Analysis of Female Breast Shape Based on 3D Human Body Scan in Shanghai

Through three-dimensional human body scanning, randomly selected from Shanghai 223 young women of 3D scanning measurement data, bra sizes standard to classify the samples according to the screened data represent strong 75 women in the chest. Using SPSS mathematical statistical analysis software, the 75 samples were analyzed by cluster analysis, the 75 samples were divided into three categories, and the chest characteristic parameters of each class were summarized. According to the degree of chest width, breast relative height, breast gather degree can be found breast shape of young women in the Shanghai area as a whole, which has a certain degree of ptosis, external expansion, but the degree is not serious can be modified by wearing the right bra of adjustment and to ensure to breast appearance.

Thermal protective performance evaluation of fire proof garment eliminating air gaps effect based on computational fluid dynamics simulation

To evaluate thermal protective performance of fire proof garment under flash fire exposures, it is important to discuss garment heat transfer characteristics eliminating the effect of air gaps between garment and body. In this study, a test of flame manikin clothed with close-fitting garment was designed. And a three-dimensional transient heat transfer computational fluid dynamics simulation of the test was achieved to gain the garment surface temperature. By means of three-dimensional body scanner, Geomagic and Gambit software, we developed a method of three-dimensional geometrical modeling of the full-scale close-fitting clothed manikin. The accuracy of the computational fluid dynamics simulation was validated by actual experiments. It was found that the average incident heat flux to the exterior of the Nomex® IIIA garment is not 84 kW/m2, the value measured in nude manikin tests, but the value is 11% lower than it. This will help to set more accurate boundary conditions on garment surface in further simulations.

The Role of the Hand During Freestyle Swimming.

The connections between swimming technique and the fluid dynamical interactions they generate are important for assisting performance improvement. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling provides a controlled and unobtrusive way for understanding the fundamentals of swimming. A coupled biomechanical-smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) fluid model is used to analyze the thrust and drag generation of a freestyle swimmer. The swimmer model was generated using a three-dimensional laser body scan of the athlete and digitization of multi-angle video footage. Two large distinct peaks in net streamwise thrust are found during the stroke, which coincide with the underwater arm strokes. The hand motions generate vortical structures that travel along the body toward the kicking legs and the hands are shown to produce thrust using both lift and drag. These findings advance understanding of the freestyle stroke and may be used to improve athlete technique.

Shape analysis of female torsos based on discrete cosine transform

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present results of shape analysis of female torso shape using the discrete cosine transform (DCT) from a three-dimensional (3D) whole body scan database. Design/methodology/approach – Torso shape is a central part of body shape and difficult to describe by linear measurements. In order to analyze body shape variation within a population the authors employed a DCT-based shape description method to compresses a dense 3D body scan surface into a small vector that preserves shape and removes size. The DCT-based shape descriptors of torso surfaces are further fed to principal component analysis (PCA) that decompose shape variation into constituent shape components. A visualization program was developed to observe principal components of torso shape and interpret their meanings. Findings – Extreme shapes of the first ten principal components summarize major shape variations and identify shapes that are difficult to capture with traditional anthropometric measurements. PCA results also help to find and retrieve similar shapes from a population-level database. Originality/value – Using the DCT for PCA of torso shape is a unique and original approach. It provides a basis for the description and classification of torso shape in 3D and the results from the shape analysis are potentially useful for designers of clothing and personal protective equipment.

A new approach to quantify the thermal shrinkage of fire protective clothing after flash fire exposure

Fire protective clothing made of inherent flame resistant materials shrinks easily when exposed to flash fire. This thermally induced shrinkage affects the thermal protective performance. Methods to evaluate the thermal shrinkage of fire protective garments are under development and there are currently no documentary standards available. The aim of this paper is to provide an effective method to accurately determine the shrinkage magnitude of fire protective clothing after flash fire exposure. This method involved a portable three-dimensional (3D) body scanner that could be mounted into the flame chamber to capture the 3D images of the nude and clothed manikin immediately before and after exposure. Based on the advanced post-processing techniques, the 3D images of the clothed manikin pre- and post-exposure were compared, and thermal shrinkage of the garment was characterized by three parameters, namely garment surface area change and volume and thickness change of the air layers entrapped between the manikin and garment. This method was supposed to provide basic knowledge for the quantitative research into the effect of thermal shrinkage on thermal protective performance.

Body composition measurement methods and their clinical application

Body composition measurement could significantly facilitate evaluating the content of various body components, getting information about the health status and assessing the diagnosis, treatment, test, and prognosis of several diseases. Human health will be seriously affected by the imbalance of body composition. Body composition measurement methods are generally divided into local measurement methods and general measurement methods. The former ones include skinfold thickness measurement, ultrasonic measurement, computed tomography and nuclear magnetic resonance measurement; while the latter ones include anthropometry, underwater weighing measurement, air displacement measurement, biological resistance measurement, near infrared absorption measurement, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry measurement, isotope dilution measurement, potassium isotope measurement and three-dimensional body scanning measurement, etc. This article reviews a variety of body composition measurement methods and their clinical application. The impact of air gap on thermal performance of protective clothing against hot water spray

The air gap size and distribution developed between clothing and a human body play a critical role in clothing performance, specifically for thermal protective clothing. Hot liquid is considered as one of the common hazards in industrial working environments. In this study, the clothing air layer entrapped between protective clothing and a manikin body was determined using three-dimensional body scanning, and the protective performance provide by the clothing was predicted using an instrumented hot water spray manikin evaluation system. The relationship between the average air gap size and overall protective performance was analyzed. The impact of clothing air gap developed along the human body on predicted burn injury was considered. In addition, the air gap distribution and its relation to skin burn injury were compared for the selected garments. In general, the results indicated that the average air gap size showed positive effects on the overall protective performance. For all body parts except the pelvis, the air gap size presented a significant relationship with the percentage of burn injury. For an individual garment, there was no significant correlation found between the air gap distribution and skin burn injury. The garment with a larger air gap size and minimal air gap changes during hot water spray provided better protective performance. The research findings could provide the technical basis for further development of high performance protective clothing.

The Research on Key Technology of Virtual Clothing Design System

With the development of computer technology and network technology, people want to design clothing which meets the aesthetic personal requirements through more convenient and more efficient computer technology. At the beginning of 21st century, customized electronic system came into being, it organically combined the human modeling in clothing production, body analysis, all aspects of the anthropometric fashion design, style selection, ordering clothing, apparel production by using the modern three-dimensional body scanning technology, computer technology and network technology to achieve effective and efficient digital garment production.

Performance study of protective clothing against hot water splashes: from bench scale test to instrumented manikin test.

Hot liquid hazards existing in work environments are shown to be a considerable risk for industrial workers. In this study, the predicted protection from fabric was assessed by a modified hot liquid splash tester. In these tests, conditions with and without an air spacer were applied. The protective performance of a garment exposed to hot water spray was investigated by a spray manikin evaluation system. Three-dimensional body scanning technique was used to characterize the air gap size between the protective clothing and the manikin skin. The relationship between bench scale test and manikin test was discussed and the regression model was established to predict the overall percentage of skin burn while wearing protective clothing. The results demonstrated strong correlations between bench scale test and manikin test. Based on these studies, the overall performance of protective clothing against hot water spray can be estimated on the basis of the results of the bench scale hot water splashes test and the information of air gap size entrapped in clothing. The findings provide effective guides for the design and material selection while developing high performance protective clothing.

New Breast Measurement Technique and Bra Sizing System Based on 3D Body Scan Data

Objective: The aim of this study was to develop a method for measuring breast size from three-dimensional (3D) body scan image data.<BR><BR> Background: Previous bra studies established reference points by directly contacting the subject"s naked skin to determine the boundary of the breast. But some subjects were uncomfortable with these types of measurements. This study examined noncontact methods of extracting breast reference points from 3D body scan data that were collected while subjects were wearing standardized soft bras.<BR><BR> Method: 3D body scan data of 32 Korean women were analyzed. The subjects were selected from the Size Korea 2010 study. The breast landmarks were identified by graphic analyses of slicing contour lines on 3D body scan data. <BR><BR> Results: Three methods determining bra cup size were compared. The M1 and M2 methods determined cup size by calculating the difference between bust girth and under-bust girth. The M3 method determined bra cup size by measuring breast arc length.<BR><BR> Conclusion: The researchers proposed an anthropometric bra cup sizing system with the breast arc length (M3 method). It was measured from the geometrically defined landmarks on the 3D body scan slicing contour lines. The new bra cup size was highly correlated with breast depth. <BR><BR> Application: The noncontact measuring method used in this study can be applied to the ergonomic studies measuring sensitive body parts.

A novel approach for fit analysis of thermal protective clothing using three-dimensional body scanning.

The garment fit played an important role in protective performance, comfort and mobility. The purpose of this study is to quantify the air gap to quantitatively characterize a three-dimensional (3-D) garment fit using a 3-D body scanning technique. A method for processing of scanned data was developed to investigate the air gap size and distribution between the clothing and human body. The mesh model formed from nude and clothed body was aligned, superimposed and sectioned using Rapidform software. The air gap size and distribution over the body surface were analyzed. The total air volume was also calculated. The effects of fabric properties and garment size on air gap distribution were explored. The results indicated that average air gap of the fit clothing was around 25-30mm and the overall air gap distribution was similar. The air gap was unevenly distributed over the body and it was strongly associated with the body parts, fabric properties and garment size. The research will help understand the overall clothing fit and its association with protection, thermal and movement comfort, and provide guidelines for clothing engineers to improve thermal performance and reduce physiological burden.

Unsteady flow phenomena in human undulatory swimming: a numerical approach

The undulatory underwater sequence is one of the most important phases in competitive swimming. An understanding of the recurrent vortex dynamics around the human body and their generation could therefore be used to improve swimming techniques. In order to produce a dynamic model, we applied human joint kinematics to three-dimensional (3D) body scans of a female swimmer. The flow around this dynamic model was then calculated using computational fluid dynamics with the aid of moving 3D meshes. Evaluation of the numerical results delivered by the various motion cycles identified characteristic vortex structures for each of the cycles, which exhibited increasing intensity and drag influence. At maximum thrust, drag forces appear to be 12 times higher than those of a passive gliding swimmer. As far as we know, this is the first disclosure of vortex rings merging into vortex tubes in the wake after vortex recapturing. All unsteady structures were visualized using a modified Q-criterion also incorporated into our methods. At the very least, our approach is likely to be suited to further studies examining swimmers engaging in undulatory swimming during training or competition.

Feature-Based Human Model for Digital Apparel Design

Three-dimensional (3D) body scanning technology opens opportunities for virtual try-on and automatic made-to-measure apparel design. This paper proposes a new feature-based parametric method for modeling human body shape from scanned point clouds of a 3D body scanner [TC] <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sup> . The human body model consists of two layers: the skeleton and the cross sections of each body part. First, a simple skeleton model from the body scanner [TC] <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sup> system has been improved by adding and adjusting the position of joints in order to better address some fit issues related to body shape changes such as spinal bending. Second, an automatic approach to extracting semantic features for cross sections has been developed based on the body hierarchy. For each cross section, it is described by a set of key points which can be fit with a closed cardinal spline. According to the point distribution in point clouds, an extraction method of key points on cross sections has been studied and developed. Third, this paper presents an interpolation approach to fitting the key points on a cross section to a cardinal spline, in which different tension parameters are tested and optimized to represent simple deformations of body shape. Finally, a connection approach of body parts is proposed by sharing a boundary curve. The proposed method has been tested with the developed virtual human model (VHM) system which is robust and easier to use. The model can also be imported in a CAD environment for other applications.

The relationship between air gap sizes and clothing heat transfer performance

The objective of the study is to establish a quantitative relationship between air gap sizes and clothing thermal performance. Using a three-dimensional human body scanner, the thicknesses and volumes of air gaps of 35 experimental shirts were measured. Relationships between the thermal insulations of clothing, measured on a thermal manikin, and air gap volumes were examined by regression analysis. Also, the regression model between clothing surface temperatures, measured by an infrared thermal camera, and air gap thicknesses was established. The results proved that the thermal insulation of experimental shirts increased with air gap sizes but began to decrease as a result of natural convection when the air gap thickness was higher than 1 cm or the air gap volume was greater than 6000 cm3. The 3D human body scanner can accurately measure air gaps under clothing, but it is expensive and is not available everywhere. A substitute method is to build a mathematical model for predicting air gap sizes. In this paper, regression models were established to estimate volumes and thicknesses of air gaps when the ease allowances of chest circumference and fabric properties were known. This study can be used to predict the thermal performance of clothing at the product’s design stage.

Using a Body Scanner in Assessing Perceptions of Attractiveness: Cross-Regional Study

Previous research reported that body size measured as Body Mass Index (BMI) and body shape measured as waist-hip-ratio (WHR) are two essential factors that form the perceptions of body attractiveness. However, the debate on the importance of BMI versus WHR is ongoing. In addition, scholarly articles, that focus on the role of geographic and cultural variability on perceptions of attractiveness, report inconsistent results. Some suggested that according to globalization and the rise of mass media, geographic variability of perceptions of attractiveness have been altered, while others believed that it remains. This study cross-regionally investigates the role of body size and body shape on the perceptions of female attractiveness. Samples were composed of 107 female college students in Alabama and 107 female college students in California. Participants viewed 27 three-dimensional body scan images of women in three body shapes (pear, hourglass, and rectangle) and three body sizes (underweight, normal weight, and overweight) and rated their perceptions of attractiveness. Images were shown to students in a random order with an overhead projector and Microsoft Office PowerPoint software. A three-way mixed-ANOVA was conducted to analyze the data. The results of the study showed that some regional differences exist between the two sample groups. However, regardless of the regional difference, hourglass shapes were perceived to be the most attractive shape and underweight sizes were perceived to be the most attractive size for both samples.

Performance of immersion suits: A literature review

In this review, a summary of documented research on immersion suits (i.e. constant wear, abandonment suit and diving suit) is presented. Particular emphasis was placed on research regarding the performance and analysis of these protective suits. Heat loss from the human body is critical for the protection of the wearer of the suit during cold water immersion, while thermal stress can be experienced by the pilots or helicopter rescuers when wearing immersion suits under normal or hot environmental conditions. In addition, the knowledge gaps have been identified in the aspects of environmental hazards, development of novel textile materials, garment design features and test methods. The key factors that are fundamental to thermal insulation of immersion suits have been summarized. Efforts for improving thermal insulation have been presented. Three-dimensional body scanning, as a new approach being used to understand and improve fit and sizing of garment, may contribute to a better understanding of thermal protection and thermal comfort of immersion suits. The simulation of real open sea scenario to test thermal performance of textiles poses a big challenge for researchers. This article reviews what is known about immersion suits, describes future development trends and identifies domains for improving performance of immersion suits and testing methods.

Does the “Rule of Nines” Apply to Morbidly Obese Burn Victims?

Assessing the percent BSA involved in a burn is essential in patient management. The "Rule of Nines" is one traditional method of estimating BSA. This rule assumes that adults have the same distribution of BSA percentages, regardless of body shape and weight. With increasing obesity, the percentages assigned to each body part may deviate from this formula. This project investigates the applicability of the "Rule of Nines" to the obese patient population. Two hundred obese adults underwent three-dimensional whole body scanning using a commercially available white light scanning device. Software was programmed to determine the surface area of the arms, torso, and legs. A measurement of TBSA and percentages associated with those body parts was derived. Additional software was used to quantify body shapes as android, gynecoid, or mixed. Height, weight, body mass index, and sex were tabulated and a statistical analysis was performed. The average surface area of the torso, arms, and legs differed among the obese and nonobese population. The surface area of the torso, arms, and legs in the obese patient was 52, 7, and 15% respectively compared with 36, 9, and 18% in the nonobese population (P = .98). Android shapes had an average torso surface area of 53% while gynecoid shapes had an average torso surface area of 48% (P = .97). A "rule of sevens" appears to be a more appropriate method for estimating BSA in the morbidly obese patient.

Correlation between clothing air gap space and fabric mechanical properties

To investigate the distribution of clothing air gap layers, clothes with the same pattern but different fabrics were put on a standard scan model. The [TC]2 NX-16 three-dimensional (3D) body scanning technique was used to collect point cloud data and the overall 3D visualization model of clothing air gaps was represented in a novel way through computer graphics processing. The volumes of air gap space were calculated. The main fabric mechanical properties were investigated and the relationship among them was analyzed by stepwise regression. The results demonstrated a close relationship between clothing air gap space and fabric mechanical properties. The volumes of air gap space were significantly positively correlated with stiffness-bending length and warp density and significantly negatively correlated with drape-crest angle uniformity. The conclusion could play a role in predicting and controlling the clothing design process, especially the material design process of clothing.

Is three-dimensional anthropometric analysis as good as traditional anthropometric analysis in predicting junior rowing performance?

With the use of three-dimensional whole body scanning technology, this study compared the ‘traditional' anthropometric model [one-dimensional (1D) measurements] to a ‘new' model [1D, two-dimensional (2D), and three-dimensional (3D) measurements] to determine: (1) which model predicted more of the variance in self-reported best 2000-m ergometry rowing performance; and (2) what were the best anthropometric predictors of ergometry performance, for junior rowers competing at the 2007 and 2008 Australian Rowing Championships. Each rower (257 females, 16.3 ± 1.4 years and 243 males, 16.6 ± 1.5 years) completed a performance and demographic questionnaire, had their mass, standing and sitting height physically measured and were landmarked and scanned using the Vitus Smart® 3D whole body scanner. Absolute and proportional anthropometric measurements were extracted from the scan files. Partial least squares regression analysis, with anthropometric measurements and age as predictor variables and self-reported best 2000-m ergometer time as the response variable, was used to first compare the two models and then to determine the best performance predictors. The variance explained by each model was similar for both male [76.1% (new) vs. 73.5% (traditional)] and female [72.3% (new) vs. 68.6% (traditional)] rowers. Overall, absolute rather than proportional measurements, and 2D and 3D rather than 1D measurements, were the best predictors of rowing ergometry performance, with whole body volume and surface area, standing height, mass and leg length the strongest individual predictors.

Anthropometric correlates of human anger

The recalibrational theory of human anger predicts positive correlations between aggressive formidability and anger levels in males, and between physical attractiveness and anger levels in females. We tested these predictions by using a three-dimensional body scanner to collect anthropometric data about male aggressive formidability (measures of upper body muscularity and leg–body ratio) and female bodily attractiveness (waist–hip ratio, body mass index, overall body shape femininity, and several other measures). Predictions were partially supported: in males, two of three anger measures correlated significantly positively with several muscularity measures; in females, self-perceived attractiveness correlated significantly positively with two anger measures. However, most of these significant results were observed only after excluding from the sample 27 participants who were older than undergraduate age, leaving a subsample of 40 males and 51 females. Evidence for relationships between anthropometric attractiveness indicators and anger measures was weak, but there was some evidence for relationships between anthropometric attractiveness indicators and self-perceived attractiveness measures. While our results support the recalibrational theory's prediction that anger usage and formidability are positively correlated in males and suggest that this formidability can be assessed via anthropometric measures alone, they also suggest that this prediction may not apply to populations older than undergraduate age. Further, our results suggest that while female anger levels relate positively to self-perceived attractiveness, they are unrelated to most anthropometric measures of bodily attractiveness.
