Characterization of 2-phenanthroate:CoA ligase from the sulfate-reducing, phenanthrene-degrading enrichment culture TRIP.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) constitute a class of very toxic and persistent pollutants in the environment. However, the anaerobic degradation of three-ring PAHs such as phenanthrene is barely investigated. The initial degradation step starts with a carboxylation followed by a CoA‑thioesterification reaction performed by an aryl-CoA ligase. The formation of a CoA-thioester is an important step in the degradation pathway of aromatic compounds because the CoA-ester is needed for all downstream biochemical reactions in the pathway. Furthermore, we provide biochemical proof for the identification of the first genes for anaerobic phenanthrene degradation. Results presented here provide information about the biochemical and structural properties of the purified 2‑phenanthroate:CoA ligase and expand our knowledge of aryl-CoA ligases.

Phenanthrene-Degrading and Nickel-Resistant Neorhizobium Strain Isolated from Hydrocarbon-Contaminated Rhizosphere of Medicago sativa L.

Pollutant degradation and heavy-metal resistance may be important features of the rhizobia, making them promising agents for environment cleanup biotechnology. The degradation of phenanthrene, a three-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), by the rhizobial strain Rsf11 isolated from the oil-polluted rhizosphere of alfalfa and the influence of nickel ions on this process were studied. On the basis of whole-genome and polyphasic taxonomy, the bacterium Rsf11 represent a novel species of the genus Neorhizobium, so the name Neorhizobium phenanthreniclasticum sp. nov. was proposed. Analysis of phenanthrene degradation by the Rsf1 strain revealed 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid as the key intermediate and the activity of two enzymes apparently involved in PAH degradation. It was also shown that the nickel resistance of Rsf11 was connected with the extracellular adsorption of metal by EPS. The joint presence of phenanthrene and nickel in the medium reduced the degradation of PAH by the microorganism, apparently due to the inhibition of microbial growth but not due to the inhibition of the activity of the PAH degradation enzymes. Genes potentially involved in PAH catabolism and nickel resistance were discovered in the microorganism studied. N. phenanthreniclasticum strain Rsf11 can be considered as a promising candidate for use in the bioremediation of mixed PAH-heavy-metal contamination.

Anthracene-Induced Alterations in Liverwort Architecture In Vitro: Potential for Bioindication of Environmental Pollution.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread globally, primarily due to long-term anthropogenic pollution sources. Since PAHs tend to accumulate in soil sediments, liverwort plants, such as Lunularia cruciata, are susceptible to their adverse effects, making them good models for bioindicators. The aim of this study was to probe the impact of anthracene, a three-ring linear PAH, on the growth parameters of L. cruciata and the relationship established with the internalization of the pollutant throughout the phenology of the plant. Intrinsic plant responses, isolated from external factors, were assessed in vitro. L. cruciata absorbed anthracene from the culture medium, and its bioaccumulation was monitored throughout the entire process, from the gemma germination stage to the development of the adult plant, over a total period of 60 days. Consequently, plants exposed to concentrations higher than 50 μM anthracene, decreased the growth area of the thallus, the biomass and number of tips. Moreover, anthracene also impinged on plant symmetry. This concentration represented the maximum limit of bioaccumulation in the tissues. This study provides the first evidence that architectural variables in liverwort plants are suitable parameters for their use as bioindicators of PAHs.

Assessment of organic contaminants at a paint manufacturing site: Implications for health risks and source identification

The daily variation of organic contaminants, both gaseous and associated with suspended particulate matter (PM), was investigated within the estate of the National Company of Paintings in Lakhdaria, Algeria, spanning the period 2014-2015. The research emphasizes the chemical characterization of suspended PM, analyzing a range of organic compounds, including n-alkanes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and highly polar organics (HPOC), such as phthalate esters and heterocyclic compounds. Vapors of PAHs and polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs) were also analyzed. Low molecular weight compounds were primarily associated with the gas phase (two-ring PAHs, approximately 95%; three-ring PAHs, around 70%), while high molecular weight congeners were mainly associated with the particle phase (six-ring PAHs, 55%). The concentrations of PCBs (ranging from 0.6 to 42 ng m–3) were higher than those reported in other cities in Algeria and Europe. The source reconciliation of organic contaminants through principal component analysis (PCA) demonstrated that the primary sources were petroleum combustion, industrial manufacturing, tobacco smoking, and vehicular traffic. The significance of tobacco smoke was further confirmed by the analysis of PAH diagnostic ratios. Differences in the rates of diagnostic ratios between gaseous and particulate PAHs were attributed to distinct contributions from sources such as industrial processes. Health risks for workers exposed to PAHs and PCBs in PM < 10 μm (PM10) were quantitatively assessed in terms of benzo[a]pyrene equivalent concentration and incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR). The ILCR presents novel findings showcasing heightened risks among workers exposed to specific PAHs within production areas, whereas those related to PCBs suggested a high potential of health risks for laboratory workers.

Distribution, sources and ecological risks of PAHs and n-alkanes in water and sediments of typically polluted estuaries: Insights from the Xiaoqing River

Seasonal water and sediment samples were collected from the Xiaoqing River estuary and the neighboring sea to study the spatial and temporal distributions, sources and ecological risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and n-alkanes. The results showed significant spatial and temporal differences in the concentrations of PAHs and n-alkanes under the influence of precipitation, temperature, and human activities. The concentrations of PAHs in water were lower in the wet season than in the dry season, and those in sediments were higher in the wet season than in the dry season. The concentrations of n-alkanes were higher in the rainy season than in the dry season for both water and sediments. The spatial distributions of PAHs and n-alkanes were estuarine > offshore. The concentration ranges of ∑PAHs in water and sediments were 230.66–599.86 ng/L and 84.51–5548.62 ng/g, respectively, in the wet season and 192.46–8649.55 ng/L and 23.39–1208.92 ng/g, respectively, in the dry season. The proportion of three-ring PAHs in water (57.03% and 78.27% in the wet and dry seasons, respectively) was high, followed by two-ring PAHs (27.31% and 13.59% in the wet and dry seasons, respectively). The proportion of four-ring PAHs was higher in sediments (24.79% and 32.20% in the wet and dry seasons, respectively). The ecological risk of PAHs assessed using the toxicity equivalent quotient and risk quotient was at moderate to moderately high risk levels. The high concentration of n-alkane fraction C16 (611.65–75594.58 ng/L) in the water is indicative of petroleum or other fossil fuel inputs. The main peaks of n-alkanes in river sediments were C27, C29 and C31, indicating higher inputs of plant sources. The sediments in the estuary showed dominance of both short-chain C16 and long-chain C25–C31, indicating a combined input of higher plants and petroleum. The diagnostic ratios of PAHs and n-alkanes indicated that their sources were mainly oil/coal/biomass combustion and petroleum spills attributed to frequent vehicular, vessel and mariculture activities. Given the potential ecological risks of PAHs and n-alkanes in water and sediments, future studies should focus on their bioaccumulation and biotoxicity.

Impact of Atmospheric Conditions and Source Identification of Gaseous Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) during a Smoke Haze Period in Upper Southeast Asia.

Gaseous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were measured in northern Thailand. No previous studies have provided data on gaseous PAHs until now, so this study determined the gaseous PAHs during two sampling periods for comparison, and then they were used to assess the correlation with meteorological conditions, other pollutants, and their sources. The total concentrations of 8-PAHs (i.e., NAP, ACY, ACE, FLU, PHE, ANT, FLA, and PYR) were 125 ± 22 ng m-3 and 111 ± 21 ng m-3, with NAP being the most pronounced at 67 ± 18 ng m-3 and 56 ± 17 ng m-3, for morning and afternoon, respectively. High temperatures increase the concentrations of four-ring PAHs, whereas humidity and pressure increase the concentrations of two- and three-ring PAHs. Moreover, gaseous PAHs were estimated to contain more toxic derivatives such as nitro-PAH, which ranged from 0.02 ng m-3 (8-Nitrofluoranthene) to 10.46 ng m-3 (1-Nitronaphthalene). Therefore, they could be one of the causes of local people's health problems that have not been reported previously. Strong correlations of gaseous PAHs with ozone indicated that photochemical oxidation influenced four-ring PAHs. According to the Pearson correlation, diagnostic ratios, and principal component analysis, mixed sources including coal combustion, biomass burning, and vehicle emissions were the main sources of these pollutants.

The potential accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in macroalgae from the Egyptian coast of the Red Sea

In the marine environment, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) constitute one of the most pervasive and harmful types of organic pollutants. They pose an additional hazard to marine creatures' resilience due to ongoing climatic change. Therefore, determining their concentration and source is important for estimating their possible risks. Utilizing (GC–MS), we analyzed PAH levels in marine algal tissues along the Red Sea's Ras Gharib coastline. The present study covered the collection of seven Red Sea macroalgae namely; Sargassum cinereum, Caulerpa racemosa, Ulva intestinalisLinnaeus, 1753, Turbinaria ornata, Hormophysa cuneiformis, Ulva lactuca, and Cystoseira myrica) from the RasGharib coastline. Sixteen PAHs were found at quantities ranging from 159.67 to 261.57 ng/g in all of the examined marine algal tissues. The average concentration of the 16 PAHs was the highest in S. cinereum and the lowest in U. lactuca. The mean concentration of benzo(a)anthracene (BaA) in S. cinereum was 74.12 parts per billion (ng g−1). Two- and three-ringed PAHs with a lower molecular weight amounted to 2.51 to 23.54% of all PAH components in algal tissues. The average contribution of the eight cancer-causing PAHs to the total TEQcarc of the investigated species was sequentially as follows: BaP (50.23%), BaA (32.18%), BbF (6.52%), BkF (5.20%), IP (4.50%), and Chr (2.00%). The results of the diagnostic ratios demonstrated that the primary causes of most PAHs were combined pyrogenic and petrogenic activities. This suggests employing these indicators to investigate the biological impacts of PAHs pollution and establish its bioavailability in the marine environment.

Soot nucleation in diffusion flames and the role of aromatic hydrocarbons

We perform spatially resolved measurements of light scattering of soot in atmospheric pressure counterflow diffusion flames to complement previously reported data on soot pyrometry, temperature and gaseous species up to three-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). We compare two flames: a baseline ethylene flame and a toluene-seeded flame in which an aliquot of ethylene in the feed stream is replaced with 3500 ppm of pre-vaporized toluene. The goal is twofold: directly adding an aromatic fuel to bypass the formation of the first aromatic ring, widely regarded as the main bottleneck to soot formation from aliphatic fuels, and assessing the impact of a common component of surrogates of transportation fuels on soot formation. The composition of the fuel and oxidizer streams are adjusted to ensure invariance of the temperature-time history, thereby decoupling the chemical effects of the fuel substitution from other factors. The doping approach enables the comparison of very similar flames with respect to combustion products, radicals and critical precursors to aromatic formation (C2–C5 species), in addition to the temperature-time history. Doping with toluene boosts the aromatic content and soot volume fraction relative to the baseline ethylene flame, but, surprisingly, the soot number density and nucleation rate are affected modestly. As a result, the observed difference in volume fraction in the toluene-doped flame is reflective of larger initial particles at the onset of soot nucleation. The nucleation rate when soot first appears near the flame is of the same order as the dimerization rate of single-ring aromatics, in contrast with the expectation that the dimerization of larger PAHs initiates the process. Even though in and of itself nucleation contributes modestly to the overall soot loading, nucleation conditions the overall soot loading by affecting the size of the initial particle, which ultimately affects subsequent growth.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in air, foliage, and litter in a subtropical forest: Spatioseasonal variations, partitioning, and litter-PAH degradation

Forest canopies play a vital role in scavenging airborne semi-volatile organic compounds. The present study measured polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the understory air (at two heights), foliage, and litterfall in a subtropical rainforest (the Dinghushan mountain) in southern China. ∑17PAH concentrations in the air ranged from 2.75 to 44.0 ng/m3 (mean = 8.91 ng/m3), showing a spatial variation depending on the forest canopy coverage. Vertical distributions of the understory air concentrations also indicated PAH inputs from the above-canopy air. The concentrations of PAHs in fresh litter (with a mean of 261 ± 163 ng/g dry weight (dw)) were slightly lower than those in the foliage (362 ± 291 ng/g dw). Unlike the stable air PAH concentrations for most of the time of the year, the temporal variations of foliage and litter concentrations were remarkable but generally similar. Higher or comparable leaf/litter-air partition coefficients (KLA) in fresh litter compared with living KLA in leaves suggest that the forest litter layer is an efficient storage media for PAHs. Degradation of three-ring PAHs in litter under the field conditions follows first-order kinetics (R2 = 0.81), while the degradation is moderate for four-ring PAHs and insignificant for five- and six-ring PAHs. The yearly net cumulative deposition of PAHs through forest litterfall in the whole Dinghushan forest area over the sampling year was about 1.1 kg, 46% of the initial deposition (2.4 kg). This spatial variations study provides the results of in-field degradation of litter PAHs and makes a quantitative assessment of the litter deposition of PAHs, deducing their residence dynamics in the litter layer in a subtropical rainforest.

Spatiotemporal distribution, sources apportionment and ecological risks of PAHs: a study in the Wuhan section of the Yangtze River.

This study investigated the sources, contamination and ecological risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) based on their spatiotemporal distribution in aquatic environment in the Wuhan section of the Yangtze River (WYR). The fugacity ratio evaluation indicated that sediment was secondary release sources of two- and three-ring PAHs and sinks of four- and five-ring PAHs. The total concentrations of PAHs (Σ16PAHs) ranged from 2.51 to 102.5ng/L in water with the dominant contribution of 47.8% by two-ring PAHs. Σ16PAHs in sediments varied from 5.90 to 2926ng/g with the contribution of 35.4% by four-ring PAHs. The higher levels of PAHs occurred around developed industrial areas during the wet season, which was related to local industrial emissions and influenced by rainfall/runoff. Annual flux of Σ16PAHs was estimated of 28.77t. The PMF model analysis revealed that petroleum and industrial emissions were the dominant sources in water accounting for 58.5% of the total pollution, although traffic emission was the main source for sediment accounting for 44.6%. Risk assessments showed that PAHs in water were at low risks, whereas about 44% of the sediments were identified as medium risks. Therefore, energy structure adjustment and further implement of regulation and monitoring are necessary to reduce PAH emissions.

Spatiotemporal PAH levels in surface water of the Southeastern Black Sea; baseline study from the Giresun shores

Samples of surface water were collected seasonally along the 121 km long Giresun coastline to comparatively evaluate the source, distribution, and ecological risk of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The total PAHs levels, varied between 47.42 and 576.69 ng L−1 with the mean of 161.5 ng L−1, were consistent with seawater studies worldwide. Diagnosis rates evinced that PAHs in seawater along the Giresun coastline are primarily sourced from biomass, coal and petroleum combustion and petroleum at lesser extent. The three-ring PAHs (40.2 %) was proportionally high, followed by 2-ring PAHs (26.5 %). The toxicity equivalent quotient (TEQ) and risk quotients (RQ) were employed to assess ecological risk posed by PAHs in Giresun coastal seawater. As a result, the ecological risk in all seasons was at moderate to high risk level, except for autumn, which shows low to moderate risk according to TEQ. RQ values of ∑PAHs displayed low to moderate ecological risk.

Detailed Study of the Formation of Soot Precursors and Soot in Highly Controlled Ethylene(/Toluene) Counterflow Diffusion Flames

We perform spatially resolved measurements of temperature, gaseous species up to three-ring Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), and soot in atmospheric pressure counterflow diffusion flames. First, we characterize fully a baseline ethylene flame and then a toluene-seeded flame in which an aliquot of ethylene in the feed stream is replaced with 3500 ppm of prevaporized toluene. The goal is twofold: to investigate the impact of a common reference fuel component of surrogates of transportation fuels and bypass the main bottleneck to soot formation from aliphatic fuels, that is, the formation of the first aromatic ring. The composition of the fuel and oxidizer streams are adjusted to maintain a constant stoichiometric mixture fraction and global strain rate, thereby ensuring invariance of the temperature-time history in the comparison between the two flames and decoupling the chemical effects of the fuel substitution from other factors. Major combustion products and critical radicals are fixed by the baseline flame, and profiles of critical C2-C5 species precursors to aromatic formation are invariant in both flames. On the other hand, doping with toluene boosts the aromatic content and soot volume fraction, increasing the mole fraction of benzenoid structures and soot volume fraction by a factor of 2 or 3, relative to the baseline ethylene flame. This finding is consistent with the expectation that the formation of the first aromatic ring is no longer a bottleneck to soot formation in the doped flame. In addition, toluene bypasses completely benzene formation, opening a radical recombination pathway to soot precursors through the production of C14H14 (via dimerization of benzyl radical) and pyrene (through dimerization of indenyl radical).

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Fildes Peninsula, maritime Antarctica: Effects of human disturbance

This study provides the first data on the distribution, sources, and transport dynamics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Fildes Peninsula, Antarctica via summertime analyses of lakes, seawater, snow, and air in 2013. Relatively high PAH levels and similar composition profiles (dominance of two- and three-ring PAHs) in the investigated marine and terrestrial environmental matrices were found, indicating substantial primary emissions of petrogenic PAHs. This result was corroborated by nonequilibrium partitioning of atmospheric PAHs caused by release of anthropically-derived lighter PAHs and air mass movement trajectories mainly originated from the Antarctic marginal seas. Notable geographical disparities of PAH pollution in the various types of samples consistently suggested impacts of station-related activities, rather than long-range atmospheric transport, on PAHs in Fildes Peninsula. The lack for temperature dependence for gas-phase concentrations and various molecular diagnostic ratios of atmospheric PAHs demonstrated that the impact of local anthropogenic inputs on air PAH variability supersedes the re-emission effect. The derived air–water and air–snow exchanges of PAHs in this remote region indicated a disequilibrium state, partially associated with intense local emissions of PAHs. PAH outgassing from, and absorption into, lake and marine waters were both observed, probably due to differences in anthropogenic influences among sites, while the net deposition of gaseous PAHs into snow prevailed. The results of this study shed lights on the major importance of native anthropogenic sources in the footprint and fate of PAHs in the Fildes Peninsula, which merits further monitoring.

Effect of plant root exudate constituents on the degradation of phenanthrene by rhizobacterium Mycolicibacterium gilvum (Mycobacteriaceae, Actinobacteria)

The influence of the major components of plant root exudates, namely, carboxylic acids (succinic acid as an example) and secondary plant phenolic metabolites – flavonoids (rutin as an example), on the microbial degradation of the three-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) phenanthrene by rhizobacterium Mycolicibacterium gilvum was studied. The destructive activity of this microorganism relative to PAH was studied by cultivating it in a liquid mineral medium containing phenanthrene (0.2 g/L), succinic acid (5 g/L), and rutin (0, 0.05, 0.1 or 0.2 mmol/L) at 30°C under aeration on a shaker (130 rpm) for 14 days. The stimulating effect of succinic acid and rutin on the microbial degradation of phenanthrene was revealed. It was found that carboxylate was utilized as the main growth substrate for the microorganism, while flavonol and PAH had little effect on bacterial growth. Rutin had no antimicrobial effect on the microorganisms studied; on the contrary, in combination with succinic acid, it significantly increased the biomass growth. At high concentrations (0.1 and 0.2 mmol/L), rutin inhibited the degradation of phenanthrene by 22 and 56%, respectively. However, at a concentration of 0.05 mmol/L rutin increased phenanthrene degradation by 10%. Thus, the results obtained showed the dependence of the PAH microbial degradation efficiency on the presence, combination, and concentration of the plant root exudate constituents.

The concentrations and sources of PAHs and PCBs in soil from an oil field and estuary in the Yellow River Delta, China

The occurrence of organic pollutants [i.e. polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)] had been assessed in the soil samples collected from two sub-regions (an oil field and the Yellow River Estuary) in the Yellow River Delta (YRD), China. The concentrations of PAHs and PCBs in the soil were in the range of 157.8–481.7 μg kg−1 (dry weight) and 5.6–56.6 μg kg−1 (dry weight), respectively. The average concentration of PAHs in the soil samples from the oil field were 274.0 μg kg−1, and that in the estuary soil samples were 244.4 μg kg−1. The average concentration of PCBs in the soil samples from the oil field and the estuary were 24.2 μg kg−1 and 10.8 μg kg−1, respectively. The contribution of low molecular weight PAHs (two-ring and three-ring PAHs) was larger in the soil samples from the oil field than that in the estuary soil samples. Both PAHs and PCBs contaminations in the estuary area were lower than that in the oil field area. By using diagnostic ratios analysis, the main source of PAHs was attributed to petroleum input caused by the fuel oil or light refined petroleum products in the Gudong Oilfield. The amount of low-chlorine congeners (three to four chlorine atoms) PCBs in soil samples from the oil field were higher than that in the estuary soil samples. The congeners analysis of PCBs and the correlation analysis between the concentrations of PAHs and PCBs were employed. The results indicated that the emission of PCBs in YRD were influenced by both Gudong oilfield and other industrial sources.

Spatiotemporal PAH levels in the coastal sediment of Samsun, a Metropolis between Turkey's two largest deltas

Surface sediments were sampled seasonally along the Samsun coastline to assess the source, distribution, and ecological risk of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The total PAHs levels, varied between 71.64 and 1186.87 ng g−1 with the mean of 295.79 ng g−1, were consistent with sediment studies worldwide. Diagnosis rates revealed that PAHs in sediments along the Samsun coastline are primarily sourced from biomass, coal and petroleum combustion and petroleum at lesser extent. The three-ring PAHs (34.9 %) were proportionally high, followed by 4-ring PAHs (25 %). Sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), administered to evaluate biological effects of individual PAH, indicated adverse biological effects (≥TEL and < PEL) seasonally in some stations. With respect to the risk quotient, the risk arisen by PAHs in the coastal sediments of Samsun found to be moderate to high ecological risk.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urban and industrial soils of Kerman, the largest city in southeast of Iran: status, source apportionment, ecotoxicology, and health risk assessment

ABSTRACT In this study, pollution level, distribution, toxicity, molecular composition, probable sources as well as health risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban and industrial soils of Kerman metropolis were investigated. Kerman is a fast-growing city and a fine example of an arid city in a developing country. For this purpose, concentrations of 16 individual PAHs in 30 samples taken from the city soils and its industrial zones were determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The ∑PAHs concentration in urban soil samples varied from 26.1 to 902.8 μg/kg, with the mean and median of 302.6 and 148.4 µg/kg, respectively. In comparison, ∑PAHs in industrial soils ranged from 26.8to 251.9 μg/kg, with the mean and median values of 65.9 and 42.9 µg/kg, respectively. Four-ring PAHs comprise the dominant compounds in urban soils, whereas, two- and three-ring PAHs proved to be the most abundant compounds in industrial soils. Source apportionment was conducted using ring classification, diagnostic ratios, PCA, and multilinear regression (MLR). Also, human health risk assessment was undertaken through employing US EPA standard statistical models. This survey revealed that PAH pollution in urban soils originates mainly from fossil fuel combustion and in industrial soils from petrogenic sources. On the whole, in the Kerman environment, the shares of petroleum combustion, natural gas combustion, and petrogenic sources were 45.32%, 34%, and 20.68% respectively. Based on this study, the ecological risk of PAHs was low-to-moderate, and incremental lifetime cancer risk for children and adults were 1.35 × 10−4 and 1.04 × 10−4 respectively, indicating rather high risks.

Catalytic cracking of three-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the presence of hydrogen donors

Catalytic cracking of three-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the residue fluid catalytic cracking (RFCC) process was investigated. Catalytic cracking of mixtures of three-ring PAHs and various model hydrocarbons was carried out using RFCC equilibrium catalysts. Most of the three-ring PAHs were converted to coke in the absence of hydrogen donors, whereas coke formation was suppressed and decomposition of three-ring PAHs was promoted in the presence of aliphatic hydrocarbons, saturated rings, and aromatic ring side chains. Three-ring PAHs were first converted to noncondensed two-ring PAHs and subsequently decomposed to monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and condensed two-ring PAHs. This reaction can be depicted by partial hydrogenation of three-ring PAHs by hydrogen transfer reaction with coexisting hydrogen donors and sequential cracking of saturated rings. When a hydrogen donor was sufficiently present, cracking of saturated rings was the rate-determining step, and the reaction can be accelerated by increasing the reaction temperature or using a catalyst with a high acid content. These results are expected to lead to the effective utilization of heavy oil by promoting PAH cracking in the RFCC process.

Seasonal distribution and risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface sediments from the Giresun coast of southeastern Black Sea

Seasonal sediment samples were collected along the Giresun coastline of southeastern Black Sea and analyzed to detect the levels of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The PAH levels, ranging from 28.47 to 444.36 ng g−1 with the mean of 102.57 ng g−1 remained lower than those detected in most of the other sediment studies conducted worldwide. The percentage of three-ring PAHs (38.9%) was rather high, followed by that of 5-ring PAHs (21.8%). Detection rates revealed that PAHs in surface sediments along the Giresun coastline are mainly associated with coal combustion and local emissions. The evaluation with sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) showed that the level of PAHs was comparable to that at which the risk of adverse biological effects cannot be ruled out (≥TEL and <PEL) in some stations. The risk posed by PAHs in Giresun coastal sediments appears to be low to moderate ecological risk according to the risk quotient.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in the Atmosphere of the Southern Baikal Region (Russia): Sources and Relationship with Meteorological Conditions

This article presents the results of the long-term studies at two stations located in the city of Irkutsk and the Listvyanka settlement of the southern Baikal region (East Siberia) concerning the concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in atmospheric aerosol. The studies revealed the seasonal and interannual dynamics in the distribution of PAHs in aerosols from urban (source) and rural (receptor) areas. We carried out a comprehensive analysis of weather conditions such as wind direction, relative humidity, air temperature, and atmospheric pressure. The analysis determined high correlations between air temperature, atmospheric pressure, temperature inversions, and PAHs at the monitoring stations. The average annual concentrations of PAHs in the abnormally warm 2020 were three times lower than the average values obtained in the cold 2016. The toxic equivalent concentrations (BaPeq) increased from summer to winter with an increase in the contribution from benzo(a)pyrene, one of the most toxic and hazardous compounds of this class of organic substances. Four-, five- and six-ring PAHs mainly predominated in aerosol; the proportion of two- and three-ring PAHs increased from the warm season to the cold season. Diagnostic ratios of PAHs identified the main sources of air pollution by this class of compounds: combustion of coal, liquid fuel and firewood, vehicle emissions, and wildfires. The percentage of the transport of anthropogenic aerosol containing PAHs from industrial sources of the Southern Baikal region towards Lake Baikal was 65 to 71%.
