should be paid on the effects of N deposition or even global change on plant BVOC emissions in the future.

Wildfire effects on BVOC emissions from boreal forest floor on permafrost soil in Siberia

One of the effects of climate change on boreal forest will be more frequent forest wildfires and permafrost thawing. These will increase the availability of soil organic matter (SOM) for microorganisms, change the ground vegetation composition and ultimately affect the emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs), which impact atmospheric chemistry and climate. BVOC emissions from boreal forest floor have been little characterized in southern boreal region, and even less so in permafrost soil, which underlies most of the northern boreal region. Here, we report the long-term effects of wildfire on forest floor BVOC emission rates along a wildfire chronosequence in a Larix gmelinii forest in central Siberia. We determined forest floor BVOC emissions from forests exposed to wildfire 1, 23 and > 100 years ago. We studied how forest wildfires and the subsequent succession of ground vegetation, as well as changes in the availability of SOM along with the deepened and recovered active layer, influence BVOC emission rates. The forest floor acted as source of a large number of BVOCs in all forest age classes. Monoterpenes were the most abundant BVOC group in all age classes. The total BVOC emission rates measured from the 23- and >100-year-old areas were ca. 2.6 times higher than the emissions from the 1-year-old area. Lower emissions were related to a decrease in plant coverage and microbial decomposition of SOM after wildfire. Our results showed that forest wildfires play an important indirect role in regulating the amount and composition of BVOC emissions from post-fire originated boreal forest floor. This could have a substantial effect on BVOC emissions if the frequency of forest wildfires increases in the future as a result of climate warming.

Contribution of volatile organic compound fluxes to the ecosystem carbon budget of a poplar short-rotation plantation.

Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) are major precursors of both ozone and secondary organic aerosols (SOA) in the troposphere and represent a non‐negligible portion of the carbon fixed by primary producers, but long‐term ecosystem‐scale measurements of their exchanges with the atmosphere are lacking. In this study, the fluxes of 46 ions corresponding to 36 BVOCs were continuously monitored along with the exchanges of mass (carbon dioxide and water vapor) and energy (sensible and latent heat) for an entire year in a poplar (Populus) short‐rotation crop (SRC), using the eddy covariance methodology. BVOC emissions mainly consisted of isoprene, acetic acid, and methanol. Total net BVOC emissions were 19.20 kg C ha−1 yr−1, which represented 0.63% of the net ecosystem exchange (NEE), resulting from −23.59 Mg C ha−1 yr−1 fixed as CO 2 and 20.55 Mg C ha−1 yr−1 respired as CO 2 from the ecosystem. Isoprene emissions represented 0.293% of NEE, being emitted at a ratio of 1 : 1709 mol isoprene per mol of CO 2 fixed. Based on annual ecosystem‐scale measurements, this study quantified for the first time that BVOC carbon emissions were lower than previously estimated in other studies (0.5–2% of NEE) on poplar trees. Furthermore, the seasonal and diurnal emission patterns of isoprene, methanol, and other BVOCs provided a better interpretation of the relationships with ecosystem CO 2 and water vapor fluxes, with air temperature, vapor pressure deficit, and photosynthetic photon flux density.
