An approach to three-dimensional microwave imaging is proposed. Usually, because of the wide computational resource that is required by this kind of imaging that is based on the full-vector integral equations for the inverse scattering problem, linearizing approximations are employed. In this Letter, we exploit the use of the Rayleigh approximation in conjunction with a previously proposed numerical solution. We will show that the approach requires the same computational load as the one that makes use of the first-order Born approximation, but it provides an improvement in the reconstruction accuracy for a certain range of contrast values. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
