SO2 Photodissociation at 193 nm Directly Forms S(3P) + O2(3Σg-): Implications for the Archean Atmosphere on Earth.

It is well-documented that photodissociation of SO2 at λ = 193 nm produces O(3Pj) + SO X(3Σ-). We provide experimental evidence of a new product channel from one-photon absorption producing S(3Pj) + O2 X(3Σg-) in 2-4% yield. We probe the reactant and all products with time-resolved photoelectron photoion coincidence spectroscopy. High-level ab initio calculations suggest that the new product channel can only occur on the ground-state potential energy surface through internal conversion from the excited state, followed by isomerization to a transient SOO intermediate. Classical trajectories on the ground-state potential energy surface with random initial conditions qualitatively reproduce the experimental yields. This unexpected photodissociation pathway may help reconcile discrepancies in sulfur mass-independent fractionation mechanisms in Earth's geologic history, which shape our understanding of the Archean atmosphere and the Great Oxygenation Event in Earth's evolution.

Excited state non-adiabatic dynamics of the smallest polyene, trans 1,3-butadiene. I. Time-resolved photoelectron-photoion coincidence spectroscopy.

The ultrafast excited state dynamics of the smallest polyene, trans-1,3-butadiene, were studied by femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron-photoion coincidence (TRPEPICO) spectroscopy. The evolution of the excited state wavepacket, created by pumping the bright 1Bu (ππ*) electronic state at its origin of 216 nm, is projected via one- and two-photon ionization at 267 nm onto several ionization continua. The results are interpreted in terms of Koopmans' correlations and Franck-Condon factors for the excited and cationic states involved. The known predissociative character of the cation excited states is utilized to assign photoelectron bands to specific continua using TRPEPICO spectroscopy. This permits us to report the direct observation of the famously elusive S1(21Ag) dark electronic state during the internal conversion of trans 1,3-butadiene. Our phenomenological analysis permits the spectroscopic determination of several important time constants. We report the overall decay lifetimes of the 11Bu and 21Ag states and observe the re-appearance of the hot ground state molecule. We argue that the apparent dephasing time of the S2(11Bu) state, which leads to the extreme breadth of the absorption spectrum, is principally due to large amplitude torsional motion on the 1Bu surface in conjunction with strong non-adiabatic couplings via conical intersections, whereupon nuclear wavepacket revivals to the initial Franck-Condon region become effectively impossible. In Paper II [W. J. Glover et al., J. Chem. Phys. 148, 164303 (2018)], ab initio multiple spawning is used for on-the-fly computations of the excited state non-adiabatic wavepacket dynamics and their associated TRPEPICO observables, allowing for direct comparisons of experiment with theory.

The Role of Rydberg-Valence Coupling in the Ultrafast Relaxation Dynamics of Acetone.

The electronic structure of excited states of acetone is represented by a Rydberg manifold that is coupled to valence states which provide very fast and efficient relaxation pathways. We observe and characterize the transfer of population from photoexcited Rydberg states (6p, 6d, 7s) to a whole series of lower Rydberg states (3p to 4d) and a simultaneous decay of population from these states. We obtain these results with time-resolved photoelectron–photoion coincidence (PEPICO) detection in combination with the application of Bayesian statistics for data analysis. Despite the expectedly complex relaxation behavior, we find that a simple sequential decay model is able to describe the observed PEPICO transients satisfactorily. We obtain a slower decay (∼320 fs) from photoexcited states compared to a faster decay (∼100 fs) of states that are populated by internal conversion, demonstrating that different relaxation dynamics are active. Within the series of Rydberg states populated by internal conversion, the decay dynamics seem to be similar, and a trend of slower decay from lower states indicates an increasingly higher energy barrier along the decay pathway for lower states. The presented results agree all in all with previous relaxation studies within the Rydberg manifold. The state-resolved observation of transient population ranging from 3p to 4d can serve as reference for time-dependent simulations.

Uncovering Highly-Excited State Mixing in Acetone Using Ultrafast VUV Pulses and Coincidence Imaging Techniques.

Understanding the ultrafast dynamics of highly excited electronic states of small molecules is critical for a better understanding of atmospheric and astrophysical processes, as well as for designing coherent control strategies for manipulating chemical dynamics. In highly excited states, nonadiabatic coupling, electron-electron interactions, and the high density of states govern dynamics. However, these states are computationally and experimentally challenging to access. Fortunately, new sources of ultrafast vacuum ultraviolet pulses, in combination with electron-ion coincidence spectroscopies, provide new tools to unravel the complex electronic landscape. Here we report time-resolved photoelectron-photoion coincidence experiments using 8 eV pump photons to study the highly excited states of acetone. We uncover for the first time direct evidence that the resulting excited state consists of a mixture of both ny → 3p and π → π* character, which decays with a time constant of 330 fs. In the future, this approach can inform models of VUV photochemistry and aid in designing coherent control strategies for manipulating chemical reactions.

Disentangling Multichannel Photodissociation Dynamics in Acetone by Time-Resolved Photoelectron-Photoion Coincidence Spectroscopy.

For the investigation of photoinduced dynamics in molecules with time-resolved pump-probe photoionization spectroscopy, it is essential to obtain unequivocal information about the fragmentation behavior induced by the laser pulses. We present time-resolved photoelectron-photoion coincidence (PEPICO) experiments to investigate the excited-state dynamics of isolated acetone molecules triggered by two-photon (269 nm) excitation. In the complex situation of different relaxation pathways, we unambiguously identify three distinct pump-probe ionization channels. The high selectivity of PEPICO detection allows us to observe the fragmentation behavior and to follow the time evolution of each channel separately. For channels leading to fragment ions, we quantitatively obtain the fragment-to-parent branching ratio and are able to determine experimentally whether dissociation occurs in the neutral molecule or in the parent ion. These results highlight the importance of coincidence detection for the interpretation of time-resolved photochemical relaxation and dissociation studies if multiple pathways are present.

Excited state dynamics in SO2. I. Bound state relaxation studied by time-resolved photoelectron-photoion coincidence spectroscopy.

The excited state dynamics of isolated sulfur dioxide molecules have been investigated using the time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and time-resolved photoelectron-photoion coincidence techniques. Excited state wavepackets were prepared in the spectroscopically complex, electronically mixed (B̃)(1)B1/(Ã)(1)A2, Clements manifold following broadband excitation at a range of photon energies between 4.03 eV and 4.28 eV (308 nm and 290 nm, respectively). The resulting wavepacket dynamics were monitored using a multiphoton ionisation probe. The extensive literature associated with the Clements bands has been summarised and a detailed time domain description of the ultrafast relaxation pathways occurring from the optically bright (B̃)(1)B1 diabatic state is presented. Signatures of the oscillatory motion on the (B̃)(1)B1/(Ã)(1)A2 lower adiabatic surface responsible for the Clements band structure were observed. The recorded spectra also indicate that a component of the excited state wavepacket undergoes intersystem crossing from the Clements manifold to the underlying triplet states on a sub-picosecond time scale. Photoelectron signal growth time constants have been predominantly associated with intersystem crossing to the (c̃)(3)B2 state and were measured to vary between 750 and 150 fs over the implemented pump photon energy range. Additionally, pump beam intensity studies were performed. These experiments highlighted parallel relaxation processes that occurred at the one- and two-pump-photon levels of excitation on similar time scales, obscuring the Clements band dynamics when high pump beam intensities were implemented. Hence, the Clements band dynamics may be difficult to disentangle from higher order processes when ultrashort laser pulses and less-differential probe techniques are implemented.

Non-adiabatic and intersystem crossing dynamics in SO2. II. The role of triplet states in the bound state dynamics studied by surface-hopping simulations.

The importance of triplet states in the photorelaxation dynamics of SO2 is studied by mixed quantum-classical dynamics simulations. Using the SHARC method, standing for Surface Hopping including ARbitrary Couplings, intersystem crossing (ISC) processes caused by spin-orbit coupling are found occurring on an ultrafast time scale (few 100 fs) and thus competing with internal conversion. While in the singlet-only dynamics only oscillatory population transfer between the (1)B1 and (1)A2 states is observed, in the dynamics including singlet and triplet states we find additionally continuous ISC to the (3)B2 state and to a smaller extent to the (3)B1/(3)A2 coupled states. The populations obtained from the dynamics are discussed with respect to the overall nuclear motion and in the light of recent TRPEPICO studies [I. Wilkinson, A. E. Boguslavskiy, J. Mikosch, D. M. Femtosecond coincidence imaging of multichannel multiphoton dynamics.

The novel technique of femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron-photoion coincidence imaging is applied to unravel dissociative ionization processes in a polyatomic molecule. Femtosecond coincidence imaging of CF3I photodynamics illustrates how competing multiphoton dissociation pathways can be distinguished, which would be impossible using photoelectron or ion imaging alone. Ion-electron energy correlations and photoelectron angular distributions reveal competing processes for the channel producing (e(-)+CF+3+I). The molecular-frame photoelectron angular distributions of the two major pathways are strikingly different.

Analysis of Hydrogen Atom Transfer in Photoexcited Indole(NH3)n Clusters by Femtosecond Time-Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy

The photoinduced H-atom-transfer reaction in indole(NH 3 ) n clusters has been analyzed by femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron-photoion coincidence spectroscopy. The different contributions to the measured time-dependent ion and electron signals resulting from ionization by one and two probe photons can be discriminated and analyzed separately. In particular, the distinctively different dynamical behavior observed for clusters with small (n = 1-3) and larger (n ≥ 4) numbers of ammonia molecules is elucidated. For the small clusters an ultrafast process with a time constant of about 150 fs is identified and attributed to internal conversion from the initially excited ππ* state to the πσ* state. In contrast, for the larger clusters (n ≥ 4) such an initial ultrafast process is not observable probably for Franck-Condon reasons, while a structural rearrangement mechanism after the H transfer on a time scale of 10 ps is clearly recognized.

Femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron–photoion coincidence imaging studies of dissociation dynamics

We present the first results using a new technique that combines femtosecond pump–probe methods with energy- and angle-resolved photoelectron–photoion coincidence imaging. The dominant dissociative multiphoton ionization (DMI) pathway for NO2 at 375.3 nm is identified as three-photon excitation to a repulsive potential surface correlating to NO(C 2Π)+O(3P) followed by one-photon ionization to NO+(X 1Σ+). Dissociation along this surface is followed on a femtosecond timescale.
