Three-Dimensional Elasticity Study of Vibration of a Composite Shell Panel with Embedded Piezoelectric Sensors

In this paper, Free vibration analysis of a finite length composite shell panel with an embedded piezoelectric sensor, using three-dimensional elasticity solution, is presented. To this end, two different methods are applied to solve the governing equations of the problem. In the first method, the displacement field is derived using trigonometric function expansion in circumferential and longitudinal directions. Using the method of changing variables, the governing partial differential equations are reduced to ordinary differential equations. Then these equations are solved simultaneously with outer and inner boundary conditions to give the natural frequencies and shape modes of the shell panel. In the second method the highly coupled partial differential equations are reduced to ordinary differential equations by means of trigonometric function expansion in circumferential and axial directions and then the finite difference method is applied to evaluate the obtained differential equations in radial direction. Then, the natural frequencies of the multi-layered panel are calculated using the obtained ordinary differential equations. At last, some numerical examples are presented to compare the results obtained by these two different methods. Three layered laminated shell panel is assumed to be [0/90/P].

Bending and vibration of functionally graded material sandwich plates using an accurate theory

In this paper, the bending and the free flexural vibration behaviour of sandwich functionally graded material (FGM) plates are investigated using QUAD-8 shear flexible element developed based on higher order structural theory. This theory accounts for the realistic variation of the displacements through the thickness. The governing equations obtained here are solved for static analysis considering two types of sandwich FGM plates, viz., homogeneous face sheets with FGM core and FGM face sheets with homogeneous hard core. The in-plane and rotary inertia terms are considered for vibration studies. The accuracy of the present formulation is tested considering the problems for which three-dimensional elasticity solutions are available. A detailed numerical study is carried out based on various higher-order models to examine the influence of the gradient index and the plate aspect ratio on the global/local response of different sandwich FGM plates.

Analysis of isotropic and multilayered plates and shells by using a generalized higher-order shear deformation theory

This paper introduces a generalized 5 degrees of freedom (DOF) higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT) to study the bending and free vibration of plates and shells, which may be used to create other HSDTs. It also introduces a new HSDT for shells that is more accurate than many available HSDTs despite having the same 5DOF, and which is also able to reproduce the well-known Soldatos’ HSDT as special case. The governing equations and boundary conditions of the generalized formulation are derived by employing the principle of virtual work. These equations are solved via Navier-type closed-form solutions. Static and dynamic results are presented for plates and cylindrical and spherical shells with simply supported boundary conditions. Panels are subjected to sinusoidal, distributed and point loads. Results are provided for thick to thin as well as shallow and deep shells. Results from the new and well-known HSDTs introduced and reproduced based on the present generalized 5DOF HSDT are compared with the exact three-dimensional elasticity solution. The present new HSDT for plates and shells is found to be more accurate than the well-known HSDTs developed by other authors, for analyzing the static and free vibration of isotropic and multilayered composite plates and shells.

Performance of functionally graded plates under localised transverse loading

This paper presents a study of the bending of an isotropic functionally graded plate under localised transverse load through a combination of analytical and computational means. The analytical modelling is based on the recently developed three-dimensional elasticity solution, expanded to cover different loading types, whilst the Finite Element model uses graded isoparametric elements. The plate under consideration is assumed to be simply supported, with Young’s and shear moduli varying exponentially through the thickness and the Poisson’s ratio constant. Comparative analysis of stress and displacement fields in functionally graded and homogeneous plates subjected to uniformly distributed and patch loadings is carried out.

The dynamic analysis of the functionally graded piezoelectric (FGP) shell panel based on three-dimensional elasticity theory

In this paper, three-dimensional elasticity solution is extended to investigate a FGPM finite length, simply supported shell panel under dynamic pressure excitation. The host panel is assumed to be of some functionally graded piezoelectric material (FGPM). The ordinary differential equations (o.d.e.) are derived from the highly coupled partial differential equations (p.d.e.) using series expansions of mechanical and electrical displacements. The resulting system of ordinary differential equations is solved by means of Galerkin finite element method. At last, numerical examples are presented for a FGPM shell panel. To verify the validity of code and formulation, the results of a FGM panel and a FGM plate are compared with the published results.

Benchmark solution for transverse vibration of annular Reddy plates

The exact closed-form solution for freely vibrating annular thick plates is presented on the basis of the Reddy's higher-order shear deformation plate theory. Several combinations of classical boundary conditions including, free, soft simply supported, hard simply supported and clamped, are applied at the inner and outer edges of annular plates. Hamiltonian and minimum potential energy principles are employed to derive the equations of dynamic equilibrium and natural boundary conditions of the plate. To validate the accuracy and effectiveness of the present formulation, direct comparisons are made between our results and those from the literature. In parametric studies, the first eight natural frequencies of annular plates with different combinations of boundary conditions are tabulated for various values of the inner–outer radius ratios and thickness–radius ratios. A set of three-dimensional vibration mode shapes along with their corresponding contour plots are presented to illustrate transverse displacements of annular thick plates. Since the results of the present exact solution are the closest to those of exact three-dimensional elasticity solution, they can serve as a reliable benchmark for checking the accuracy of future numerical and analytical solutions.

A refined shear deformation theory for free vibration of functionally graded plates on elastic foundation

A refined shear deformation theory for free vibration of functionally graded plates on elastic foundation is developed. The displacement field is chosen based on assumptions that the in-plane and transverse displacements consist of bending and shear components, and the shear components of in-plane displacements give rise to the parabolic variation of shear strain through the thickness in such a way that shear stresses vanish on the plate surfaces. Therefore, there is no need to use shear correction factor. Material properties of functionally graded plate are assumed to vary according to power law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. The elastic foundation is modeled as Pasternak foundation. Equations of motion are derived using Hamilton’s principle. Closed-form solution of rectangular plates is derived, and the obtained results are compared well with three-dimensional elasticity solutions and third-order shear deformation theory solutions. Finally, the influences of power law index, thickness ratio, foundation parameter, and boundary condition on the natural frequency of plates have been investigated.

Fundamental solution in classical elasticity via Lie group method

In this paper we show that the fundamental solution (Kelvin’s matrix) of three-dimensional classical elasticity can be obtained by using the Lie symmetry method.

Three-dimensional elasticity solution for sandwich beams/wide plates with orthotropic phases: The negative discriminant case

In an earlier paper, Pagano (1969) [Pagano NJ. Exact solutions for composite laminates in cylindrical bending. J Compos. Mater. 1969; 3: 398–411] presented the three-dimensional elasticity solution for orthotropic beams (applicable also to sandwich beams) for the cases of: (1) a phase with positive discriminant of the qudratic characteristic equation, which is formed from the orthotropic material constants and further restricted to positive real roots and (2) an isotropic phase, which results in a zero discriminant. The roots in this case are all real, unequal, and positive (positive discriminant) or all real and equal (isotropic case). This purpose of this article is to present the corresponding solution for the cases of (1) negative discrimnant, in which case the two roots are complex conjugates and (2) positive discriminant but real negative roots. The case of negative discriminant is frequently encountered in sandwich construction, where the orthotropic core is stiffer in the transverse than the in-plane directions. Example problems with realistic materials are solved and compared with the classical and the first-order shear sandwich beam theories.

Acoustic radiation from finite bilaminar submerged plates: Three-dimensional elasticity solution

The vibration and radiation of a submerged baffled finite rectangular bilaminar plate is obtained analytically using the three-dimensional equations of elasticity. The plate is composed of two perfectly bonded finite layers of identical size. The boundary conditions on the perimeter of the plate are free of shear stresses and pinned on the in-plane displacements. The plate is coupled to acoustic media on both sides and is baffled by an infinite rigid plane. The solution for the vibration response due to normal surface forces is found in terms of the bilaminar plate eigenmodes. The vibratory response and the associated near- and far-field radiated acoustic pressures are computed for various ratios of thickness to plate dimensions over a broad frequency range. Three-Dimensional Elasticity Solutions for Rectangular Orthotropic Plates

A state space approach for three-dimensional analysis of rectangular orthotropic elastic plates subjected to external loads on the top and bottom faces is developed. Through Hamiltonian variational formulation via Legendre’s transformation, the basic equations of elasticity are formulated into the state space framework in which the state equation exhibits Hamiltonian characteristics and the associated eigensystem possesses symplectic orthogonality. By means of separation of variables and eigenfunction expansion, three-dimensional elasticity solutions for orthotropic rectangular plates with two opposite edges simply supported and the other two arbitrary—which can be any combinations of simply-supported, clamped, and traction-free edges—are determined in a systematic way. The existing elasticity solution for the fully simply-supported plate is recovered. The through-thickness variations of the displacements and stresses are evaluated within the context.

Three-dimensional elasticity analysis of functionally graded rotating cylinders with variable thickness profile

A three-dimensional elasticity solution for the analysis of functionally graded rotating cylinders with variable thickness profile is proposed. The axisymmetric structure has been divided in several divisions in the radial direction. Constant mechanical properties and thickness profile are assumed within each division. The solution is considered for four different thickness profiles, namely constant, linear, concave, and convex. It is shown that the linear, concave, and convex thickness profiles have smaller stress values compared to a constant thickness profile. The effects of various grading indices as well as different boundary conditions, namely solid, free–free hollow and fixed–free hollow structures are discussed. A series of numerical results using zirconia as outer surface ceramic and aluminium as inner surface metal are presented. Parametric study has then been carried out to give a better understanding of how different stress, strain, and displacement components change along radial and axial directions of the rotating structures. Numerical results show that for a given grading index, the structures with a concave thickness profile have the smaller circumferential strain and stress compared to other thickness profiles.

A C0-type zig–zag theory and finite element for laminated composite and sandwich plates with general configurations

In order to conveniently develop C0 continuous element for the accurate analysis of laminated composite and sandwich plates with general configurations, this paper develops a C0-type zig–zag theory in which the interlaminar continuity of transverse shear stresses is a priori satisfied and the number of unknowns is independent of the number of layers. The present theory is applicable not only to the cross-ply but also to the angle-ply laminated composite and sandwich plates. On the premise of retaining the merit of previous zig–zag theories, the derivatives of transverse displacement have been taken out from the displacement fields. Therefore, based on the proposed zig–zag theory, it is very easy to construct the C0 continuous element. To assess the performance of the proposed model, the classical quadratic six-node triangular element with seven degrees of freedom at each node is presented for the static analysis of laminated composite and sandwich plates. The typical examples are taken into account to assess the performance of finite element based on the proposed zig–zag theory by comparing the present results with the three-dimensional elasticity solutions. Numerical results show that the present model can produce the more accurate deformations and stresses compared with the previous zig–zag theories.

Indentation law for lightweight sandwich plates

Sandwich structures consisting of high-modulus thin skins and a low-modulus thick core are sensitive to local loading, which causes local indentation. Classical approaches determine the deflection of sandwich structures by a superposition method where the local compression of the core for a panel on a rigid foundation is added to global sandwich bending without core compression. In this article, a sandwich plate is analyzed using a higher-order sandwich panel theory (HOSPT) where the faces are modelled by classical laminate theory and the core by a three-dimensional elasticity solution. The results are obtained from 14 partial differential equations for displacements of the faces and core. HOSPT determines core compression with a second-order distribution of displacement through the core thickness. The force versus core compression relations in the fully backed and clamped states are compared and it is shown that the core compression assumed in the classical approach differs from the core compression in a clamped state. Results are verified by ANSYS® FEM software and experimental data. A few sandwich panel specimens were made with glass reinforced plastic (GRP) skins and a polyurethane foam core. Results from indentation tests on the panels are compared with finite element, HOSPT, and other theories.

Three-dimensional elasticity solution for bending of transversely isotropic functionally graded plates

Abstract This paper presents a three-dimensional elasticity solution for a simply supported, transversely isotropic functionally graded plate subjected to transverse loading, with Young’s moduli and the shear modulus varying exponentially through the thickness and Poisson’s ratios being constant. The approach makes use of the recently developed displacement functions for inhomogeneous transversely isotropic media. Dependence of stress and displacement fields in the plate on the inhomogeneity ratio, geometry and degree of anisotropy is examined and discussed. The developed three-dimensional solution for transversely isotropic functionally graded plate is validated through comparison with the available three-dimensional solutions for isotropic functionally graded plates, as well as the classical and higher-order plate theories.

A layerwise mixed least-squares finite element model for static analysis of multilayered composite plates

A layerwise finite element model is developed in a mixed least-squares formulation for static analysis of multilayered composite plates. The model assumes a layerwise variable description of displacements, transverse stresses and in-plane strains, taken as independent variables. The mixed formulation allows to completely and a priori fulfil the known C z 0 requirements, which refer to the zig-zag form of displacements in the thickness direction and the interlaminar continuity of transverse stresses, due to compatibility and equilibrium reasons, respectively. This contrasts with layerwise displacement-based models that usually cannot a priori account for the interlaminar continuity of transverse stresses. In addition, the benefit of mixed least-squares formulation, as opposed to mixed weak form models, is that it leads to a variational unconstrained minimization problem, where the finite element approximating spaces can be chosen independently. Numerical examples are shown to assess the layerwise mixed least-squares model predictive capabilities compared to three-dimensional elasticity solutions and also other finite element results available in literature. Most notably, the present model is able to achieve accurate results in very good agreement with three-dimensional solutions and is shown to be insensitive to shear-locking.

Bending analysis of thin functionally graded plates using generalized differential quadrature method

In this paper, the differential quadrature (DQ) method is presented for easy and effective analysis of isotropic functionally graded (FG) and functionally graded coated (FGC) thin plates with constant Poisson’s ratio and varying Young’s modulus in the thickness direction. The bending of FG and FGC plates under transverse loading has been studied using the polynomial differential quadrature (PDQ) and the harmonic differential quadrature (HDQ) methods. A three-dimensional elasticity solution for a moderately thick FG plate with exponential Young’s modulus is used as the benchmark. Two examples, including a thin FG rectangular plate and a thin FGC rectangular plate with sigmoidal Young’s modulus, are investigated. The numerical results of PDQ and HDQ methods reveal good agreement with other solutions. Also, it is shown that the formulations for thin FG plates and homogeneous plates are similar, except that the plane strain components of the middle surface in FG plates are not zero.

Three-dimensional elastic solutions for functionally graded circular plates

Abstract Three-dimensional elastic solutions are obtained for a functionally graded thick circular plate subject to axisymmetric conditions. We consider a isotropic material where the Young modulus depends exponentially on the position along the thickness, while the Poisson ratio is constant. The solution method utilises a Plevako’s representation form which reduces the problem to the construction of a potential function satisfying a linear fourth-order partial differential equation. We write this potential function in terms of Bessel functions and we pointwise assign mixed boundary conditions. The analytic solution is obtained in a general form and explicitly presented by assuming transversal load on the upper face and zero displacements on the mantle; this is done by superposing the solutions of problems with suitably imposed radial displacement. We validate the solution by means of a finite element approach; in this way, we highlight the effects of the material inhomogeneity and the limits of the employed numerical method near the mantle, where the solution shows a large sensitivity to the boundary conditions.

유한요소 교호법으로 구한 삼차원 균열 탄성해의 정확성 향상 및 검토

SGBEM-FEM 교호법이 Nikishkov, Park 및 Atluri 에 의하여 제안되었었다. 제안된 방법을 사용하면 임의 형태의 평면 혹은 비평면 삼차원 균열에 대하여 복합 모드의 응력강도계수를 구할 수 있다. 그러나 현장에서의 적용을 위해서는 이 방법의 정확성 및 신뢰성에 대한 검토가 더욱 필요하다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 응력강도계수에 영향을 주는 주요한 몇 가지 인자를 검토하였다. 그리고 원통의 내부 및 외부에 존재하는 원주방향 표면균열에 대한 응력강도계수를 구하여 기존의 해와 비교하였다. 그 결과 SGBEM-FEM 교호법은 이들 균열에 대하여 정확한 해를 주고 있음을 확인하였다.

Static and Free Vibration Analyses of Doubly Curved Composite Sandwich Panels with Soft Core Based on a New Three-Layered Mixed Theory

In this paper, a closed-form solution of static problems and free vibrations of a doubly curved sandwich shell with flexible core based on a newly developed three-layered high-order sandwich panel theory (mixed theory) is presented for the first time. In this theory, displacements and transverse stresses at the interface of the core and face sheets are primary unknowns. Linear distribution of transverse normal and shear stresses through the core thickness is considered in the present model. This model accounts for non-linear distribution of displacements through the core thickness. Hamilton's principle is employed to obtain equations of motion. The formulation includes Donnell's shallow shell theory. In the case of static problems and free vibrations, the results of the present model are validated by a three-dimensional elasticity solution and analytical and numerical results published in the literatures. A parametric study is also included in this paper to investigate the effects of radius of curvature, thickness, and flexibility of the core. New results for thin and thick spherical and cylindrical sandwich shells are established, which can be considered as a basic reference for future investigations.
