The Narmada River Project: Toward a feminist model of women in development

A number of competing models of women in development have been vying for the allegiance of feminist scholars concerned with gender equity in the Third World. This article compares the merits of the liberal integration model, the marginalization model, the capitalist exploitation model, and the socialist feminist model in assessing the probable consequences of a mega-development project for women. Using the Sardar Sarovar Project on the Narmada River in India as a case study, the essay contrasts the outcomes projected by each model in order to explore the play of gender in Third World societies and in development policies. In addition, applying these competing models to an on-going development project illuminates limitations in each model which must be overcome if the goal of a feminist model of women in development is to minimize the harm done to women by development and to empower women of the Third World.

The ‘discovery’ of third-world women and their situation followed in the wake of research by feminists in western societies. In the late 1960s, Ester Boserup documented that especially African rural women had experienced a major increase in their workload during this century; they had become the main producers not only of subsistence food but also of cash crops.

The meaning and effect of the UN decade for women on black women in America

Thirty Black women activists within different age categories, from varied educational and occupational backgrounds, and representing Black women's organizations from different regions of the U.S. were interviewed to determine their views on the meaning and effect of the UN Decade for Women on the lives of Black American women. Their responses to questions about the Decade indicate that the masses of Black women are poorly informed or totally uninformed about the UN Decade for Women. And, among that segment of the Black female population which is well informed about the Decade, positive views on the benefits of the Decade for Black women correlate strongly with employment in a national women's organization or governmental agency dealing with women's issues, and personal involvement in UN Conferences. Many Black women feel that the opportunity to network with third-world women is the major benefit that Black American women gained from the Decade. They also feel that American racism and class bias effectively prevent equitable implementation of a national plan of action to improve the status of women in the United States.

Sterilization abuse is a condition that affects poor and third-world women who have little or no political power. This paper focuses on the important issues of sterilization abuse through an accounting of the present problem of increasing caes of forced sterilization. The first laws contributing to the legalization of the state to sterilize were passed in 1907. Cases have been tried, committees have been formed and finally guidelines have been set to begin to solve the critical problem of sterilization abuse.
