Flowers of Edo: Eighteenth-Century Kabuki and Its Patrons

At Tokyo's National Theatre, kabuki plays conceived and premiered during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are performed today, yet the audience's experience is radically different from that of the period before 1868. Patrons of kabuki in Edo (Tokyo) in 1770 would not have felt comfortable at all in having their theatre so close to the seat of government (in view of the Diet and Imperial Palace and next to the Supreme Court) nor would they have enjoyed the quiet, almost solemn atmosphere or the ban on eating and drinking in their seats. In short, they would be bored to tears at the exalted National Theatre with its posh furnishings. They would feel a bit more comfortable at the Kabuki-za perhaps or would have at the old Shinbashi Enbuj6 Theatre recently demolished. If they wanted to get closer to eighteenth-century kabuki, they would have to leave Tokyo altogether and travel to the Naka-za in Osaka's Dotonbori district or the Minami-za in Kyoto during the face-showing (kaomise) performance in December. Still they would be bored by the stiffness of the audience and performance. They would not be part of the show. It would not be a festival.

Reminiscences of Dessau

1) It is possible to read Nakata's given name as Sadanosuke rather than Teinosuke or, even Jonosuke. Because of the nature of the written language, one cannot be sure of the pronunciation, unless it is written out phonetically. New ideas, centered around the architecture of the and the applied arts, started trickling into Japan around the 1920s. The first to introduce the to Japan was Nakata Teinosuke,1 who bears the distinction of being the only Japanese to ever have visited the Weimar Bauhaus. His articles, such as State and Bauhaus Postscripts, started to appear in print in 1924. Young architects who were dissatisfied with the existing order of things and whose appetites were whetted by these new ideas from Germany fought to purchase books such as vol. 14 of the Bauhausbucher series, Von Material zu Architektur, by MoholyNagy, (1929). Perhaps as a result of the difficulties of foreign travel and the fact that the was forced to close in 1932, not too long after its discovery in Japan, only three Japanese actually attended, despite the excitement generated by the doctrines. Architect Yamawaki Iwao and his wife, Michiko, were among the three. They entered as the 469th and 470th students, respectively, in the winter of 1930, two years before the dissolution of the Dessau Bauhaus. The only other Japanese, the 150th student to enroll, was an architect named Mizutani Takehito, who studied at the institute five years earlier. Yamawaki graduated from the Department of Architecture of Tokyo's National Art University in 1926. After working at an architectural firm in Tokyo for four years, he grew increasingly dissatisfied by the prevailing practice of divorcing the design of the building from the planning of its structure. Stimulated by the literature that he discovered, he contacted Walter Gropius in Berlin. He then took out a loan and he and his wife, Michiko, made their way to the in Dessau. He was to specialize in construction and development; she, in textiles. They arrived in the summer of 1930, just in time to witness the forced resignation of the director Hannes Meyer. Meyer had been appointed in 1927 to lead the newly established architecture department at the Dessau Bauhaus. He had taken over the reins of the school from Walter Gropius in 1928, when Gropius, founder and director of the Bauhaus, resigned under increasing attack by critics of the Bauhaus. Follow up study of sudden deafness.

It is significant to follow up patients with sudden deafness, because the change of hearing level after a long-term period and a differential diagnosis from Meniére's disease must be studied. We reported the follow-up study of 27 patients with sudden deafness who were admitted to the Department of Otolaryngology of the Second Tokyo National Hospital. The duration of follow-up ranged from 6-58 months, with a mean duration of 23.7 months. In the Complete Recovery Group there was little change of mean hearing loss during the follow-up period. We coud demonstrate that the once recovered hearing level rarely deteriorated afterwards, but the not recovered hearing level would sometimes deteriorate.

Kabuki from the Outside

One recently published book on Kabuki is called Kabuki: The Popular Theatre. But today Kabuki supports its claim to popularity mainly with body counts: each year Kabuki audiences are six times larger than those for all modern theatre (Shingeki) productions combined. Kabuki's devotees claim that Kabuki audiences enjoy and appreciate what they see, while Shingeki's adherents are firmly convinced that they do not. Whatever the case, we can be sure that large numbers of people do not go spontaneously to a Kabuki theatre for a good night's entertainment, that Kabuki is not supported by revenue from individual ticket sales, and that the scions of Kabuki themselves are worried that their audiences do not understand what goes on onstage.In 1969 Tokyo's National Theatre raised the price of tickets sold at the box office from 1,800 yen ($5.00) to 2,000 yen ($5.56) while at the same time giving considerable discounts, sometimes more than fifty percent, to package audiences.

Epedemiological Studies on Cardio-Vascular Diseases

Mass examination was carried out in a rural district (Hirai, Fujioka City) of Gunma Prefecture in order to compare manifestations of cardiovascular diseases between Japanese urban and rural adults. Examinees numbered 1, 285, aged above 40 (559 males and 726 females). In the report are given serum total cholesterol levels and fat deposits (skin-fold thickness) at 31 sites of the body, obtained from 472 subjects (185 males and 287 females) who were screened as having essential hypertension ; and these are compared with the results of similar survey performed by Dr. Suda with 398 essential hypertensive patients of similar ages (233 males and 165 females) in the 1st Tokyo National Hospital. Important findings are as follows : 1) Average serum total cholesterol level is higher in the urban (Tokyo) than in the rural (Hirai) regions without regard to age and sex. 2) Male fat deposits tend to be greater in Tokyo than in Hirai, whereas female ones (especially in abdominal region) can conversely be said greater in Hirai, despite lower serum total cholesterol level. 3) In both regions, serum total cholesterol level rises with age, or remains the same as in the previous decades, whereas fat deposits show marked fall from the respective preceding decades in the fifties in the male and in the seventies in the female. 4) In neither of the regions serum total cholesterol level and fat deposits can be said greater in those whose systolic blood pressure exceeds 200 mmHg.

The Eighth Day Festival on Miyakejima

MIYAKEJIMA is a small volcanic island some fifty miles out of Tokyo Bay in the Pacific Ocean. In this ten square miles of relative isolation a population of some 7,000 people live by means of fishing and the sale of butter, charcoal, and the essence of camellias which is used for perfume. The island population is concentrated in five villages which, until the twentieth century, were so mutually isolated that special dialects developed in each village. On 7 January I957, Yasuji Honda, Masao Urayama, and Hauro Misumi of the Folk Theatrical Society arrived at this island for the purpose of viewing one of its oldest festivals, the yoka matsuri. These men believed that, due to the purported antiquity of the festival1 and the isolation of the island, this event might shed some light on the ancient folk festivals of the main Japanese islands. The Folk Theatrical Society (Minzoku Geino no Kai) which sponsored the expedition was founded in 1952 to study Japanese folk events and encourage the revival of old, and the creation of new, folk theatricals. From I952 through I957 the Society published a journal, The Revival of the Theatre Arts (Geino Fukko) which was to be the successor of the long defunct Folk Arts magazine (Minzoku Geijitsu, I9281932). The Society's journal was in turn absorbed into the more general theatrical magazine, Geino. Besides studying and writing about folk theatricals, the members of this group hope to encourage them by providing opportunities for them to be seen, heard, and studied by other scholars and appreciated by a wider audience. The Society has close relations with the Waseda University Theatre Museum and with the Theatre Division of the Tokyo National Cultural Research Institute (Tokyo Kokuritsu Bunkazai Kenkyu Jo) in Ueno Park, Tokyo. In addition to these activities, the Society has collected many photographs, records, and field reports (in Japanese) from important Japanese folk events. They have also been instrumental in staging several excellent exhibitions of folk dance in Tokyo. At present the Society has some 200 members and is governed by a special ten man committee. The Miyakejima field group was kind enough to invite me to accompany them on their field trip. The report given here is based on the materials gathered by these men as well as my own observations. Since I was a foreign guest, the field recordings and interviews were not under my direction; thus certain details and conditions desirable from a Western viewpoint were not available. This is most evident in the recording situation described below and in the interrogation of the festival participants which covered only a few of the questions found on standard western documentation forms such as name, age, and place of origin. Questions of sources of the music and choreography and attitudes towards it were not covered. Nevertheless, enough material was collected and noted to produce a valid account of this old island festival.
